In this episode of Zone 7, Sheryl McCollum is joined by Caroline McCollum and Huck McCollum to talk about the case involving three horses who were stabbed during a barrel racing event at South Point Casino in Las Vegas. Caroline, a longtime horse rider and criminology student, shares her perspective on what it means to compete with and care for these animals, and how the open, trusting culture of barn life can become a vulnerability. Huck, a juvenile court intake officer and former public defender investigator, explains how a case like this may move through the justice system, including mental health evaluations, prior behavior, and the role social media could play. Together, they look at the trauma this leaves on both riders and horses, the security gaps it exposes, and why animal cruelty cases raise concerns about future violence. Highlights: (0:00) Sheryl McCollum welcomes Caroline and Huck McCollum to Zone 7 and introduces the Las Vegas horse stabbing case (1:00) Three horses, Sully, Detail, and Rocket, are stabbed at South Point Casino and police quickly identify a suspect (3:15) Caroline and Huck bring their own field experience, from horse riding and juvenile court to wildlife forensic training (4:30) Inside the open, social world of competitive riding and why barn access can create security concerns (6:15) Caroline weighs in on animal cruelty as a possible red flag for deeper behavioral concerns (7:30) Huck explains why police withheld the suspect’s name and how being weeks away from turning 18 could affect the case (8:15) Mental health history, school records, prior behavior, and what juvenile court may examine (9:45) The “crush theory” and how months of messages may point to fixation before the attack (13:45) Premeditation, the suspected weapon, and the suspect’s actions after leaving the barn (16:45) Caroline explains why the placement of the wounds matters and how close the horses came to dying (19:30) The permanence of social media, including how posts, messages, and saved chats could help investigators understand the suspect’s behavior (24:45) What this case may change for barn access, event credentials, cameras, and future horse show security Enjoying Zone 7? He grew up eating squirrel and rabbit, didn't taste his first steak until he was 22, and was once told that betting his future on horses was the dumbest thing he'd ever do. He went anyway. Today, Michael Cooper is an NCHA Hall of Famer, with more than six and a half million in lifetime earnings, and he's become one of the most respected cutting horse trainers in the industry. But this conversation is about far more than the wins. It's about the mindset, the mentors, and the hard-earned principles that built a champion, a businessman, and a family man who never forgot where he came from. He explains: *Why your own adrenaline is the real reason you're losing, and how to slow it down when it matters most *The single piece of advice that turned horse winnings into lasting wealth *Why getting comfortable is the secret to winning at the highest level *The brutal honesty with yourself that separates champions from everyone else *What true success actually looks like once the money stops mattering This episode is brought to you by Kerry Kelley Bits and Spurs, Kimes Ranch, and Bluebonnet Feeds. While heat doesn't usually increase calorie requirements, sweating can significantly increase the need for electrolytes, particularly salt, and for some working horses, potassium and other minerals. They explain how temperature, exercise, appetite, pasture intake, and insect pressure can influence body condition and performance. Practical tips include providing plenty of clean water, free-choice salt, appropriate electrolyte supplementation, and monitoring weight and condition throughout the summer. In this episode, I'm sharing the lessons I learned from one of my greatest teachers: my most difficult horse, Tag. We'll talk about the specific lessons that I learned through lots of training and mentorships as well as why this tough training matters just as much for the human as it does for the horse.More than anything, Tag taught me that progress comes from hard work, paying attention, and learning to lead with clarity. Even if you don't own horses, I think there's lots of good thought-provoking parts that you'll still find interesting.Podcast Episode Highlights:Imposter syndrome issues with horse trainingWhy mentorship is importantWhy it's your fault History about my horse TagUnlocking the hindquartersDon't bend too muchSelf-regulation is keyNot trapping himSplitting his attentionFinal thoughtsResources Mentioned in This Podcast Episode:Find your garden seeds and supplies at True Leaf Market and use the code: homestead15 for 15% off your order.Learn more about my book here: http://oldfashionedbook.com/OTHER HELPFUL RESOURCES FOR YOUR HOMESTEAD:Sign up for weekly musings from my homestead: https://jillwinger.substack.com/Get my free homesteading tutorials & recipes here: www.theprairiehomestead.comJill on Instagram: @jill.wingerJill on Facebook: http://facebook.com/theprairiehomesteadApply to be a guest on the Old-Fashioned on Purpose podcast: https://www.theprairiehomestead.com/podcast-guest-applicationDid you enjoy listening to this episode? Everyone wants to know how "bounce back" after having a baby. The truth is, that's not the goal. In this episode, I'm sharing my postpartum fitness plan and the approach I'll be taking during those first weeks and months after birth. Instead of jumping straight into workouts, fat loss, or trying to get my body back as quickly as possible, I'll be prioritizing recovery, sleep, healing, and listening to what my body actually needs. I'll walk you through what my first few weeks postpartum may look like, including why I plan to spend most of the first week resting, when I might begin incorporating light walks and mobility work, and how I'll use my body's feedback, not a rigid timeline, to guide the process. We'll also talk about why pelvic floor health is at the center of my recovery plan and why I believe every woman should consider working with a pelvic floor physical therapist before problems arise, not just after. I'll share why I won't be rushing back into intense cardio, despite the pressure many women feel to lose baby weight as quickly as possible. We'll also discuss the truth about waist trainers, why external support can actually delay core recovery, and what a healthier approach to rebuilding strength looks like. Most importantly, I'm talking about something I think every new mom struggles with: comparison. Because no two postpartum journeys are the same, and comparing your recovery, body, or timeline