This episode is a part two of a two-part series focusing on the Moore Theatre shows in 1995 where the band performed under the pseudonym Piss Bottle Men. If you like to listen to things linearly, the first part of this series is available through our Patreon which you can sign up to for as low as $1 per month here: http://patreon.com/liveon4legs This episode is another addition in our year long Hometown Series dedicated to telling the stories of their best Seattle shows in their 30-year anniversary. These two shows were special fan club shows meant as a warm up before heading off to a big tour in Asia, Australia and New Zealand. With Vitalogy selling over 4 million copies in the prior months late in 1994 and early 1995, these shows were the first time that the hometown fans got familiar with new drummer Jack Irons and seen some of these newer Vitalogy songs fleshed out in the way they were played on the record. This was also in the middle of the Mirror Ball recording sessions, so a certain Uncle was in town available to make a visit to his favorite nephews. However, earlier in the night the band decided to present a preview of the new collaborative record as they played Act Of Love mid-set. When Neil makes his appearance to join them, we get a little bit of a reprise to close the night. This may remind you of another instance where this happened - the Polo Fields show where Neil filled in for Ed who had food poisoning. The band would play two versions of RITFW that night.
I learned about this Neil's musical taste through his son, Stuart, my episode 1 guest. When Neil found himself stranded in Austin over the last month, we had a chance to tape this episode where I got a much better understanding for some of the coolest 70s and 80s UK hits from Neil's youth. Bonus content at the end for more on great Scots and Neil's mobile disco. So Long - Fischer-Z Silver Machine - Hawkwind Delilah -The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
This podcast covers New Girl Season 1, Episode 24, See Ya, which originally aired on May 8, 2012 and was written by Elizabeth Merriweather and directed by Michael Spillar. Here’s a quick recap of the episode:Nick is moving out to live with Caroline, but he gets cold feet and drives to the desert instead and throws his keys into a canyon in a moment of nervousness. Jess and Cece drive out to help them but then Jess throws her keys to keep Nick from going back to Caroline. The gang spends a night together in the desert and work through good and tough parts of their friendship. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:While the group was stranded out in the desert, they played Nick’s Mixtape from when he was 14 (1996) and it included the below songs. Nick also played this Mixtape when he returned to the apartment."Breakfast at Tiffany's"- Deep Blue Somethings"How Bizarre" - OMC"mmm mmm mmm mmm" - Crash Test Dummies"You Shook Me All Night Long" - AC/DCAdditional Pop Culture References such as:When Neil is interviewing to live at the loft, the group mentions he replied to the Craigslist ad with a fax.Craigslist - Craigslist is an American classified advertisements website with sections devoted to jobs, housing, for sale, items wanted, services, community service, gigs, résumés, and discussion forums.Fax - A fax is the telephonic transmission of scanned printed material (both text and images), normally to a telephone number connected to a printer.Kindle - In the White Fang scene, Cece calls out that White Fang is the only book on his Kindle. The Kindle is an Amazon e-reader device where users can browse, buy, download, and read e-books, newspapers, magazines and other digital media.“I like to move in, move in” - When Neil is moving in he sings “I like to move in, move in” which is a play on the 1994 song “I Like to Move It” by Reel 2 Real which peaked at number 89 in the US and number 5 in the UK. It was also used in the Madagascar franchise with the lyrics slightly altered to match the plot of each film and was recorded by different artists.Pounding the drum of war/Eisenhower - When Schmidt is watching Cece’s shoot he asks if he’s supposed to want to buy a missile, that there was a pounding of the drum of war, and that no one listened to Eisenhower. While not explicitly using those words, this is a reference to Einsehower’s Chance for Peace speech after the death of Soviet dictator Stalin.Road Runner - Jess meep-meeps at a coyote because that’s how the cartoon character “Road Runner” would have handled the situation. The character makes only this sound recorded by Paul Julian which is actually a “beep, beep” and followed by a “popping-cork” tongue noise. This signature noise was inspired by an imitation of a car horn.Lastly in Pop Culture, we wanted to provide more info on White Fang! In the famous New Girl scene, Schmidt “white fangs” Cece, trying to let her go to “set her free” and be happy. This moment only happens in the movie as the wolf, White Fang, never leaves in the book but Schmidt puts his own spin on how to “white fang” Cece. White Fang (Novel by Jack London)White Fang (1991 Movie)Ending scene from White Fang movieWe also cover the White Fang scene as our “Schmidtism” this week. For “Not in 2020” on this episode we briefly discuss Jess continuing to act like she knows best for everyone. We also explore the careers of Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Thomas Lennon, and Matthew Stephen Smith, the guest stars of this episode. This episode got an 8/10 Rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Nick and Kelly rated this episode a 9/10 and her favorite character was Schmidt! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for our Season 1 Recap in 3 weeks!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

