There are various ways of referring to the old way of telling time used in Japan that was based on the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. The two most common terms are kojikoku (古時刻) and jūnijishin (十二時辰). Much of the information this episode was based on was gathered from the Japanese-language sources below. Jūnijishin (十二時辰) This is the Japanese-language Wikipedia entry. 昔の時間の古時刻・十二時辰とは?初刻や正刻の鐘の意味は This is an in-depth article focusing on the old system used in Japan for telling time. Although it is not as thorough as the Japanese language articles above, the Japan Times article below does give some general information on the old Chinese Zodiac based system of telling the time that Japan used to use. Telling time with animals In the Chinese Zodiac-based way of telling time the day would start with the hour of the rat (ne no koku) and end with the hour of the boar (i no koku). Below you can see the terms used for all 12 animals/time divisions) and what two hour block each corresponds to. Also it should be noted that both English and Japanese-language sources are unclear on when exactly each two hour block of time begins. In general sources go with wording like "between 11 and 1," thus I have been unable to determine with 100% certainty if, for example, the last minute of the hour of the rat is 12:59 (which seems more likely) or 1:00. While this degree of precision was likely not a matter of concern for most people when this method of telling time was still being used, the question of when exactly each block of time ends is nevertheless one that remains and is unfortunately not solved in the information below. 11:00 p.m - 1:00 a.m. Rat 子 (鼠) ne 1:00 a.m. - 3:00 a.m. Ox 丑 (牛) ushi 3:00 a.m. - 5:00 a.m. 寅 (虎) tora 5:0 am. - 7:00 a.m. Rabbit 卯 (兎) u 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Dragon 辰 (竜) tatsu 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Snake 巳 (蛇) mi 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Horse 午 (馬) uma 1:00 p.m. -3:00 p.m. Sheep 未 (羊) hitsuji 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monkey 申 (猿) 酉 saru 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Rooster 酉 (鳥) tori 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Dog 戌 (犬) inu 9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Boar 亥 (猪) i Information about the two articles by Salvador Jimenez Murguia that were mentioned in this episode can be found below. Send us a textWhat happens when you combine cycling with ziplining? According to Michael, you get one of the most unique adventure experiences available—bike ziplining through the Mexican jungle. After returning from a week-long resort vacation with his family, Michael shares his discovery of this extraordinary activity that lets you pedal your way through the rainforest canopy, over water, and even through caves on a suspended recumbent-style bike. This episode blends travel tales with cycling plans as the duo prepares for their upcoming Bourbon Country Burn adventure in Kentucky. Michael reveals that despite his fractured clavicle not fully healing (now eight weeks into recovery), he's determined to join the event and enjoy the famously smooth roads of Kentucky horse country. The roads, as Adam explains, are maintained to perfection for transporting valuable thoroughbred horses—creating an ideal cycling surface through picturesque landscapes. The conversation weaves through Mexican adventure parks, underwater propulsion devices for "power snorkeling," and the fascinating 2000-year history of ziplining itself. We learn how modern recreational ziplining originated with Costa Rican biologists studying rainforest canopies in the 1970s, and how it's evolved into unique variations like the cycling zipline Michael experienced.Looking ahead to Kentucky, the pair shares their excitement about the Bourbon Country Burn event with its perfect blend of cycling, bourbon tastings, evening bonfires, and community gatherings. They'll be starting their journey on Louisville's historic Whiskey Row before heading to the Kentucky Horse Park campground, where cornhole boards will be set up and bourbon will be shared. For listeners considering joining them, there's even news of an available campsite thanks to a friend who had to cancel.Want to experience the perfect blend of cycling adventure and leisure? Mare reproductive challenges can range from endometritis to ovarian irregularities such as hemorrhagic anovulatory follicles, ovarian hematomas, and persistent corpora lutea, all of which can disrupt normal cycles and fertility. Older mares often face anatomical complications that increase contamination and impair conception. Hormonal tumors such as granulosa-theca cell tumors might spur erratic behaviors and cycle abnormalities, while pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, formerly Cushing's disease) can further dampen reproductive performance by causing abnormal cycles, anovulation, and recurring endometritis. Vigilant diagnostics—including ultrasound, hormone panels, and uterine evaluation—are essential in identifying and managing these issues efficiently. During this Ask TheHorse Live Q&A two experts answer your questions