Last month, Joe brought his middle school students to the FIRST LEGO League robotics competition in Valmiera and took the opportunity to interview founders Edgars Skruodis and Anna Skroude about their experience starting and running the program as well as student and teacher participants about their experiences during the weekend. This episode is part of a new series exploring some of the interesting work that people throughout Latvia are doing that might escape the attention of news camera but is having an impact nonetheless. Full disclosure: Joe Horgan is a board member of FLL Latvija. Merry Christmas from Latvia Weekly! Join regular host Joe Horgan and special guest hosts Mārtiņš Enģelis, editor of the "Capital R" blog and Nikita Andreev, lecturer at the University of Latvia Faculty of Theology, as they discuss the peculiarities of Christmas in Latvia and how traditions differ among the country's subcultures and from Christmas elsewhere in the world. Topics include grey peas, the Home Alone series, fortune telling, and a lot more! Cozy in by the fireplace and settle in for a festive discussion about holidays.
Otto Tabuns is back from his trip to America to help co-host Joe Horgan unravel an international web of bribery and corruption involving Rīga's public transit authority and firms in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Aside from our regular "This Week in Latvian History" and "Otto-correct" segments, other topics include a possible breakthrough in the government building talks, major happenings throughout Europe, and snow here in southern Latvia. It's finally beginning to look a lot like Christmas! The Philadelphia Eagles made it look easy with their 34-7 win against the Arizona Cardinals. Our Philly-diehard buddy Joe Horgan subs in for little bro GT as we discuss why this was Carson Wentz's best game as a pro (01:45). What's different about this Eagles team (05:15). The "Ray Didinger Impact Play of the Game" (07:45). Can we finally admit Doug Pederson is at least not a bad coach (10:00)? And we need to appreciate how good Jordan Hicks is (13:55). We then revisit if the Eagles are just as good as any team in the NFC with our ridiculously early season prediction (15:15), why Wentz is better than Donovan McNabb at the same point in their career (16:00), and what it will take for Philly to truly believe (18:15).