When Neil and I worked a 12-step program years ago, we both took on a serious commitment to “continue to take personal inventory, and when you’re wrong, promptly admit it.” This COMMITMENT has completely changed our relationship for the better. But it’s not always easy! And it certainly doesn’t come naturally for me. Today, we’re sharing a few stories from our own MARRIAGE of how we’ve applied this, exactly what it looks, feels, and sounds like, and how it can change all of your relationships for the better too. The rent is so high when you hold on to pride or resentment. While the payout is so huge when you learn to apologize to the people you love as QUICKLY as possible, and just let love conquer pride, even (and especially) when you’re not at fault. In this episode, you will hear: Saying “I was wrong” is often just as important as saying “I love you” in healing a relationship. A commitment to take responsibility for mistakes The great enemy of charity is pride. Pride is one of the biggest reasons marriages and families struggle. Especially when you are not at fault, let love conquer pride. Cleaning up your side of the street, figuring out where you did wrong in the situation Selfishness is one of the more common faces of pride. Don’t try to be perfect, try to be better. There is so much peace and happiness waiting on the other side of an apology. The central feature of pride is enmity toward God and enmity toward our fellow men. Satan's trick is to make us feel like we're getting something out of being resentful or being right or holding on to pride or anger. Supporting Resources: Talk by Dieter F. Continued... Hello Rushians! Episodes 9 and 10 of 2GTR we dedicate to the legacy of Neil Peart. We owe him this. When Neil finally retired from Rush in 2015, citing tendonitis and shoulder issues, he said “It does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to … take yourself out of the game,” he explained at the time. “I would rather set it aside than face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing It'” …Even so, we somehow knew we might never see him again. Yet not in this way. As dedicated fans, we mourn his loss. Collectively we feel for his close friends and family. It helps to talk about it. Have a listen with hosts Dan, John, and special guests/super fans/organizers Lance “The Shred” Kasten and Mike Rosenthal. Yup, we said it. When Neil broached the idea of having John Hourihan, owner of Vintage Builders and co-host of The Modern Craftsman podcast, on Landscapes and Pancakes, "badass" is how he described him. And while there is certainly more to John than just a punchy attitude, he really caught our attention for his unabashed honesty in how he approaches his work, runs his builds, and his business philosophy. As a custom home builder with a keen attention to detail, we really wanted to explore how the business model of home construction is similiar to that of landscape construction and show the ways that each industry can learn from each other. John's take on the value of our industry, his insight into running a business, and his willingness to let Samantha vent a bit about builders, will leave you with your head spinning --it sure did for us (in a good way, of course).
Well, not literally! What we mean by ‘steal from everyone’ is get ideas and learn from EVERYONE. (Emphasis on the word everyone!) In this episode of The Tutor Podcast, we learn about the importance of learning in and out of a classroom. Sometimes, when we set our goals and lay down our paths we’ll walk on, we refuse to see the benefits of having to explore other paths. The truth is, there are many things you can learn from other fields, from everyone. Don’t be a snub. Diversions are fine, as long as we gain recent knowledge. Neil also discusses on how you can strengthen your tutor-student relationships, so tune in! KEY TAKEAWAYS Learning doesn’t stop once you leave formal education. This should be the time you become intentional in looking for ways to widen your knowledge more and broaden your skill set. Since there’s a chance you’ll stagnate or even forget all you’ve studied about. You should also see this as an opportunity to explore things outside of your field. Take guitar lessons, for instance. When Neil teaches, he notes all his students’ opinions, feedback, or critiques. Some may feel offended. But learning is a two-way process—a tutor must not be threatened by such. Why dismiss an idea that can improve your (teacher-student) relationship and yourself too? There are things outside your field/industry that may also help you advance in your own career. For example, for guitar tutors, a little