Blount County has many free events in the spring for you to laugh and learn a little history. These are put on by the Smoky Mountain storytellers. There are several members of this group who provide entertainment.. whether it be fact or fiction when it comes to East Tennessee. Some are comical, and some are ghostly. It's Flu season. Dr. Ryan Redmond, Medical Director at East Tennessee Children's Hospital explains to host Michele Silva, which patients are most at risk for the flu and the importance of getting a flu shot. We also talk about signs and symptoms, how long your child should stay out of school and when they are contagious. There are three veteran's cemeteries in Knox County with more than 17,000 graves. Each year volunteers purchase and then place a Christmas wreath on the graves of veterans. The wreaths are only a $15 donation through Wreaths Across America. The passing of Stan Brock, the founder of Remote Area Medical, has saddened the community, and the world. He touched millions of lives in many ways. Brock started RAM thirty-three-year years ago. The free health clinics have helped more than 740,000 people across the globe by providing free, dental, vision, and medical care, Michele Silva last spoke to Stan Brock here in studio as the non-profit group was getting ready to head to Puerto Rico on a mission trip following Hurricane Maria. It's an interview that aired on our Sunday morning show, East Tennessee Now. It's a conversation that Michele cherishes and wanted to share. Remote Area Medical is coming back to Tennessee at the end of the month. They have clinics coming up in Jefferson County and Fentress County. But, they need volunteer dentists, eye doctors, and more. For many pet owners, having a dog makes for a great companion. For veterans, a dog can enhance their life in many ways. Smoky Mountain Service Dogs trains and raises dogs (with help from volunteers,) and then matches them up with local vets in East Tennessee.
