Welcome to the Quips & Flips Podcast. We discuss all things, samples, production publishing, and music news. My name is Wes Pendleton. I am a producer and entrepreneur. Have been so for going on 20 years now, and I believe that this brand is the culmination of some years of putting in work as a music producer, publisher, a sample brand owner. My goal is to raise discussions around this culture, speaking to the movers and shakers in this world. And this includes a variety of guest, who are not just music, producers, but lawyers, publishers, tech owners, and founders running new music platforms. If you're interested in having a perspective from, someone who's lived through every aspect of being a producer, this is going to be the show that that's right for you. –––––– Follow Quips & Flips Substack Instagram Website
When music producer and entrepreneur Wes Pendleton lost a sixty-thousand dollar deal over a licensing dispute that should have been easy to solve, he asked himself whether anyone else had experienced this infuriating problem. Fast forward to the founding of Soul Surplus, a full-service production company that creates original music compositions and digital media for music producers, filmmakers, content creators, and brands. Having built his personal music library for over a decade, Wes co-founded Soul Surplus in 2016 as a response to the recurring issue he was experiencing in the music industry as a producer and entrepreneur. We talk with Wes about the founding of Soul Surplus and how his observations about the marketplace helped him realize that he couldn't do it alone. Wes shares how he and his team got together, what they each brought to the table and why he's so grateful that none of them have a big ego. He describes the circumstances where they nearly lost everything in 2019, and how, despite major setbacks, they were still able to reach their goal and be successfully acquired by another company. Wes also explains how being a lifelong learner has shaped his life and why he dedicates three hours every day to learning. It was an honor having Wes on the show, he has a wealth of knowledge and we can't wait to have him back on for part two!Key Points From This Episode:Introducing today's guest Wes Pendleton a music producer, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Soul Surplus. The difficulties that Soul Surplus faced during the summer of 2019 and how they almost lost it all.The advice Wes would give to his younger self in 2018: take your time. How Soul Surplus was still able to achieve its goals and be acquired despite major setbacks. What Wes considers to be one of his greatest creative achievements.Wes shares his approach to assessing talent and empowering people to do their best. What Wes observed about the marketplace that helped Soul Surplus stand out as a company: you can get more done with a team than with one person. The concept of the three-headed monster and how it informed the structure of Soul Surplus. How Wes's experiences as a black man informed their exit strategy. Why it was important for Wes to separate his love of music from his business decisions. How Wes recognized a problem that needed to be solved and built his company around that. The posturing that Wes has observed in the music industry and why he chooses not to operate like that. How Wes schedules his day to include several hours of learning.A breakdown of what Wes includes in his learning hours, and what he included on the day of recording. Two moments in Wes's life where he decided to take a low-pressure job to allow his mind the freedom to step back.Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Wes PendletonWes Pendleton on LinkedInWes Pendleton on InstagramSoul Surplus
Welcome to the Quips & Flips Podcast. Where I have discussions with the people, who power the businesses and brands surrounding sample culture. I'm your host Wes Pendleton. Back in 2016 I joined together with a group of friends to create the production team and brand, Soul Surplus. Over the next 3 years we navigated the music production space in a myriad of ways. We had the opportunity to create a robust sample library, with sounds you can hear today on some of your favorite award-winning songs. We also had an opportunity to work with some of your favorite DAWs and software companies, cementing the Soul Surplus brand as a staple in the industry. At the top of 2020 we exited the business as owners. Fast forward to today, and the brand is still thriving on the Splice platform. Even though I stepped away from the day to day of running the brand, I still have a strong love for the culture, and the people and stories that make it what it is today. On this show, I'll highlight the people who keep this industry alive, and those who are continuing to push it forward. This is the Quips & Flips Podcast. Powered by Blue Collar Exec.

Gavin is back and he isn't messin' around. UPDATE 12-4-19: The Democrats have moved forward with the next phase of their impeachment inquiry. They called three blatantly partisan constitutional scholars in who (obviously) said "get cheeto hitler" like the Democrats paid - I mean wanted - them to. The phase we talked about was the last part of the Intelligence Committee's gathering of "facts". Now it goes to the Judicial Committee where they write the articles of impeachment to later be sent to the house floor so we can get THE WHOLE GANG in on it!! Obviously the music wasn't my own. Hi, my name is Wes Pendleton. I’m a co-founder and the managing partner of Soul Surplus. When we first started Soul Surplus as a company in late 2016, the ideas behind new products came easy. At that time we were extremely boutique, with only myself, and my partners, John & Joel Mcneill creating the products from top to bottom. We only averaged around 1 product a month, which allowed us to take a bit of time with each release. Fast forward to the spring and summer of this year, and at one point we were releasing 3 products a week. There were many factors for doing so, but we knew going in, that we wouldn’t be able to sustain our productivity at that clip. In June we had a long meeting, discussing where we were going in the next few quarters and beyond. One thing that we immediately agreed on was slowing down. A lot. We wanted to get back to that boutique feel. Taking our time with ideas, and creativity Focusing heavily on the story behind each release, and deep diving into the foundations of all things surrounding it, including sound and visual aesthetic. The journey from idea, to creation, to distribution, isn’t always easy. And we all agreed that it was time to create formal operations, so streamline our process that much more. We’ve made a good habit of recording our discussions and meetings, and we toyed around with the idea of letting our most loyal followers in on some of the process behind the products they’ve grown to love. In this episode you’ll hear a recorded discussion between myself and John Smythe. This audio is raw, straight from the recorder, and only edited in certain places for trade secret purposes. You’ll also hear John hop in to elaborate on certain portions in the audio timeline. These points were recorded after the initial conversation. This is Process To Product.

Conditional Loveclick HERE to playHow many times have you told someone "I Love You" and meant it with all your heart? How many times have you told that same someone once they hurt your feelings that you hate them and don't want to see them anymore because of how they broke your trust and treated you? A lot of times our love for someone has conditions and limitations attached to it that we don't tell the other person until it's to late and we no longer love them because of what they did. People go around in life loving other but that same love has untold conditions attached to it. Join the crew from SLSRadio as they talk about "Conditional Love" and discuss the difference between the love WE have for each other and the love HE has towards us.Playlist:Sho Baraka ft JR, Trip Lee, Alex Medina and Flame-We Can Be More (Gentlemen's Remix)Dwayne Tryumf ft Gavin Holligan-Proverbs 31 Woman (Remix)Canton Jones ft Twyse- W.O.G.
