This week on History's Greatest Idiots (Featuring Peter of In The Wheels), we explore two Scottish success stories: cyclist David Millar's fall from grace and redemption, and comic writer Mark Millar's controversial rise to Hollywood riches.Born 4th January 1977 in Malta, David Millar burst onto cycling's scene in 2000, winning the Tour de France prologue and wearing the yellow jersey. He won four Tour stages and became the first British rider to wear the leader's jersey in all three Grand Tours. On 23rd June 2004, whilst dining in Biarritz, French police arrested Millar. They found empty EPO phials and syringes. Millar confessed to doping in 2001 and 2003. He was banned for two years, stripped of his 2003 World Championship, and fired by Cofidis.Returning in 2006, Millar transformed into cycling's most vocal anti-doping advocate. He served on WADA's Athlete Committee, became peloton spokesperson during Operación Puerto, and proved he could win clean with stages in the Vuelta, Giro, and a 2012 Tour victory. He achieved almost identical results in both halves of his career, retiring in 2014.Born 24th December 1969 in Coatbridge, Mark Millar became one of comics' most successful and divisive figures. After The Authority and The Ultimates (Time's "comic book of the decade"), Millar created Millarworld, designing properties to sell to Hollywood. Wanted, Kick-Ass, and Kingsman became films before issues appeared. Netflix purchased Millarworld in 2017.Critical reception has been harsh. Old Man Logan was called "grotesque" and "without substance", Kick-Ass criticised for undermining its premise, Nemesis dismissed as shock value. When asked about using assaults as a plot device, Millar said: "The ultimate act that would be the taboo, to show how bad some villain is..."Politically, Millar supported Brexit as a path to Scottish independence, then resigned from Labour in 2025, calling Keir Starmer's government "nightmarish, totalitarian."Two Millars. One rebuilt his reputation through honesty. The other built a Hollywood empire on controversy.David Millar: From Yellow Jersey to Prison CellMark Millar: Comics, Controversy and Self-Promotionhttps://www.patreon.com/HistorysGreatestIdiotshttps://www.instagram.com/historysgreatestidiotshttps://buymeacoffee.com/historysgreatestidiotsArtist: Sarah Cheyhttps://www.fiverr.com/sarahchey

Buon ascolto. What does it take to be considered one of the greatest of all time? A boatload of major wins doesn't hurt, of course, but how a racer wins can be just as important. Tadej Pogačar's list of victories includes four Tour de France titles, two World Championships, and a remarkable ten Monuments, among many others. They're super-human performances, no doubt, yet it's the Slovenian's willingness to race with his heart and gamble it all that sets him apart, especially in this era of relatively risk-averse specialists.Today's podcast sees Levy speaking with Velo contrinutor Andy McGrath, author of "Tadej Pogačar: Unstoppable," a biography of the modern era's greatest cyclist. They dig into Pogačar's early days as a junior, his family life and his mother's concerns, and how he's able to remain so calm and positive even when it's not going to plan. Oh, and might Pogačar have a secret tractor collection?
