London’s beer scene is made up of a complex tapestry of interesting folks. Like with any beer community, its people are what really makes it, and here in London, one of those people is journalist Will Hawkes. Hawkes has written about beer since 2010 for mainstream publications such as The Independent, The Washington Post, and The Financial Times as well as specialist beer mags like BeerAdvocate and All About Beer. He’s authored two books including the city beer guide Craft Beer London along with its accompanying app. And in 2013, he won the prestigious British Guild of Beer Writers Beer Writer of the Year Award. Will is also the brains behind London’s original craft beer week, London Beer City, which is now entering its fourth year this August. Full disclosure: I’m now involved with helping Will organize this year's event, and as is often the case it was this involvement that made me realize that we should sit down and record a conversation together. As you might expect, our chat is typically London-centric as we dig into topics such as cask ale, the recent opening of Camden Town Brewery’s $40 million facility and the recent acquisition of London Fields Brewery by Carlsberg and Brooklyn Brewery.
When Orbit Brewer founder Robert contacted us about hosting a special London Beer City event entitled “A History of London Beer” with renowned beer writer Adrian Tierney-Jones, we obviously jumped at the chance! The event featured a whistle-stop tour of London beer history, intertwined with tastings of Orbit’s beers and the not-so-occasional tangentially related story! This is part 2 of the podcast, so if you haven’t listened to the first half, make sure to check it out.
We’ve split the event over two episodes because it lasted a bit longer than our usual events so be sure to keep an eye out for part two, which will be posted up soon! Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; big thanks to Adrian for coming up from Devon, and the Orbit guys for coming from the various places they live around London.
We're huge fans of Wild Beer Co. and so when we had the chance to get them down to our Balham store for a beer and cheese pairing, we obviously jumped at it! This event also happened to coincide with London Beer City week and the 2nd anniversary of opening our doors for the first time, so it was definitely a night to celebrate. We were joined by Andy and James who bought along 5 of their beers, including some very special sour beers and some incredible local cheese. As one of the most innovative breweries in the UK, this event was a great chance to learn more about what they do, which is why we've decided to include it as the main feature of this podcast. Along with our Wild Beer Co. Meet the Brewer, we also chat with Chippy, the manager of our Balham store. There'll be talk of new and upcoming beers, events and also a very special announcement! As a warning, this episode is filled with a fair amount of profanity, so if you're listening with kids, maybe chuck on some headphones, or save the episode for an hour alone at the pub!
