This week I'm talking to Matt Mckay about his book 'Lessons from the Afterlife'. • Offers a step-by-step process to unleash the unconscious and intuitive wisdom held in the awareness of your soul: Deep Knowledge Meditation • Includes guided journal prompts to help you listen to your heart and shine a light on your own deepest wisdom and soul knowledge • Shares channeled lessons from the author's late son Jordan on the mysteries of human existence, including what the divine or god is, the nature of a soul, the nature of matter and energy, the role of love in our lives, and the origin of the universe Human life is surrounded by mystery. At the center of this mystery are the questions: Why are we here? Is there a purpose to our existence, a reason why we're experiencing the beauty and pain of physical life? There is also the mystery of the universe itself. What is it and where did it come from? Religious and spiritual traditions have created complex cosmologies to answer these questions, but each tradition has a different answer, and we are left with profound uncertainty about deeper reality. As psychologist Matthew McKay reveals, we can each discover our own answers to these questions, our own inner truth, by connecting with the wisdom of our souls. In this guided workbook, McKay offers a step-by-step process to unleash the unconscious and intuitive wisdom held in the awareness of your soul. He explains how to use Deep Knowledge Meditation to access all of your soul's accumulated knowledge, everything you have learned across all of your incarnations. Channeling his late son, Jordan, a discarnate soul who has lived hundreds of lives, McKay shares Jordan's lessons on the mysteries of human existence, including what the Divine or God is, the nature of a soul, the nature of matter and energy, the role of love in our lives, and the origin of the universe. Accompanying these channeled teachings are journal prompts to be used with Deep Knowledge Meditation to help you listen to your heart and shine a light on your own deepest wisdom and soul knowledge. Guiding you on a journey of self-discovery, this book offers the opportunity to find your soul's truth about your life's purpose and the nature of physical reality. Bio Matthew McKay, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, professor of psychology at the Wright Institute, co-founder of Haight Ashbury Psychological Services, founder of the Berkeley CBT Clinic, and co-founder of the Bay Area Trauma Recovery Clinic, which serves low-income clients. He has authored and co-authored more than 40 books, including Seeking Jordan: How I Learned the Truth about Death and the Invisible Universe, The Luminous Landscape of the Afterlife: Jordan's Message to the Living on What to Expect After Death, Love in the Time of Impermanence, and Lessons from the Afterlife: A Deep Knowledge Meditation Guidebook. His website is seekingjordan.com. After Matthew's son died, he learned how to communicate with him in the afterlife. He shares messages he has channeled from his son, Jordan, and provides simple steps to communicate with loved ones to ease grief and experience love that continues without interruption after death. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CFM73YPJ https://seekingjordan.com/ https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlifeMy book 'Verified Near Death Experiences' https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Before the murders. Before the backyard graves. Before the "zombie" labels and the doomsday beliefs — there was a conference room in Utah and a man who told Lori Vallow she was chosen. This is Part 1 of "The Chosen Ones," a 5-part Hidden Killers series examining the psychology of spiritual abuse through the Vallow-Daybell case. We're not recapping the crime. We're dissecting the religious manipulation that made it possible. If you've ever experienced religious trauma, you know how this starts. The warmth of being "seen." The intoxication of being chosen. The slow process of believing you're exempt from the rules that govern everyone else.Chad Daybell told Lori they were married in a past life. He told her she was exalted. He told her that her husband Charles had been taken over by a demon.Within months, Charles was dead. Within a year, so were Tylee and JJ.This episode breaks down spiritual love bombing — the first stage of coercive control in high control religions. It's the same pattern used in toxic churches, manipulative faith communities, and cults worldwide. Understanding how it works is the first step in healing from religious trauma. For anyone in a faith crisis. Anyone questioning a toxic church. Anyone who has watched a loved one transform under spiritual influence. The devout aren't vulnerable because they're foolish. They're vulnerable because they've already decided to believe. How do you recognize spiritual abuse before it's too late?It starts with feeling chosen. Someone tells you that you're special — that they can see your divine purpose, that you were set apart before birth, that the rules don't apply to someone at your level. That's how it started for Lori Vallow. A religious conference. A man named Chad Daybell. A claim that they'd been married in a past life.Within a year, her husband was dead. Within fourteen months, her children were buried in