knowledge on kinesiology, human behaviour, or even storytelling can make an enormous difference. The dynamics inside the classroom will change. Always aim to be better than who you are today. Keep progressing. Make use of the resources and tools—podcasts, books, workshops, and so on. There will always be something new you’ll learn once you utilise those. Theories, ideas, views, etc. are also changing. You need to be updated. BEST MOMENTS “Nobody has a monopoly on knowledge.” “The wider my view is for my world, the more I can look around for useful knowledge and insights bring back to what I’m doing.” “We know what we know, but we don’t know what we don’t know.” “Basically, I just know my stuff. As far as I know, for my students, it makes me much more credible and more valuable in their eyes.” “I tell my students, ‘Everything you learn from me will ripple out to all aspects of your life.’” “Learn more, earn more!” VALUABLE RESOURCES Listen to The Tutor Podcast on iTunes (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-tutor-podcast/id1369191372)! When Neil and I first got married, working together as business partners was far from our envisioned happily ever after, but yet here we are working together full time on our small business from home every day. To know the best time to sell your home, there are several factors to consider. When is the best time to sell your home? This question was recently asked by a viewer of my video blog named Neil who benefited from my home selling advice earlier in 2019. Neil was preparing his home for the market, but he was flexible in terms of when to list it. When he sought my advice, I ran the numbers and figured out that the best time to put his property on the market was in February. Inventory would be low and I foresaw more competition hitting the market and prices dropping after February was over. When Neil did list his home, it generated multiple offers and he got a great deal. Afterward, prices declined, more homes hit the market, and inventory increased—just as I predicted. A lot of people would’ve assumed in this case that it would be better to wait until spring to list, but that wouldn’t have done anybody any good. February might not be the best time to put your home on the market, but if you list during the winter months, you know that buyers are serious. Nobody looks at properties in freezing weather just for decorating ideas. Before you decide what’s best, it’s important to know your type of home’s recent sale history—look at the days on market, the level of inventory, and the selling history of your neighborhood in general. If you look at the statistics at 4:21 in the video above, you’d be surprised at how many sales are spread throughout the year. “If you’re not ready to make a move and are overly attached to your home, buyers will know, and you’ll probably sabotage your sale.” Another factor to consider before deciding when to list is life changes. We real estate agents are agents of change, and we understand that life happens. People are born; people die. Marriages begin and end. Job situations change. When one of these life changes take place, that could be your best time to move. It’s important that you’re ready to change, as well. If you’re not ready to make a move and are overly attached to your home, buyers will know, and you’ll probably sabotage your sale. If you’re still in the early stages of planning your sale, please give me a call. I’ve seen many people overdevelop their homes and spend too much money preparing it for the market. Then, once they did list it, they had to chase down the market and ended up losing whatever investment they put into the home. If you schedule a consultation with me, I can advise you on what you should and shouldn’t do to prepare your home for the market. Additionally, we’ve just launched a new home selling program that removes a lot of the hassle of selling a home that we’d love to share with you. To learn all about it, visit guaranteedsales.ca. If you have any more questions about when to sell your home, feel free to reach out to me. I’d love to speak with you.

[00:38] When you do a Google search, you’ll see suggestions of ‘People also search for’ topics. [00:54] If you create an SEO schema on your website’s Frequently Asked Questions page, you’ll take up more real estate on the Google search results page and you will see an increase in click-throughs. [01:12] When Neil did it, his click-through rate doubled, which is the average increase people see with this trick. [01:53] Neil argues that you don’t want to manipulate Google results because that will hurt you in the long run. [02:00] Think long-term and think about what’s best for the user. Today I get to drop this wonderful conversation I had with Neil Crone. I don’t think I was prepared for how relaxed and fun it was going to be to speak with Neil. I always love when I meet someone for the first time and my first thought is, “this is going to be fun!” Neil is someone who has been through his fair share of “Schtuff” but has not let his challenges darken the lens with which he views the world. Instead, he is someone who uses his experiences as a way to reach out and connect with others to shine