Episode 194 is final episode from our mini-SXSW series, featuring our buds Souls Extolled of Austin, TX. They are a psychedelic rock trio who describe their sound as “Ozzy having a love child with Rancid on acid.” Singer/songwriter Zach Black was kind enough to let us stay at his place while we were in town. This is technically Souls Extolled third time on the show but it was our first time doing in an interview in person. We sat down at the bar after their set at Hole In The Wall ATX and talked about everything the band has been up to since we last met in NYC. Since their national tour in 2022, the guys have focused on writing and recording another record as well as playing shows around Texas. So we talked a lot about that and the general state of the music scene in Austin. spotify -- Part-Time Rockstar Fest is 6/3/23 at Fish Head Cantina in Baltimore, MD. -- Podcast merch is available on Shopify. Donald Trump was indicted yesterday for misuse of campaign funds to pay hush money to porn star Stromy Daniels. He is the first former U.S. president to ever be charged with a crime. Trump's indictment comes less than a week after he launched his presidential campaign with a large rally and speech in Waco, TX. Waco was the site of the 1993 raid of the militant Branch Davidian religious compound that led to the deaths of nearly 80 people. Waco has been a rallying cry for white supremacists and the extreme right ever since. 38 migrants were killed and 27 seriously injured in a fire at a Mexican detention center in Ciudad Juarez. The continued unjust and cruel immigration policies in the U.S. - the “Remain in Mexico” policy, for example - helped create the conditions for the deaths. Will Bunch was dead on: "I wonder how much of the American downplaying of this nightmare in Ciudad Juárez is willful ignorance on our part — a refusal to confront our own shameful role in this episode. That's because the reason that refugees are overrunning the Mexican city — some estimates place the number at 20,000 — is that U.S. policy is forcing these migrants to stay south of the American border, their actual goal." According to a new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation, up to about 15 million people are now at risk of losing health insurance as COVID era rules that expand Medicaid and CHIP benefits are rolled back. A new study in the journal Nature, projects that deep water current around Antarctica could slow by 40% by 2050 if the current trajectory of climate change is not dramatically altered. A disrupted current could dramatically affect the climate, the flow of fresh water and oxygen, and the circulation of nutrients necessary to sustain marine life. Some first-graders in Waukesha, Wisconsin won't be singing “Rainbowland,” by Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton. They were supposed to sing the song about acceptance, coming together, and loving one another in their spring concert. Why? Because school administrators concluded that the song violated the district's new “Controversial Issues in the Classroom,” policy initiated by a new right-wing dominated school board. This week's horrific mass school shooting in Nashville is being used by right-wing politicians and pundits to stoke anti-trans hate. New reporting by Maddie Hanna in the Philadelphia Inquirer shows that Paul Martino's PAC, Back to School USA, is gearing up for the culture war. The PAC's website says it will be “taking the fight directly to the liberal teachers' union and special interest groups that are responsible for indoctrinating our children.” The Back to School USA PAC is planning on holding an April 7th fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago with right-wing founder of Project Veritas, James O'Keefe. Newly elected Representative Summer Lee is wasting no time in making her voice heard. Summer Lee is a co-sponsor of the newly introduced “Assault Weapons Ban of 2023.” She took to the House floor this week PA Senators Bob Casey and John Fetterman and OH Senator Sherrod Brown introduced the “Railway Accountability Act” that would help prevent the kind of disasters we just witnessed in East Palestine, OH. A coalition of more than two dozen environmental, faith, business, and healthcare groups sent a letter to Gov. Josh Shapiro this week urging him to keep Pennsylvania's commitment to the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative as part of Shapiro's stated commitment to getting PA to net-zero emissions by 2050. And Temple University's president Jason Wingard steps down after an authorization of a no-confidence vote by the Temple's faculty union; a strike by graduate students, and the murder of Temple University Police Sgt. Christopher Fizgerald. And, yes, the Dungeons and Dragons movie, Honor Among Thieves hits the big screen today! GM Web3 had an eventful show today, and here is the recap. Firstly, another measure of inflation came in below expectations PCE, which is good news for the inflation narrative. BTC and ETH are experiencing a pump, and OSF is passing the brew and the Hopium around. Interestingly, BTC dominance has dropped today without an apparent reason. The hosts predict a god candle weekend, but they advise to DYOR. Ian C Rogers came on to talk about the recent raise that happened with Ledger. He shared that during the SVB breakdown, he learned the best lessons in bitcoin available. He believes that digital value needs to be workable and integrated into our everyday lives. Ledger will now have a fee-free trading day once a month on the Ledger live network. Most people are not aware that they can trade crypto on ledger live. However, the advantage of using ledger live is that your trade is on-chain, which means you sell your assets and become an owner, not just a number on a CEX spreadsheet. Ledger also plans to support different connect kits for various wallets across the network. They encourage favorite Dapps to sign up and integrate Ledger Extension. They stress that security should be taken seriously and that nobody should be requiring a blind signature to use their products collectively. The taproot wizards have over 4k videos submitted for the wizard shower videos creating a viral trend in the bitcoin ordinal and web3 timeline. Big ups to Udi Wertheimer for making magic.

