Racism naturalizes oppression of black people in all areas of their lives, including in their spirituality and faith. Since colonial times, we have observed systematic violence against people of Afro-Brazilian religions, such as Umbanda and Candomblé. Furthermore, black sacred entities of African-based religions are very central figures in the narratives of racist religious intolerance. Have you ever wondered why it's always the same black spirit entities that are manifesting and being cast out in services in the name of Jesus—a white Jesus with blue eyes?
