Welcome to Episode 984 Cynthia Chaplin interviews Maya Dalla Valle, in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. More about today's guest: Maya was destined to be a winemaker. In 1986, the year she was conceived, her parents, Naoko and Gustav, made their first vintage of estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. The following year—the year she was born—they planted Maya's Vineyard, a 5-acre block of Cabernet Sauvignon that has become one of the most revered winegrowing sites in America. In 1992, this remarkable vineyard yielded a wine that would go on to earn Dalla Valle's first perfect 100-point score from legendary critic Robert Parker. Growing up at Dalla Valle in the company of winemakers like Heidi Barrett, Tony Soter and Mia Klein infused Maya's formative years with a sense of place and purpose that has come to define her adult life. In 2017, Dalla Valle became a true multigenerational winery, when Maya joined the winery as director. Committed to earning her place in the family business before coming to Dalla Valle, Maya holds a master's degree in viticulture and enology from Cornell University, and a master's of business and science degree in vineyard and winery management from France's prestigious Bordeaux Science Agro. Equally important, Maya gained invaluable hands-on winemaking experience at Ornellaia e Masseto, Bodegas Rolland, Pétrus and Château Latour. “Dalla Valle is my home. It is also my family's legacy,” says Maya. “I am so excited to be working alongside my mom. Dalla Valle is her life's work, and what she has created is remarkable. I also know that the greatest wineries are judged in terms of decades and generations, and that our story is still being written. I am honored to be carrying our family's legacy into a second generation.” To learn more about today's guest visit: https://www.dallavallevineyards.com/people/maya-dalla-valle/ info@DallaValleVineyards.com About today's Host: Cynthia Chaplin is a Vinitaly International Academy certified Italian Wine Ambassador, a professional sommelier with Fondazione Italiana Sommelier, a member of Le Donne del Vino, and a Professor of Italian wine and culture. Born in the USA, Cynthia moved to Europe in 1990 where she has lived in Spain, Belgium, England and Italy. She chose to center her career in Rome and immerse herself in the Italian wine sector, which is her passion. She has taught university students and expats, works with embassies, corporations and private clients, creating and presenting tastings, events, seminars and in-depth courses. Cynthia is a wine writer, translator, and a judge at international wine and sake competitions. She consults with restaurants and enotecas assisting in the development of comprehensive wine lists and excellent food pairings, as well as advising private clients who want to develop a comprehensive Italian wine collection. She lives with her British photographer husband on the shore of Lake Bracciano, north of Rome, where they share their beautiful garden with one massive grapevine, two border collies and an arrogant diva cat. The Hearing Voices Network is a global affiliation of support groups where people who hear voices or see visions can find support and be believed, rather than pushed towards medication. The group was started in the 80's and has chapters all over the world, including the Pacific Northwest. One of their fundamental precepts is that trying to convince people that their experiences aren't real isn't effective. Kate Hill is the director of the Portland Hearing Voices group. Derek Pyle is the group facilitator for Bear Creek Hearing Voices Network. They both join us to talk about their experiences.