Chad Daybell's backyard. This is Part 1 of "The Chosen Ones" — a 5-part psychological deep dive into spiritual abuse, religious trauma, and high control religion through the lens of the Vallow-Daybell case. This episode examines: → How spiritual love bombing creates dependency → Why seekers and the devout are most vulnerable to religious manipulation → The fringe LDS conference circuit where Chad Daybell built his following → How "you're special" becomes "the rules don't apply to you" → Warning signs of coercive control in religious settingsIf you're experiencing a faith crisis, questioning a toxic church, or in the middle of deconstruction — you'll recognize these patterns. The tactics are the same across high control religions. Only the vocabulary changes. The first step in spiritual manipulation is making you feel chosen. The second step is making you feel exempt. Understanding these mechanics is the first step toward healing from religious trauma.CHAPTERS: 0:00 - The Conference Room [Additional chapters TBD]RESOURCES FOR SURVIVORS: Religious Trauma Institute Recovering from Religion Tears of Eden (spiritual abuse support) Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? CHRISTINA Hello, everyone, I'm Christina Darnell, the managing editor of MinistryWatch, and today we're inaugurating a new feature here on the MinistryWatch podcast. Here's Warren Smith, the President of MinistryWatch, to explain. WARREN That's right, Christina. For the past couple of years, I've been writing a column called “Signs and Wonders.” “Signs and Wonders” is a column that shares thoughts on news items that either do not rise to the level of a news story for MinistryWatch or are slightly (even significantly) outside of our normal charity and philanthropy “beat.” My goal with the column was to be punchy, opinionated, and not to worry much about being slightly off brand. CHRISTINA And that approach has worked. Your “Signs and Wonders” column is often among our top ten stories of the week. WARREN So, after talking with you about that, we decided to do this audio version of the column. We won't be posting this on the website. After all, the “Signs and Wonders” column itself is already there, but we will be dropping this into the podcast feed each week, and we hope you enjoy it. CHRISTINA So what's up first? WARREN This week, the National Religious Broadcasters became the Pro-War Religious Broadcasters. It is not clear to me why the National Religious Broadcasters felt a need to issue a statement in support of Trump’s War this morning, but it did. I will not reprint it here. You can find it online if you are so inclined. CHRISTINA But it appears that the NRB might have outkicked its coverage, as they say in football. WARREN That's right. The Associated Press reports this week that even among the president's hardcore media supporters there is division. It will be interesting to see of MAGA media faithful remain…well…faithful. As up Wednesday, the American death toll is up to six people. The total death toll has topped 800. CHRISTINA We don't cover a lot of international news here at MinistryWatch, but you wanted to highlight the worsening situation in Nigeria. WARREN The situation in Nigeria is not getting as much attention in the U.S. as it deserves. Islamic radicals are trying to impose Sharia law to a large swath of the country, and local residents are resisting. What is happening in Nigeria could erupt into a larger conflict. CHRISTINA Nigeria has more than 230 million people, with Christians making up 40% of the population. WARREN If what is happening in Nigeria explodes into a full-blown religious war, the consequences could be devastating. More than a dozen Christian ministries, including Cru, Samaritan's Purse, Compassion International, World Vision, and SIM International have a presence in the country. CHRISTINA Closer to home, you've turned your attention to Christian romance novels. WARREN I was interested in and mildly frustrated by an article in Christianity Today about Christian romance writer Jeannette Oke. The 91-year-old author has sold more than 30 million copies of her soapy, sentimental books. CHRISTINA Several of them have been turned into Hallmark movies. WARREN I was interested because the story was well-written and fact filled. I was frustrated because the story failed to note that the romance genre has killed serious fiction in this country. Some reports say romance novels account for 30 percent of adult fiction sales. Maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety, but — in my view — “Christian Romance Novel” is an oxymoron. The sentimentality of a “romance novel” are in active war against the realism of true Christian fiction. Can you imagine a Christian publisher today bringing out Flannery O'Connor or Wendell Berry or Walker Percy? CHRISTINA Warren, let's pivot and talk about a controversy involving the beloved Minneapolis preacher and ministry leader John Piper. WARREN He stirred social media last week by tweeting a Bible verse. That Bible verse is Leviticus 19:34. “You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” CHRISTINA But what seemed to generate the controversy was a one line comment he added. WARREN He then added this comment: “Christians know the miserable bondage we were all in.” CHRISTINA The post has (so far) gotten 1.9 