"Oh, I can still learn something from scratch, totally different from what I do in my world. I find that is so rejuvenating. It makes you feel good!" This week's podcast guest is Gladys Poorte. Her work for many people appears to be very otherworldly and fantastical, maybe even sci-fi inspired, but in fact, it is all based on real-life objects and 3D models that she creates in her studio to draw and paint from while controlling the light and mood to ultimately create space and depth. The inspiration often comes from observing, processing, and reacting to real-life events that have happened in the world, and concerns about the future. I’m very impressed with Gladys' willingness to keep pushing herself to learn new skills and gain knowledge to enhance and evolve her artwork over time. Noodkreten waren er al maanden vanuit het overvolle vluchtelingenkamp Moria, dat sinds het begin van de coronacrisis in lockdown was. Het laatste beetje bewegingsvrijheid was de bewoners ontnomen en de dreiging van de oplopende coronabesmettingen in het kamp zorgde voor veel spanningen. Naar hulpverleners die riepen om de evacuatie van het kamp werd niet geluisterd. En dan nu: brand. Matthias voor de Poorte besloot gisteravond meteen naar het kamp toe te gaan toen hij hoorde dat er brand was uitgebroken. In de podcast beschrijft hij wat hij aantrof. Mensen waren ook opgelucht, zegt hij, omdat het kamp er nu niet meer is. Maar wat er dan nu met de vluchtelingen moet gebeuren is de vraag. Karin Arendsen, coördinator bij Stichting Bootvluchteling, durft in ieder geval niet meer op steun van de Griekse regering of de EU te rekenen, vertelt ze. Daarvoor is er de laatste jaren te veel gebeurd. Of eigenlijk: te weinig.