Producers/Hosts: Jim Campbell and Amy Browne This series is made possible in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission Welcome to this edition of Maine: The Way Life Could Be, a series in which we look at challenges and opportunities facing Maine in the lifetimes of people alive today. The population of Maine has been the oldest and “whitest” in the state, but even before the real estate boom during the pandemic, some of state’s demographics were starting to shift. Today we look at the 2018-2028 demographics forecast for the state, with Maine’s State Economist, Amanda Rector, author of the report. We also talk with Jim Fisher, Deer Isle Town Manager and Hancock County planner, about how some of the trends play out in real life in our communities. Guests: Amanda Rector is the State Economist for Maine. In this capacity, she conducts ongoing analysis of Maine’s economic and demographic conditions to help inform policy decisions. Amanda is a member of the State of Maine's Revenue Forecasting Committee and serves as the Governor's liaison to the U. S. Census Bureau. She started working for the state in 2004 and has been State Economist since 2011. She earned a BA in Economics from Wellesley College and her Master’s in Public Policy and Management from the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine. Jim Fisher is the Town Manager for Deer Isle and former senior planner with the Hancock County Planning Commission. He earned a doctorate in urban regional planning from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and was a Fulbright scholar. He also hosted “Common Health” here on WERU for several years. FMI: Maine Population Outlook, 2018-2018, Office of the State Economist State Economist Amanda Rector presents Trends and Outlook for Maine’s Economy to the Maine Association of Mortgage Professionals, June 8, 2022 Pandemic Migration Spurs Maine’s Biggest Population Growth in Two Decades, Jessica Piper, Bangor Daily News, December 27, 2021 About the hosts: Jim Campbell has a longstanding interest in the intersection of digital technology, law, and public policy and how they affect our daily lives in our increasingly digital world. He has banged around non-commercial radio for decades and, in the little known facts department (that should probably stay that way), he was one of the readers voicing Richard Nixon's words when NPR broadcast the entire transcript of the Watergate tapes. Like several other current WERU volunteers, he was at the station's sign-on party on May 1, 1988 and has been a volunteer ever since doing an early stint as a Morning Maine host, and later producing WERU program series including Northern Lights, Conversations on Science and Society, Sound Portrait of the Artist, Selections from the Camden Conference, others that will probably come to him after this is is posted, and, of course, Notes from the Electronic Cottage. Amy Browne started out at WERU as a volunteer news & public affairs producer in 2000, co-hosting/co-producing RadioActive with Meredith DeFrancesco. She joined the team of Voices producers a few years later, and has been WERU's News & Public Affairs Manager since January, 2006. In addition to RadioActive, Voices, Maine Currents and Maine: The Way Life Could Be, Amy also produced and hosted the WERU News Report for several years. She has produced segments for national programs including Free Speech Radio News, This Way Out, Making Contact, Workers Independent News, Pacifica PeaceWatch, and Live Wire News, and has contributed to Democracy Now and the WBAI News Report. She is the recipient of the 2014 Excellence in Environmental Journalism Award from the Sierra Club of Maine, and Maine Association of Broadcasters awards for her work in 2017 and 2021. Say It Skillfully® is a show that helps you to benefit from Molly Tschang's expert guidance on the best possible ways to speak your mind at work in a positive and productive manner. Episode 138 is the 26th monthly feature of “Our Voices,” intended to accelerate social change that levels the playing field—helping everyone live to their full potential. In hearing the life journeys of people you might not otherwise encounter, you'll gain empathetic understanding for what may be a very different experience of what it means to grow up, go to school, struggle, work and live in our world. The aim is for you to see a bit of yourself in these journeys, and embrace—we're more similar than not. In this episode, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the US Naval Academy Carolyn Chun joins Molly and shares her journey from childhood “math geek” to a profession as researcher and educator and now advocate for social justice in higher education. As a mixed-race, female, civilian in a white, military, male dominated workplace, Carolyn will reveal her unexpected journey that includes how she's “making waves” to uncover the reality of gender bias and discrimincation and be a catalyst for long overdue change. Don't miss this opportunity to hear what it takes to “take a stand” and the grit and determination to pursue justice. Carolyn inspires all to know no boundaries and to commit to taking action so that all can be safe, seen and heard, and our true and best selves.
Let's take a moment to be grateful and appreciate the beauty that abounds with the multigenerational, community-based choir of mostly non-professional singers, Jimetta Rose & The Voices of Creation. For their debut album “How Good It Is,” Rose took a deep dive into spiritual jazz to cover the 1978 classic by Sons & Daughters of Lite with “Let The Sunshine In.” “This song is often the opening to our live set and it sets the tone for what we're sharing each time we hit that stage,” says Rose. “The sun shines for every person not just some, we sing with that same brave and inclusive love.” P.S. Can you spot the voice of KCRW's own Novena Carmel? Hint: She sings alto!

