In which Grace and Eddie discuss spooky topics such as Minnesota tubes, varices, and ghost ships. Here is a picture of a Minnesota tube: shorturl.at/dqvA9 Errata: 1. Paloma, in Spanish, means pigeon or dove. 2. Octreotide is usually a 50 mcg bolus followed by 50 mcg/hr gtt 3. Grace mentions fibrinogen replacement — the most ideal way to do this is probably cryoprecipitate, which is more concentrated than FFP. 4. Tornadoes form when warm, humid air collides with cold, dry air. This results in an updraft, which will rotate in the right conditions. The updraft will draw in warm air and water droplets to form a funnel cloud, which spookily descends from the sky and, upon touching the ground, becomes a tornado. Episode 6: Consulates and Consults

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 6, 2020 69:36

In which Grace and Eddie shelter in place, fear trachs, and hypothesize wildly re: mysterious weapons. Educational note: If you are an intern or otherwise unable to picture the components of a trach, you should look up some pictures and videos before we get started. ~~~***EXCITING **~~~ note: Our theme song has been updated to be more inclusive i.e. it now includes Eddie on percussion!!!! Errata: Apple seeds and stone fruits contain amygdalin, which releases cyanide when chewed. Intermodulation is the amplitude modulation of signals containing two or more frequencies due to non-linear behavior of the signal processing equipment or algorithms being used. The Frey effect, or the microwave auditory effect, is when people hear clicks or other sounds due to pulsed or modulated radio frequencies and people aren't super sure why.

Episode 5: Hot Child in the Tundra

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2020 68:46

In which Grace and Eddie discuss febrile seizing babies and the mysterious (and perhaps disturbing) deaths of a group of hikers in the Soviet tundra. The latter half definitely gets a little dark, so you may not want to listen before bed. Errata: 1. The ESETT trial compares fosphenytoin 20 mg/kg, valproate 40 mg/kg, and levetiracetam 60 mg/kg whereas the ConSEPT and EcLiPSE trials compare fosphenytoin 20 mg/kg and levetiracetam 40 mg/kg. Grace was not clear about this and seems to imply that levetiracetam 60 mg/kg is not evidence-based which is not what she meant. 2. Grace says she has "high hopes for this election" which is not at all a dog whistle to Mayor Pete.

Errata: 1. The best plural of octopus is probably octopuses. Octopodes is based on the idea that it's a Greek word and should have a Greek pluralization, but it's widely considered douchey. 2. People did in fact use strychnine in the Tour de France circa early 1900s. 3. The podcast I mentioned is the March 17, 2019 episode of Futility Closet that describes Prosper-Rene Blondlot's "discovery" of N-Rays.
