David takes us deeper: physical life and death matter, but our spiritual life or death is even more decisive. St. John tells us, “Whoever does not love remains in death” (1 Jn 3:14). Spiritual death is the absence of charity; spiritual life is union with God, who is love (Jn 14:23). St. Faustina writes in Diary 1148 that “we resemble God most when we forgive our neighbors.” Without forgiveness, the heart withers. Without truth, charity collapses.Through the story of Anna Maria Schmidt, Fr. David shows the terrible cost of hatred and the supernatural power of forgiveness. Her journey—from rage to grace—reveals that only God can heal the heart so deeply that it can forgive even in the face of grave injustice. This is the same grace our nation desperately needs. There are those who ask why so many Americans speak Spanish. But according to the Latino media entrepreneur and historian Javier Marin, you might as well ask why so many Americans speak English. Over the last half century, the Hispanic community in America has risen from 3.5 to 62 million. In his new history of Latino media, Live From America, Marin charts how networks like Univision and Telemundo drove the meteoric rise of Hispanic America. This IS America, Marin insists - there are now 62 million Latinos shaping the country's politics, economy and culture. Rather than a demographic trend about some curious minority, it's the core reality of 21st century America.1. The US is now the world's second-largest Spanish-speaking country Only Mexico has more Spanish speakers than America. The US has surpassed Spain and Argentina. This isn't an immigrant enclave - it's a linguistic and cultural reality that's permanent and growing. As Marin puts it: “Even if you deport three million, we still have 57 million.”2. Univision and Telemundo are America's most powerful political engines - and they're not owned by Latinos These networks reach 60+ million people and absorb massive political advertising dollars from both parties. But Univision is controlled by private equity, Telemundo by NBC Universal. This creates a fundamental tension: are they serving their community or their shareholders? The term “Hispanic” isn't organic - it's a government-corporate construct designed to make 60+ million diverse people politically legible and commercially targetable.5. Law in a Culture of Theology: The Use of Canon Law by Parisian Theologians, ca. 1120-ca. 1220 (Routledge, 2025) considers the study of law within its intellectual environment. It demonstrates that theologians associated with the schools of Paris in the twelfth century, particularly Peter the Chanter and his circle, had a working knowledge of Romano-canonical tradition and thought about the human context of the law, which, in turn, reflected the environment in which each master worked. It begins by showing the extent to which law was woven into the fabric of the schools of Paris, and follows with individual case studies. These case studies--marriage in Hugh of St. Victor's De Sacramentis and Peter Lombard's Sententiae, excommunication in Peter the Chanter's Summa de sacramentis et animae consiliis, crusade activity and heresy in Robert of Couçon's Summa penitentiae, homicide in Robert of Flamborough's Liber poenitentialis, and the faces of greed in Thomas of Chobham's Summa confessorum--demonstrate how each theologian drew upon legal thought, for what end he was using it, and how his use of law fit into contemporary legal thinking. A competency in law proved valuable to, and was tailored for, different types of ecclesiastical roles: teachers showing students how to analytically navigate complex questions of pastoral care, papal judge-delegate on the cusp of full-time administration on behalf of the papacy, penitentiarius of St. Victor and the students at the University of Paris, or diocesan management. Do you remember your first love? The joy, the devotion, the way your heart came alive? That is how the church in Ephesus began, overflowing with grace, truth, and an incorruptible love for Jesus. But as life went on, that love began to fade. In his final words, Paul reminds them and us how to keep that love alive by breathing the life of the gospel through prayer, courage, and love. This message closes our Enlivened Together series with a call to return to our first love and to be a church enlivened with a gospel culture.

Dans IDÉES cette semaine, Pierre-Édouard Deldique reçoit Gilles Hieronimus, docteur en Philosophie, auteur d'un «Que sais-je ?» sur Gaston Bachelard. Ce petit livre est une synthèse précise de l'œuvre du philosophe, articulée autour de sa double vocation scientifique et poétique. Cet ouvrage précieux éclaire la cohérence d'une pensée souvent jugée inclassable qu'il résume avec clarté dans l'émission. Gilles Hieronimus souligne le côté Janus de ce penseur hors-norme. «Deux images se superposent : celle de l'austère professeur de philosophie des sciences, astreint à la rigueur et à la prudence ; celle de l'ami enjoué des poètes et des artistes, réceptifs à leur audace et volontiers fantasque.», écrit-il à propos de ce personnage à la longue barbe blanche. Bachelard (1884–1962), figure majeure de la philosophie française du XXè siècle, est présenté comme un penseur subversif, dont la démarche réconcilie rigueur scientifique et liberté imaginative. Pour lui, il y a «l'homme rationaliste» et «l'homme de la nuit» et du rêve. Bachelard révolutionne la philosophie des sciences en introduisant les notions d'obstacle épistémologique, de rupture et de discontinuité dans le progrès scientifique. Il défend une rationalité dynamique, toujours en reconstruction. À travers ses études sur l'imaginaire (l'eau, le feu, l'air, la maison…), il développe une poétique des images fondée sur l'intuition, la rêverie et la résonance affective. L'imagination devient un mode de connaissance à part entière. L'auteur insiste, dans l'émission et dans son livre, sur le rythme alterné que Bachelard propose entre rationalité et rêverie. Cette alternance n'est pas une contradiction, mais, au contraire, une méthode de vie et de pensée : un art de vivre philosophique, respectueux de la pluralité des formes de la vie bonne et de la liberté de l'esprit. Cette éthique du renouveau repose sur une sagesse qui refuse les dogmes et valorise le mouvement. Elle s'incarne dans une pédagogie de l'éveil, où le philosophe est aussi un éducateur. Le livre montre comment Bachelard, souvent marginalisé dans les grands courants philosophiques, a pourtant influencé des penseurs majeurs comme Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Ricœur, Deleuze, Foucault ou Simondon. Son style, mêlant rigueur conceptuelle et lyrisme, échappe aux classifications habituelles. Gilles Hieronimus le présente comme un philosophe combattant, marqué par son expérience de la guerre, un homme libre «logé partout mais enfermé nulle part». Au fil de ses propos, l'auteur qui dirige l'édition commentée des œuvres de Gaston Bachelard, confirme ce qu'il écrit dans son livre, le philosophe «cultive une spiritualité joyeuse, un gai savoir rationaliste, en s'appuyant sur la méditation privilégiée d'images heureuses, vitalisantes, verticalisantes». Un précieux compagnon de route en somme à «la recherche d'une sagesse et d'un art de vivre».