million views and about 2000 comments. So why do you think the tweet got so much attention? WARREN The tweet is controversial because our current immigration policy is polarizing. Some of Piper's critics have included Calvary Chapel Chino Hills pastor Jack Hibbs and James Lasher of Charisma Magazine. One of my more perceptive readers, Salvatore Luiso, emailed me that it was “sadly ironic” that Piper is being criticized for taking a Bible verse out of context by people in the charismatic movement who engage in “absurd interpretations of Bible verses taken out of context.” He has a point. CHRISTINA Speaking of the charismatic movement, Paula White-Cain is at it again. WARREN At a conference in Florida called the Unleashed Conference, covered by Christian Leader, she urged attendees last week to give a “sacrificial seed…out of obedience to God, and she tied their giving to spiritual breakthroughs.” CHRISTINA The 2026 Unleashed Conference took place in late February, and featured speakers including former Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Anglican priest Calvin Robinson. WARREN In other words, people who should have known better than to associate with Paula White-Cain, who was investigated by Sen. Charles Grassley a dozen years ago. CHRISTINA Can you give us a taste of what she said? WARREN Yes, here is a taste of White's message: “How many of you want to be a blessing?” she asked. “Because I'm telling you, there's an anointing of release right now. I want $100,000 to come in. I want $100,000. There are ten people that could give $10,000. There's a hundred people that could give $1,000. Get a check, make it payable to Paula White Ministries,” said White-Cain. “If you say, ‘I don't have it,' give a $100. Bring up a sacrificial seed.” To which I can only add: Stay as far away as possible from this charlatan's theology. CHRISTINA Warren, I've noticed in your social media feeds you often remember fallen military heroes. And this week you are remembering John Chapman. Who was he? WARREN John Chapman died in combat on this date in 2002. He was the first Airman awarded the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. If you don't know about him, check out this article. I highly recommend taking some time with it. It is the powerful story of a true American hero. And, I might add, the battle which cost him his life and for which he got the Medal of Honor, was captured on video by a drone that was flying over the battle to provide support. The video can be found on social media and it is done tastefully. It's not graphic. And I recommend finding it and getting a more immersive understanding of this hero's story. I should add that Chapman was a husband, father, and a committed Christian as well. CHRISTINA Any closing thoughts? WARREN I have some travel coming up in the next couple of months, and I would love to see you. I will be in Los Angeles in April and Dallas in May. I will be doing reader lunches in both cities. Let me know if you would like to join us. My email is wsmith@ministrywatch.com. CHRISTINA The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm Christina Darnell, with my co-host Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.

Station of Judgement What happens when truth threatens your expectations? And what do we do when the Jesus in front of us doesn't match the Jesus we prefer? In Week Three of The Stations of the Cross, we step into the Station of Judgment. From the council at daybreak to Pilate's courtroom and the shouting crowd, we watch motivated reasoning unfold in real time. The verdict is chosen before the evidence is heard. Religious leaders defend power. Pilate protects position. The crowd demands a Messiah who matches their anger. Barabbas, the guilty son of the father, walks free. Jesus, the true Son of the Father, stands condemned. This message explores how we do the same—politically, relationally, spiritually—when identity feels threatened and control feels challenged. They didn't crucify Jesus because they lacked evidence. They crucified Him because the evidence threatened their expectations. Luke 22:66-71, Luke 23:13-25 Discussion topics HEAD – What did Jesus say to you through the Word? In Luke 22:66–71, what do you notice about the way the Sanhedrin questions Jesus? What does their response reveal about their posture toward truth? How would you define “motivated reasoning” in your own words? Where do you see it clearly in this passage? What is the difference between condemnation and righteous discernment according to Scripture (Matthew 7:1–5, John 7:24)? HEART – How did it make you feel? Where in your life are you most tempted to practice motivated reasoning — politically, relationally, spiritually? Is there an area where you've been listening to confirm instead of listening to understand? HANDS – What are you going to do with it? Is there a relationship where you need to revisit assumptions you've made about someone's motives?  