In this episode we hear from seven people who talked with Tim to answer the question, “What is the American Dream?" Tim set out to get the answer to the question on the streets of his hometown, Pittsburgh. You'll hear from Vidya, Dwayne, Chuck, Leah, Jack, Tamara and Charlie. Each person was selected randomly in “man on the street” interviews, and we had no idea what they would say, but all of their answers were moving, thought-provoking and inspiring. Happy Independence Day! https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/7_Voices_-_The_American_Dream_auphonic.mp3 For thousands of years, around the world, people weren't trusted to govern themselves. It was assumed you needed a king, a czar or a dictator to decide what's best for you. But in 1776, a group of brave revolutionaries came along with a different idea. They believed that common and civilized people could run their own country. That they didn't need a king, a monarchy or a dictatorship to run their lives. They believed in freedom, and they spelled it out in the Declaration of the Independence, and the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution. They created the greatest country in the history of the world based on the principles contained in these documents. The thinking is that all people want to be free to decide for themselves on everything from religion and work, to how they raise their families, what they could own, how they could own it and how they can craft their own lives for themselves. But it's more than just wanting to be free. They deserve to be free. The founders of the United States of America said it's not the government that should have the power to grant you your fundamental rights or take them from you. Instead, your rights come from a higher source of power, that your rights and freedoms already exist. They believed that you are born a free person. You can only lose that freedom or certain freedoms when someone else takes them from you. These thoughts inspired a revolution. Time and again over America's history, it has had to struggle and sometimes fight over the very issue of freedom, and many of the freedoms we now cherish. There is always someone who wants to take some freedoms away from someone else, and so it's a struggle for a country like ours to preserve those freedoms. But freedom has survived and thrived, and it has made many things possible for our nation, our people and our future. In the process, our nation has changed the world and advanced all humanity. We have a term for the thing that sets America apart from all other countries. It's just two words. When we think of what makes America the exception in all of history…we think of the American Dream. That is the subject of this episode. Links Declaration of Independence Constitution of the United States of America Revolutionary War, History Independence Day, National Parks Service
Paul talks with Zen Monk and author of ‘The Zen Life' Alex Mill who has just released a new book ‘A Shift to Love' Alex explains how Zen practice is compassionate self-mentoring with the process evolving and leading to an awareness that can shift everything. He discusses how our ability to experience ourselves as separate from the voices of egocentricity is the greatest opportunity both personally and for the survival of everything on the planet. It's about the life we are choosing to be responsible for and the changes we want to make and this is a fascinating insight into the practice that can help you to put everything together and see more clearly. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a way to create your life differently in a calm and compassionate way. Approach the process with kindness and love It's an ever-evolving process and practice that is very powerful Zen is all about the awareness because it's this that can shift everything around The process of practice is putting it all together and seeing how it works and when you become masterful you are able to see everything The ability we have at the crossroads is being able to prioritise the steps We are responsible for our experience of life and our experience is neutral it's the story we put around it that can be negative and debilitating The responsibility lies in doing something proactive to change things, it's shifting from being debilitated to being empowered The conditioned mind operates in something wrong, not enough and often we are completely unaware of how we contribute to the world Our ability to experience ourselves as separate from the voices of egocentricity is the greatest opportunity both personally and for the survival of everything on the planet It's not just the individual but the ripple effect with those around them There is a way to have it all, when you take action for yourself you become a role model for others Zen is a process of cleaning up karma both personally and universally, taking responsibility to leave something good for others BEST MOMENTS ‘Having all those opinions doesn't stop a war or feed a child' ‘You suffering over the suffering in the world helps nobody it just adds one more suffering person to the pile' ‘We need to shift out of where we have been to what is the possibility of becoming' ‘It is a parallel track for you and those around you' RESOURCES FOR THIS EPISODE Living the Zen Life A shift to Love - Alex Mill VALUABLE RESOURCES Mindset Change Podcast Mindset Coaching and Therapy The Mindset Coach UK Instagram Mindset Change YouTube NUMIND WELLNESS OFFER - 20% DISCOUNT AVAILABLE WITH THIS CODE https://numindwellness.com/ use Code: PAUL20 ABOUT THE HOST Paul Sheppard Paul is well known for his holistic therapy and coaching approach when working with anxiety, stress, confidence, and motivation, understanding, and treating the root causes and surrounding issues He has a passion for understanding how the mind works and has been trained in many therapies. What does it take to survive on the driest inhabited continent on Earth? Indigenous people have tens of thousands of years of knowledge about this, but their place in the conversations about water planning and management are often tokenistic at best, or worse, completely absent. Bradley Moggridge wants to change that. He's a Kamilaroi man and hydrogeologist, and he knows Indigenous knowledge needs to be central to Australia's water future.

