This podcast episode examines the many intersections, historical and socio-cultural narratives dictating the perceptions and understandings of black mental health. Narratives of mental illness are coded white and purposefully leave out and neglect people of colour, pathologizing them. This framework of theory is supported through examples of historical classifications of mental illness allocated specifically onto black folk , and using scholarly work.
This podcast episode seeks to examine the racialized histories which established and continue to influence health care systems and Western medicine. Comparing the United States with Canada to examine how similar histories and parallel patterns of anti-blackness, colonialism and white supremacy shape the many ways in which black communities, Indigenous communities and other communities of colour in Canada and America are treated. This part of the episode's primary focus is on American historical events, this is to reflect on the lack of data in Canada pertaining to the racialized health disparities which are reported in America. Examining Black maternal mortality rates in the U.S, where according to American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black women are three to four times more likely to die from childbirth compared to their white counterparts. How come preventable symptoms such as preeclampsia and hemorrhaging are killing black women at such an alarming rate? The answer is purposeful negligence inspired by racist assumptions.

Analyzing where black bodies are situated, how this impacts black maternal health, and why it is important to examine Environmental Racism to better understand and find proactive solutions for the reproductive rights and justices of mothers and their communities. This part will encompass further themes of: microbial inheritances and replications which are interrupted or advanced through certain (medical) practices (C-section vs. vaginal delivery).

This part will encompass further themes of: access to nutritionally rich foods, specific placements of food stores locations, which foods are sold in which neighbourhoods. "Grow Food" by Appetite for Change is featured alongside the podcast to recognize the efforts of youth and their communities in changing their neighbourhoods into being self-sustainable, while criticizing the lack of nutritious foods within their areas.
