Upon starting graduate school, establishing and maintaining a successful research agenda is often the most challenging aspect of an academic career. This keynote address will discuss the lessons learned by one academic economist doing both traditional and policy-oriented research since finishing his PhD in 1995. Following the traditional "Birds and Bees" talk given to budding adults, this address is focused towards budding academics who will be facing the trials and tribulations of getting their creative works started, finished and validated by their peers inside and outside of academia. The goal is to impart a realistic picture of doing research so that young academics are better prepared for long-run success.
