Maybe you've seen the gospel meme boldly proclaiming that there is “One Way” to God. So, what does the seeker think when there are three different churches on the same block? Or conversely, is there a possibility of doing too much “one way?” We'll look at unity in today's study. Galatians 2:6-10 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Big Idea: Which is better, unity or uniformity?1 Corinthians 12:12-26For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all given one Spirit to drink. Indeed, the body is not one part but many. If the foot should say, “Because I'm not a hand, I don't belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I'm not an eye, I don't belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted. And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don't need you!” Or again, the head can't say to the feet, “I don't need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that are weaker are indispensable. And those parts of the body that we consider less honorable, we clothe these with greater honor, and our unrespectable parts are treated with greater respect, which our respectable parts do not need. Instead, God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, so that there would be no division in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other. So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.I. Are spiritual gifts permanent?  II. Should we pray for (specific) spiritual gifts?III. If all gifts are important, why are some called “miracles”?Next Steps: Believe: I need Jesus to give me the gift of new life today.Become: I will honor someone else's gifts this week. Be Sent: I will use my gift to help someone who is suffering this week.Discussion Questions: What do you consider the most important spiritual need in the church right now?  Why?Have you taken a spiritual gift test more than once?  If so, did it change? How does seeing another person honored make you feel? How can you grow personally when others are being honored instead of you?How does it make you feel to give someone else praise for their efforts? How can the church grow stronger when individuals better understand their personal gifts?Pray for the Holy Spirit to help you use your spiritual gift this week.

On this August 15th episode, your host and Bible reading coach, Hunter, invites you to journey through the pages of Scripture together. Today's readings include Jeremiah chapters 18–20, Psalm 93, and John 17. As we reflect on God's word, Hunter reminds us that the Scriptures point our hearts to Jesus, the living Word, and reveal the deep love and blessings the Father lavishes upon us. We explore themes of God's transformative power, His call to repentance, and the unity, joy, and protection Jesus prays over His followers. The episode closes with a heartfelt blessing and a time of prayer—reminding us that we are deeply loved, and calling us to walk forward in God's joy and strength. Join us as we root ourselves in His love and truth, together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jesus prays a blessing over us. We see this kind of blessing prayer echoed throughout scripture—patriarchs blessing their children, conferring identity, inheritance, and place in the family of God. In John 17, Jesus is offering this kind of prayer, but it's a prayer that echoes into eternity, and it is not just for the twelve gathered there that night. It's for us. We are included in this blessing, this conferral of identity and destiny. We are told who we are in God's family, what our inheritance is as His children. What is spoken over us here is the message of life in the Son—the Gospel conferred as a gift, received freely. From this gift of Christ flow so many others: gifts of unity, gifts of protection, the gift of joy, the gift of God's Word, and supremely, the gift of Christ himself. Jesus prays, “Father, you have given me your name. Now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.” We are blessed with unity in Him. He says, “I have given them your word.” In His word, we find joy, our identity, the assurance that we are loved. He gives himself as a sacrifice for us, setting us apart, making us holy by his truth. And finally, he says, “I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.” The presence of Christ in us is our hope, our glory, our very life. This abiding blessing is the Christian life: God pouring out his love, his joy, his strength, his word, his presence—his life—into ours. So let your roots go down deep into the love of God. May you discover, each day, how wide, how long, how high, how deep is Christ's love for you. May you experience the fullness of this life and power, made complete in Him. This is the prayer for my soul. This is the prayer for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And this is the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Jesus is my shepherd, you have called me by my name into the life of the beloved. Here in the stillness, I remember that I am not alone. I belong to you and to the great communion of saints and sinners held together in your love. Remind me, Lord, that every breath is grace, every encounter is a chance to give what I have received, mercy without measure. When I forget who I am, when I lose my way, lead me again to still waters. Restore my soul, renew my hope. Reroute me in the joy of simply being yours. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Presented by Julie Busteed I've been talking about the importance of unity—not just with fellow believers, but also with our coworkers. Today's workplace looks different than it used to. Some people work remotely, some in the office, and others split their time between both. Each setup has its benefits, but they also come with unique challenges—especially when it comes to staying connected. How do we stay on the same page and remain unified in our purpose and mission when we're not all in the same physical space? It takes intentional effort. Hopefully, your workplace provides tools like messaging apps or video conferencing to help you communicate regularly. But staying connected may also mean being more proactive—since those informal “water cooler” conversations don't happen as naturally. Here are a few suggestions for maintaining unity in a diverse working environment: Practice overcommunication. Even in in-person settings, this is often overlooked. Many times, I think I've communicated clearly, only to realize later it wasn't understood as intended. When you have a conversation—whether by phone or video—follow up with an email to summarize key points. And before you hit send on any message, re-read it. What seems clear to you may need a little fine-tuning for someone else to fully grasp. Schedule regular video check-ins. Whether it's with your whole team or one-on-one, set up consistent meetings. These touchpoints help move projects forward, provide space for clarification, and keep relationships strong. If you can occasionally meet in person, even better. Build trust and personal connections. Social connection matters. Not just for morale but for productivity too. When people trust each other and feel valued, they collaborate better and bring fresh, creative ideas to the table. Ultimately, unity comes when everyone understands the goal and the reason behind it. A shared sense of purpose fuels effective teamwork. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:18). And let's not forget: In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, charity.

Artist and author Maurice Sendak was able to achieve significant and enduring success in art and children's literature during his lifetime. But what secrets did he had to keep from his family, publishers, parents, librarians, and readers as a gay, Jewish man negotiating the field of children's literature?   Sendak wrote and illustrated books that nurtured children and adults alike. Winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are, in 1970 Sendak became the first American illustrator to receive the international Hans Christian Anderson Award, given in recognition of his entire body of work. Dr. Rak here. When I first began to understand the connection between food and health, I was already a doctor. I had written prescriptions, treated chronic conditions, and checked every box our system told me to check. But I couldn't shake the feeling that something essential was missing—that we were managing disease, not healing people. And then I found doctors like Michael Klaper, who I'm so delighted to welcome to The Feast. Dr. Klaper has been living and teaching the truth about food as medicine for over 40 years. Long before lifestyle medicine had a name, he was walking away from the pill-for-every-ill model and helping patients heal through plants, movement, and compassion. He's also now on a mission to do what our medical schools never did: teach future doctors the tools that actually heal. In our conversation today we discuss: The moment that changed everything in his medical practice Why most doctors are still unknowingly keeping their patients sick His take on GLP-1 drugs, the carnivore diet, fasting, and the longevity hype And the one medical myth that still drives him crazy Underscoring all of this, we talk about what it means to practice medicine with integrity and soul. What it means to see the patient in front of you not as a case to manage… but as a person to support. If you've ever felt like there has to be a better way to do healthcare, this conversation is for you. And hey—if you make it to the end of the episode, or even just this note—I just want to say thank you. I don't take your time or presence here for granted. If the episode moved you or made you think, I'd love if you left a quick review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. It helps others find The Health Feast and be part of this bigger conversation. Presented by Julie Busteed I recently read a 2021 Harvard Business Review article about high performing teams. The article reported “disagreements with people whose opinions or ideas differ from our own are common in the workplace. When handled appropriately, disagreements lead to better results—but they are not usually viewed that way.”[1] So true! Different ideas or ways of doing things can lead to better results, but so often the response is defensive or territorial, not willing to listen or change. But if handled in the right way, disagreements can lead to a great outcome. An example is the disagreement between the Apostle Paul and Barnabas and their disagreement on who should accompany them on their second missionary journey. John Mark accompanied Paul and Barnabas on their first journey as a helper (Act 13:5). It was quite the journey of incredible growth for the church but also much persecution. Sometime later, Paul suggested to Barnabas to visit the churches they had planted. Barnabas wanted to bring John Mark with them again on this journey, but Paul disagreed because John Mark had not continued with them in the work on their first journey (Acts 15:38). In fact, it's written that they had a sharp disagreement, and it was so intense they could not come to an agreement at that time, which resulted in Paul taking Silas with him and Barnabas brought John Mark on a