Why are some Icelandic horses four-gaiters and some five-gaiters? In this program Þorvaldur Kristjánsson, tells us about the genetic prerequisites that determine why some horses can move in four gaits and other in five gaits. He also tells us about how the C-allele, that strengthens the coordination of diagonal movement, has decreased drastically in the Icelandic horse population since the 80´s and he talks about the plan of changing the calculation of breeding assessments and the BLUP-system to make it easier to compar the breeding quality of four- and five-gaited horses. #horsesoficeland

Þorvaldur Kristjánsson is the breeding leader for Icelandic horses in Iceland. He is an agronomist, breeding judge and horse breeder, and in 2014 he defended his thesis "Riding Ability in Icelandic Horses– Effect of Conformation and the ‘Gait Keeper’ Mutation in the DMRT3 Gene". We did an interview with veterinarian Laura Bas Conn at the Swedish Agricultural University (SLU) who is doing research on how different genes influence horses ability to preform in pace race. The Aim of this study is to investigate how mutations I three different genes, involved in motor function, speed, musculature, memory and ability to learn, affect the performance of Icelandic horses. Laura tells us about her research, and the intention to distinguish what makes a horse an "elite pace-racer" by looking into both the physical but also the psychological factors that affects horses ability to go in pace at high speed.  #slu #horsesoficeland

Her thesis has been well acknowledged in the Icelandic horse world, but as is often the case with good research, it both answers questions and raises new ones.  On our tour around Iceland in 2017 we met Gudrún at Hólar where she teaches and does her research.