How can you practice righteous discernment without slipping into condemnation? What is one step you can take to align your expectations of Jesus with who He actually reveals Himself to be? This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. In our next look at the game mechanics for Civilization V we examine a new feature in Civilization 5, City-States. These are independent cities controlled by the computer that are also players to some degree in the game, and you can interact with them. And they are key to winning a Diplomatic Victory. Playing Civilization V, Part 9 - City States This was a newly introduced feature in Civ 5, and they play an important role in the game. They represent the small countries that are not running the world. They do not produce Settlers, so they do not expand beyond the one city, though that city can, and will expand its borders in a similar way to how your cities can grow. They do not start with a military unit, but they can produce military units and defend themselves. They can also build buildings in the city, but not Wonders. They do have a single vote each in the World Congress (or later the United Nations), making them a key to a Diplomatic victory. City States start out neutral with regards to the players, but your interactions with them can affect how they feel about you. For example, if you send units through their territory they will get hostile, but if you give them gifts they will get friendly. And if you wish you can go to war with them and take them over. This will affect your diplomatic relations with other players and other city states, but if you have decided on a war of conquest as your victory type, that won't matter to you, right? As mentioned, if you want to go for a Diplomatic victory you want to be allied with as many of them as possible to get their votes in the World Congress or the United Nations. But even if you don't need their votes, there are other benefits from friendly relations. There are two levels to friendly relations: Friendly, and Allied, and the benefits get better as the relations improve. City State Types With the expansions there are 5 types of City State: Militaristic, Maritime, Cultured, Mercantile, and Religious. The benefits you get are: Militaristic – If you are friends the city state will periodically gift you a unit, which will appear in your city which is closest to the city state. If you are allies the units will show up more often. Maritime – If you are friends they will add two food to your Capital city. If you are allies they will add one more food to every city you have. Cultured city states share their culture with you, at one rate if you are friends and at double the rate if you are allies. Mercantile city states give you an added 3 Happiness when you are friends. If you are allies you keep the added happiness, but in addition get access to a luxury resource that cannot be obtained any other way, and that also adds Happiness. Religious city states give you a one-time bonus of Faith when you first meet them, then provide added Faith per turn. Note that Cultured and Religious city states increase the amount of Culture or Faith they provide with each new era, so the earlier you develop your relations with them the better the benefit. Managing Relations With City States There is a mechanism in the game which keeps track of points to define your relations with city states. On this numerical scale, Neutral has a value of 0, Friendly 30 or above, and Allied 60 or above. In the other direction, once you go into negative numbers they become Angry, if if you go negative enough it becomes War. A city state can only ever have one ally. If only one player has more than 60 influence points, that player will become the patron of the city state and they will ally to that player. If two or more players have more than 60 influence points, the player with the most points gets the ally. As the game goes on, you may get a message that a city state you had as an ally has suddenly allied to someone else. This is the result of the other player gaining influence points in some way, often by gifts. You can also gain influence points by promising to protect a city state, but do this with your eyes open. If you do not follow through on your promise it will enrage the city state and you will lose a lot of influence with them. Your influence with a city state has a natural resting point at 0, or Neutral. That means that barring other factors, a positive number will fall over time, and a negative number will rise over time. So if you sent one of your units through their territory they will be angry for a period, but if nothing else happens they will return to Neutral. But on the other side, you don't stay allied with them forever unless you find ways to keep adding influence points. One way is to eliminate barbarian camps near to the city state. In fact, this is one exception to the rule about sending units through their territory. If you are doing it to attack the barbarians, you are seen as a protector, not an invader, and there is no penalty. Another way to gain influence is by completing a quest from a city state. Each city state you are in contact with will periodically give you a quest, and if you fulfill it you will gain influence points. This can include killing a barbarian camp or killing nearby barbarian units (though you can do that at any time, you don't need a quest). Some others include acquiring a Great Person of a certain kind, building a certain World Wonder, bullying another city state, finding a Natural Wonder, and so on. You do not need to fulfill a quest. For example, if your strategy calls for allying with other city states, you might want to pass on