Do you and your spouse disagree about discipline—one of you feels too strict while the other feels too soft? Are your kids pushing boundaries, playing you against each other, or reacting emotionally because expectations aren't clear? In this episode of the Extraordinary Family Life Podcast, Greg and Rachel Denning break down the authoritative parenting style—and why it's the gold standard for raising confident, capable, emotionally healthy kids. You don't need to parent the same way, but you do need to parent from the same underlying approach. We explain why discipline is rooted in teaching, not punishment, and how authoritative parenting creates structure without control and warmth without permissiveness. When parents are divided, kids feel insecure. When parents are united, children feel safe—and behavior improves naturally. This episode walks through the four major parenting styles, why authoritarian and permissive approaches both fail long-term, and how authoritative parenting balances firm boundaries with connection, respect, and clarity. We also discuss:Why kids actually need boundaries to feel safeHow to disagree as parents without damaging your marriageThe difference between being a boss and being a leader in your homeHow to repair mistakes in real time (even in front of your kids)Why teaching builds internal motivation while punishment creates fearIf you want kids who do the right thing for the right reason—and a home built on trust, stability, and mutual respect—this episode gives you the framework.Key Takeaways✅ The authoritative parenting style creates security and confidence.✅ Discipline works best when it teaches instead of punishes.✅ Kids need clear boundaries to feel safe—not freedom without limits.✅ Parents can have different styles but must share the same approach.✅ Firm and kind are not opposites—you need both.✅ Unity between parents prevents manipulation and power struggles.Memorable Quotes

Tara Dublin guest hosts for John on his holiday break. She talks about the piecemeal, haphazard, slow-trickle, fuckery release of the Epstein files. She also discusses reports that the US carried out airstrikes against targets in Venezuela over the Christmas holiday. Trump has made several contradictory statements to the press on the strikes, but it seems the target was a shipyard. Then, she interviews Alicia J. Rose who is a photographer, filmmaker and musician based in Portland. They talk about her show Menopunks which is a bold, unapologetic documentary that exposes the truth behind the science and the silence. The show is backed by a fierce lineup of iconic Portland musicians. In this episode, I share why celebrating everything celebratable is one of the simplest ways to create unity, empathy, and real connection. When we focus on gratitude, light, family, and shared joy, we find common ground across every culture, belief, and tradition. I explain how appreciating differences—not forcing equality—builds stronger communities and a true mindset of abundance. By honoring non-negotiable values while staying flexible in how we celebrate, we create environments where people feel seen, respected, and connected. That's how celebration becomes a bridge—and a legacy. To join my next free Friday Training sessions, email me at david@dmeltzer.com

Missionary martyr Jim Elliot famously wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Those words capture a vision of life that values eternal reward over temporary success—and they're being lived out today in an unexpected place: the NFL.When many people think of professional athletes, generosity may not be the first word that comes to mind. But Kirk Cousins, a 4-time Pro Bowl quarterback, is quietly challenging that assumption. For Cousins, faith isn't a compartment—it's the lens through which he approaches football, finances, family, and the future.A Faith Shaped at HomeKirk often points back to his upbringing as a pastor's kid. His parents modeled two complementary virtues: careful stewardship and open-handed generosity. Budgets mattered. Overspending was avoided. But when it came to helping others, generosity was practiced freely. That example left a lasting impression. As Kirk puts it, generosity was caught, not just taught. Watching his parents hold money loosely prepared him for a future where financial decisions would come with far greater stakes—and far greater temptation. When Kirk entered the NFL, the learning curve was steep. His first signing bonus—a six-figure check—was unlike anything he had ever seen. Unsure how to handle it, he called his dad for advice, only to discover they were navigating unfamiliar territory together. That moment marked the beginning of a stewardship journey that continues today. From the start, Kirk committed to simple but demanding principles: give first, save wisely, and live within bounds. Practicing those habits early helped anchor him when income grew and public pressure mounted. The Tension of a Finite CareerUnlike many professions, professional athletics comes with a built-in expiration date. That reality creates a unique tension: the need to save aggressively while still giving generously. For Kirk, that tension has become an invitation to trust God more deeply.Giving can feel risky when a career is visibly diminishing. Yet Kirk sees those moments as opportunities to shift the pressure off himself and back onto God—to believe that obedience and generosity create space for God to provide and direct what comes next. From Rules to RelationshipOne of Kirk's most compelling insights is the distinction between religious box-checking and genuine discipleship. It's possible, he admits, to treat giving like a checklist—do the minimum, meet the requirement, move on. But that's not the abundant life Jesus describes.Instead, Kirk points to Jesus' parable of the hidden treasure. When the treasure is truly seen as valuable, surrender becomes logical, even joyful. Financial decisions don't lead the heart; the heart leads the finances. When Christ is the treasure, generosity follows naturally.Scripture doesn't give a universal percentage or spending rule for believers. That absence is intentional—it drives us to prayer and discernment. Kirk and his wife, Julie, continue to wrestle with what “enough” looks like for their family, recognizing that the answer requires humility, wisdom, and the Holy Spirit's leading.Money, Kirk says, is a tool—a test, a testimony, and a means to an end. Growth without purpose risks becoming