Het is eindelijk lente! Hoera! Want in Leidsch Dagblad nogal goed verhaal over vakjes-fietsen. Nog geen plannen in september? The Ride Dolomites. Van 13 t/m 19 september, een geweldig avontuur. An auction lot of six dusty cycling-themed bottles of wine from the 80s provides the inspiration behind Velo Vino, a podcast mini-series that explores some tales from the pro peloton's history through rosé-tinted spectacles.Cycling journalists Felix Lowe and Graham Willgoss invite you to join their trip down memory lane with professional wine buff Chris Maybin as they uncork these aged bottles and sift through the stories and sentiments behind the sediment. In episode 1, the journey from barrel to bidon begins with our intrepid tasters cracking open two bottles of Côtes de Ventoux, produced in 1988 to commemorate the life and career of the legendary French climber René Vietto. The trio discuss the achievements of a quasi-tragic figure who twice came so close to winning the Tour, while Chris explains the potential perils of reacquainting pedal-powered plonk with oxygen after the best part of four decades in a bottle. Special guest Max Leonard (author of Lanterne Rouge and Higher Calling) also addresses the infamous myth that remains synonymous with Vietto's career – the claim that he ordered a doctor to remove a part of his body during the 1947 Tour de France. All four episodes of Velo Vino are brought to you in association with Rouleur magazine and Nyetimber, the English sparkling wine producer and proud backer of British Cycling. Slip into the sipstream of Felix, Graham and Chris as they raise a glass to some Grand Tour tannins of yesteryear.Produced by Matthew Vines. Hosted on Acast. A two minute tyre penalty sparks a full blown war between Henri Pélissier and the Tour’s tyrannical founder. Riders set off at 2am over cratered, post-war roads… and one man finishes the race half-blind with a glass eye. Part 4 dives into rebellion, brutal rules, Belgian domination and the kind of “suffering” that makes modern cycling look comfortable. The BikeRadar news podcast returns, with Simon von Bromley joining Jack Luke to unpack the biggest cycling tech stories of the week. They start with a first look at a new time trial bike spotted under Tadej Pogačar, which appears purpose-built for the Tour de France. Next up is the Factor Monza. Offering much of the speed and ride feel of Factor's flagship models for a lower price, the pair break down whether this more affordable option still delivers the performance that matters. They then turn to two stories from the wider cycling world: an AI-powered Bradley Wiggins coaching service launching from £5 per month, and the announcement of a Lance Armstrong biopic made with his approval. Are virtual coaches the future - and should Armstrong's story be told on screen at all? And finally Jack and Simon finish with last week's top story on BikeRadar.com and a rant of the week curtesy of Jack and a six-year-old Rapha jacket. Learn more about your ad choices. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Guys, get yourselves ready, this is a banger of an ep. I got to sit down with the man himself, the Sweendog. The 16 Wheeler. Sweet 16. Harry Sweeny He's one of the strongest riders in the pelo right now. They don't call him ‘The Truck' for nothing. I spoke to Harry in person over in Adelaide at this year's Tour Down Under and picked his brains about everything from his journey into the sport, his transition from Lotto to EF Education Easypost, how his neurodiversity makes him a better bike racer, and heaps more. Harry's a super interesting guy. He's a consummate professional and leaves no stone unturned in his hunt for being the best athlete he can be. Hearing Sweendog talk through how he prepares for every single race, and the level of detail with which he plans every gel, every corner, every meter of road covered really opened my eyes as to how hard he works. Up until this point, Harry's cut his teeth in the bunch riding as a domestique; turning himself inside out for team mates to great success - pulling guys like Ben Healy to monument podiums and the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France. But, after a conversation with his team boss Jonathan Vaughters, Harry's finding the confidence to ride for himself and show how strong he can be. As JV put it, ‘being 10% more of an arsehole'. Not long after we recorded, Harry's efforts were rewarded with an absolutely stellar podium finish at the Tour Down Under - his first World Tour GC Podium. It's a fantastic result, and - I think - marks a real shift in focus; he knows he's got the engine to go toe-to-toe with the big guys, and now he's proved it out there on the road. I loved chatting to Harry, and I hope you guys enjoy listening to one of the most hard working, enthusiastic pros out there. Prefer to watch along? This episode's up on our YouTube channel too.

