Hi everyone! Welcome back to CLIMATE QUEENS and our second installment of our collaboration with Front Line Defenders. This month we are joined by chemist, environmental rights activist and human rights defender Lay Peng Pua. China banned plastic waste imports in 2018, with that recycling companies moved to Malaysia making this beautiful country the number one international dumping site for OUR plastic waste. When Lay Peng moved back to her hometown of Jenjarom she saw first hand the devastating impact that the plastic "recycling" industry was having on her local community in Malaysia, with over 40 illegal plastic factories emitting toxic gases and polluting the local rivers and waterways making people in the community very sick. By now we are all too familiar with our global plastic waste problem, however did you know that the plastic waste of over 19 countries has been found in Malaysia? Do we really know what happens to our plastic waste when we throw it away? As we hear from Lay Peng, chances are it's ending up in her country!  Join our conversation with Lay Peng to hear the story of how our consumption and disposal of plastic waste is destroying her community, and how she is fighting back. Lay Peng also provides suggestions as to how we can tackle this growing plastic waste issue even during a global pandemic! Several candidates for the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine have entered clinical trials, and the results are eagerly anticipated. While scientists envision a global vaccine that will benefit the world’s population, in reality, political and economic factors will determine which country gets to vaccinate its citizens against COVID-19. Where does that leave Malaysia? Do we have the vaccine production capacity to mass manufacture vaccines? In the second episode of this two-part segment, we continue our conversation with Azrul Mohd Khalib, CEO, Galen Centre for Health & Social Policy, and Prof Sibrandes Poppema, TS Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Professor, who specialises in immunopathology. Prof Poppema is also President Emeritus of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, and Member of the Board of Sunway University, Malaysia. Listen to Part 1 here.

The race to develop a vaccine for COVID-19 is reminiscent of the race to the moon during the Cold War in the 1960s. The country that gets there first, gets to vaccinate its population first, and thus, emerges the victor. Where does that leave Malaysia? Do we have the capacity for vaccine R&D, as well as production? How does our lack of capacity pose a threat to our health security? In the first episode of a two-part segment, we speak to Azrul Mohd Khalib, CEO, Galen Centre for Health & Social Policy, and Prof Sibrandes Poppema, TS Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Professor, who specialises in immunopathology. Selamat Hari Malaysia. As Malaysians, we know that Malaya was free from the British occupation in 1957. But do many of us realise the actual formation of Malaysia, consisting of Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak, was only formalised in 1963. Which makes our country only 55 years old. Today, Huda asks the question - what makes us Malaysians? How much do we really know about Malaysia? Do we really recognise and think of our Sabah and Sarawak brethren as part of us? On this day, let's explore what makes us Malaysians.
