Students struggle to cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as draw inferences from the text to write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. This struggle led me to create this scaffolded unit of instruction in the supplemental English course (Freshman Orientation English) geared for at-risk freshman students.

Throughout this unit students brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, and publish a 500 word compare and contrast essay on William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. Mini lessons are taught using the gradual release model on thesis statements containing subtopics, transition words, in-text citations, and compound sentences. By the end of the unit, students publish a compare and contrast essay that includes the above requirements, two sources and is written in MLA format. Through this process, students are given the chance to actually have conversations about their writing, allowing them to become comfortable with the writing process as well as MLA format.