to someone else's is one of the fastest ways to create unnecessary stress and frustration. If you're pregnant, postpartum, or simply curious about a more sustainable approach to recovery after birth, this episode will give you an honest look at how I'm thinking about this next chapter and why slower may actually be the smarter path forward. In this episode of the Dressage Today Podcast, sponsored by Tribute, we talk to Grand Prix dressage rider Lauren Chumley about her superstar partner Leeloo Dallas and the Dressage Foundation Anne Barlow-Ramsay grant she and the mare received in 2024, her experience training a variety of breeds for dressage and her passion for teaching up-and-coming dressage professionals to prioritize developing young horses for the sport. As always, if you love our podcasts, make sure to subscribe, like and share them with your friends!About Lauren ChumleyLauren Chumley, who's often referred to by her peers as the “coolest dressage trainer,” wasn't born into a horse family, but even from a young age the telltale signs that she indeed had the recessive horse gene were there. From the moment she could read, she started pouring over every horse book she could get her hands on and amassed an unusually large collection of Breyer horses for a 12-year-old that she still has to this day.Lauren pleaded for riding lessons, but her parents who came from humble means thought the “hobby” was too expensive. It was her grandmother, however, who would eventually turn her riding dreams into a reality. One fortuitous summer, Lauren went to stay with her grandparents at the Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia, where her grandfather was stationed. When her grandmother decided she wanted to learn how to ride, Lauren jumped at the chance to take riding lessons with her on the base. The now decorated Grand Prix dressage rider laughs that her parents likely never forgave her grandmother for fostering her budding passion. Following her introduction to riding at Quantico, Lauren started taking lessons at a local barn in Hamilton, Ohio, where she quickly found her calling in dressage. At 14, she started training with dressage trainer Rebecca Stromatt and went on to also worked for Sorum Fjord Farm in Lebanon, Ohio, one of the largest Norwegian Fjord breeding farms in the country, where she gained a wealth of knowledge and experience working with different breeds. After attending clinics with Grand Prix dressage rider Silke Rembacz for three consecutive years, Lauren was invited to join Silke's team as an assistant trainer. In 2011, she branched out to start her own training and sales business at Hilltop Farm based out of New Jersey and Florida. Today, she is a USDF bronze, silver and gold medalist with distinction and has made her mark in both dressage and eventing, proving her diverse talent as a rider. Lauren, who regularly works with Michael Bragdell, has competed multiple self-trained horses through Grand Prix and has earned many USDF year-end and all-breeds awards at the national levels. In 2024, she received one of two Dressage Foundation Anne Barlow-Ramsay grants for U.S.-bred horses with her then 8-year-old home-bred Dutch Warmblood mare Leeloo Dallas, who she is currently competing with at the Grand Prix level. She and one of her other current Grand Prix mounts, Santa Barbara DASH also have an amazing partnership and won the 3* Intermediate I Freestyle at the 2022 Dressage at Devon during a downpour.Lauren is a regular competitor at the USEF Festival of Champions, Dressage at Devon, USDF Regional Championships and the US Dressage Finals. She has high hopes for her pipeline of North American-bred young horses and hopes to start them in the FEI young horse classes in the future.About This Episode's Sponsor: TributeWhat if your horse's nutrition only changed when it truly mattered? Glucose is an essential sugar for horses, but too much of it can be harmful. While diet is your main tool for reducing glucose intake, what can you do when your horse still struggles with glucose and insulin control? And are there medications that can help lower blood glucose? Let's explore one option together. If dietary changes are not enough, other strategies can help manage high glucose and insulin. For instance, veterinarians are now turning to a human drug called ertugliflozin (er-TUG-li-flo-zen) to lower blood glucose with promising results. In this discussion, you'll discover how this drug and others in its class work, what the treatment plan entails, and possible side effects to monitor. I'll also explore the cost of treatment and discuss current research on its use in horses.

Horses have been part of our lives for millennia, helping us plow fields and transporting us to everything from errands to parties to war. And they have ignited our imaginations.Their presence, their grace, that connection we have with them - what is that? They live on grass. And while we have needed them, they don't need us. Yet, at a time when they are no longer needed for practical purposes, there are still 110-120 million horses in the world today. Why is that? And why have they decided to be part of our lives? Are they part of our spiritual evolution? Do they have wisdom for us that can change the way we show up in the world? We think they do. Horses show up without vanity or agenda and can see into the depths of our being. That can be intimidating. In this special Reiki Share and podcast episode, I'm joined by the co-creators of the Horse Wisdom Card Deck — collaborators and artists, Helen Michaels and Joe Ann Kent — as we pull back the curtain on the creation of this deeply transformational deck.Together, we explore:How the horses guided the creation of the deckThe spiritual nature of horses and leadershipThe Divine Feminine and how it is ready to come forwardThe deeper meanings behind some of the cardsHow Reiki, intuition, and animal communication shaped the processWhy this deck arrived nowWhat the horses may be trying to teach humanity in this momentWe also drew cards live during the episode for the messages for our listeners and community. And we will ask for your input - once you experience the energy of the deck - on the name of the deck.If you are ready to dive into deeper authenticity, authority, intuition, healing, and connection - join us, and gather with the wisdom of the herd.______Pam Allen-LeBlanc is a scientist, businesswoman, and Licensed Reiki Master Teacher (LRMT) with the International Center for Reiki Training.Get in Touch with Pam:pam@reikifromthefarm.comwww.reikifromthefarm.comA special thanks goes out to Music from Pixabay for the intro music and to Nate Miller for the meditation music.
