- I am not a parent, but I am a DONA International certified Birth Doula working in North Carolina - I did not learn about what a doula was until the age of 26 years old in graduate school. Once I learned about the field, it instantly clicked for me. I've always been fascinated with birth but never wanted to be a nurse or doctor. - I had some fears around becoming a labor support doula and not having gone through childbirth but my training reassured me that I was able to do the job - I learned of the Alliance of Black Doulas for Black Mamas (which was rebranded to LEADDoula) through an email listserv that a friend sent me, because she knew I wanted to be doula - ABDBM or LEAD was strictly for Black women who wanted to become doulas, and was focused on serving black birthing people and their families - It was a 6 week program with culturally tailored education, included all required DONA International training to become certified, and afterwards, we were required to serve as doula for at least 3 births to be eligible for DONA certification - Between the program and my own clients, I've had 13 births - Fun fact: My first birth was a cesarean section - I love serving as a birth doula because of the relationships I have built with the moms and families I've served. Being with a woman at her most intimate and vulnerable time of childbirth is such a special gift FIND HER HERE:linkedin.com/in/jnmclean3

A change in Felicia's co-parenting arrangement has her discovering more about who she is without being a full-time mother. This, in turn, has her wondering if the rest of the Mama's Den crew knows exactly who they are outside of motherhood and how they came to those realizations. PLUS what does it look like to try and find balance inside of motherhood with partners, fathers, and even the children? What are those expectations of what it is to be a mom? Today, Ashley, Felicia, and Melanie (you gotta make sure you're following the Black Love socials to find out what Codie's been working on!) are speaking on not only that, but on finances in general. Dear Mama, Dream with me. Can you imagine a world with a Black midwife in every family, in every community, easily accessible, at our fingertips, a world in which birth choices aren't controlled by capitalism, a world in which the birth practices that Black women used to literally birth this country are honored, a world in which they are revered, a world in which Black midwives could practice the full scope of reproductive health and reproductive choices are respected, a world in which Black mothers don't fear death in the midst of giving birth, experience it with fully joy and bodily autonomy. It's Black Maternal Health Week and we are grateful for the opportunity to sit with two people invested in building that world: Jamarah Amani, founder of National Black Midwives Alliance & cofounder of Southern Birth Justice Network & filmmaker K. Sanderson In this episode we're talking:
It's Black Maternal Health Week and the Mamas have brought in Kimberly Durdin who is a Licensed Midwife, Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Childbirth Educator and Doula Trainer, Plus she's a mother of six and grandmother of five! She and business partner Allegra Hill are co-owners and co-founders of Kindred Space LA, South LA's only Black-owned Birth Center and hub for midwifery care, doula support and training, lactation consulting, education, parenting support group, enrichment and movement. So needless to say, she knows a thing or two about maternal health! Kim is here to give us some of the details about birthing that we just don't know. Things like the difference between a doula and a midwife, or what's better pain meds or natural? Should we as Black women be avoiding hospital births? We're not saying Kim has all the answers, but this is definitely a starting place for anyone who is asking questions! If you're interested in finding out more about Black Maternal Health Week you can click HEREMake sure you check out and support Kindred Space LA and if you're looking for more resources check out the Irth Appthis is not medical advice. As you may (or may not know) our Mamas all had their children very quickly into their relationships/marriages. Kim and her husband, however, waited five years before having a child. What is it like to have children after climbing the corporate ladder? Do relationships stay the same? Get stronger? Fall apart? Have y'all seen this Chelsea Handler video that's been going around? She basically breaks down "A Day of a Childless Woman" in a hilarious way, but had the milquetoast men of Fox News foaming at the mouth. Even though it's none of their business, it does have the ladies wondering "Is it okay for women to NOT want children?" Meaning, do we respect women who make the decision to not start a family enough? Moreover, what's the decision like to decide to not want anymore children once you've had some? We're deep diving into many facets of motherhood today, and one thing remains clear, there is no wrong answer. (Except from those men on Fox News. They don't know shit) Alright Mama's Den community is everyone meant to be a mom? Is it okay for the single ladies to be loud and proud about NOT having kids? #DearMama, where do we belong? Where can we be safe? Where can we be brave? Where can our children thrive? Where can we be? These are questions that more and more Black mothers are searching beyond the borders of America for answers to. Today, we explore these questions with daughter of the diaspora, Parthenia Luke. A descendant of formerly enslaved Black folks who left America in the late 1800s for Liberia, we have a raw, honest, and real conversation about what it means for Black Americans to leave America, and what it means for our children and us to stay. This episode of The Mommy Labor Nurse Podcast is all about the realities of black maternal health here in the US, and what we can do to spark change! I actually put this article out last year, but I wanted to re-release it this week in honor of Black Maternal Health Week 2022. to spark any kind of change surrounding racism in healthcare (and specifically in black maternal health) I truly believe that awareness is the first step.