It's Ramone's birthday! Don't worry we didn't pick on him this year. We got a message from Melanie King, a fight at a Church's Chicken in good ol Beaumont, Tx, and we pose a question, which one of us is the most toxic. Let's go!
This week I have feelings about navigation systems, Melanie has feelings about Daisy Jones & the Six, and we both have feelings about college baseball. We also break down Melanie's time in Dallas along with my time in Augusta, and it's Melanie's turn for Five Favorites. Full disclosure: I was at what you might refer to as a LOW EBB when Melanie and I recorded this episode. After the tragedies of the last few days, I felt like I mostly wanted to just get back in the bed. Melanie very sweetly suggested that we wait to record on Tuesday, but ultimately we decided to push through. Life can be heavy and hard. We continue to trust in the One who holds. Building a firm and starting a firm is not easy! But what Bill is going to cover today is easy. It's easy to learn. It's easy to do. And it will have a disproportionate positive impact on your business. The reason this stuff works is that it goes to the core of any successful business, which is client happiness! That is at the core — If your clients are happy, they will go out and rave about your business and any people they talk to.If those people need help in the same area in the future, they are the easiest leads to convert. Let's think about client happiness in a different way. There are two components to client happiness. Rev. Carl Roth, pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Elgin, TX, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study John 17:20-27. As Jesus concludes His prayer on Maundy Thursday, He asks the Father on behalf of those disciples to come who will believe through the Word that will be preached by His disciples. In this, Jesus prays for His Church still today, that we would share the unity that He has with His Father. This prayer of Jesus is answered in the unity that He gives in His Word, not in any man-made attempts. Jesus has given His Church His glory, and in the unity that He gives the Church with Himself and with His Father, the world sees the love of God. Even as Jesus has made known His name to His disciples, He will continue to make it known to His Church still. “The Word Made Flesh” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the Gospel according to St. John. The disciple whom Jesus loved wrote his Gospel account as an eyewitness to Jesus' life and ministry. As we read the Word of God recorded by St. John, the Holy Spirit works in us so that we might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and so have life by faith in His name.