a light on what bonds us to together as humans and propel us forward into the very things that paralyze us. Neil does this with his writing, improv, acting and motivational speaking, but I have a feeling, after speaking with Neil, it is just how he shows up in the world. Some of the things we cover in this episode are, What his biggest challenge as an artist has been, as someone who studied and performed in improv what is the most valuable takeaway he has brought with him into other areas of his life and what major change he would like to see happen in the entertainment industry. A little about Neil: Neil is an actor and writer who lives in a town so small everybody knows where everyone else’s birthmarks are. He has performed in dozens of television and radio commercials, TV shows and is the voice of numerous cartoon characters every Saturday morning, including ‘The Ridonculous Race’, ‘Ella’ and the upcoming ‘Kody Kapow!’ His most current television and feature film roles include a guest starring appearance in ‘Rogue’, ‘Murdoch Mysteries’, ‘Remedy’, ‘The Strain’, ‘One Starry Christmas’ , and the soon to be released, ‘Bon Cop Bad Cop 2’ and Stephen Kings ‘It’. He also enjoyed six seasons playing the role of Radio Redneck Fred Tupper in CBC’s hit sit-com ‘Little Mosque on the Prairie’ and two seasons of Family Channel’s ‘Really Me’. A Second City Mainstage alumnus, Neil has been performing improvised and sketch comedy for over twenty years and is the recipient of a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Radio Comedy for his work as ‘Bad Santa’ on Q107’s Derringer in the Morning. When not performing, Neil is busy writing; as an award-winning weekly humour columnist for Metroland papers, and a contributor to numerous publications including Zoomer Magazine, Ontario Out of Doors, Dogs in Canada and ACTRA Magazine. His books; ‘Semi-Colon; A Writers cheeky journey through Colo-rectal Cancer’, “Who Farted?’ – Stories in Verse for big and little kids” and “The Farmers Secret Midnight Dance” and his first collection of syndicated columns “Enter Laughing – The Early Years” are currently available at major bookstores. Neil is a cancer survivor and is a National Spokesperson for both the Colo-rectal Cancer Association of Canada and Colon Cancer Canada. He is available as a motivational speaker, focusing on the power of laughter in healing. When Neil grows up he wants to be an Astronaut. https://www.thisischelseajohnson.com/

[00:08:17] Whether PR people still under-prioritise the broadcast media. [00:12:38] How one of Neil's clients wanted him to get a urinal story on the Today programme. [00:13:08] Why do PR people not tell clients who have ridiculous requests to piss off?[00:16:59] Why it was Neil's time at Red that made him into a PR guy. [00:29:49] Why working in-house means that you basically have a variety of clients in the form of internal stakeholders. [00:32:46] How has it been for Neil moving his family to Switzerland? [00:34:09] How German and Swiss journalists allow PR people to make changes to the copy. [00:35:50] How as a Brit working in Switzerland it's embarrassing for Neil to talk about how badly Brexit is going to his German and Swiss friends. [00:39:04] Why Neil believes that even if there were a second referendum and the UK stayed in Europe, to a large extend the damage has been done. [00:40:37] When Neil is buying PR - what does he look for? [00:42:28] How sometimes you could put pitch documents together in a row on a table from seven agencies who pitched and if you took the names away you probably couldn't tell the difference between between some of the ideas. [00:43:23] Why Neil believes PR people even now have an obsession with print. [00:44:18] Why Neil believes agencies are still missing a trick with radio. [00:45:40] Why Neil believes PR in London is in such a good place. [00:46:58] Why Neil thinks some of the big PR shops are still overpriced: He says "Some of the bills I get are eye-watering for what what we get." [00:50:13] Whether the PR sector is more susceptible to mental health issues than some other sectors. [00:52:03] Why PR businesses don't say no enough. [00:52:08] Why PR firms don't challenge nasty clients enough.

Eliza takes Candy as porter into town on a shopping excursion with Neil to buy a new ballroom dress. When Neil and Eliza leave her behind, she encounters Archibald's brother, Alistear Cornwell, on her walk back to the Leagan house. Alistear offers her a lift in his car. However, neither his driving, nor the car are in the best shape. Alistear suggests a shortcut through the forest, both hopping from tree to tree. Back home, much earlier than Neil and Eliza expected, Candy learns that the old Ardley matron will take her residence in the Ardley estate and there will be a ball to welcome her. Both Alistear and Archibald send an official invitation for her to Mr. Leagan. Despite Eliza's protests, Mr. Leagan will not ignore two personal invitations and orders Eliza to gift a dress to Candy. Eliza gives one that is much too small to fit. Dorothy soothes Candy's mind by reminding her that Candy's conduct will be of far greater importance at the party than an expensive dress out of Eliza's closet.