bullying another city state. There is no penalty for not fulfilling a quest, just a bonus when you do fulfill one. Another way to gain influence is with gifts. The most effective is Gold, and one large sum is more effective than several small ones. For a Diplomatic victory strategy, you should plan on having a large Treasury as you approach the end game so that you can buy allies in time for the crucial vote. You can also gain a small amount of influence points by gifting units. I make it a practice to do this whenever I have units that I don't want any longer. These could be obsolete units that have no upgrade path, for instance. I don't want to pay maintenance on them as that is a drain on my Treasury, and I could just delete them, but gifting them to a city state gives me a small amount of influence. Another way to get a big jump in your influence with a city state is to capture and then a return one of their Workers. Most often this happens when a barbarian has captured the Worker, and then you capture it. You have the option of keeping the Worker for yourself, and in the early game I would probably do that because the Worker is so valuable. But at a certain point I have enough Workers, and getting the 45 influence points for returning it starts to be more effective. Remember that you have to keep earning influence points to keep up your relations, so even if you get an ally of a city state for a few turns. it will naturally decay back to Neutral. By around the middle of the game if you playing well you can start to invest the resources needed to maintain your relationships. City States and War If you are allied with a city state and you get into a war with another player, a city state you are allied with will join you in the war. Of course, the same is true for the other player, so the war between the two players could also involve 3-4 city states dragged in as allies. You cannot make peace with a city state while it is allied to a player you are at war with. You have to first make peace with that player (or wipe them out if that suits you). However, if you can get more influence with that city state and supplant the other player you can get that city state to ally with you can turn around and attack your enemy. Generally a large cash gift can do this, once again showing the utility of a fat Treasury. Exploration You cannot have diplomatic relations with a city state you haven't met, so this reinforces the idea that you have to explore the map as soon as possible. Of course, you have to balance this with other priorities, such as expanding your cities and defending them, but finding the right balance is what all the Civilization games are about. On most maps this means you should be giving some attention to developing your naval power and technologies. There seems to be a bias to city states being coastal, and in many cases they are on small islands. Of course there are a number of motivations for exploring the map. First of all, you need intelligence of what you are up against with the other players. And unless you are on a very large land mass, you will want to find added lands for settlement. Finding Natural Wonders adds to Happiness in your Empire, so finding them all is important. And last, the unexplored sections of the map have a strong tendency to spawn barbarian units against you. Early on you cannot traverse Ocean tiles and need to stick to Coastal tiles. The unit here is the Trireme, which you can build once you discover Sailing. I will usually build 1-2 Triremes in a coastal city to go around the coast of the land mass I am on and scout out the situation. If another land mass or island is sufficiently close I can cross to it without entering an Ocean tile and extend my exploration. But to really explore the whole map you need to get to Caravels. This Renaissance Era unit becomes available when you discover Astronomy, and is essentially a naval scouting unit. It can enter Ocean tiles. Slatton were honored to welcome Dan Cohen as guest to the show.   About Dan Cohen:   Dan Cohen is a dynamic entrepreneur with over twenty-five years of experience and a deep passion for brand building. Dan is recognized for his strategic approach and ability to foster strong, lasting relationships. With release of his book, Awakenings In Real Life, he tells the story of his dad's awakening from his dementia. When his father awoke, it woke Dan up too. Dan also hosts a podcast with the same name.   About Awakenings In Real Life:   The "Awakenings In Real Life" podcast tells inspiring stories of transformation, meaning and hope. While we typically think of an Awakening as a "Getting Up" or "Spiritual" or "Religious" in nature, an "Awakening" is also an awareness, recognition, or realization of something. Dan Cohen shares stories of people awakening and then triumphing over bullying, addiction, disability, illness, trauma, loss, near death experiences and more.   The "Awakenings In Real Life" memoir was inspired from his father's awakening from his dementia, and the message dad sent that he still appreciated and wanted to live life, an experience that reshaped his perceptions of family, memory, and resilience. In these pages, Dan draws on a lifetime of lessons from his father's humor, toughness, and compassion, sharing family stories of love, inspiration, and hope.