separate missionary journey. But this is not the end of the story. Paul, when he was in Rome, wrote to the Colossians and in Philemon—mentions John Mark sends his greetings along with others. John Mark is with Paul in Rome. And in Second Timothy Paul writes: Get (John) Mark and bring him with you for he is very useful to me for ministry (2 Timothy 4:11). Don't you love that? It's estimated 15 plus years have passed since that first journey when John Mark left them. And now, with time, space, maturity, and perspective, there's evidence of reconciliation and working together for the purpose of proclaiming the gospel. Paul and Barnabas had a different view of how to conduct the second journey. And so that second journey did not continue on as originally planned, but in the end, two teams went out to encourage the churches and preach Christ to the unreached. A disagreement ended with two different ways of moving forward. Unity was evident—both wanted to encourage and spread the good news. The methods were different, but the mission—the goal—was the same. --- [1] Harvard Business Review High-Performing Teams Start with a Culture of Shared Values by Greg Satell and Cathy Winschitl, May 11. 2021, https://hbr.org/2021/05/high-performing-teams-start-with-a-culture-of-shared-values

Presented by Julie Busteed The Psalmist writes: How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity (Psalm 133:1)! How good and pleasant it is to be in unity with others. But that's not always how life works—especially at our jobs. Just as unity is important in your relationship with Christ and fellow believers, it's also important in your workplace. Teams that have a common and shared goal will work together to reach the goal. A Teamraderie article cites unity at work is important because research shows approximately 70% of employees believe poor collaboration is decreasing their productivity.[1] If you're concerned about productivity and the bottom line, that's a lot of unproductive time spent because of disunity or poor collaboration. The article goes on to report nearly two-thirds of the respondents (64%) claim poor collaboration is costing them at least three hours per week in productivity, with 20% claiming they are wasting as many as six hours per week. If you are a manager or an owner or project leader, then communicating the goal and purpose clearly is a priority. Taking time and effort to make sure you listen and understand obstacles and concerns is important. Then get that message across to ensure everyone is on the same page with the mission of the project or the company. It takes time and energy to do this, but the resulting benefits should prove to be worth it. An encouraging environment with good collaboration starts with being open to others' concerns, communicating ideas and processes clearly, and showing respect. Even if you're not the manager or in charge, your respectful attitude and willingness to listen can go a long way in building unity within the workplace. How do you handle disagreements though? A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger (Proverbs 15:1). A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel (Proverbs 15:18). Being gentle and patient in response to a disagreement will help navigate the conversation. Ask questions if you are not clear on something. Remain calm and listen to what's being said as opposed to what your response will be. Give yourself time to respond. It's okay to say, “I need to think about this,” or “Let me give it some thought, and I'll get back to you.” This shows you're taking the other person seriously and considering their perspective. It doesn't mean you have to agree just to avoid conflict—that's not helpful either. But it also means not dismissing his or her ideas right away. Remember the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. --- [1] Teamraderie Editorial Team. (2024, August 9). A Guide to Achieving Unity in the Workplace. Presented by Julie Busteed How can you work together with others but have so many differences? The Apostle Paul gives a great example in 1 Corinthians 12 of how you and I are each created differently but are also united in Christ. Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). This is such a clear image of what the body of Christ is and how the church is to work together. Paul goes on to explain in more detail. For example, the eye doesn't make up the whole body, and it can't say to the hand that it doesn't need it. He says God has put the body together that there should be no division in the body—all parts should have equal concern for one another. If one part suffers, all parts suffer, and if one part is honored, every part rejoices. I know it's an overused phrase, but we are better together—when we share the same purpose and goal. The early church is a beautiful example of this. Luke records in chapter 2 the unity this body of believers experienced. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved (Acts 2:42-47). The unity and love between the early Christians were evident to all. The way they treated one another, prayed for one another, enjoyed meals together, and worshipped God was a witness to others of the gospel of Christ. And because of this, the Lord increased their numbers. More people were drawn to Christ because of the evident love between the believers. What an encouragement to me. How can you and I show this love and unity? I think the same way the early church did. We can care for others, pray with and for others, worship together, and so much more. Even at work we can show this kind of unity, by caring for our coworkers and praying for them.