When Klint gets into a fight with the cat Sylvia and Mrs. Leagan discovers Candy doing voluntarily chores, she reminds Candy that she is to be Eliza's playmate and banishes Klint. Candy cannot bear to leave him in the forest and hides him in the barn. When Neil and Eliza witness Klint following Candy out of the stables, they pester her to the brink of tears by taking away her prince's pendant, threatening to tell their mother about Klint. After taking back the pendant, Candy runs off, her course set for Pony's Home—if not for seeing her prince appearing at some grand rose gates with the same crest as her pendant: that of the Ardley family. Once again, he disappears seemingly into thin air once she's laughing and smiling again, paying her the same compliment as before. Instead of going to Pony's Home, Candy skips happily singing back into the Leagan home.
When Neil and Jessie's difficult call with Daniel is interrupted, it turns out someone else was listening in.

On this edition of Brandstorm, Dan Trzinski and Nancy Christopher talk about how to set up the charitable arm of a corporation with Neil Willenson, VP of Community Relations and co-founder of Hometown Heroes and Camp Reunite for Kapco Metal Stamping. About Neil WillensonWhile Neil studied Film and did some acting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it was his work as a camp counselor at Camp Minikani and in the Poconos, where he would find his calling. Tucking kids into bed that summer after graduating, he would read the biography of Ryan White, a teenage hemophiliac infected with AIDS through blood transfusions. White would become the poster child for AIDS education and advocacy. Neil wanted the young campers to know that you can't catch AIDS from touching, hugging or kissing others with the disease. When he returned home, however, he read an article about an AIDS scare in his community. He called the mother featured in the article and found out that Dawn Wolfe had been infected by her husband. One of her kids was HIV positive; the other HIV negative. Neil knew he needed to do something about the AIDS scare, so he created Camp Heartland, a safe haven for kids with AIDS and HIV. That one week of camp turned into a 20-year career as executive director . When Neil met Jim Kacmarcik, the CEO of Kapco Metal Stamping, Jim was a generous contributor to Camp Heartland. Jim asked Neil to be the keynote speaker at the Kapco Charitable Challenge, an event that tested college students to pay it forward. Each group of students were given $1,000 to leverage and help people they did not know. Two of the groups picked the same family to help build an accessible home. Eleven years prior, the single mom had given birth to quadruplets. One child died at birth; two of the kids had cerebral palsy (CP). By age 11, the kids with CP had developed spiral muscular atrophy and just weeks later, the mother was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Neil called the casting director from ABC’s "Extreme Home Makeover" to get the cast and crew to build a wheelchair-accessible home for the family. Having done a similar story already, the reality show turned down Neil's request, so he went Jim Kacmarcik for help. Kacmarcik not only agreed, but rallied 1,000 volunteers to help build the home, which was documented in a one-hour special on NBC's "Dateline." Willenson and Kacmarcik became collaborators and friends. When Jim called Neil next, he wanted Neil to hook him up with a celebrity because he wanted to start a record label. During the meeting, Jim said he also want to buy a baseball team, do more philanthropy, and needed someone to help him. After 20 years of asking for money and seeing more than 100 children who came through Camp Heartland die, Neil was ready for a change. Four months later, Neil started at Kapco as the vice president of community relations. About Kapco Metal StampingFounded in 1972, Kapco is based in Grafton, Wis., and manufactures metal components for customers needing stamping, fabrication and welding. The company also owns the Lakeshore Chinooks, part of a collegiate summer baseball league, K-Nation Entertainment, Given Music Publishing in Nashville, and SpeedKore, an automotive company that outfits muscle cars with carbon fiber (as seen in the "Fast and Furious" series and "Jay Leno's Garage"). Most recently, the company has launched its Inspire America Speakers Bureau. Kapco's Philanthropic InitiativesThe focus of Kapco's philanthropic efforts is kids and families in need. Philanthropy is not a business strategy at Kapco, so the company does not require corporate logos to be included in any organization’s collateral. However, Kapco also has hybrid initiatives with its marketing department that do require corporate identity. Some examples include its annual Toy Drive and the Milwaukee Bucks Home Court Heroes program, which honors an individual or individuals who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to our community. Kapco has vetted more than 200 charities, meeting with board members and going through each organizations’ financials. While the company does write checks to charities, Neil and Jim prefer to partner with organizations, like Operation Dream, a group of African American males who mentor kids who don’t have fathers. Jim and Neil alternate making decisions about charitable giving, but employees can also have a say, and Neil has never