Brightside Opportunities Center in Lancaster is changing lives with its innovative programs from fitness and wellness to education and youth initiatives. Sally Winchell, Wellness Director at Brightside, has been at the center for ten years. Winchell helped to design the layout of the fitness center. “We have strength and conditioning. We have some Zumba classes. We have a senior pound class. I work with younger people with lifting weights, doing personal training all the way up through people that are in their 90s, “said Winchell. Isiah Perry, Program Director at Brightside says the center offers nutrition programs as well. “Through these nutrition programs that we're doing with seniors, but also for the kids. Sally came into Stem camp and did a whole day all about nutrition, how to read a food label. My kids, we call them food detectives. What to stay away from Red dye is terrible for you. Sugar in these sodas is three times your daily limit. We're uplifting them to make healthy choices so that they can live of, well, vibrant life, “said Perry. Sometimes, participants can be a little hesitant when joining due to fear or self-doubt. However, Perry and Winchell work hard to build confidence among people in their fitness programs. “Or some people believe, I want to do this by myself and get down to a certain level before I enter into a public space. And the educational programs, I see the same thing with the youth, where they are shy to explore educational activities outside of the classroom. And that can be with learning loss due to Covid, whether or not confidence in their abilities, whether that's math or reading. But really that self-doubt is something that we have to overcome by instilling a sense of community and giving them a purpose, “said Perry.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell", it's a phrase that has become pretty infamous since its first introduction back in 1994. It was a policy that seemed to allow homosexuals to be able to serve in the United States Military, but sadly it would cause more harm than good and indirectly lead to one of the most tragic and brutal murders in Military history. Fresh from competing in the 2024 Senior Games at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, Sally Winchell and her group of Iron Mustangs returned home with a collection of well-deserved hardware. The team, composed of women aged 55 and older, made a significant impact not only through their victories but also by inspiring their fellow competitors with their dedication and strength. Today, on WITF's The Spark, Sally Winchell and the Iron Mustangs joined Marquis Lupton to discuss their journey, preparation, and motivations behind embracing powerlifting later in life. The Iron Mustangs, a formidable team of senior powerlifters, showcased their remarkable abilities at the Senior Games, held at the sprawling Spooky Nook Sports Complex. Their success is not merely measured by the medals they won, but by the barriers they broke and the stereotypes they shattered about aging and athleticism. Sally Winchell, the spirited leader of the Iron Mustangs, spearheaded the team's efforts. Among the many highlights, perhaps the most impressive was 70-year-old team member Jane Thompson's stunning performance, where she deadlifted over 200 pounds. Thompson's feat exemplifies the extraordinary capabilities of senior athletes when given the opportunity and support to thrive. Winchell, reflecting on their achievements, noted, "Our team is about more than just lifting weights. It's about lifting each other up and proving that age is just a number." Her words resonate deeply with many, as the Iron Mustangs' story is one of perseverance, community, and the relentless pursuit of personal bests. The journey of these women into powerlifting is as inspiring as their performances. Many of them took up the sport after the age of 60, driven by a desire to stay active, healthy, and strong. Their training regimen is rigorous, involving not only physical preparation but also mental fortitude. The Iron Mustangs train diligently, balancing workouts with proper nutrition and recovery, ensuring they are always at their peak. Their preparation for the Senior Games was intensive, marked by months of disciplined training and a strong support network. The camaraderie among the team members plays a crucial role in their success, providing motivation and encouragement to push through the toughest challenges. On The Spark, the Iron Mustangs shared their individual stories and collective experiences. They hope to inspire other seniors to embrace physical activity and perhaps even powerlifting, demonstrating that it's never too late to start something new. And, as the Iron Mustangs continue to celebrate their achievements, their influence extends beyond the competition. They are redefining what it means to age, one lift at a time, showing that strength, resilience, and determination have no age limit.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
At age 48 Sally transformed her life and built a new career on excitement and passion. That career has continued to grow since our last podcast. Recently, Sally earned the title of Ms. Senior America and began Sally's Iron Mustangs, a 65-year-old plus women's power weightlifting group...the movie will be released shortly.

https://www.patreon.com/rainbowcrimeshttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/RainbowcrimesDon't ask, Don't tell was a horrible policy created by the Bill Clinton administration. Clinton thought it would be a helpful law to allow LGBTQ member who wanted to serve in the military be able to serve. What it did was push us all further in the closet and not be able to teach anyone about who we are. In 1999, a soldier who fell in love with a trans woman drag performer was brutally murdered by a fellow soldier in his unit. Barry Winchell was called derogatory names but mostly faggot, although Barry was not attracted to men. He was involved with a woman, that was not how the members of his army unit saw it. True Crime Quickie is about the murder of Navy Sailor Allen Schindler in Japan and the 2021 suicide of PFC MP Kaylie Harris in Anchorage, Alaska.