a search for control rather than an instrument for Kingdom impact. The question isn't just how much is being accumulated, but why.Unity in GenerosityOne of the most formative pieces of advice Kirk received early in his career was simple: always give in unity with your wife. That principle has shaped every major giving decision he and Julie make.Disagreement isn't ignored—it's prayed through. Spousal unity, Kirk believes, is often a channel through which God provides clarity and protection. Generosity practiced together strengthens both stewardship and marriage. As they consider estate planning and their children's future, Kirk and Julie intentionally prioritize wisdom over wealth. Their hope is not simply to pass down assets, but to raise children who can steward them faithfully.Their long-term vision includes generous support for their foundation and Kingdom causes, with no desire for wealth to linger aimlessly beyond its intended purpose. In Kirk's words, the goal is impact—not permanence. One place especially close to Kirk's heart is Christian education. His experience attending a Christian high school profoundly shaped his faith, and he's passionate about ensuring future generations have access to a similar formative environment. Supporting schools, teachers, and students has become a meaningful outlet for his generosity.A Different Definition of SuccessKirk Cousins' story reminds us that success isn't measured by contracts, trophies, or net worth—but by faithfulness. In a world that applauds accumulation, his life points to something better: surrender, trust, and joyful generosity rooted in Christ. As Ron Blue often says, the question isn't how much we can keep, but how much is enough—and what God would have us do with the rest.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I recently sold my business, and after paying off debts and taxes, I expect to have approximately $2–$2.5 million. It's a bit overwhelming, but I feel incredibly blessed and grateful. I have a few questions: How should I invest this money safely, given that I'm pretty risk-averse? How much cash should I keep on hand? And I also have a question about tithing.Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Kirk CousinsJulie & Kirk Cousins FoundationWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions every workday at (800) 525-7000. Our unity is God's plan. Unity in the church is how we show Jesus, know Jesus, and grow in Jesus. So why do we often feel so divided? Why do we fear that our unity is a fragile thing, easily broken? This passage helps us see that unity is not what we thought. It is not merely the absence of conflict or the absence of error, but a shared celebration of Jesus. We already share an essential unity with every true believer and we have an expansive unity that gets bigger and bigger as each of us happily agree with Jesus in every area of life.

FOCOLARE WORD OF LIFE January 2026 “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling.” (Eph 4:4)During the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity,[1] we are invited to focus our attention on a particular theme found in Paul's letter to the Ephesians. In what is called to be his “prison letters,” he urges his readers to give credible witness to their faith by being united with one another. Their unity is based on having one faith, one spirit and one hope, and only with this unity can they bear witness to Christ as “a body.” “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling.”Paul calls us to hope. What is hope and why are we invited to live it? It is a seed, a gift, and a task that we have the duty to protect, cultivate, and bring to fruition for the good of all. “Christian hope assigns us to that very narrow ridge, that frontier where our vocation requires us to choose, every day and every hour, to be faithful to God's faithfulness to us.”[2] The Christian vocation is not only a relationship between the individual and God. A Christian is called to love everyone who is a neighbor in the present moment. Christ prayed in the garden just before he was crucified, “I pray for them…so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me…” (Jn 17:21) In Chiara Lubich's talks and writings, we often find explicit references to unity, the primary aspect of her spirituality. Unity is the fruit of the presence of Jesus among us - and his presence is a source of profound happiness. “If unity is so important for Christians, then it follows that nothing is more opposed to our vocation than failing to live unity. We sin against unity every time we yield to the temptation, which continually resurfaces, to be individualistic, to do things on our own, or to be guided only by our own judgment, personal interests, or desire for esteem. We sin against unity when we ignore or even disregard others and their needs and rights.”[3] “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling.” In Guatemala, there is a very active dialogue among members of different Christian Churches. Ramiro writes: “We prepared the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity with a group of people from various Churches. The program included an arts festival organized together with the youth, as well as several celebrations held in different churches. The Catholic Bishops' Conference asked our group to continue working together to plan a moment of sharing during a meeting of Catholic bishops and leaders of different Churches, who were coming to Guatemala from many other countries to celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. Through these activities, we experienced a very strong unity among all of us and the fruits that it brings: fraternity, joy and peace." The more united Christians become, the greater the possibility for all humanity to fulfill, in a more complete way, the prayer for unity that Christ prayed in the garden. Prepared by Patrizia Mazzola and the Word of Life team[1] The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity takes place throughout the northern hemisphere from January 18 to 25 and in the southern hemisphere during the week after Pentecost. This year's prayer texts were prepared by an ecumenical group coordinated by the Armenian Apostolic Church.[2] Madeleine Delbrêl, French Catholic author, poet, and mystic, considered by many to be one of the most significant spiritual figures of the 20th century.[3] Chiara Lubich, Founder of the Focolare Movement, Commentary to the Word of Life of July 1985.