turned down an employee who is dedicated to a cause. Also, every year, Kapco holds an employee raffle and the winner can choose from 30 to 40 vetted charities to give a donation. Jim and Neil are also co-founders of two charitable organizations: Camp Hometown Heroes for kids who have lost a parent serving our country; and Camp Reunite, which reunites imprisoned mothers at Taycheedah with their children for five hours at a time to learn about coping skills and violence prevention. Neil says a side benefit of Kapco's philanthropy is that, in some cases, attracts employees, who view Kapco as having a great culture. This is especially true for senior-level executives. Some of Kapco’s customers are also deeply involved in Kapco's charitable giving programs. Advice for Other CompaniesWith so many great charities at the local and national levels, Neil says companies need to hone in on what they want to support. Corporate leadership should set priorities and include volunteerism wherever possible. Companies should also consider anything that can mean a win for the business and involve employees. Neil cites two organizations that have excellent charitable giving programs. "Kohl's for Kids" not only allows groups of five or more of its employees to provide community service, but also pays the charitable organization $100 for each Kohl’s employee who serves. Direct Supply gives its employees 8 hours each year with pay to help a charity in need. Time-Stamped Show Notes: [00:27] Today’s Topic: The Ultimate Advice for Every 20 Year Old [00:33] At 20, Eric was unsure of his future. [00:59] You have to roll with the punches, stay the course, and be patient. [01:05] When Eric went to Japan, he met a number of business owners, including one who focused solely on marketing within Pachenko games. [01:30] 20-25 years into the business, he now has 20 offices around the world, a publicly traded marketing agency, and $200,000,000 in business. [01:58] The key is to be open-minded and to constantly be learning from others. [02:20] Stay with a project: good things will happen if you put in the work. [02:45] When Neil started out, he attempted to do too many things at once, instead of focusing on one project. If he had focused, he would probably be more financially successful. [03:12] As you are creating your business, your game plan is probably going to change, as will the industry in which you are investing. [03:55] In most cases, the business you start will most likely not be the business you end up with. [04:43] Warren Buffett didn’t get to where he is right away. He reached success at the middle point of his career. [05:03] Gary Vee started out helping his dad with a wine store, moved it online, began marketing it online, then eventually his career path became about marketing. He grew and adapted. [05:34] Things don’t blow up overnight: it takes hard work and persistence. [06:18] When Jeff Bezos started Amazon, they had little to no profit margin; today, it is a major corporation that brings in tons of revenue. [06:50] He’s a good example of a guy who stuck to his guns. [07:05] Once you focus on one thing, don’t be afraid to disrupt things. [07:18] Neil’s version of disruption is that he is creating software, but he wants to make it free and accessible to all; he believes software should be free. [07:50] Check out all the tools at NeilPatel.com or Quicksprout.com. [07:54] They just launched A/B testing and WYSIWYG, where any website can be CMS. [08:15] Ultimately, the message is to be patient, focus on one project, and stay the course. [09:00] Eric has other businesses, but they cost him time and money. If he could go back, he would only focus on the agency. [09:35] He thinks the agency would be five times as successful if he had focused solely on that. [09:44] That’s it for today! On episode #504, Eric and Neil discuss the four fundamental things you need to master in marketing. Tune in to hear what these four elements are and how they can massively improve your business. Time-Stamped Show Notes: [00:27] Today's Topic: 4 Fundamental Things You Need to Master in Marketing [00:34] Element #1: Consistency when it comes to running tests. [01:10] Neil finds that what works in marketing today, won't necessarily work tomorrow. By running tests, you figure out what is working and what is not. [01:35] For instance, Neil decided to use Google Authentication as a method of signing up for his email list, which produced better results than asking for names and addresses. [02:05] Element #2: Having a growth mindset. Looking at your peers, assessing new options, and not being closed-off. [02:46] Element #3: Be data driven. Numbers are all that matter! [03:21] When Neil spoke with his team recently, they listed changes they wanted to make, but the changes weren't based on data. [04:00] Element #4: Think about the process. [04:05] Google the “Toyota Production System”, which is the method by which they make their cars. [04:15] Even Eric and Neil have a process for their podcast. When you systamize things, they become easier to achieve. [05:00] That's it for today! [05:02] Eric and Neil recommend the Problem Solvers podcast, because there is a great episode about the Hello Fresh CEO. To listen go to singlegrain.com/solve. When Neil was 2 years old his father took him to a flying event called the Cleveland Air Races. This could have been the beginning of Neil’s love for flying.