Born with a serious eye condition, doctors told her she should never play football. She came into the recent Euros with questions over her ability to fill the gloves of recently retired Mary Earps. To add to that, she revealed her grandfather had died just days before the biggest tournament of her life began earlier this summer. Despite this, Hannah had an extraordinary tournament, particularly in those agonising penalty shootouts. She joins Nuala McGovern to chat all about it. In June this year in Pakistan, Bano Bibi, a mother of five, and Ehsanullah Samalani, a father of three, were accused of having an affair and were shot - on the orders of a tribal leader, according to police. The event caused outrage, not just because it was another so-called ‘honour killing', but because the authorities only took action after a video of the shootings went viral, more than six weeks later. Nuala is joined by Azadeh Moshiri, Pakistan Correspondent for BBC News, and Sheema Kermani, a woman's rights activist, dancer and theatre director who has been working with women in rural and marginalised communities for 50 years. Writer and director Celine Song's semi-autobiographical debut Past Lives earned her two Oscar nominations and a host of other accolades when it was released in 2023. She talks to Nuala about her second film, Materialists, a romantic dramedy starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, and how it was inspired by her own time working as a matchmaker for high-net-worth individuals in New York. And they don't always have a positive experience, with 30% having reported sexual assault at work and 64% saying men were paid more for the same role. So, as the industry faces a recruitment crisis, how could it evolve to become a safer and fairer place to work and encourage more women into construction? Nuala explores the problems and the opportunities with Faye Allen, author of Building Women, and Dr Carol Massay of Unity for Construction, who've both worked in the industry for more than 30 years. Have you ever used your giving to steer decisions or send a message? It might seem harmless—or even wise—to designate your gift to specific ministries or withhold it when you disagree with leadership. But when our generosity becomes a tool for control, we've crossed a line. In this episode, we'll explore the subtle danger of using giving as leverage—and discover a better way rooted in surrender and trust.A Hidden Temptation in Church GivingLet's be honest—no one likes the word control when it's pointed at them. But in church life, this temptation surfaces more often than we'd like to admit. It might look like this:Giving only to certain ministries because you don't trust how the church allocates general funds.Withholding your giving when a leadership decision—like a staffing change or budget shift—doesn't sit well with you.Designating gifts to specific areas, not out of passion, but as a form of protest. On the surface, it may look like good financial stewardship. But beneath the surface, it's often an attempt to say, “I want things to go my way, and I'll use my money to make that happen.”That's not generosity. That's leverage. And Scripture warns us against it.The Corban Example: A Heart Check from JesusIn Mark 7, Jesus confronts the Pharisees for misusing a practice called Corban—a method of dedicating money or resources to God. While it sounded spiritual, the religious leaders were using it to dodge their responsibility to care for aging parents. As GotQuestions.org explains:“The Pharisees took a legitimate Corban offering and used it in an illegitimate and devious way to defraud their parents…Jesus tells the Pharisees that their misuse of Corban was an evil rationale to avoid doing what they should.”It wasn't the gift itself that Jesus condemned—it was the motive behind it.In the same way, when we give to maintain control or push our preferences, we're following the spirit of Corban. Even if our reasons sound righteous, they can mask a deeper issue: an unwillingness to surrender. From Leverage to Surrender: The Biblical CallThe Bible offers a better vision.Psalm 24:1 reminds us,“The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.”That includes our finances. We don't give to direct the church. We give because God owns it all—and calls us to steward it faithfully.Consider the example in Acts 4. Believers sold land and possessions, then laid the proceeds at the apostles' feet. No strings attached. No demands were made about how it was to be used. Just trust, unity, and wholehearted