There are celebrations all around for Northlands Primary School as their team, Smooth Sailors, achieved top honours at the Open Africa Championship (OAC) of the First Lego League (FLL). The league was held from 7 to 9 May 2025 in Cape Town and teams from 42 countries were in attendance. Out of the 106 teams who were invited, globally, the Smooth Sailors from Northlands Primary School were the highest-ranked SA team. They earned second place in the “Core Values” category. Principal Mr Alistair Naidu shared praise for the team's amazing achievement, saying: “Smooth Sailors have not only made us proud as a school, but also as a country. Their recognition at an international level speaks volumes of their dedication, humility, and ability to lead with purpose. This is the kind of global excellence we are cultivating at Northlands.” Team lead and coach Mr. Steven Kent shared that the First Lego League was more than just coding. “It's a gateway to lifelong learning. We're building a generation that is curious, empathetic, and eager to solve real-world challenges. Smooth Sailors have shown that South African youth can compete with the world's best and excel,” said the proud coach.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Wednesday, Jan. 24  T-Mobile investments in the Mountain State make a striking impact. A $2.5M grant from NASA will expand a STEM program at Fairmont State. And check out the incentives for filming in #YesWV… on today's daily304. #1 – From T-MOBILE – During a recent press event, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and T-Mobile executive Edwige Robinson, highlighted the impact of a $200 million investment from T-Mobile in the Mountain State. The investment has had a striking impact on the citizens and businesses of West Virginia. One recent study showed a 66 percent increase in median download speeds in West Virginia from 2022 to 2023 alone.  Through a merger with Sprint in 2020, T-Mobile has made a massive commitment to improve Internet connectivity and mobile service for rural and small-town America. In 2021, T-Mobile doubled down on its commitment to West Virginia when it finalized its acquisition of Shentel Wireless, one of the primary mobile service providers in West Virginia.  Since then, the Un-carrier has invested an additional $200 million to upgrade 5G service via 377 new towers and upgrades to 121 existing towers. This award was a renewal of the grant for the operation of the ERC. The ERC started 20 years ago with one worker. The program now includes four full-time employees, a college intern and four AmeriCorps members, Fairmont State Professor Dr. Deb Hemler said. Over time, the program's focus has shifted from teachers to the students, with an emphasis on First Lego League and VEX Robotics competitions. Hemler said the program plans to expand to drone competitions next. The ERC also operates a loan-and-learn kit program for regional STEM classrooms. Breaking Barriers and Empowering Girls in Engineering - Heidi Balestrieri, Director of Engineering at Sentry Equipment

Women have made tremendous strides in engineering over the last few decades. Rising both in numbers and in leadership roles, girls now have more women to look up to in STEM fields than ever before. Representation is crucial. When young girls dream about their future, remember this phrase:If they can see it, they can be it.No one knows this better than Heidi Balestrieri. In college, she was the lone girl in a class of 50 mechanical engineering graduates. When she entered the workforce, the gender gap was even more apparent. But Heidi pursued her passions and rose to become Director of Engineering at Sentry Equipment. For her work in manufacturing and STEM outreach, she was the recipient of a Manufacturing Institute Women MAKE award.Heidi joins us for a discussion around women in engineering: how far we've come, how far we need to go, and what individuals, schools and businesses can do to create a world where every girl feels empowered to pursue a career in STEM.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Engineers are problem solvers: It's not just math and science. Engineering is all about solving problems, and that involves a much wider skillset. Schools can incorporate problem solving into STEM-related activities that teach even young kids how to think like an engineer. But remember, failure is part of the process. Heidi notes that many young girls seek perfection and are afraid to fail, so we must encourage trial and error as part of the problem-solving process.Give interns a real engineering project, and get a long-term employee: Often, engineering interns are assigned clerical work that doesn't challenge them or give them a sense for what a true engineering career can be like. Heidi and Sentry Equipment have given engineering students real engineering projects, real autonomy, and real responsibility, and in turn have seen those interns come back for full-time employment after graduation.Representation + community are needed for women in engineering: Representation starts young: engineering badge days in Girl Scouts and coaching First Lego League teams are two great examples Heidi shares. It continues into later school years, where companies need to have diverse representation at STEM outreach days and career fairs. Finally, women need community in STEM fields, whether at an inclusive company or through organizations like the Society of Women Engineers. Individuals also need their personal board of directors, that group of mentors that can pour into an emerging engineer and help her on her career path.ResourcesLearn more about organizations featured in this episode:Sentry EquipmentManufacturing Institute Women MAKEGirl Scouts STEM badgesFIRST Lego LeagueConnect with Heidi on LinkedIn.View episode page: https://techedpodcast.com/balestrieri/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

In recent years, he has taught robotics to middle and high school students, and served as a judge in the World Robot Olympics and First Lego League competitions. He is now retired in Boynton Beach, but volunteers to teach computer programming to high school students through a Microsoft-sponsored charity.
