Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Guys, the Dauphi…I mean the ‘Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes' has just finished, which can mean only one thing; Le Tour is just around the corner! This month's edition of the Race Communiqué with me, EF Education Easypost DS Tom Southam, and Jayco AlUla pro rider Luke Durbridge is the perfect pod to wrap up the racing we've just witnessed and get you in the mood for the big one! We kick off this month's ep with our first listener question! That's right, we've been doing this for three years and we've finally got our first question! Remember, drop us an email at contact@lifeinthepeloton.com with your questions and we might just feature them on the pod! The Dauphine Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is the ultimate warm up race for the Tour de France, and it always provides a great insight into how the favourites are going, as well as giving us a bit of a sneak preview of some of the stages. With the big three - Pogi, Jonas, and Remco - all favouring altitude camps, the Dauph…..race was set to be a showdown between the young French hope Paul Seixas, UAE Emirates defector to Lidl Trek Juan Ayuso, and Pogi's Mexican prodigy Isaac Del Toro. Things started with a bang for Tom's EF team with French superstar Alex Baudin taking the first stage and with it the yellow jersey, which they valiantly defended up until the final weekend. Young Aussie Luke Tuckwell put himself in the 60 rider breakaway on stage 6 and took over the lead of the race and, with Paul Seixas crashing hard on stage 7 and eventually abandoning at the start of the last day of racing, it was Tuckwell's to lose. In the end Isaac Del Toro was just too strong and took the overall victory by just under a minute on young Luke. At just 21 years old, this is an absolutely massive breakthrough ride for Luke. He's out there swimming with the Dolphins in his first year pro! I was stoked to have a quick catch up with him and hear his thoughts on the race, and what this means for the rest of his summer. Durbo's PeloChat is one for you data nerds out there. Last year, he said Tour de Suisse was the toughest stage race he's ever done, but this year's Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes might just take the crown. He's going through the TrainingPeaks data to compare the races and categorically decide which was the bigger challenge. This isn't just about the training load, though; these races can be a real hot bed for sickness and - being so close to the Tour - if you get sick you could wreck your chances of a 3 week all expenses paid trip around France in July. Talking Tactics time next, and Southam's going all in for the mega break. We've seen it a few times already this year; first at Liege and then again at the Dauphine, and it's starting to become a tactic that teams like EF and Uno X are banking on to bring home some big results. Full teamwork, everyone committed, reap the rewards. Guys, this pod is an absolute banger. I absolutely love chatting to Southam and Durbo when the race season really kicks off because they're both still out there amongst it, and their insight is just amazing. This is the kind of perspective I feel really privileged to be able to share with you all. Roll on July! Cheers, Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! We discuss whether they are a genuine player welfare initiative, or a (very) thinly veiled advertising slot, whether there will ever be evidence they are changing the dynamics of matches, the concept of momentum (real or imagined?), and why a combination of heat and end of season fatigue might explain some lacklustre performances so far?Teenage phenoms had mixed fortunes in the Diamond League last week. Cooper Lutkenhaus flew (literally, across the line) to another win, this time over the Olympic champion in the 800m, while Gout Gout stuttered in his Diamond League 200m debut. Gout partly bounced back in Ostrava, but he highlights again the challenge of unrealistic expectations. Speaking of Ostrava, Werro was fast again, while Bol impressed in her debut, but is, for now, a generation and 3 seconds behind the big two. Can she improve enough to legitimately challenge them, and what will it take for Werro and Hodgkinson to get closer to that WR, from a pacing and race strategy perspective? We discuss.A genuinely wild NCAA Championships in Eugene produced what might be the best single meeting of sprint performances in history, headlined by a shock 110m hurdles world record from 20 year old Ja'Kobe Tharp. We work through the collegiate records that fell in the 400, 200 and 100, and ask when next these athletes will run as fast as they did last week?Adaejah Hodge was one outstanding performer, clocking the 5th fastest time ever over 100m, a 10.63s. Her backstory asks some uncomfortable questions about a secret doping ban, a case resolution agreement, and a high school coach who was the target of the investigation. We unpack the details and ask whether the sport is getting the trade-offs right?Letrozole, fertility treatment, and an unusually candid announcement from double world champion Gudaf Tsegay explain why her four month doping suspension is one of the more sympathetic cases we have coveredRemco Evenepoel's threshold power numbers were revealed in his latest YouTube video, and we discuss what 425 watts for an hour actually means heading into the Tour de France, why durability rather than fresh power might decide the race, and why the one hour threshold power may be less of an issue for the Belgian than his 20 to 40 min climb powerAnd finally, some good news from the Discourse community: Supporter club member Sophie coached an athlete using some of the heat adaptation advice from our listener community to help prepare for altitude, and the athlete went on to win a European uphill running title by over two minutes Hosted on Acast. All eyes were on one rider going into the Dauphine 2026 (or Tour Auvergne Rhône-Alpes 2026). By the time it was over, the actual winner has us wondering why on earth we hadn't always known he'd win. Ned Boulting, David Millar and Pete Kennaugh break down every stage of what turned out to be one of the most revealing weeks of racing before the Tour de France. Pete was on the ground as a DS, and gives us the inside scoop on what it was like from the best seat in the house. The race might've left us with more questions than answers when it comes to the Tour de France in July: Is Paul Seixas ready for the pressure of being France's next Tour winner? Is Isaac Del Toro's a GC contender for the Tour himself, or is he purely there in services of Tadej Pogacar? And why is Pete in a river? Oh, and it's Pete's birthday! Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin break down Isaac del Toro's impressive win at the Tour Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes (aka Critérium du Dauphiné) and discuss what Del Toro's dominant win, Paul Seixas crashing out, Juan Ayuso looking strong in 3rd, and previously unknown rider Luke Tuckwell finishing second mean for the upcoming Tour de France. They dive into the tactics and moves that won Del Toro the race, debate whether this form means he can challenge for the podium at the Tour, and briefly preview this week's Tour de Suisse. We'll be back next week with new episodes. In the meantime, in honor of next month's Tour de France, we're revisiting one of the most infamous sports scandals of the early 2000s:Lance Armstrong's determination to win helps him survive cancer and become cycling's biggest star in the early 2000s. But his ruthless desire to be the best leads him to create a secret cheating scheme. It fuels him to a historic Tour de France winning streak—but requires an elaborate cover-up that includes bullying anyone who tries to expose him, even his teammates. After he's exposed and falls from grace, his pride and stubbornness makes his apology tour feel more like backpedaling to save his reputation.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week on the GCN Racing News Show, we dive into the incredible 425-watt FTP revealed by Remco Evenepoel and analyse what his power-to-weight ratio means for his Grand Tour ambitions against Pogačar and Vingegaard. We also break down a massive warning shot fired by UAE Team Emirates ahead of the Tour de France, with Isaac Del Toro continuing to prove he is a pure racer and winner.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin break down the first six stages of the Tour Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes (aka Criterium du Dauphiné) and discuss how the upside-down GC situation, with pre-race favorites Paul Seixas and Isaac del Toro over three minutes down to relative unknown Luke Tuckwell, will play out heading into the final two brutal mountain stages. They also go through Remco Evenepoel's recent release of power numbers and debate whether his unorthodox lead-in to the Tour de France will pay off or lead to more stage-racing frustration.

What does it take to photograph elite athletes pushing their bodies to the point of collapse, or freeze the motion of cars hurtling by at speeds that blur the line between control and catastrophe? Two of our favorite recent podcasts went deep inside those worlds: one with Phil Penman and Kristof Ramon on the brutal beauty of competitive cycling, and the other with Camden Thrasher and Jamey Price on the relentless sensory overload that comes with photographing motor sports. While our video podcast studio gets its finishing touches, we're revisiting our archive for an encore that pairs the best of both sports—from the many stages of suffering baked into professional cycling to the wild mix of visual stimulation and sleep deprivation that comes with shooting a 24-hour endurance race. In each conversation, you'll find sparks of enlightenment that happens when photographers who thrive on adrenaline get a chance to really talk shop. The excerpts here contain the highlights. Yet, the full episodes are also worth your time—links to those are in the timeline below. And make sure to subscribe @BHPodcastNetwork to get our latest updates on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Guest Bios: British-born, New York-based photographer Phil Penman has documented the ever-changing scene of New York City's streets for more than 25 years. and he has quite a bit of experience in the world of professional cycling himself. In his career as a news and magazine photographer, Phil has photographed major public figures and historical events. His reportage following the 9/11 terrorist attack was featured in major print publications and media broadcasts worldwide, and his work covering New York City's pandemic lockdown is in the collection of the U.S. Library of Congress. In addition to exhibiting at Leica galleries in New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and London, Phil's signature street photography has appeared in international exhibitions as far afield as Venice, Berlin, and Sydney. He also tours the world teaching photo workshops for Leica Akademie. Phil's books, "Street" published in 2019, and "New York Street Diaries" published in 2023 both became best-sellers and have been featured at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Kristof Ramon is a pro-cycling photographer who covers some of the world's most prestigious races, including the Tour de France, the Giro d' Italia, the Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix. Born and raised in Belgium, Kristof discovered photography while attending film school at age 19. He eventually followed his passion for cycling and photography and has focused exclusively on this sport since 2011. Working under the name Kramon, his talent for storytelling and his ability to capture the atmosphere and raw emotion of