Mental health therapist Ann Russo brings a unique lens to sexual empowerment—one shaped by growing up in a non-traditional family, exploring Christianity as a queer person, and dedicating her work to helping people reclaim their sexuality from religious trauma and cultural conditioning. In this powerful conversation, Ann and Jenny explore how women's sexuality has been systematically erased and shamed through religious narratives—from the Virgin Mary to Mary Magdalene—and how that conditioning shows up in our bodies, our relationships, and our mental health today, even if we weren't raised religious. Ann shares how keeping her family dynamics secret as a child created a pattern of protecting others at the expense of her own truth—a pattern many women carry around their sexuality and desires. They dive into the Madonna-whore complex, why women still feel obligated to have sex with their partners, the phenomenon of "lesbian bed death," and Jenny's theory about why female-centered sexuality might actually satisfy male partners more deeply. The conversation highlights the recently conducted "Total Civic Generosity Report" by Whole Whale, which sheds light on geographic disparities in generosity and the significant contributions of small-dollar donors. Key Insights: Generosity Across Income Levels: The report reveals a striking contrast in charitable contributions between income levels. Households earning under $50,000 contribute about 14.2% of their income to charity, while those earning between $500,000 and $2 million contribute only 3.9%. This challenges the notion that high-value donors are more crucial than small-dollar donors, emphasizing the importance of valuing all levels of giving. State-Specific Generosity: Utah leads with the highest ratio of adjusted gross income giving at 6.61% and remarkable volunteer rates. This underscores the need for nonprofits to tailor messaging based on geographic data, recognizing the unique philanthropic landscapes of each state. Impact of Religious and Non-Affiliated Trends: The decline in religious affiliation impacts volunteerism, with many informal acts of generosity going unreported. This highlights the need for better data representation in understanding volunteer contributions.

How do we navigate this period of oppression and division? How do we live in modern times with all the chaos that surrounds us? Religious scholar, mystical teacher, and author of more than 40 books, Andrew Harvery, joins us today to talk about how to birth the new in times of extreme turbulence. Andrew is also the founder of the Institute for Sacred Activism. We are all experiencing the destruction of the old firsthand, but where do we turn? Andrew offers wisdom by discussing his latest book, "The Magdalene Revolution: The Rise of the Sacred Feminine and the Birth of Radical Equality."  Andrew shares a firsthand experience he had many decades ago involving a vision of Mary Magdalene at her cave in the south of France. He felt an enormous peace in this place, yet he was outraged at how the church had demonized her. Upon leaving her cave, he turned back and saw her in golden light. Andrew believes Mary Magdalene is an essential part of Jesus's story. He understands that she is the sacred partner of Jesus. She was the first to see Jesus after Resurrection yet the Bible, written by men, painted her as a lunatic. Andrew explains how the Sophianic Gospel shows that Mary Magdalene and Jesus recognized the divinity in one another. She helped him come deeper into his body so they could bring in a love force to birth a new humanity. Mary Magdalene's evolution was very complex. In the Gnostic Gospels, it is believed that she was the sacred partner to Jesus. She also had great skill in healing and liberating people. As they grew united in the mission, she became more empowered and more illumined. She taught the Feminine Mysteries to groups of women as she expanded. The Sophianic Gospel talks specifically about Mary Magdalene's sacred spirituality.  Once you bring together the messages of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, you see a life force of love is being birthed. This represents enormous joy and power. It's a whole new level of radiant empowerment.    Andrew believes that Jesus, Mother Mary, and Mary Magdalene are all incarnations of the Divine, fully empowered and sacred. Andrew has done extensive research, and he shows how there are fragments in the Bible that tell the story. He presents a grounded version of how they actually lived. This story is a completion and a missing piece. It is ripe for this time as a vast hunger is rising in humanity. This is an expression of love and connection of all of creation. This is the gift of the Divine Feminine. Spirit and Matter are being healed through this resurgence. This is Part 1 of the interview. Info: www.andrewharvey.net

