Let's clear something up right away: having a mental health condition doesn't automatically put your security clearance on life support. Despite what your buddy's cousin's former coworker swears happened to "a guy he knew," the government isn't out here revoking clearances simply because someone sought therapy, took medication, or admitted they weren't feeling their best. One of the biggest myths in the cleared community is that getting mental health treatment is somehow worse than ignoring a problem and hoping it magically disappears. Spoiler alert: it isn't. Federal adjudicators care far more about judgment, reliability, and trustworthiness than they do about whether you've had a conversation with a therapist. Seeking treatment is often viewed as a sign of good judgment, not a red flag. John Berry and Lindy Kyzer frequently collaborate to demystify complex security clearance and federal employment laws. Africa once again has an Ebola outbreak. At this point, it is centered in the so-called Greak Lakes region, with the largest number of cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Uganda has also seen several cases. Sadly this is not new news. But it takes place in the context of a weakened World Health Organization, with the US withdrawal, and a stark memory of the Covid outbreaks. It also is exacerbated by the shuttering of USAID and severe cuts in health funding from the Trump Administration. The United States is insisting that any American that tests positive for the virus would be treated outside of the country, provoking protests in East Africa such as in Kenya. So is the Ebola outbreak a potential pandemic? What has been the most effective means to treat these kinds of outbreaks. And how does it influence the current intense discourses about health care delivery and wellness in the United States. Send us Fan MailImagine a life form identical to your own, only backwards.At first, it would look normal. But just like when you try to use a mirror to read text on a page, it doesn't quite translate. For some reason, all of the DNA of life on Earth is right-handed. The double helix of DNA that codes for all life on the planet spirals to the right – a quality called chirality. But, in theory, scientists could build cells based on DNA that spirals to the left. These mirror cells could defy some of the rules of biology. While it's not clear how they might be useful, several labs sought to examine the possibility. Some of the U.S. scientists who took a look were startled by the implications and put together a team of 35 experts who studied the risks.Mirror bacteria, in particular, scared them. Like an invasive plant that local animals don't recognize as potential food, mirror bacteria could evade the immune systems of animals and people and cause life-threatening infections, they reported. They could wreak havoc on crops and even on entire ecosystems. The experts' December 2024 report recommended halting all work on mirror cells.In this One World, One Health episode, one member of that committee, Dr. Jassi Pannu, explains some of what the team found. Dr. Pannu is a Senior Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Why Data Governance Is the Key to AI Biosecurity, with Jassi Pannu and Doni Bloomfield Alan Rozenshtein, research director at Lawfare, spoke with Jassi Pannu, assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, and Doni Bloomfield, associate professor of law at Fordham Law School, about their proposed framework for governing biological data to reduce AI-enabled biosecurity risks. The conversation covered the origins of the proposal in the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Asilomar conference on recombinant DNA; the distinction between general-purpose AI models and biology-specific foundation models like genomic language models; the biosecurity threats posed by AI, including uplift of novice actors and raising the ceiling of expert capabilities; the proposed biosecurity data levels (BDL 0-4) framework and how it draws on precedents from biosafety levels and genetic privacy regulation; the challenge of capabilities-based rather than pathogen-based data classification; the institutional and regulatory mechanisms for enforcement, including the role of NIH grant conditions and a proposed mandatory federal regime; international collaboration and the importance of U.S. leadership given that most high-tier data is generated domestically; the relationship between the proposal and open-source biological AI development; and the offense-defense imbalance in biosecurity and the case for mandatory gene synthesis screening. Guests John-Martin Lowe, PhD John-Martin Lowe, PhD, is the director of the Global Center for Health Security, assistant vice chancellor for health security training and education, and professor of Environmental, Agricultural and Occupational Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. At the University of Nebraska Medical Center, he leads research and training initiatives to advance environmental risk assessment and infection control for high consequence pathogens. As a virologist and environmental exposure scientist, Dr. Lowe has worked extensively throughout the U.S., Africa, Asia and Europe as an educator, researcher, and in health emergency risk management related to infectious disease, infection control and emergency response. As a professor of environmental and occupational health, his expertise focuses on infectious disease risk assessment and management of risk for clinical, community and industrial environments. Dr. Lowe also has extensive experience in emerging pathogens and health security. He is co-PI for the U.S. National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center, established an international network for emerging infectious diseases, and served lead investigator for a multi-country bio-surveillance network in Africa. He has experience in a broad range of health security topics from surveillance, public health response and clinical response to health emergencies. Dr. Lowe led successful COVID-19 efforts in 2020 at the National Quarantine Unit and Nebraska Biocontainment Unit to provide monitoring and care for repatriated U.S. citizens exposed to and infected with SARS Coronavirus 2. He also led early and continued efforts