racing makes his images stand out from typical race photography. Kristof's reputation has earned him the respect and trust of many of the biggest racing teams and riders - which is why he's able to capture such extraordinary in-between moments and behind-the-scenes images. The riders are always his primary focus, as evidenced in his close-up portraits of racers caked in sweat, mud, dust, snow, and grime. Kristof's first book, The Art of Suffering, was released in June 2024 by Laurence King Publishing. Camden Thrasher is a motor sports photographer with a distinctive ability to capture unique scenes of fast action. Growing up in Vancouver, Washington, it was the sound of engines from a nearby racetrack that first drew him to motor sports. After becoming a fixture at the track with his camera during high school, Camden studied automotive design and engineering in college, expecting to work as an engineer or on a pit crew. But the money he was making as a side hustle with his camera convinced him to stick with photography, and he hasn't looked back since. Using a unique slow shutter speed method, perfected over many exposures, Camden revels in showcasing the abstract qualities of gleaming metal, bright lights, and dynamic action that are hallmarks of this sport. Now based out of Atlanta, Georgia, Camden's work has been commissioned by top racing teams and featured in a wide range of media, from print magazines to automotive branding campaigns. Jamey Price is an automotive photographer based in Charlotte, North Carolina, whose motor sports work has taken him to more than 25 countries, and across most of the continental US. Jamey's photography career began while he was competing as a thoroughbred horse racing jockey and exercise rider. During this time, he completed more than 50 races, notching 11 wins in the saddle. His life in horse racing was eventually compiled into the self-published book Chasing: Racing Life in England & Ireland. Yet, in 2011, Jamey's photography career switched from horses to horse-power. Since he began chasing race cars, his images have been published worldwide in magazines, distributed by sports imagery wire services, and featured by top commercial clients. Additionally, Jamey is a LEXAR Elite Artist, since 2014. A monthly pledge is all it takes! In this show:Switzerland's Audrey Werro delivered a stunning plot twist in the women's 800m, running the third fastest time in history (1:53.98) in Stockholm to beat a personal best from Keely Hodgkinson. Suddenly the world record conversation has two names in it. We discuss Werro's emergence and potential, the tactical error that may have cost Hodgkinson slightly, and what this means for the possibilities that the oldest world record in the sport falls this yearWhere does Femke Bol fit into all this? The Dutch 400m hurdles star changed events in search of new challenges, but the event is evolving so fast that the challenge looks significantly greater and she's not even raced outdoors yet! We discuss whether her 400 meter speed is a genuine weapon or whether the 400-800 double is as rare as it is for good reasonCooper Lutkenhaus is the most exciting teenager in track and field, already a world indoor champion, and now a Diamond League winner. We talk about his pedigree and potential, with Gareth nothing a multi-sport background that augurs well for his longevity. Challenges and 'road bumps' await, but he has a ceiling that may lie beyond the current world recordKirsty Coventry said she doesn't believe in paying Olympic athletes, and it has not landed well. Global Athlete has responded with a proposal for interim payments and a breakdown of the IOC's finances that is staggering. The IOC is sitting on nearly five billion dollars in reserves, and Global Athlete are asking for eight percent of the Paris broadcasting revenue. We ponder why Coventry made that statement knowing it would invite significant blowback, and what it reveals about the pressure she is under from inside the IOC. We also speculate on whether there are any good reasons to avoid paying Olympic athletesAnna van der Breggen lost the women's Giro on the final day from the pink jersey, her second Grand Tour lead lost this year. We explore why smaller team sizes in the women's peloton make tactical racing both more unpredictable and more compelling, and why the women's Tour de France is shaping up to be exceptionalThe UCI's weekly rule update: no more front jersey pockets, bike computers limited in size, finishing straights must now be at least 200 meters, and an appeal against the Belgian court ruling on gear ratios. We work through each one, pick out the ones that make sense and the ones that really don't, and ask again why the SAFER data hasn't been made public to respond some of the criticisms the UCI are receivingChristian Eriksen collapsed again during an international friendly, this time saved by his implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Ross explains what the device actually does, how often it fires appropriately versus inappropriately, and why Erikison's second event raises serious questions about whether continuing to play is tenableAnd finally, a listener on Discourse solved the mystery of why Shohei Ohtani's baseball salary looked so low on the Forbes rich list. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Randy and Dean Warren talk about the latest in professional bicycle racing. American road race champion Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) wins the sprint out of the break in stage 4 at the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes race in France. The formerly named Criterium du Dauphine race features many top riders preparing for the Tour de France (except no Jonas or Tadej this year). The Warren brothers recap the one day race in Belgium and the exciting Giro d'Italia Women's race and look forward to the Tour de Swiss and US Nationals road races.
