Matej Mohorič has built his reputation on his grit, determination and pioneering descents. He was pedaling in the super tuck on his way to winning the U23 World Championship in 2013... and later used a new innovation - the dropper post - to his first monument win, securing the 2022 Milan San-Remo title. His interview in the aftermath of his third Tour de France victory this year, united a peloton in admiration. Few had the ability to express the challenges Matej had faced in professional cycling but every single pro understood the feelings he expressed. In this conversation with Bobby and Jens we catch up with Matej shortly before his family holiday! Bobby and Jens is a Shocked Giraffe production for Velo. Boy band sensation *NSYNC reunited at last week's MTV Video Music Awards, igniting strong feelings of early 2000s nostalgia. As Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky speak at the U.N. General Assembly today, where does the war in Ukraine stand now, and can the U.S. afford to keep sending aid money there? What would a Chat GPT-generated college essay look like, and how much would it threaten the admissions process for prospective students? Tour de France women battled sexism, chauvinism, and stigma to start their own race in the 80s. Then decades passed without an official women's race until last year.

Five Americans have been released from prison in Iran. In exchange, the U.S. released five Iranian prisoners and gave Iran access to $6 billion in oil revenues that were previously frozen under sanctions. Borzou Daragahi, journalist and nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council's Middle East Program, joins us. And, American cyclist Sepp Kuss has won Vuelta A España, the Spanish version of the Tour De France. He is the first American to win in more than a decade. Kuss joins us to talk about the victory. Then, some of the Supreme Court's recent decisions have spurred comparisons to the decisions of the late 1800s. Randall Kennedy, a professor at Harvard Law School, joins us to talk about these comparisons ahead of the new term beginning next month.
Pete Stetina grew up in a famous cycling family and became a highly accomplished pro road racer who raced the Giro D'Italia four times, the Tour de France twice and the Vuelta Espana twice. When he started dabbling in gravel racing, in 2019, he was still doing 80 race days a year in the World Tour while winning iconic events like the original recipe Belgian Waffle Ride. That's when he pulled the ripcord on what most cyclists would consider a dream career to pursue new frontiers on the dirt full time. Pete is a big character in the grand story of gravel racing and has animated the many conversations about the present and future of the sport while nabbing top results. Pete has been interviewed and written about ad infinitum and there's a lot more to his story than what you've heard so far and have seen on social media. I caught up with Pete a few days after the first ever Gravel National Championship, which he crashed out of early on. I'm excited to bring this conversation to you. It covers a lot of new ground and I hope it gives you a more dimensionalized look at Pete as a human being, parent and competitor. You can find Pete on Instagram @pstetina.
In the picturesque landscape of Prince Edward Island, Canada, a growing problem has emerged involving 10 Acciona turbines, installed back in 2014. These once-reliable turbines now have significant main bearing issues, necessitating extensive overhauls. This development has created tension, given that these turbines come equipped with a robust 15-year warranty, yet power production has plummeted by a staggering 70%. In the most recent edition of PES Wind Magazine, Eleven-I takes center stage to shed light on the advantages of in-blade accelerometers and CMS monitors. Rosemary and Phil join forces to dissect the engineering intricacies, delving into both the benefits and associated costs of augmenting blade sensors. The burning question of whether flow batteries can make a meaningful contribution to the energy grid is also on the table. Notably, the US Department of Energy (DOE) is extending a generous offer of nearly $400 million in loans to EOS Energy Enterprises, with the aim of establishing a state-of-the-art factory in Pennsylvania, capable of churning out a staggering 8GWh of flow batteries annually. Rosemary, our resident expert, takes the reins to elucidate the physics underpinning flow batteries, while Phil introduces Allen to the myriad potential applications these innovations hold for the power grid. And, as the cherry on top, we shine the spotlight on the Timbermill Wind Project in scenic North Carolina, our Wind Farm of the Week! Phil Totaro: Oh, I, I've got a helmet. Don't worry. It's a fancy, it's a fancy one. And it's very aero. It's I, I won't give, give them shameless product placement, but it's, you know, if, if you've watched the Tour de France or you're watching the Vuelta España right now cycling race. You, you will see them wearing the same ones in the individual time trial. Allen Hall: Well, we were just at a NASCAR