Thirsty? This week, Jesus offers a drink that quenches forever. Peter Walsh, Elizabeth Garnsey, and John Kennedy look at the story of the Samaritan woman at the well and discuss how Jesus satisfies our thirst, how he reaches across boundaries, and how this event mirrors some of the Bible's oldest stories.Father Peter's Vlog 10.8.19 (Holy Land Pilgrimage Day 6): Holy Land Pilgrimage PlaylistThemes and ApplicationWhy do you think John places this story right after Nicodemus? What contrasts between Nicodemus and Photini stand out to you? What boundaries does Jesus cross in this encounter? National? Ethnic? Religious? Gender? Moral? Social? Which of these feels most radical in our current context? The woman becomes the first evangelist in John's Gospel. What does her testimony teach us about how faith spreads?Personal ReflectionHave you ever felt like an outsider to a community, system, or church? What does Jesus' posture toward the Samaritan woman say into that experience?Jesus names the truth of the woman's life without condemnation. What would it be like to let Christ see your full story without defensiveness?Leonard Cohen wrote, “There's a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.” Where are the cracks in your life through which grace might be entering?Broader Spiritual ConsiderationsIn the Orthodox tradition, the Samaritan woman is known as Saint Photini (The Enlightened One). How does viewing her as a saint change the way you read the story? If Jesus is the true “well” from whom living water flows, what does that imply about Christian unity across divisions? What would it look like for communities to reflect the ever-flowing nature of living water rather than building dams of exclusion?Learn more about St. Mark's at https://www.stmarksnewcanaan.org

In the latest episode of the Nonprofit News Feed, the hosts delve into the intricacies of giving and volunteering across the United States, as well as the pressing environmental challenges facing nonprofits today. The conversation highlights the recently conducted “Total Civic Generosity Report” by Whole Whale, which sheds light on geographic disparities in generosity and the significant contributions of small-dollar donors. -------- NonprofitNewsfeed.com Summary of hundreds of news sources. The post The Donor You're Undervaluing Is the One Who Gives the Most

The Dismantling of the Religious Self Four Lenten Reflections on Delusion, Abandonment, and the Life That Remains in God “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” John 12:24 Second Reflection The Violence We Call Righteousness On the Ego That Survives Inside Virtue “They being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.” Romans 10:3 When the man sees that fulfillment cannot be found in religious life itself, he turns toward righteousness. He disciplines himself. He purifies his conduct. He restrains his passions. He orders his thoughts. He seeks purity. Outwardly, transformation occurs. Inwardly, something remains untouched. The ego survives. It survives inside virtue. St. John Climacus writes that vainglory completes every virtue the man performs. It attaches itself to fasting. It attaches itself to prayer. It attaches itself to obedience.
It whispers: This is yours. Virtue becomes possession. The man begins to live from righteousness. He experiences himself as stable because he is righteous. He trusts his righteousness. This trust separates him from God. Because union with God requires the loss of trust in oneself as source of life. The Pharisee stands before God and speaks truth. He fasts. He obeys. He lives faithfully. And remains separate. Because he still exists as the center of his own existence. The tax collector possesses nothing. He cannot lift his eyes. He does not trust himself. Christ says he goes home justified. Because justification belongs to the man who has nothing left to preserve. St. Isaac says that until the soul despairs of itself, it cannot rest in God. Not emotional despair. Ontological despair. The knowledge that one does not possess life. Righteousness that preserves the ego prevents union. Because union requires death. Not moral improvement. Death. The man must lose the self that lives apart from God. Virtue cannot substitute for this death. Virtue can conceal it. The ego can survive indefinitely inside righteousness. And remain alone. ⸻ This is the most dangerous stage of the spiritual life. Because sin is obvious. But righteousness can conceal separation. The sinful man knows he is sick. The righteous man believes he is alive. Christ said to the church of Laodicea, “You say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not knowing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.” Revelation 3:17 This is not addressed to pagans. This is addressed to believers. To those who have acquired religious identity. To those who possess righteousness and draw life from it. They do not feel their need. They do not cry out. They do not seek life because they believe they possess it. This is why Christ says, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Luke 5:32 Not because the righteous do not need Him. But because those who believe themselves righteous cannot receive Him. They are full. And God only fills the empty. St. Sophrony writes that the greatest tragedy is when man begins to live from himself rather than from God. Even if this life is clothed in virtue, it remains separation. It remains death. Virtue can purify behavior without destroying autonomy. It can cleanse the exterior while leaving the center untouched. Christ speaks with terrifying clarity about this. “You clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self indulgence.” Matthew 23:25 The outside can be purified. The inside can remain intact. The ego does not resist virtue. It feeds on virtue. It incorporates virtue into itself. It expands through virtue. It becomes righteous. And this righteousness becomes its shield against God. Because God does not come to improve the ego. He comes to crucify it. St. Paul says, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Galatians 2:20 This is not metaphor. This is the destruction of the autonomous center of existence. As long as the man lives from himself, even virtuously, he remains separate. Because life belongs only to God. St. Silouan the Athonite saw this with terrible clarity. He had labored greatly. He had prayed. He had