Dr. José Areta and colleagues recently carried out a human intervention study examining how a pronounced, short-term energy deficit interacts with an aerobic training stimulus to shape endocrine, metabolic, and skeletal muscle proteomic adaptations. The core premise is that "low energy availability" is often discussed in a largely unidirectional risk framework, yet human physiology evolved under intermittent energy scarcity, and therefore adaptive responses may be more nuanced than "energy deficit equals impaired adaptation." The study used tightly controlled diet and exercise, repeated muscle biopsies, and dynamic proteomic profiling to quantify both abundance and synthesis rates of hundreds of individual muscle proteins. This enables a more granular view of "muscle quality" and phenotype than traditional bulk muscle protein synthesis measures. The findings were incredibly interesting and could have implications for how we view the impact of energy deficits and exercise response. We discuss the implications for athletes who routinely encounter transient within-day or multi-day energy deficits, for weight loss contexts, and for broader questions around healthspan and ageing biology. Stick around for the final moments of the interview. You won't regret it. A must-listen for photographers, creatives, cyclists, and anyone curious about what happens beyond the barriers. In this final chapter with Ashley and Jered Gruber, we go fully inside the work. What does it really take to create meaningful images in professional cycling — when conditions aren't perfect, expectations are sky-high, and every decision happens at race speed? From recalibrating a “five-out-of-ten day” into something publishable, to the unique pressure of iconic climbs like Mont Ventoux and Alpe d'Huez, Ashley and Jered break down the invisible labor behind race photography; stage research kilometre by kilometre, fighting logistics, editing in the car, uploading from hotel rooms late at night, and still finding the energy to tell the story on social media. We talk about roadside encounters with fans, unexpected human moments, and the strange contrast between riders fighting for their careers and crowds treating race day like a party. The conversation also turns deeply personal — covering burnout, injury, recovery, insecurity, creativity, and the long-term sustainability of a freelance career in modern cycling media. From shooting the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes, to rebuilding after a devastating crash at the Tour of Flanders, to finding grounding at home after months on the road — this episode is about process, endurance, passion, and finding beauty where no one else is looking.A must-listen for photographers, creatives, cyclists, and anyone curious about what happens beyond the barriers.________
The Tour de France was born brutal. In Part 2 of this series, Mick and Titus unpack cheating, sabotage, insane mountain stages and the mad rules that turned cycling into pure chaos. With the racing hotting up all over the pro cycling world, we return with the same Friebe-Birnie-Hatch trio as last week to review the latest action and talking points. The biggest news story of the week was ASO's decision to hand Spanish outfit Caja Rural a Tour de France wild card at the expense of the Unibet Rose Rockets. We discuss to what extent Caja's place on the startline in Barcelona is justified and the case for the opposition i.e. the Rockets. One man who'll certainly be heading to the Tour, barring accident, is Remco Evenepoel. His three wins in his first three outings for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe in Mallora augur well for the rest of season. Daniel's question is: could Remco even be the man to ruin Tadej Pogačar's Sanremo dream?Another candidate for that role, of course, is Mathieu van der Poel. He won his eighth world cyclocross title at the weekend, which has us wondering about the Winter Olympics extending his career in the discipline.EPISODE SPONSORSIndeedIf you are looking to hire someone for your company, maybe the best way isn't to search for a candidate but to match with Indeed. #682: Grab the FREE handbook: affordanything.com/financialgoals For 76 years, the British cycling team lost — every season, without exception. Then they changed how they approached improvement, focusing on tiny gains instead of dramatic overhauls. In today's episode, we unpack how they became champions – and apply those same tactics to our financial life. This episode originally aired in January 2025. It was our most popular episode of the year on Spotify. You hear how the British cycling team used “aggregation of marginal gains” — tiny improvements like adjusting bike seats, improving sleep with custom mattresses, even repainting floors so dust was easier to spot. Those details seemed trivial on their own. Over time, they added up to Olympic gold medals and Tour de France wins. We apply the same logic to money. The episode lays out a full roadmap for the year, broken down by quarter. Early weeks focus on foundations. You start by writing a short financial motivation statement, calculating your net worth, choosing one metric to track, and creating a spending decision catchphrase that forces trade-offs into the open. Later weeks shift into action. You raise your savings rate by one percent at a time. You declutter physical items that cost money to store. You add a waiting period before purchases. You trim subscriptions, set up credit monitoring, commit to meal planning, and try a one-week spending fast to reset habits. As the year progresses, the tweaks move into optimization. You plan for irregular expenses, build buffers for price shocks, automate goals, check tire pressure to save on fuel, and calculate the real cost of transportation. You review investment fees, workplace benefits, insurance deductibles, and estate planning basics. Toward the end of the year, the focus turns to fine-tuning and reflection. You map out major expenses for the next five years, create rules for handling market volatility, repeat your most effective tweak, and close the year by reviewing progress and setting intentions for 2026. The episode frames the year as a steady climb. One week. One small move. No overhaul required. Just consistent attention, applied over time.
