At We Brought Beer we're lucky enough to meet a huge range of people from the beer world, whether it's brewers, sales people, writers or just straight up beer lovers. All of these people have fascinating and varied insights into the beer scene, each with their own unique stories shaped by their expe…
When we found out that Beerbliotek had bought a canning line, we got very excited because we loved what those guys were brewing. When we heard that their beers were going to start being exported to the UK, we got even more excited! When we found out that they wanted to do a Meet the Brewer event with us, we had to sit down for 10 minutes after we saw the beer list that they were bringing along with them. This Swedish brewery have probably more fun with their beers, and the names, than any other brewery around. We were joined by founder Adam, who took us through five of their different beers. From fruity sours to full on barrel-aged Imperial Stouts, this was a Meet the Brewer that delivered everything you could ever want from a modern craft brewery. This is our final podcast of the series (don't look too sad!), but we'll be back in the spring with plenty more great content!
Since the day we opened, Brew By Numbers have been ever present in our fridges, and always pretty popular thanks to their great brews and sleek labels. However, several months ago they absolutely bowled over the UK brewing scene with their hazy, unfiltered, juicy pale ales and IPAs which were amongst the first in the "Yeast Coast" style. Suddenly they were catapulted to the forefront of everyone's mind with the incredible beers they were brewing. For our event, we were joined by founder Dave and events/marketing/beer man Chris. They took us through plenty of their beers, including these latest Pale Ales and IPAs. However, what's also brilliant is their nod to the brewing traditions of Belgium, with their Saisons still being one of the best modern interpretations of the style brewed in the UK currently. Finishing the night on their dangerously drinkable Tripel, hopped with Ella also showed that it just doesn't have to be a facemeltingly bitter and fruity pale beer to excite the palate. We also upload all our episodes to our SoundCloud account and Acast if iTunes isn't your thing! Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; massive thank you to Dave and Chris for coming down, and to all their brewers who perfectly blend modern and traditional brewing.
We were joined by Evin, the head brewer and founder of The Kernel brewery up in Bermondsey. Founded back before anyone else had thought to place breweries in railway arches and when they were only the fourth or fifth brewery in London at the time, they've really been at the forefront of the craft beer movement and have shown the way for everyone else who followed. For the evening, we tried five different beers and Evin talked about the unique philosophy which sits at the heart of everything The Kernel do. Many other breweries have tried to replicate this, but none have come close! Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; big thanks to Evin for coming down to our shop for the evening!
When Wimbledon Brewery opened last year we were incredibly excited at the prospect of having another incredible brewery so close to us. With head-brewer Derek Prentice leading the way, their initial offerings were cask only and we managed to nab one of the first batches for our Cask Beer Festival. They've since expanded their small package range and are now a permanent fixture across all three of our stores. For our Meet the Brewer event, we were joined by Derek and several of the team for six different beers, with some very cool keg vs bottle vs cask experiments going on. Wimbledon are forging their own path with more traditionally leaning beers and are brewing some of the best examples of their styles in London at the moment. Listen to one of the most respected person in the beer industry talk about their brewery and the wider beer scene. Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; big thanks to Derek and all the crew for coming down from to the shop, and also to whoever made their beer bread and cheese!
When Orbit Brewer founder Robert contacted us about hosting a special London Beer City event entitled “A History of London Beer” with renowned beer writer Adrian Tierney-Jones, we obviously jumped at the chance! The event featured a whistle-stop tour of London beer history, intertwined with tastings of Orbit’s beers and the not-so-occasional tangentially related story! This is part 2 of the podcast, so if you haven’t listened to the first half, make sure to check it out.
Episode 05 of We Broadcast Beer sees us chat with our marketing man, Ben, about some of the stuff going on up in the Manchester beer scene, as well as his experience of IndyManBeerCon. Our main feature this week is from our Meet the Brewer event with the Alphabet Brewing Co guys from up in Manchester and their assistant head brewer, Dan. Please note, there is a bit of swearing, so banish the kids from the room if you're listening to the podcast on speakers, or wait until they're asleep in the car! The beers we enjoyed are as follows: • Charlie Don't Surf - American Wheat (keg) • Nouvelle Saison - Saison (keg) • A to the K - Oatmeal Pale Ale (can) • Flat White - White Coffee Stout (can) • BA Crate Digger - Barrel-aged stout (keg) Hosted by James Hickson; produced by Al Riley; big thanks to the Alphabet Brewing Co. guys for coming down to London!
We’ve split the event over two episodes because it lasted a bit longer than our usual events so be sure to keep an eye out for part two, which will be posted up soon! Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; big thanks to Adrian for coming up from Devon, and the Orbit guys for coming from the various places they live around London.
We're huge fans of Wild Beer Co. and so when we had the chance to get them down to our Balham store for a beer and cheese pairing, we obviously jumped at it! This event also happened to coincide with London Beer City week and the 2nd anniversary of opening our doors for the first time, so it was definitely a night to celebrate. We were joined by Andy and James who bought along 5 of their beers, including some very special sour beers and some incredible local cheese. As one of the most innovative breweries in the UK, this event was a great chance to learn more about what they do, which is why we've decided to include it as the main feature of this podcast. Along with our Wild Beer Co. Meet the Brewer, we also chat with Chippy, the manager of our Balham store. There'll be talk of new and upcoming beers, events and also a very special announcement! As a warning, this episode is filled with a fair amount of profanity, so if you're listening with kids, maybe chuck on some headphones, or save the episode for an hour alone at the pub!
For the second episode of We Broadcast Beer, we invited Gregg Irwin down to our Clapham Junction store to chat about Weird Beard, and the beer scene in general. Weird Beard are one of our favourite breweries and have been a mainstay ever since we first opened. Gregg, one of the two co-founders, is a person who makes working in the beer scene as great a job as it is. Despite a pretty demanding job, he's always willing to make time for his customers, whether it's guys like us or the people who drink his beer. This, combined with a refreshing and honest perspective on what is happening in the beer world, meant he was someone we aways wanted to chat with. Download this episode to listen to our chat with Gregg, as well as info on upcoming events and more! A quick note that since we recorded this interview, Weird Beard have removed Decadence Stout and Spreadsheet Ninja from their core range. Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; big thanks to Gregg Irwin for taking time to come down to the store and chat to us!
Our very first We Broadcast Beer Episode features the incredible and hugely popular Beavertown Brewery. We invited them down for a Meet the Brewer event in our Balham store and were joined by Cosmo, one of their brewers, who has been with them for the last 2 years or so, and been part of their journey to becoming one of the leading lights in the UKs brewing industry. Beavertown have one of the most interesting stories in beer, and beers that have captured the imagination of both lovers of great beers and those who are only beginning their journey. We learn about their roots as a brewpub, their first foray into a dedicated brewing facility and what the future holds for them. So put some headphones on, sit back and enjoy! Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; big thanks to Cosmo and Charlotte from Beavertown for coming down to the shop and bringing along their amazing beer!