Today I am discussing the murders of Dean and Tina Clouse as well as the disappearance of their child, Holly. In 1980, Dean and Tina packed up their car and moved their family from Florida to Texas for Dean to pursue a better career prospect. By all accounts the small family was happy and thriving. During this time Tina would often send letters and pictures of Holly back home to their families in Florida. But in October 1980, the letters stopped. By January 1981, Dean's mother received a phone call from a woman who identified herself as Sister Susan. Sister Susan explains that Tina and Dean decided to join their group and give up all their worldly possessions, so she'd like to return their car to her for a monetary donation of $1000. Dean's mother agrees, gets the vehicle back and spends the next 40 years agonizing over what really happened the young family. What she didn't know was that Tina and Dean had been found deceased just weeks within in getting this phone call. And while it was obvious that Tina and Dean had been murdered, they remained unidentified for decades while no one knew that baby Holly was still missing. In this episode you will hear two parallel timelines. You will hear about the life and disappearances of Tina, Dean, and their baby Holly. But you will also hear the timeline of when Tina and Dean were found deceased and the County's timeline of trying to identify them. Only intersecting over 40 years later when Tina and Dean are finally identified, and baby Holly was found alive. Tina and Dean Clouse were found murdered in Houston, Texas in January 1981 off Wallisville Road. Tina was 18 and Dean was 22 years old. Both were white with brown hair with Tina's hair having more of a red tint to it. The family would have been traveling in a 1978 red burgundy AMC Concord before it was returned to Dean's mother in 1981. LITTLE VOICES FROM BEYOND with KIERSTEN PARSONS-HATHCOCK “The biggest lesson I've learned is that I have to trust that quiet inner knowing.” – Kiersten Parsons-Hathcock, medium who channels messages from children from beyond Episode Summary: What would you do if you started hearing the voices of murdered children? Today we talk with Kiersten Parsons-Hathcock, author of Little Voices: How Kids in Spirit Helped a Reluctant Medium Escape and Heal from Abuse. Kiersten is an award-winning carpenter/furniture designer, and founder of Mod Mom Furniture, a kids' furniture company featured on ABC's Shark Tank. She's also a TEDx speaker and an intuitive medium who works for the National Institute for Law and Justice helping detectives and families uncover truth in missing persons and homicide cases. Listen in to hear Kiersten's fascinating journey into channeling the little voices who needed to be heard. Topics We Discuss: [4:19] How Kiersten's psychic gifts showed up – as little voices coming to her. She didn't ask for it; it just happened. [8:05] What Kiersten experiences when she hears from these children. How she manages what she finds out. [10:11] How the Universe connected Kiersten with law enforcement. She now works with law enforcement and with parents of lost kids. [12:47] After the channeled messages from children were validated by law enforcement in the physical world, and Kiersten's confidence grew, she was able to recall own sexual abuse at age five. [13:46] Kiersten's accuracy when channeling information about murdered children has increased with experience. She describes her gift as a blessing and a curse. [17:46] How Kiersten's repressed memories emerged. She eventually confronted her abuser. Later she found herself in extramarital relationship with another abuser. Standing up to an abuser as an adult healed her childhood abuse. [29:40] How Kiersten was groomed by her adult abuser. There were no intuitive warnings at first. But later, she started hearing how she was meant to have that experience, leave it, and write about it. [34:17] How common it is for adults who experienced childhood abuse to repeat experiences as an adult, with an unconscious intention to break the cycle. The psychological and the spiritual come together in a soup of dissociation, mental health and spiritual connection. [37:32] How Kiersten's little voices guided her, allowing her to safely escape from a potentially dangerous relationship with a predator.