Kelly here, hi. I am reposting this podcast this week because I simply do not know what else to do. After a mass shooting, that ended in 7 people (including 3 children) dead, just down the road from my home in Nashville this week, I do not have the words yet to talk about this again. Many of my close friends and specifically their children were greatly impacted by this shooting and to say that brings this issue being in your backyard brings it to the forefront of your mind is an understatement. I will be back to discuss more of what that is like at some point in the future, but in the meantime, I'm begging you all-no matter where you stand politically- put it to the side. This is bigger than your ego or own personal feelings. This is our children's lives, safety and freedom. Listen to this podcast, take the actionable steps, compromise and try to work together. If we can't unite over innocent children dying, we are further fucked than I even imagined. Sending love and healing energy to everyone in Nashville right now. ------ Retired US Army Veteran, gun owner and gun violence survivor, Melody McFadden, joins Kelly and Chip to simplify the conversation about gun laws and gun violence. "I don't want your guns, because I don't want to give you my guns." Melody tells the stories of loss she has faced at the hands of unsafe gun use and also how simple it could be to make those moments safe. On the date this was recorded in mid June, 3,599 people in America had been shot and killed since the mass shooting in Uvalde, TX on May 24. "You have to get a driver's license to drive a car, why shouldn't we have safety measures about owning guns?" Melody is full of love, faith and helpful small action steps we can all take to make our country a safe place to live. Website: everytown.org See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is it realistic for a law firm owner to strive for a law firm that runs without them? Jim and Tyson have changed their thinking around this topic of a law firm owner working towards the goal of being only in the owners box. Is this possible? It's an interesting idea, however, we don't think it's really possible for a law firm owner to be in the owners box only and run a highly successful firm that you can scale. You probably could get most of the way there, but the nature of what we do requires that we be deeply integrated into the firm. There are some exceptions but not many in today's world, and we don't think it's realistic to expect that you are going to be in the owners box and be able to just let the firm run itself. This and more is what Tyson and Jim discuss in today's episode. A horrific hate crime was committed today after a transgender shooter targeted a Christian elementary school. Lawyer by day, running coach by night - this is Jeff Cunningham. An Austin, TX-based coach with athletes worldwide training for various distances - including Olympic marathoners. He's the best running coach I know and a sage mentor and friend to many. Today's trouble is enough for today. Well now Jesus is picking a fight with me – all his glib talk about not worrying, about being more like a daisy or a sparrow than a real live human being with real live problems – a mortgage, a boss, a gender-diverse kid in a state that's not safe, and so much more. Why does he provoke us with this “don't worry, be happy” talk? What kind of life is he calling us to?To tell us your thoughts on this sermon, click through to the web posting and leave us a comment. In today's episode of the Talk Heathen, Secular Rarity and Christy Powell are live in studio to see if anyone can convince them of the existence of God. Michael from MI is the first caller who asks what can be done to implement the tools gathered from shows like this and if we should be putting up billboards. You can always start little groups in your area or find things that you care about to support that are not necessarily atheism, but still support related causes. Being part of an atheist organization is not the only way to get the needs met. You can always find new ways for activism. Justin in CO observed a disc shaped flying saucer using his telescope one night. There are many potential explanations that are more plausible than aliens. There are many opportunities for the image that you saw to not be what you saw by the time you are able to communicate how that image appears. Be careful not to believe everything you think. Be suspect of your own singular experiences.Evan in WA who talks about how science can explain consciousness through proprioception, which is an electrical chemical reaction. We are newly aware of how the nerve system communicates. We may be able to use science to fully explain consciousness in the future. The more we look into this, the more we will figure out.The first audience question is Jamie from TX who shares a relationship experience where there had to be someone to answer to that made him feel healthy, and asks about the safety of taking someone out of a religion. We have the tools needed to offer people the things that seem to be missing when leaving a religion.Brad in NJ who brings up a past call that was morally bankrupt. It amazes us there needs to be a threat of eternal torture for us not to be murdering people. Somehow we manage to be good people without some ancient book telling us how.Triston in TX wants to know how to bring up religious topics to children. Acknowledge that lots of people believe lots of things, and let your child know they get to be somebody who gets to decide what to believe and why. It will work out as long as you are not shoving your beliefs down your child's throat and not lying to them.Carolina in TX calls to clear up some misinformation about how people think the Space Program is not important. The Space Program is important to humanity because not only is it cost effective, but it drives the education and training to communities of people that support economies. Everything that is done in space is brought back to benefit the people on earth. Thank you for tuning in everyone! Remember the essential workers! The question of the week is: What is the first thing you would do if you saw all Christians get raptured?