In his Christmas message, King Charles the Third invoked wartime spirit and urged communities to pull together in an increasingly divided world, saying, “With the great diversity of our communities we can find the strength to ensure that right triumphs over wrong.”The address was recorded in Westminster Abbey, marking the second consecutive year the King has delivered his message away from a royal residence. Speaking from the medieval Lady Chapel, he reflected on the 80th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day and praised the courage and sacrifice of the wartime generation. The King also highlighted acts of “spontaneous bravery” in recent emergencies, including the Bondi Beach attack in Australia, and spoke of the importance of faith leaders working together, referencing his prayer alongside Pope Leo during a Vatican visit. A Ukrainian choir performed a carol during the broadcast, underscoring the King's continued support for Ukraine.Quoting T. S. Eliot, the King called for calm and reflection as “our world seems to spin ever faster,” with aides suggesting the message alluded to the impact of new technologies and the idea of a digital detox. The broadcast avoided personal matters, including the King's health and his brother Andrew. Instead, it focused on the working royals, with footage of Prince William and Catherine, and images of Prince George visiting a homelessness charity for the first time. The message concluded with a reflection on the Christmas story as one of peace, reconciliation, and compassion, which the King described as “a prayer for our times.”Hear our new show "Crown and Controversy: Prince Andrew" here.Check out "Palace Intrigue Presents: King WIlliam" here.
In this powerful episode of Real Native Roots: Untold Stories, Vickie welcomes her longtime sister and truth-teller Dar “Diamond D” for a wide-ranging, deeply human conversation about identity, land, governance, media, healing, and courage. Dar is Mohawk, a border-tribe woman raised between matriarchs, ironworkers, longhouses, cities, and ceremony. Her life story moves from the St. Lawrence River to Los Angeles, Arizona, and finally Alaska, where land, water, and community helped her gather the many threads of her life into clarity. Together, Vickie and Dar explore what it means to grow into your name, to survive trauma without losing humor, to tell Indigenous truth even when it's dangerous, and to reclaim traditional governance rooted in consensus rather than colonial crumbs. Dar shares stories from investigative journalism, surviving a death threat, working in MMIP and victim services, running Native media spaces, mentoring youth, and holding community with both sharp honesty and deep love. This episode is about remembering who we are, refusing fear, lifting one another instead of pulling each other down, and returning to the waters that once gathered us. #RealNativeRoots #IndigenousVoices #NativeStorytelling #IndigenousTruth #DecolonizeEverything #IndigenousWisdom #NativePodcast #StoryAsMedicine #RealNativeRootsPodcast
Send us a textWhat if Christmas is less about a date on the calendar and more about a birth that can happen within you right now?In this Christmas reflection, we explore Christ Consciousness as a lived experience - not a religious performance, but a way of being rooted in presence, compassion, unity, and love. This episode invites a gentle return to what is already whole within you, especially in a season that can feel both meaningful and complex. We connect this message to a wider chorus of wisdom across spiritual traditions - from Buddha Nature in Buddhism, Krishna Consciousness in Hinduism, and remembrance and surrender in Islam, to devekut in Judaism, flow in Taoism, and earth-based traditions of kinship with life. Different languages, same center: nothing sacred is missing from you.We also unpack the often-misread teaching, “the kingdom of heaven is within you,” and bring it into everyday life - how you speak to yourself, how you breathe through tension, and how you choose gentleness when old patterns pull toward self-judgment.Whether this season feels joyful, quiet, heavy, or complicated, you're not alone. This episode offers simple, grounded reflections for embodying love over fear, unity over separation, and compassion over judgment, especially toward yourself. This is not a sermon. It's a reminder.A reminder of how Jesus lived - refusing exclusion, meeting others with love, and seeing worth in all. And an invitation to let presence do the heavy lifting, turning rituals into remembrance and longing into belonging. If this reflection resonates, follow the podcast, share it with someone who may need a gentle word today, and leave a review to help others find their way home.

