Prehospital blood is one of the hottest debates in trauma resuscitation — and the evidence just got a lot more interesting. In this episode, Drs. Patrick Georgoff and Ayman Ali sit down with Dr. Ed Barnard, UK defense professor of emergency medicine and author of the landmark SWIFT trial, and Dr. Juan De Chesney, trauma surgeon and pioneer in prehospital blood programs, to break down what we actually know about getting blood to patients before they hit the doors. The SWIFT trial — the largest prehospital whole blood RCT to date — found no superiority of whole blood over component therapy, but the story is far more nuanced than a negative headline suggests. From the logistics of carrying blood on a helicopter to the stark reality that only 1.8% of US ground EMS carries any blood products at all, this conversation exposes both the progress and the enormous gaps that remain. Low chance (10%) of tropical development in the southwest Gulf into this weekend  Increasing signal for heavy rainfall late Sunday-Tuesday A tropical wave and associated large plume of moisture has moved over the Bay of Campeche this morning. Satellite images show a burst of deeper convection but there is no indication of any surface low IR Satellite Loop for Gulf of Mexico | Tropical Tidbits . Upper level conditions are only marginally favorable for any development of this system given westerly and southwesterly wind shear in place over the southern and western Gulf. This feature and associated moisture will spread NW toward the northern Mexican coast and south Texas coast over the weekend and then northward along the TX coast early next week. Sunday-Tuesday: As the feature in the southern Gulf moves toward the NE MX and lower TX coast over the weekend and plume of tropical moisture will spread NW into the TX coast. At the same time an usually strong trough of low pressure over the central plains will push a cold front southward into the region. This front looks to stall over the area Monday and Tuesday. The combination of the stalling front and tropical moisture will surge rain chances late Sunday into Tuesday. With the stalled front in the area the potential for cell training within a moisture rich environment will be increased. WPC has already outlooked portions of the area for Sunday and Monday for excessive rainfall. It will be important over the next few days to monitor forecasted rainfall amounts and any potential flooding concerns early next week. This week on the Hemp Show, Larry Smart returns to talk about Ursa Alta, the new low-THC hemp variety that Cornell AgriTech has released for commercial production. The variety has been seven years in the making. "We had come up with a new cultivar that was distinct, uniform and stable. That's our definition of a cultivar," Smart said. Ursa Alta, which means tall bear and is named for the Cornell mascot, is a fiber variety with low THC and a high hurd ratio. While bred for conditions in New York state, Smart said the variety excels in southern latitudes as well. "This variety does grow very well in Texas," Smart said. "My collaborator, Calvin Trostel, is based in Lubbock, at about the same latitude as where they're growing for Panda Biotech. So we think it will grow quite well in that area and yield quite well for them." Panda Biotech, owner of the second largest hemp processing facility in the world, is based in Wichita Falls, TX. Cornell has licensed seed multiplication to Condor Seed Production in Yuma, Arizona. Condor has a deep history of vegetable seed production — onions, artichokes, brassicas — and brings more than 40 years of experience to the work. Smart provided Condor with 110 pounds of breeder seed to start the multiplication process, with an ambitious target ahead: "to scale up the seed from 110 pounds of breeder seed to hopefully by next year, somewhere between three and 400,000 pounds of seed.