to characterize the transmission dynamics of SARS Coronavirus 2 which were presented to in a joint meeting hosted by the Academy of Medicine and American Public Health Association on April 15, 2020. Dr. Aneesh Mehta, MD, FIDSA, FAST Aneesh Mehta is a Professor of Medicine and of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine, and also serves as the Chief of Infectious Diseases Services and Assistant Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases at Emory University Hospital. He is a board-certified infectious diseases physician, who received an MD from the University of Oklahoma and completed Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases training at Emory University. Aneesh has been one of the core physicians of the Emory Serious Communicable Diseases Unit (SCDU) since 2009. He was admitted physician for Emory's first patient with Ebola Virus Disease and was highly involved in care of the four patients with EVD, one patient with Lassa Fever, and several PUIs cared for by the Emory SCDU. During the Ebola activation, Aneesh was involved in all aspects of unit management, patient care, laboratory handling, and research. Aneesh is a co-Principal Investigator at NETEC. He also has been involved in development of the Special Pathogens Research Network Biorepository and evaluation of Medical Countermeasures. Vikramjit Mukherjee, MD, FRCP (Edin) Vikramjit Mukherjee is an intensive care physician who serves as the Chief of Critical Care at NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue. He also is the Chief of Bellevue's Special Pathogens Program. Dr. Mukherjee is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Mukherjee serves as co-Principal Investigator for NETEC, as a steering committee member for the National Special Pathogens System of Care, and as an executive member of the Task Force for Mass Critical Care. His research interests include special pathogen preparedness and mass critical care. Vikramjit Mukherjee completed his medical training at Armed Forces Medical College, India, before arriving in the United States. Here, he completed his residency and chief residency at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center and fellowship and chief fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at New York University Medical Center. Following completion of training in 2015, he joined faculty in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Scammers behind the Manage My Health security breach could attempt to contact affected customers. Earlier this month, the patient portal became aware more than 127-thousand users' health records had been compromised in an attack last year. Netsafe chief online safety officer Sean Lyons told Ryan Bridge that the cybercriminals could impersonate the company or other agencies - in what's known as a recovery scam. He says they could say they work for Manage My Heath or say they could help people secure information. He says it's a tried and tested path for scammers. Keizo Takemi, recent Japan Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare (September 2023-October 2024), shares his personal story that took him to Taiwan, CNN/Japan, the Diet, Harvard, back to the Diet, and recently into the cabinet of then Prime Minister Kishida. Along the way he became a leading force in charting Japan's approach to global health. As Minister he put a spotlight on the thousands of single, isolated elderly who die alone in Japan, unnoticed for days. Though expensive, wearable digital technologies can help connect the elderly better to community health services. Covid-19 exposed the lack of digitalized data and the need for a national mechanism to integrate patient and hospital data. That became a priority for him as Minister, as well as the creation of the Japan Institute of Health Security, a merger that promises far greater capabilities in preparing for and responding to dangerous outbreaks. By 2035, Japan will have 10 million citizens above 85 years of age. "Speedy aging" is raising demands for different care, at considerable expense. Achieving a stable number of skilled caregivers requires better wages and work conditions, and the entry of far more migrants into the workforce. Japan's biopharmaceutical industry requires a wholistic industrial policy. That sector is hollowing out, as Takeda and Astellas locate their operations in the United States.

On May 20th, after years of negotiation, World Health Organization member states adopted the Pandemic Agreement — the first international treaty focused on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. Developed in response to the shortcomings revealed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the agreement emphasizes equitable access to vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments, and promotes international cooperation in disease surveillance and health system strengthening. But will this brand-new agreement live up to its potential? And what role might the United States' decision to remain on the sidelines — and not become a party to the agreement — play in how it is adopted and implemented? Joining me to discuss these questions and more is Alexandra Phelan, Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Senior Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. We begin by examining how the deficiencies in the global response to COVID-19 revealed the need for such a treaty in the first place, before having a longer conversation about what the agreement actually obliges of its signatories — and what factors will determine whether or not it works as intended. Yet another fictional health simulation was conducted in Brussels, Belgium on October 23, 2022, that simulated a deadly respiratory virus that was unleashed upon the world and disproportionately impacted children. The event was organized by the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, the World Health Organization, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Again. Just like the other simulations Johns Hopkins has held, this one called for draconian policies to be implemented in the name of “global health”, and for a “Pandemic Corps” to be formed and installed worldwide in order to be ready for the next outbreak. This wasn't the only simulation that happened recently.
