#239. Sigurdur Jonsson is the captain of and brains behind ‘Aurora Arktika,’ the adventure charter business based out of Isafjordur in Iceland. Mia & I had the privilege of joining Siggi and his crew for their first ski & sail trip of the season in early March, exploring the West Fjords aboard his new boat ‘Arktika,’ hiking up the adjacent mountains and skiing down to the sea. Siggi’s business started with a chance meeting in Isafjordur with none other than Sir Robin Knox-Johnston & Chris Bonington, who had sailed in aboard Sir Robin’s Clipper 60 on their way to Greenland for a climbing expedition. Siggi & Robin hit it off, and he later bought the boat - now ‘Aurora’ - and started his adventures. On the Wind is presented by Rutgerson Marine. And also supported by Adlard Coles, and BRNKL Systems.

#234. Maik Brotzmann has been a friend of the podcast now for a few years, having joined Mia & I in Annapolis two years back to attend one of our Celestial workshops. He grew up in East Germany and lived through the fall of the Berlin wall, before later moving to Iceland to pursue his career on the waterfront. Maik is educated as a metrologist, but his interests are wide-ranging, from weather forecasting and routing to yacht design and naval architecture to sustainable marine tourism. We caught up with Maik on his own turf in Isafjordur where we stayed at his humble quarters, as he calls them, before joining Aurora Arktika for the ski & sail adventure we did in March. Find Maik online at haf-strand.com. On the Wind is presented by Rutgerson Marin. And also supported by Adlard Coles, and Weems & Plath.

#109 is guest-hosted by Magnus Ormestad, of the hugely popular Swedish outdoor sports podcast ‘Husky.’ I met Magnus in Stockholm in May. He had a chance to go to Iceland and stay aboard the Aurora Arktika, a 60-foot former Clipper RTW race boat. His interview with skipper ‘Siggi’ Jonsson had me spellbound – they spent a week sailing in the fjords of Iceland and skiing the surrounding mountain peaks. Magnus agreed to let me air his chat with Siggi on my show, so here it is! I remember very well the first time I saw the Aurora Arktika and her captain Sigurdur “Siggi” Jonsson; it was in the fantastic short movie Iceland – A Skier’s Journey by Jordan Manley. Somewhere along the way I came in contact with Siggi and I was offered a place on the boat for a week of skitouring in the Westfjords. This is episode thirteen of the Husky International series – get introduced to the wonderful town of Ísafjörður, the local backcountry community, the visitors and get to know the captain of the Aurora Arktika.