about common mare reproductive problems. This episode is sponsored by Equithrive. About the Experts: Carleigh Fedorka, PhD, assistant professor of equine reproductive physiology at Colorado State University, in Fort Collins, is a global expert in reproductive immunology. Today, it's all about forage. With grass disappearing fast and hay supplies under pressure, Spike and Louise talk about why forage is the foundation of every horse's diet, how to work out what your horse is really getting, and what to do if shortages bite this winter. They also dive into one of the most common yard debates: balancers vs. complete feeds, and why a handful of chaff and a balancer might not be enough for horses in proper work. Episode Highlights Forage under pressure: why shortages are a real concern this winter. Spotting what's missing: practical ways to assess intake and condition. Planning ahead: tips to stretch supplies, reduce waste, and use safe alternatives. Balancers vs. complete feeds: what each really provides and when they work. Feeding myths debunked: from “protein panic” to the fear of feeding too much. Guests Spike the Vet Louise Jones, Connolly's Red Mills
There is a wild, untamed energy within each of us, the same kind of spirit you see in a herd of horses when they pivot together in perfect harmony. It's the essence of who we are before the noise of life layers over it. In this conversation with my guest, Mielle Fox, we explore what it means to return to that Wild Heart energy, how horses mirror back our truth, and the science that proves their role as teachers and healers.Mielle is a multidimensional creative: an advanced numerologist, energy strategist, and lifelong horse lover. From a young age, Katheleen Daigle has had a special gift of being able to communicate with animals. After a career in teaching, she took a leap of faith to establish herself in Texas to help horses and riders with her unique gift. She has surrounded herself with the best experts in the field – vets, shoers, owners and more to help improve the life of our equine athletes. This isn't something that everyone may believe in, but we loved having the opportunity to talk to Katheleen about her background and from our personal experience, she is truly a gift to all of those that have her on their team. A different type of conversation, but one we hope you find as interesting as we did!September is Women In Rodeo Month and this episode along with a ton of other content and coverage is brought to you by Mane 'n Tail and our partners at BarrelRacing.com!

Our guest for this classic episode is Gareth Steel. He is a vet who we asked some very bizarre questions to. Such as which is the easiest animal to operate on, and what's the least erotic image you can show to a dog? It'll make sense when you hear it. Gareth wrote a book called 'Never Work With Animals' and it's really good. Search for it now if you want a copy. Equiosity Episode 342: Horses for Future Jane Myers and The Equicentral System Pt 2 This is part 2 of a conversation Jane Myers on the equicentral system and pasture management. This episode comes from the archives of my Horses For Future podcast that I produced from 2019 to 2021. The podcast explored what horse people can do to help in the climate change crisis. Think of the green plants in your horse's pasture as tiny solar panels. The plants create sugars which they send down into their roots. But they aren't just nourishing themselves. The sugars are transferred to fungi and bacteria in exchange for minerals the plants need. When a pasture is overgrazed, plants can't develop deep root structures. They don't have enough "solar panels" left to do the work. The fungi and bacteria die off, and the soil deteriorates. We can turn this around with better pasture management. It's a win-win situation. Our horses become healthier as we sequester more carbon in our pastures. The Horses for Future podcast began with an exploration of pasture management practices and then looked at other ways in which horse people can make a difference for the health of the planet. So for this weeks equiosity podcast I'm sharing a podcast from the Horses for Future archives. It is an interview with Jane Myers about the Equicentral System. Pastures which are overgrazed or have turned to mud lots can be restored. Jane describes how the equicentral system works to restore overgrazed, damaged pastures. Healthy pastures contribute to healthy horses and a healthier planet. Enjoy!

An English epic poem that follows the exploits of Alfred the Great in his defense of Christian civilization in England from the heathen nihilism of the North. Following a string of defeats at the hands of the invading Danes, a vision from heaven in the river island of Athelney fills Alfred with joy and hope. Though it gives no promise of victory in the coming struggle, it inspires him to rally his chieftains for a last stand against the invading hordes. His adventures lead throughout the country as he gathers his men, and take him through the Danish camps disguised as a minstrel before culminating in the Battle of Ethandune and the prophesying of the enemy's subtle return in the ages to come.
