    E05: Direct To Community

Today's a very special episode. For the last 8 eyars, I've been a part of a hip-hop duo, Middle Clash, with my good friend and emcee, Taelor Gray. We recently announced our latest project, Clash Course, that's releasing next Wednesday on June 22nd. One of my favorite things about creating music for Middle Clash, is knowing that there is a whole entire community of supporters waiting patiently for us to drop. That community is everything. And over the years, Taelor and I have worked extremely hard to maintain our integrity as it pertains to delivering the best content for them. Clash Course is no different. And this time, we pressed up some vinyl to make it super official. Our community came through in a major way and we sold out of vinyl pre-orders within 72 hours. All because we had built-in community. I hope you enjoy this conversation between us, and take away some practical advice to use in your journey. On today's show, I got a chance to sit down with Marcus Hollinger, who is the SVP of Marketing at Reach Records & Co-Founder of Portrait Coffee. We discussed all things marketing, specifically in the areas of music, for both artists and producers. As algorithms, and new platforms arise, it's become more imperative to stay on top of marketing yourself as a music creative these days. Marcus helps to break down some of the different ways labels and companies address these needs, and what to keep in mind as you try to grow your brand. On today's show, I got a chance to sit down with my good friend STATIK LNK. STATIK is an American DJ, multi-instrumentalist, music producer, and songwriter. He also produces sample packs and beats within the hip-hop genre. His music has been classified as a combination of jazz, hip-hop, soul music, and electro-funk sounds. As a producer and DJ, he defies genre norms by fusing together the sounds of jazz, soul, funk, electronic music, and hip-hop. We discuss how he's navigated the world of licensing and publishing, and how he was one of the first producers/musicians to license his compositions as sample packs on the Tracklib platform. Many producers know all too well the highs and lows of awaiting payment for services rendered. For those that land major placements, that wait time can lag on for quite some time unfortunately. This is exactly why I've been preaching the minstry of MOATS. Producers have to make sure they have more than one option to grow revenue. When you have situations like waiting for payments for 6-12 months at a time, having multiple streams will help hedge against any missed or late payments. It's a must! I was joined today by my good friend and entrepreneur, Anthem, who's an award-winning producer, and the owner and operator of The Crate League. He knows this common problem better than most, and was gracious enough to share his experiences with the audience. Don't forget to like and subscribe whereever you listen to podcasts. Have been so for going on 20 years now, and I believe that this brand is the culmination of some years of putting in work as a music producer, publisher, a sample brand owner. My goal is to raise discussions around this culture, speaking to the movers and shakers in this world. And this includes a variety of guest, who are not just music, producers, but lawyers, publishers, tech owners, and founders running new music platforms. If you're interested in having a perspective from, someone who's lived through every aspect of being a producer, this is going to be the show that that's right for you. –––––– Follow Quips & Flips Substack Instagram Website

Welcome to the Quips & Flips Podcast. Where I have discussions with the people, who power the businesses and brands surrounding sample culture. I'm your host Wes Pendleton. Back in 2016 I joined together with a group of friends to create the production team and brand, Soul Surplus. Over the next 3 years we navigated the music production space in a myriad of ways. We had the opportunity to create a robust sample library, with sounds you can hear today on some of your favorite award-winning songs. We also had an opportunity to work with some of your favorite DAWs and software companies, cementing the Soul Surplus brand as a staple in the industry. At the top of 2020 we exited the business as owners. Fast forward to today, and the brand is still thriving on the Splice platform. Even though I stepped away from the day to day of running the brand, I still have a strong love for the culture, and the people and stories that make it what it is today. On this show, I'll highlight the people who keep this industry alive, and those who are continuing to push it forward. This is the Quips & Flips Podcast. Powered by Blue Collar Exec.
