Well, what a week that was. So why are we unsure about Charlie Kelman?- Season almost over, we can put our feet up, nothing to see here.- Oh...every. damn. time...- Let's Frost/Nixon the elephant in the room. Marti v Nourry. Kieran Maguire is the go-to voice when it comes to football finance — whether it's untangling FFP, breaking down club accounts, or explaining how teams like Chelsea can keep spending without (apparently) breaking the rules. He's a lecturer in football finance at the University of Liverpool, co-host of the Price of Football podcast, and author of the book by the same name. If you've ever seen a financial headline in football and thought, “What does that actually mean?”, chances are Kieran's already explained it better than anyone else. With Daniel Levy recently publishing Tottenham's latest financial results — including a dip in revenue, a collapse in UEFA prize money, and ongoing commercial growth — we thought it was the perfect time to dig into the numbers and ask what it all means for Spurs moving forward. A new series exploring issues in the game today. The Champions League is nearly upon us and it has taken on a slightly bewildering new format. The team try to pick their way through that and any potentially unintended consequences that might arise, as well as looking back at the summer transfer window and the murky world of FFP, PSR and other acronyms. We reckon only Birmingham have got it sussed ...
Leicester City have successfully argued that they can not be punished for PSR breaches as per the Premier League's own rules. On Tuesday it was revealed that the Foxes, who were a Championship outfit in 2023-24 and won promotion back to English football's top tier after a season away, would not face punishment for the breaches after winning an appeal against the Premier League. But how did they escape punishment? Meanwhile, in other FFP related news, Chelsea have been cleared by the Premier League for the sale of two hotels to a sister company to keep them compliant with profit and sustainability rules. Such transactions are not allowed in Uefa competitions, with Chelsea back in Europe in the Conference League this season, and in the English Football League after they closed the loophole in 2021, but the Premier League opted against following suit. The Premier League remains open to closing the loophole through a future vote. On today's show, Ian Croll and Chris Beesley head into the Royal Blue studio to discuss all of the above, as well as much more! Welcome to the latest episode of The Overlap's football history podcast, It Was What It Was. This week Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper tell the story of probably the most-consequential football club takeover ever: When Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003. Before sportswashing was even a word and in an age when Financial Fair Play didn't exist, we examine the background to the most-startling and unexpected deal in Premier League history. And the extraordinary impact it would make, as Chelsea splurged what was at the time an eye-watering £100m in that first summer transfer window, laying the foundations for Chelsea to become a super club that would win 18 major trophies in the Roman era. It transformed the Premier League, threatened Fergie, ruined the latter years of Arsene Wenger's career, caused UEFA to dream up new FFP rules to curb them and paved the way for the era of nation state investors at Manchester City, Paris St Germain and Newcastle United. It Was What it Was goes back to that stunning summer which changed the game and debates whether football was ever the same after the Roman Conquest. Please subscribe to never miss an episode. Stuart Watson and Mark Heath are back to discuss all things Ipswich Town in our second show of the week. The boys start by chatting about the latest in the Sammie Szmodics saga, plus the link to Spurs midfielder Oliver Skipp. Then it's onto Stu's take on the Conor Townsend signing before a big dip into the Mailbag for questions as diverse as FFP compliance and who would play who in Jaws.