This week Chris has found himself in the wars again with a torn meniscus in his knee. This video explains how coaches can use the TrainingPeaks Performance Management Chart to balance fitness, fatigue, and form, while still reading the rider behind the numbers. The goal is to reduce volume, maintain enough intensity to stay sharp, and let fatigue fall without losing hard-earned adaptation. For a three-week race like the Tour, the best taper is individual, controlled, and timed so the rider arrives not just fit on paper, but genuinely ready to race. The Training Management Chart is just one of the amazing tools you will find in Training Peaks, If you want to go and check out this incredible training tool go to https://bit.ly/4qWyEKK and use ROADMAN – 20% off an annual TrainingPeaks Premium subscriptionParlee Cycles "Whether it's a tough day, a gruelling training session, an epic road trip or sitting on the side of the road, exhausted and wondering how you'll get to the top... Go check out our FREE Skool community, it's got amazing tools in there and a thriving community of cyclists - https://www.skool.com/roadman/aboutIn July 1998, a routine customs stop on a quiet road between Belgium and France cracked open the biggest scandal cycling had ever seen. Inside a team car heading to the Tour de France was enough EPO, testosterone, and syringes to expose a secret the sport had spent years hiding. But the drugs were only the beginning. What followed was chaos: police raids, rider strikes, shattered heroes, and a Tour de France collapsing in real time. The Festina Affair didn't just expose one team — it revealed an entire system. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP You don't have a career in pro cycling as long as Matteo Trentin's without being strong, smart, and totally dedicated to the sport. I was so excited to sit down with Matteo when I was across in Europe during the Spring Classics and find out more about the life and career of one of the wiliest riders in the peloton. That's right, guys, this month's ep sees me spinning a yarn with Matteo Trentin over a crisp acqua frizzante - it was in between Wevelgem and Flanders, after all - and hearing the story of his career on the bike. Since turning professional with Quickstep at the end of 2011, Matteo's bounced between some of the biggest teams in the sport; from Greenedge to CCC, through to UAE Emirates and now riding for Tudor Pro Cycling. Along the way he's bagged himself three stage wins at the Tour de France, four stages at the Vuelta, a stage at the Giro, AND, as if that wasn't enough, a European Championships title ahead of none other than Wout van Aert and Mathieu Van Der Poel. But he's not just good on paper. Watch any classic bike race, and more often than not you'll see Matteo right there in the thick of the action during the decisive moment. He never misses. Over a decade and a half in the sport, he's built up a reputation as being one of the most intelligent racers in the whole bunch, and I loved hearing about his mentality in the races, his ability to surf the bunch, and how he always looks out for ‘the watch dog'. At just 17 years old, Matteo served a short ban for a salbutamol positive. I wanted to find out how this shaped the rest of his career, and Matteo's open and candid answer speaks volumes about his professionalism and his mindset as a rider. This is a real racer's episode. We talk about the grit and grime of the sharp end of the Spring Classics, the harsh reality of coming back from injury and disappointment, and what it takes to have a long and successful career like Matteo's. I absolutely loved my chat with Matteo, and I hope you do too. If you followed this year's classics then you'll know, sadly, a few days after recording this ep Matteo hit the deck at the Tour of Flanders and broke his collarbone…for the first time in his career - which, if you ask me, is a pretty good ratio in 16 years pro. He's on the comeback trail now and is getting ready to return to the pelo again and show those young guns how the vintage riders do it; with race craft, dedication, and a touch of Italian flair. Crack open a bottle of vino, plate up the antipasto, and get your ears around this awesome chat with Matteo Trentin. Cheers Mitch This episode is sponsored by JOIN Cycling.