Is chaos something to fear or something we can leverage? Kevin sits down with Kevin Black to discuss why chaos isn't inherently good or bad and how leaders can prepare to succeed in it. Kevin Black explains how natural behaviors, deeply rooted in our personality and life experiences, influence our reactions to chaos and shape team dynamics. He shares his chaos model, which features a taxonomy of control outcomes, from anarchy to deliberate resistance, and how leaders can identify and respond to each stage. They also discuss the four components of constructive chaos and how mishandling these can lead a team into destructive chaos. Carol is a planner, always preparing for what's coming up next. As the new year approaches, other people tend to do the same thing, and watching it brings to mind our need to release what's old to keep from picking it up again. Rev. Bill points out that this is a specific example of the process in a Practical Prayer, in which we identify what's not working, pivot to what we want instead, and then take steps to bring ourselves into the consciousness of the new experience. Caev is a rockstar in the truest sense - an artist who lives on the edge, embraces his contradictions, and creates from chaos. He's full of bright spots and dark flaws, and he wouldn't have it any other way. That tension is what fuels his art. After spending time away touring Europe, Caev returned to BFTC for one of the most honest conversations we've had yet. He talks about performing in Budapest and Bristol, where crowds embraced his sound in ways American audiences haven't - and why that experience has him planning a move overseas. He opens up about the reality of his label deal: getting signed, expecting support, and receiving nothing. He shares his vision for creating a defining sound for Boston that reflects the city's Afro-Caribbean roots and cultural mix. And in the rawest moment of the conversation, he talks about his addiction to weed and CHS (Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome). This is Caev UNFILTERED... You've set goals before and watched them fall apart six months later. Maybe you thought you had a solid foundation. Maybe you didn't. I'm pulling from 25 years of coaching experience and thousands of hours working with people just like you. What I've learned is this: you need a peaceful base before you chase any goal. Six domains of life that have to be balanced first, or everything crumbles. Think of it like an audio console. Get the levels wrong at the start, and everything downstream is a mess. Get them right, and you can reach for anything. Featured Story My daughter invited me to help with the audio at her church. I produce, I direct, I've got the background. So I stepped in. When you're the audio guy behind that big console, two things are true. You get all the blame. And if you lose control of the balance, you're in serious trouble. Every service starts the same way. You've got 8, 10, 12 people on stage. The very first thing I do is set the foundation - the input levels for every mic, every instrument. Get that wrong, and everything downstream falls apart. Feedback, hot mess, scary stuff. I started thinking about how this applies to life. What if we got the levels right from the beginning? What if we balanced everything before chasing the big goals? That's when the peaceful base concept clicked. Important Points Most people fail at goals because their foundation has cracks they don't even know about. Six domains need balance: time, body, mind, money, relationships, and spirit - in that order. Get these levels right first, and you can chase the biggest goals without upsetting your peaceful base. Memorable Quotes "Time is yours. It's limited in what you have. There's only so much time in the day, and everything you do will take time." "Financial security provides true choice. It's mobility in life." "Connections that are nurtured, not sacrificed." Scott's Three-Step Approach Take inventory of the six domains and identify where you're out of balance right now. Fix the small challenges first before setting any big goals for next year. Maintain that peaceful base as you grow so you don't mess up what you've got. He founded this channel with the goal of forming a community focused on creating a more intimate world, together. Now, he joins us to answer 18 questions on Jewish mysticism, including people's inherent divinity, tapping into the potential of modernity, and the perpetual experience of Har Sinai. Can humans do something that is against God's will? What do you think of when you think about Moshiach? Is the State of Israel part of the final redemption? What is the greatest challenge facing the world today? How has modernity changed Jewish mysticism? What differentiates Jewish mysticism from the mysticism of other religions? Does one need to be religious to study Jewish mysticism? Can mysticism be dangerous? How has Jewish mysticism affected your relationships with yourself and with others? What is a Jewish teaching that you always take with you?