Andy was born in Provo, UT but grew up mostly in Spokane, WA, where his dad was a pediatrician. He is the oldest of 8 children (the 8 children were born in 10 years, 3 while his dad was going through medical school… his mom is a saint!). When he was young, his parents got sick of their children watching too much TV so one day the TV “broke” and instruments appeared. They started a family band (Andy chose the guitar), playing bluegrass music, performing around outdoor gatherings, granges, nursing homes and shopping malls. He even attended a performance on prom night, bringing his date along. He loved playing wide receiver on his HS football team and he loved his HS Biology class, where his teacher brought the subject of molecular biology to life, inspiring his future career. After a year of college at BYU, he went on an LDS mission to the Iowa, Des Moines Mission. We met the summer after his return and married a year later in SLC, UT. He got his MBA and has worked for various startup companies in the BioTech industry, in TX, CA, WA, MO and UT. Four years ago, he took the leap of starting his own company, where he uses DNA and epigenetics to help solve fertility issues, specifically male infertility. He loves reading, listening to live music with his brother and concerts with his kids, water skiing, snow skiing, road cycling, watching cycling and eating good food, especially anything chocolate. When we travel, he's a major foodie, always scouting out the best places to eat. (We can always charm him out of a bad mood by going to get good food.) He's a master sourdough bread maker and has 2 mean DuoLingo streaks - one in Italian and one in Spanish. We have 4 children, 3 girls and 1 boy, ages 25-17 yrs old and have been married for 26 years. When he dies, we're going to bury him with his bike. What a ride it's been!
I'm always telling my coaching clients: "DO NOT SQUANDER YOUR YOUTHFUL ENERGY"Nobody has more embraced this ideal—as part of my coaching program—than today's guest.Jaekyu Lee, who goes by Jonathan, is a young man I've been working with for a little over a year. Watching someone so dedicated to his own personal growth & development has been inspiring and intrinsically rewarding [for me].His story is nothing short of awe-some. He's that 1st-generation Asian fella down the hall you've never taken the time to ask:"Hey man, what's your story?"Well, I got that opportunity when "J," as I call him, came down from Dallas a few weeks ago.We actually recorded in a professional studio, so it may sound a little better than previous episodes. Here's that story. There was a sex offender I'd gotten to know over the past several months (and liked). In fact, I liked "Jerome" (not his real name) so much that I offered to be the sales rep for his mobile car washing business.I was going to dust off the 'ole blue suit and visit high-rises where I had connections in Houston. I'd see if we could setup on the first floor of the garage. He'd be stationary at 70 years old, and it'd be much more lucrative for him.Jerome was smart, a great storyteller, and reminded me of Morgan Freeman. Not to mention the crime he committed occurred before I was born.So I wanted to help Jerome. Plus, I thought he'd be a great guest on the podcast. Such a great guest, in fact, that I rented a professional studio on the day & time we had agreed to meet.Well, Jerome "went dark" on me a few days before we were scheduled to record. I actually still haven't heard from him. And I didn't want to leave the studio's owner hanging, so I asked J if he'd want to tell his story on my podcast. He said, "Absolutely!"Although he was in town visiting friends—I challenged him to a game of pickleball at Lifetime Fitness—loser buys the winner their book of choice (we're both avid readers). After J got smoked, getting A Monk's Guide to Happiness by Gelong Thubten in the mail was like Christmas morning. You see I didn't tell him what book I wanted—I just sent him a screenshot of the Notes app from my iPhone. I've kept a running tab for years of books I plan to get to someday. So I didn't know what would show up in the mail. But this book is a gamer. Highly recommend! Thanks, J!Jonathan's not your average Asian dude down the hall. His upbringing took him all over the world, spending the first half of his life in three countries. He was born in Busan, South Korea. His dad, who worked for LG, was transferred to Jakarta, Indonesia, then Monterrey, Mexico, before they finally arrived in the States (El Paso, TX). Jonathan earned his Doctorate of Pharmacy in 2018 from the University of Houston, then completed a 2-year post-graduate residency for the US government.Today, J works for the government as a pharmacy manager, and holds down another full-time job as a Realtor at Rendon Realty, LLC(I've been there—it's no joke).J says his passion for reading & financial independence will continue to provide all the fuel he needs to accomplish his goals. He's up at 4am every morning so he can get to the gym. What's his primary goal? To become a multi-millionaire and retire by age 40 (he's 29 now). He'll do it.Jonathan's a strong advocate of self-development and passionate about helping other men awaken their true potential.Hope you enjoy listening as much as we did recording!
