We can't think of a better way to start 2021 than with lucky episode #13 where we have the pleasure of speaking with John Shaw-Rimmington, founder of Dry Stone Walling Across Canada. John is an amazing waller and artist and truly believes in the power of teamwork. Guided by a philosophy that stones are the boss of any creation, John willingly shares his knowledge and is keen to learn from others. Enjoy!  

In today's world of fancy computer graphics, it's easy to get caught up in the idea that in order to be "good" at something, you need to spend thousands of dollars on computer software to get you there. It's easy to forget that all the actual thinking and creativity comes from you and not a computer! In our lively conversation with Sara Meier from Greenthumb Sam, Sara reminds us of the beauty that comes from simplicity. Although there is nothing "simple" about her gorgeously hand-rendered graphics or landscape designs, Sara shares with us her deep, internal connection to her work. It's easy to see the craftsmanship that goes into building with stone, but, if you are not looking for it, it's easy to miss the skill that goes into making stone accessible in the first place. The father and son team, Terry and Kyle Dutton of Rockport Cut Granite, have been working one of the oldest stone quarries in the Rockport, MA area for some time now. Using good old-fashioned methods for splitting stone, they procure some of the most beautiful granite in this area. Their passion for what they do and the knowledge they bring to our industry is truly inspirational.  

The Green Industry is demanding. We are subject to the stresses of weather, seasonal deadlines, and client demands. Throw in the physical aspect of what we do, and it's clear that our minds and bodies can be negatively impacted. Learning how to take time to treat our bodies well and give our minds a break is imperative to a long term career in this field. Truly, this is a lesson we have only learned (or at least implemented) within the last 5 years and it has been life changing. In our case, this came through the practice of yoga. Well, it seems like life got the best of us and we found ourselves overwhelmed with work (and lack of it), remote "learning," and adapting to the circumstances around us. It honestly did not leave much brain power to think about this podcast.But within that space, we decided to take advantage of what life was throwing at us and took a family trip that was really the adventure of a lifetime! In this podcast, we'll take you on that journey with us. Yup, we said it. When Neil broached the idea of having John Hourihan, owner of Vintage Builders and co-host of The Modern Craftsman podcast,  on Landscapes and Pancakes, "badass" is how he described him. And while there is certainly more to John than just a punchy attitude, he really caught our attention for his unabashed honesty in how he approaches his work, runs his builds, and his business philosophy. As a custom home builder with a keen attention to detail, we really wanted to explore how the business model of home construction is similiar to that of landscape construction and show the ways that each industry can learn from each other. John's take on the value of our industry, his insight into running a business, and his willingness to let Samantha vent a bit about builders, will leave you with your head spinning --it sure did for us (in a good way, of course).

The world seems like a crazy place right now. But not all is negative. There are great people doing amazing work in our communities. A few years ago, we had the absolute pleasure of meeting Paul Burton. Paul's dad, Ron Burton Sr,. founded the Ron Burton Training Village in Hubbarston, MA. Ron's vision was to create a place where kids could grow and learn to become outstanding people. Using sports as a medium to get there, the campers commit to a seven year journey that teaches them to overcome life's challenges and to value others before themselves.  This is a truly magical place, and part of that magic stems from Ron's initial commitment to creating beautiful spaces in the village. He often said that "beautiful spaces bring beautiful thoughts." This is a testament to the power of outdoor spaces and is a reminder that the Green Industry plays a pivotal role in creating harmonious communities. Take a listen! This is truly inspiring!   

"Builder, maker, dreamer. Not lazy." These may be the words that Thea Alvin uses to describe herself on her Instagram page (@theasunshine) but we'd like to add "innovative, humble, and superbly gracious." Thea is perhaps best known for her stone sculptures that defy gravity, but there is a whole world of work that she has created in her many years as an artist and stone mason. Her creativity seems endless and her connection to the landscape is intense. We hope that you will be as inspired as we are by hearing about Thea's journey and her philosophy about creativity.

Nothing good in life comes easy! And that's especially true when you own your business. It takes time and patience to build up something you can really stand behind.