race and one of the things I was paying attention to was the helmets that they wear. And recently there was an accident in NASCAR. This car literally just spun end on end for about 10 rotations and then hit the dirt. And the guy walked out of it and I thought, my gosh, helmets have really improved over the last couple of years. I'm not sure several years ago to be able to walk away from that as well. And hopefully they're using the same technology in your helmet, Phil, because. You're going really fast. You're like probably going too fast. Phil Totaro: No, I'm actually, it's, it is for, for where I live, which is Santa Barbara, California, it's a fantastic way of getting around town and any place that actually has the infrastructure with a lot of bicycle lanes and, and you know, just good infrastructure for being able to do this, it's a, it's a much better way for me to be able to get around town than a car and it's faster. Less time and less money parking, et cetera. So it's it, it works out all right. Allen Hall: See Phil saving the planet one scooter at a time. So up at the Hermanville wind farm in Eastern Prince Edward Island, Canada, they're having a big problem with wind their wind farm, which is only producing about 10 percent of the power that it's supposed to, the farm opened up in 2014 and despite having a 15 year warranty.

Slam the Gavel welcomes Angus Williams to the podcast. Angus Williams discusses The Earhart Club and and our conversation segued into a wonderful and deliberate conversation about the overt fraud in Jefferson County, Kentucky family Court and the bigger picture of cultural curation which s really an ANNIHILATION OF OUR CHILDREN. Angus started The Earhart Club as a love letter to his daughter. He has spent his career working as a Physical Therapist, mentor and teacher with a special interest in leadership, team building and drawing all people forward toward their unrealized potential. In serving thousands of people, he landed on the theory that the epidemic of our time is loneliness – a lack of meaningful connection not just with others but so often with ourselves. Angus explains that we have lost our own, unique voice to the expectations of others. Making a distinction between our ego and our spirit – our spirit is who we are, the truth, our soul, the gift of God within us and our ego is our mind, our perception of who we are which is fed from the outside, which is parents, teachers, culture, media and more. Our culture has been curated to a tug of war between our mind (ego) and our spirit (self) giving rise to a dispiritedness that is the starting point for so much of the modern mental health conversation. A child's authentic voice is not just what they say but also their behaviors, their values – their voice is their spirit. The Earhart Club is for his daughter to grow up in a world where her voice is not just an idea but a responsibility and to REDUCE teen SUICIDES, ANXIETY, DEPRESSION and ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS by 90% over 25 years. The Earhart Club, serving over 3,000 children, plus a trusted adult, so over 6,000 human lives have been impacted with measurable outcomes. We exposed the abuse of custodial evaluations, the collusion between all parties, the exploitation of the most vulnerable. Angus used a Lance Armstrong, Tour de France example to highlight the utter corruption and existential threat to jurisprudence and the rule of law posed by the self-serving nature of all parties in the "club" of family law and the destruction of any OUTSIDER who DARES to go off script. Angus also described that a corrupt lawyer is not made overnight but like Ted Bundy it is the result of 10,000 micro-decisions and violations of one's conscience on the way to an insidious collaborative venture with the DEVIL. This is the BUSINESS of mutually assured DEMOLITION, while the protagonists get paid for serving the child's "BEST INTERESTS."To Reach Angus Williams: Earhartclub.org, Instagram and Facebook: The Earhart ClubThis episode of Slam the Gavel is sponsored by CPSprotect Consulting Services. In today's episode, I talk to professional cyclist, Ryan Gibbons. Ryan is a 29-year-old National Champion cyclist from South Africa, competing right now with the UAE Emirates Team. His pro career started when he was 21, but he didn't even know you could get paid for riding a bike at the time!! He took his chance to go pro because it paid basically the same as a good corporate job in South Africa at the time, and how he's raced all around the world in competitions like the Tour de France and the Olympics. Check out Ryan on Instagram and Twitter @RyanGibbons23, and you can even follow his bike rides on Strava @RyanGibbons. If you've ever wanted to learn about the not-so-glamorous life of a pro cyclist, you'll love this episode. In this conversation, you'll enjoy 3 BIG things: - Why he consumes the sugar equivalent of 4 Coca-Colas per HOUR (!!!) - The one thing he WON'T do to become a better cyclist - And the KEY difference that separates amateur and pro cyclists Enjoy those 3 things… plus a bunch more ear nuggets along the way.