struggled. He had purified himself. And yet the Lord allowed him to descend into hell. Not because he was sinful. But because righteousness had not yet been shattered. And Christ said to him, “Keep thy mind in hell, and despair not.” Not because hell was his destination. But because only in the destruction of self trust could union be born. As long as the man stands on his own righteousness, he stands alone. Only when this ground collapses does he begin to stand in God. Archimandrite Zacharias writes that God allows even the virtuous man to see his utter poverty so that he may cease drawing life from himself. This is the blessed despair that gives birth to true life. This despair is not psychological collapse. It is ontological revelation. The revelation that without God, one does not exist. Christ says, “Apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 Not less. Nothing. Not even righteousness. When this is seen, virtue loses its power as identity. It remains. But it no longer belongs to the man. It becomes the life of Christ within him. Before this death, virtue belongs to the ego. After this death, virtue belongs to God. This is why the saints do not trust their righteousness. They fear it. They flee from it. Abba Poemen said, “A man may appear to be silent while his heart condemns others. Such a man is talking constantly.” Outward virtue. Inward autonomy. Separation remains. Another elder said that even if a man raises the dead but trusts himself, he has lost everything. Because union is not achieved by virtue. It is achieved by death. This is why the saints see themselves as sinners even when they are purified. Not because they deny reality. But because they do not live from themselves. They live from God. St. Isaac writes that the man who has truly seen himself is greater than the man who raises the dead. Because he has seen the truth. He has seen that he does not possess life. He has seen that all righteousness belongs to God. This vision destroys the ego at its root. And only when the ego dies can God become life. Until then, righteousness remains violence. Violence against truth. Violence against union. Violence against love. Because it preserves the illusion of existence apart from God. The elder Sophrony says that as long as man attributes righteousness to himself, he remains enclosed within the prison of his own being. He cannot escape. He cannot breathe. He cannot live. Only when righteousness is lost as possession does it become life. Only when the man ceases to exist as source does God become his existence. This is why Christ says, “Whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 16:25 Not improves it. Finds it. Because it did not belong to him before. This is the second dismantling. Not the destruction of sinful identity. The destruction of righteous identity. Not the loss of vice. The loss of ownership of virtue. The loss of oneself as the one who lives. Until this death occurs, the ego survives. It survives inside prayer. It survives inside obedience. It survives inside humility itself. It survives inside righteousness. And remains forever alone. --- Text of chat during the group: 01:28:35 Danny Moulton (Lakeside, Ohio): I'm wondering how fear and ego interplay in producing unhealthy religiosity. It seems to me ego and fear are two sides of the same coin. Ego is fed when we think we are righteous and doing religion right, but fear calls the shots when we think we are unrighteous and doing religion wrong. It seems both can lead to obsession with something other than Divine love. The Apostle John says that perfect love drives out fear. I believe this is absolutely true, but fear sure can put up a good fight at times. 01:32:27 Fr Martin, Arizona: What do you think of this? Shortly after arriving at my first parish, I told my spiritual father about all the things I would change. He said, “Check with God. He didn't give you the football and tell you to run with it. What if God send you there to fail?” 01:33:46 Jaden Abrams: Father, bless! I was really impacted by these last two talks, thank you very much. What change can I make today to die to myself and stop sitting next to the vine. 01:35:31 Kate: When you speak about the death of the ego, is it more like a process of dying rather than something that is accomplished once and for all?  And I find my self asking how, how does the ego die?  Is it a simultaneous process of the dying of the ego and the soul growing in union with Christ? 01:40:29 Una: I was a complulsive A-getter in college, too. Thank you for sharing. 01:41:05 Angela Bellamy: Reacted to "Father, bless! I was..." with ❤️ 01:42:47 Shannon: It feels must bleed out our ego and diappear into the darkness in order for God to turn light.  Not knowing where the next step, but trusting in God.  We disappear into prayer/ looking through window with lamps lite hearts 01:44:16 Fr Martin, Arizona: Today's retreat convicted me. I'm not sure where to begin poking at my sense of self-identity and autonomy. My anxiety reveals to me that I harbor some delusions about myself. I used to visit a Romanian monk who was imprisoned and tortured by communists. Surprisingly, he never complained about that. Rather he said to me once, “Before I was imprisoned, I knew God in my books. After I was alone in prison, I found God in my heart.” 01:45:02 Jaden Abrams: How do I go about finding a spiritual Father? Am I supposed to choose, discern, let him "come to me", combination of all? I have fallen in love with the east in general and am immersing myself as much as possible please pray for me. 01:47:13 Julie: Reacted to "How do I go about fi…" with
