SomaSim does their revenue sharing a little differently. They treat everyone's hour equally - an hour of coding or design is the same as an hour of art or an hour of QA. That means if art hours are 35% of the game's total development, then artists get 35% of the revenue. Matthew talks about the awesome parts of this model. And he'll discuss how we've had to get creative to make it work as their studio has grown over the past six years. This is an exciting episode that is relevant to everyone that is interested in Indie Development. The biggest risk to any game is over-scoping and not having enough time. SomaSim founders, Matt and Robert, walk us through their process of making their first game within a year and using the lessons learned into making their followup dream game, Project Highrise. Priceless knowledge is shared from quitting to doing Indie, working with contractors, pricing, business development, and securing a publisher for their second game. Please refer to their GDC talk "How to Make and Self-Publish a Game in 12 Months" (http://bit.ly/2xzom8A) Thanks for our Patrons for support: Muti Banda, and Paul Miller Jr., Jarvis Mcgee, Jan Tverdik, Kelvin Reid, Garrett Gustafson Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/gamedevunchained Check us out on our website www.gamedevunchained.com/ Join our community on Discord https://discord.gg/sJtGmpV

Matthew is a co-founder of SomaSim, a Chicago-based indie studio founded in 2013 to create simulation games. He has extensive experience in creative direction, writing, and graphic design. He also has done a few GDC talk such as his latest one called “Running a Post-Apocalyptic Indie Studio.” Those 1-star reviews, those hate comments, and trolls can definitely ruin a person night. Luckily there is the positive side of the community. The people that love your game, that will back you up and give constructive feedback. It's important to stay engaged with your fans and not forget their support. Sponsor Giveaway: I am doing a giveaway sponsored by Game Dev Underground, a marketing and connection platform for indie developers that helps you build, finish and launch better games. The winner gets a 1-hour long indie game marketing consultation with the founder, Tim Ruswick. This is over $1,000 in value, and it can be yours! All you have to do is go to gamedevloadout.com and sign up for the email list. That's it!

While stumbling through the maze that is the Indie Megabooth at PAX West 2016 show host Chris ORegan discovered a booth that was staffed with people wearing construction safety hats and tool belts. At first Chris thought they were still building the booth, but it turns out they were dressed in this way as they were the developers of Project Highrise, a game about simulating the construction and management of a highrise building. Chris chats the developers about Project Highrise along with the many influences the developers used to construct it, no pun intended. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode116.mp3