surrender.Of course, that doesn't mean churches shouldn't be transparent or held accountable. Scripture calls leaders to wise and faithful stewardship. But giving with strings isn't about accountability—it's about control. And control is the opposite of trust. What's Driving Your Generosity?Ask yourself: What's driving my giving? Is it love for God?Faith in His provision?Worship and gratitude?Or is it something else?Preference?Power?Payback? When giving becomes conditional, it's no longer cheerful—it's contractual. We treat God's work like a business deal instead of a spiritual act of worship. But when we let go of control, something beautiful happens: we find peace. We no longer feel the pressure to manage every church decision. We can give freely, knowing God is at work—even when His ways don't align with our expectations.Moving Forward in Trust and GraceIf you realize that control has been influencing your giving, here are three steps to take:1. Confess it to the Lord. God is gracious and patient. Ask Him to realign your heart with His and help you give from a place of surrender.2. Release your preferences. You don't have to stop asking questions or seeking transparency. But your generosity shouldn't be tied to your personal comfort or preferences.3. Give with trust. Trust God's ability to work through imperfect people. Trust that when you give with the right heart, your gift brings Him glory.Because when we give to control, we place ourselves at the center. But when we give in faith, we put God at the center—where He belongs.A Resource for the JourneyWant to go deeper into the heart behind generosity? He and his wife are behind on their bills, but we know they also spend on partying and things like marijuana. Broadcasts – Christian Working Woman

Presented by Julie Busteed In a society when there is so much discord and argument and division, unity is a rare thing. As a Christ-follower, why do we need to have unity? Jesus gives us this reason: My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me (John 17:20-23). Being unified in Christ and with the body of Christ is a powerful witness to the world of God's love. As Christians, our unity in Christ and with other Christians is essential. But being united doesn't mean we are all the same. We are uniquely created with different gifts and talents. And yet united! I love this saying: In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, charity. Christians need to be of the same mind on the core beliefs—things that matter—that are essential. In church we often recite or read the Apostles Creed, which states some core beliefs of faith: God is the creator. Jesus is his only son, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, was crucified, died and buried. On third day, he rose again and sits at the right hand of God, and he will come to judge the world. I'm summarizing here, but you get the idea. For Christians, these are non-negotiable beliefs. It doesn't have anything to do with the worship music, or how the service should be ordered, or what we should wear to church, or any of those other things. Some of those things are important, but they are more preferences—so there's liberty—or freedom in the “non-essential” things. We may prefer a certain worship style and find other worship styles unsettling, but if those core beliefs are shared, then there's freedom to worship. And above all, there's charity—love! You and I need to make room for other people's preferences. It doesn't have to be done exactly our way. God created us uniquely and as a result there are unique ways to worship and serve him.

Unity is the spiritual force at the heart of God's kingdom, made possible by the cross. In this piercing message, Pastor Sheryl Brady reminds us: unity isn't optional in the kingdom; it's essential. The cross is the centerpiece of our faith. It tears down every wall, breaks every stronghold, and launches an unstoppable connection to God through the Holy Spirit. Before going to the cross, Jesus' final instructions for His church and His family centered on love and unity. His last prayer was that we would be one. Pastor Brady challenges us to carry that same spirit, to fight for one another, stand together, and genuinely care for our neighbors. Unity, she explains, is the precious anointing that invites God's commanded blessing. Unity requires commitment, not just proximity. Where there is true unity, there is divine favor that makes rich and adds no sorrow. Watch now to learn how to be a keeper of unity and receive strength for your journey.