Neil (Michael Johnston) is an introverted, questioning high school freshman. Lacking any friends IRL, his main social outlet is the steamy fan fiction he writes about Vanguard, the brawny, galaxy-hopping hero of a popular sci-fi franchise. When his stories are exposed in class Neil is mortified, but the slightly older, effortlessly cool Julia (Hannah Marks) comes to his defense. An erotic fan fic writer herself, Julia pushes Neil to publish his stories to an online “adult” forum, where they quickly grab the attention of the site moderator, Denis (Michael Ian Black). When Neil is invited to present his work at a comic con live-read event, he has to face the fact that Denis’ interest in him may be more than simply professional… perhaps like his own feelings for Julia. Director Clay Liford stops by to talk about his endearing, beautifully rendered story of angst, creativity and self discovery. For news and updates go to: slashthemovie.comSlash /
Neil Worley's of Worley's Cider makes cider in the area of Great Britain called Somerset. Climb the high hill at the farm and your can see the Bristol Channel. It is a remote location by UK standards and the soil at the farm is only 3 inches in depth before you hit limestone. Instead of growing apples at the farm, the apples are brought up the hill. When Neil traveled to Portland Oregon in February 2016 to speak at the United States Association of Cider Makers annual event called CiderCon, I caught up with him to chat about a very specific cider making technique called "keeving". What is Keeving? It is a process, whereby the nutrients of the sweet cider (before fermentation) are removed from the juice. During this process the nutrients float to the top of the juice forming a brown cap that Neil says looks like a "brown omelette". The brown cap is punctured and the juice is rack over into a new container to then be fermented into cider. As there are no nutrients in the juice that was keeved, the yeast will not digest all the sugars in the juice thus leaving a refreshing cider that has a dry yet slightly sweet flavor profile. Worley's Cider has won numerous awards and Neil is highly regarded for his cider making. The full transcript of this chat with Neil including all the details he shared on keeving is available for patrons of Cider Chat. Go to Cider Chat Patreon Page and find our how you can receive your copy of this informative chat with Neil discussing the technical aspect and tricks of keeving. "It's almost Valentine's Day," said Mrs. Connor."Today we will make cards."All the children at Robin Hill School loved Valentines's Day.All the children except Neil."Valentines are frilly! Valentines are pink!" he said."I get too many valentines. I do not want any more.""Are you sure?" asked Mrs. Connor."Yes, I am sure," said Neil."Very, very sure."And that was that.On Valentine's Day, Katie gave Emma a frilly valentine.James gave Hannah a pink valentine. But nobody gave a valentine to Neil.Mrs. Connor asked him, "Is it all right that you did not get any valentines?""Yes," said Neil. "It is great."But inside, Neil did not feel great at all.On the playground all the children looked at their valentines.Neil looked at the swings. In the halls all the children read their valentines.Neil read a book.On the school bus all the children talked about their valentines.Neil talked about his soccer team. But nobody listened. When Neil got home his sister said, "Neil, this card came for you."Neil opened the envelope.Inside was a valentine. It was not frilly. It was not pink.Every first grader in Neil's class signed the card. The next day Mrs. Connor asked, "Did you get too many valentines, Neil?""No," said Neil."I did not get too many valentines. I got just one valentine. And I feel great."This time, he did.
Neil Brown of Brown Advertising (http://www.brownadvertising.com/) in Winston-Salem North Carolina recently faced a bit of a business crisis. His biggest client restructured and disappeared. One month later I called to see how things were going. To my delight (and a bit of surprise), Neil said, “Business has been really good.” When I asked him what he was doing, he said one word: Networking. That's when I asked if he would share his story in a podcast interview and here it is. The short version: When Neil started noticing the instability and personnel changes happening with his biggest client, he started to prepare by joining one of the Marketing Mentor Marketing Groups (next ones start next week!) and getting his marketing machine in gear. Soon after, his suspicions came true and the client terminated their contract. Despite this, Neil says, “Because of the marketing, I haven't really missed the client.” In this interview on the Marketing Mentor Podcast, Neil shares what's making up his marketing machine, and how it's working. One big component is local networking, to which Neil used to have an aversion. He says that since he's a bit of an introvert, he always found it intimidating. But once he got involved, he now says, “I actually love networking” because it's “simply talking with other likeminded business people.” Listen in to find out which networking groups he's involved in, who he's meeting, and the response he's getting from this—and his other—marketing efforts. Has this ever happened to you? What have you done to prepare? Or what did you do when you were caught off guard?
