Thinking is good for us! My name is Tom and I love to think. I also love Jesus! In this podcast I invite you, Christian or otherwise, to join me on a journey of thinking through what it is to exist on this planet: politics, society, culture, biblical study, movies, entertainment and more I will be discussing these topics through the lens of loving God with all our mind and how this extends to loving each other and making a difference on the planet. Come and join me!
"God... Who are you?" In this rather turbulent time of opinion and frustration during the pandemic I have had a lot of questions for God: questions about His nature, His goodness, His existence, His will and His ways. In this episode I explore these questions in the form of a prayerful reflection where I speak to Him about the things that I'm feeling and ask Him what His own thoughts have been over the past year. As ever, with this series, the questions are unscripted, unplanned and for your own provocation, encouragement and invitation to ask more! I hope you enjoy it! As ever, please feel free to email me at withallyourmind1@gmail.com with any thoughts, feedback and questions! You can also find me on social media! In this episode I kick off the Questions Series for real with asking questions to myself. So often we want to point the finger outwards at everything and everyone else that should be contributing to change in the world without first asking "what am I contributing?" My heart in this episode is not to stray into self-condemnation, but to wrestle with some self-reflecting questions which allow me to be real with who I am, who I've been and who I want to become. I hope you enjoy! As a disclaimer - the volume on this episode is a little quiet, and the voice recording suddenly gets rather deep half-way through! I actually quite like my deeper, smoother voice when this happens, but it might be a bit jarring! Due to the episode being an unrehearsed reflection, it didn't feel right to rerecord my reflections inauthentically, so I've kept the recording, despite some of the technical bumps! I hope that it is still an enjoyable and challenging listen - it's probably my favourite reflection of the lot! This week I introduce a new series: Questions! I have a feeling that this could be a messy but exciting series, born out of a large amount of processing my thoughts that I have been doing over the past year. It has been a year of many questions, and probably not a huge amount of answers. Instead of trying to give planned thoughts and half-hearted solutions to all of my questions, I am going to spend the next few episodes in some times of unplanned reflection and questioning. This idea doesn't feel massively comfortable, I think it's going to be stretching, but a sincerely hope that it is helpful. I hope that these questions will serve to challenge you and to inspire you to do some questioning of your own! Please feel free to like, share and subscribe! The Three Act Story is one of the most basic structures for writing a story - it is recognisable in most Hollywood movies. In this episode I explain for the Three Act Story works through testing it against Toy Story before going on to explain the thrust of the main story of the Bible by structuring it as a Three Act Story and breaking down one or two of the themes. This was a bit of an experiment and I really enjoyed it! I hope it helps you to both understand the story for yourself and feel inspired to go and explore the story of the Bible as well! It's not a comprehensive covering... but we'll get there ;) If you have any feedback for me I would love to hear it! Stories are powerful. They provoke us, they stir our emotions and they resonate with our experiences. We remember stories far more deeply than most other forms of teaching or communication. Stories are incredibly powerful, with the best simply revealing to us the truths of life and saying: This Is. In this episode I explore how the Bible communicates through story, the ways in which stories are effectively communicated and some ways in which we might be letting ourselves be frustrated by the Bible's stories through not approaching them in the way they may have intended to be. Come and join me! As ever, I would love for your comments, feedback, or for you to share with your friends! Today I kick off a probably 5 parter series on the Bible! In this introduction I ask what the Bible is, why is matters and why is it significant that it was written by people? Through this we will be examining a little bit of what is called textual criticism and (hopefully) beginning to see how fascinating and complex the Bible can be when it's not being used as a weapon to win an argument. I really enjoy doing this Podcast and would love some help from you! Please send me feedback and questions/topics you'd like to hear more about on: withallyourmind1@gmail.com Also, if you were able to share this, or another episode with a friend or give me a rating on itunes, I would be eternally grateful! Today I attempt my first ever interview on the show! I'll be discussion with my friend Daniel the idea of Breaking Up With Silence. We talk about his experiences with using silence as a way of avoiding conflict and pain and parts of his journey where he learned to use his voice whilst still staying true to who he is. Daniel is smart, thoughtful and funny and his pearls of wisdom are well worth your time. I hope you enjoy! Please feel free to follow me and rate the show on itunes as well as on social media! Today I wrap up my first series on the value of having, sharing and critiquing opinions. I've spoken a lot so far about unity and seeking connection and the need to allow ourselves to be challenged by others. Today, I observe the fact that in 2020 much of this has been practised on social media and argue that we need to bring ourselves back into a higher priority for face-to-face community with those around us (and not just our hand-picked best friends!) If we want to see real change occur through our thoughts and actions then we need to learn to have a positive impact in our neighbourhoods, households and cities before we try and create for ourselves a platform on the internet! I hope you have enjoyed my first series! I'll be back next week with my first guest before launching into a few different streams of thought and subjects such as the Bible, art and entertainment and politics and culture! Please keep sending me your feedback and subscribing/rating/sharing the show! Email: withallyourmind1@gmail.com Facebook: With All Your Mind Instagram: with_all_your_mind
So many emotive arguments are full of assertion instead of a desire to seek education. Today I'm going to talk about where I see this going wrong, what I think it would look like to prioritise education over assertion and how we can go about doing this in our own lives and in the ways that we educate those who we have influence or authority over. This was a tricky episode to plan and record, I feel as though we're starting to come to the end of the foundational principles I want to set in how to go about conversations which seek connection and unity and its time to start have some. If you are coming at this episode fresh, please check out the previous episodes as well, as they build on each other! If you have feedback, please feel free to contact me! So far we have been talking about striving for unity and connection when having conversations and sharing opinions - but how can we treat people as responsible for their own minds and thoughts without trying to force them to agree with us or feeling powerless against them? In this episode I introduce the concept of "making people powerful" an idea fleshed out by a former Bethel leader called Danny Silk. We talk about how often we try and make ourselves the hero or the victim in an interaction, how to recognise that this is happening and what to do about it. Here are a couple of useful links for further listening to Danny Silk talk about this himself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm5E1P_BeCY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmKAOHKS65U Or you could read "Keep Your Love On" by Danny Silk. Last week I finished by saying that many groups are really just looking for your support or your silence. This week I'll be continuing that thought by exploring examples of tribalism (or, for alliteration's sake, uniformity) and how we must transfer this for unity: where we seek to be united over common group and connection as we seek to make a better world and to bring the Kingdom of Heaven to Earth. I hope you enjoy the show! Please do give me a subscribe and share me with your friends if you're finding what I'm saying to be helpful/useful/interesting etc! If not, please shoot me a message with some feedback! Email: withallyourmind1@gmail.com Facebook: With All Your Mind Instagram: with_all_your_mind
Conversations about ideas and opinions are very messy, especially on social media! Today I'm going to be exploring some key ways in which I think we shut down and ruin such conversations and why I think it is important to try and steer clear from them! Have questions or comments? Please find With All Your Mind on Facebook or email me at withallyourmind1@gmail.com!
Let's begin! Today we talk a bit about the vision behind this podcast and the pursuit of loving the Lord with all your mind. We also talk a bit about ideas and why it is so beneficial for us to have them and be willing to share them! If you're going to start sharing your opinions and ideas, there is a catch, though...