Rob Hatch has been the voice of some of modern cycling's most incredible moments - Pogacar beating Roglic in the 2020 Tour de France finale; to the older Slovene's revenge in this year's Giro his words have become as memorable as the pictures that he married them to. But as Bobby and Jens learn, the role is far from straightforward. This eye opening conversation highlights the incredible lengths he goes to in order to prepare for a race, how he manages with remote broadcasts and the changes to his job as full day broadcasts become the norm. We get a full guide around his home studio, discover his route into the sport, why he loves the sport of cycling in the first place and how he kept broadcasting when tragedy hit the peloton. In this week's regular episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel and Lionel are joined by Team Jayco-AlUla Director of High Performance and Racing Matt White to reflect on the UCI ‘Superworlds', Jayco's Tour de France and the start of cycling's transfer window - and look ahead to the Vuelta a España. Before that, we recap a busy week of news, including the announcement that former British Cycling and Team Sky doctor Richard Freeman has been handed a four-year ban for possession of a banned substance and twice lying to UK Anti-Doping investigators. We ask the question - are some or even all of successes amassed on Freeman's watch now tarnished?
Tom Whalley, producer of Breakfast with Boz, takes over the mic this week and covers the first Super Worlds in Scotland
The pressure to be perfect is on the rise and it affects our everyday lives - from social media to parenting, work to hobbies. I sat down with Thomas Curran, professor of psychology and behavioral science at the London School of Economics, to unravel the complexities of perfectionism, providing you with knowledge and tools to strive for a healthier mindset. Thomas's expertise and extensive research culminates in his book "The Perfection Trap: Embracing the Power of Good Enough," where he guides us to reflect on the expectations we set for ourselves, the harmful comparisons we make, and how our relentless pursuit of success can often lead to failure and setbacks. We'll navigate the world of athletics, where the pursuit of perfection is often unrivaled. From the grueling challenges of the Tour de France to my own personal racing experiences, we'll examine how striving for perfection can leave us feeling empty. Let's tap into embracing a new definition of success and cultivate self-compassion along the way. Because isn't it beautiful to enjoy each day as you live it? Here are some key takeaways: Understanding the three types of perfectionism: self-oriented, socially prescribed, and avoidant perfectionism The role of social media in perpetuating comparison and discontent The problem with growth mindset; it can lead to a constant need for more progress without accepting plateaus and regressions Why high performing athletes can feel empty without a first place medal because of the emphasis and celebration of one winner Practical strategies for counteracting perfectionistic tendencies, such as self-compassion and embracing our own humanity Links: Learn more about Thomas Curran Read The Perfection Trap by Thomas Curran Sign up for my weekly newsletter! Bobby and Jens spoke to Kevin Vermaerke just days after the "hardest ever world championship road race" in Glasgow to discuss why this wunderkind is getting American cycling fans excited. We discover how he killed the time during the protest on course, his thoughts of leading the race and what it's like to tackle a challenging course that was raced so aggressively. He lined up at the 2022 Tour de France as the second youngest rider on the start line, by the tame his second shot at La Grande Boucle came around... he was still the third youngest. Kevin shares his thoughts about growing up in USA cycling's youth programme and spending time as a teenager living in the nation of his father - Belgium. Winning Liege-Bastogne-Liege as an U23 rider for Axel Merckx team and we look ahead to his future as he reveals his plans for the future with DSM-Firmenich. In this week's regular episode, we revisit last Sunday's Men's World Championship Road Race in the company of AG2r-Citroën ace Larry Warbasse, who was making his senior début in USA national team colours at the weekend. Despite Larry's vital work early in the race, US team leader Neilson Powless couldn't stop Mathieu van der Poel claiming the rainbow jersey - & we get Larry's thoughts on a scintillating race & controversial Glasgow course. There's also a brief & for Daniel excruciating discussion about the Van der Poel pitstop which made the tabloid headlines in Scotland on Monday. We hear, too, where the other medals have gone so far in Glasgow & look ahead to the men's TT. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Science in Sport. This week on Talking Luft we're taking one last look back at the 2023 TDF, where I took my History of the Tour de France quiz to the masses! Or better put, to a whole bunch of current pros and DS's that I managed to pull aside for a chat on the roadside of the Tour, to put them through their paces - including Caleb Ewan, Mat Hayman, Ian Stannard, Jai Hindley, Luke Durbridge, and Neilson Powless, among others. It required a bit of specialist TDF knowledge, and a bit of historical insight, plus a few just for fun, like whose legs would you want in this year's TDF, would you go full polka dot with the KOM jersey, which is the hardest of the Grand Tours, what does ASO stand for, and can you name the five winners of five or more Tours? I've gotta say, some of the efforts were a bit woeful, and a couple were a little bit controversial, but we had plenty of laughs and I hope you enjoy listening along! Cheers, Mitch
Phil Keoghan is host of TV's "Amazing Race," and he's also put together an incredible documentary about the 1928 Tour de France. The doc is called Le Ride, and Phil and his buddy Ben rode the 3,300+ mile course on bicycles from that time. They filmed their race, and are now sharing their story. Phil talks about the search to find the bikes, plotting and recreating the original course to the best of their ability, and why the 1928 race was so important to document. He talks about nutrition and training back then compared to what he & Ben did today, the conditions of the road now vs 1928, the gear, and the support team now vs then. He also recounts the mental and physical strain of riding 150 miles a day for 26 straight days. It's a fascinating, nearly unbelievable journey, and a must-listen!
Arrivée returns with our on-the-whistle review of the world championship men's road race in Glasgow - where the grumbles about the crit-like course were drowned out by a pulsating, heavy metal battle for the rainbow jersey. Much of the pre-race speculation focused on the latest instalment of Mathieu van der Poel and Wout Van Aert's age-old rivalry. Tadej Pogačar and Mads Pedersen were among the riders overshadow them and indeed defending champion Remco Evenpoel - and all of the aforementioned quintet would be in the thick of the action on Sunday. Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss who came out on top and why on a memorable afternoon in Scotland. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Science in Sport. Lance, JB, George, and Johan break down an impressive ride from Mathieu van der Poel to win a World Championships after the Dutch superstar stormed clear of and held off a firepower-laden front group of Mads Pedersen, Tadej Pogačar, and Wout van Aert, despite a late-race crash, on a slick and extremely technical city center course in Glasgow Scotland. The crew covers how Van der Poel was able to turn around his summer with this win after a quiet Tour de France, the state of the rivalry between Van der Poel and Van Aert, as well as how Remco Evenepoel was unable to defend his title, and Pogačar putting in a strong ride to grab third place after a tough Tour de France. Before signing off, they discuss how the climate protests, which paused the race for over an hour, and rainy weather, which caused Van der Poel to crash late in the race, could have drastically altered the outcome. Glasgow. They also discuss what Evenepoel's third career win at the prestigious one-day race in just three starts means for his looming showdown with the stacked GC start list for the Vuelta a España in late August, where the young superstar will face off against the world's best grand tour racer, two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard, and a plethora of other top three week races, like Primož Roglič, Geraint Thomas, Enric Mas, Juan Ayuso, and João Almeida.
