Kenya and China have reached a groundbreaking agreement to restructure $3.5 billion in railway loans, converting them from U.S. dollars into Chinese yuan. The move could save Kenya $215 million in debt servicing costs and marks the first time an African nation has shifted major sovereign debt into RMB — a potential model for other Global South countries. In this episode, Eric & Géraud unpack what this deal really means for Kenya, China, and the broader narrative around China's “debt-trap diplomacy.” They explore how the agreement challenges old assumptions, what it says about the future of RMB internationalization, and whether other countries — like Indonesia — could follow suit. What is the one- to four-year game plan of the online Right other than clicks? I show how Democrats continue to crush Republicans in special elections, and yet we are not even dying on our own hills. I nostalgically look back to the 2013 Obamacare shutdown fight to contrast the two parties and to show how Democrats are united behind a message even when they have a losing hand to play. Republicans are on the cusp of losing on health care even when they have all three branches and the megaphone of Trump. Also, judicial supremacism continue to bog down every good Trump policy, with the SCOTUS ruling on nationwide injunctions proving to be a joke. I also offer some initial thoughts on the Gaza ceasefire and what to look for in the coming months. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the late 1930s, fieldworkers with the Works Progress Administration interviewed about 3,500 formerly enslaved people resulting in approximately 20,000 pages of unedited typescripts. This collection of oral histories is arguably the single greatest body of African American folklore extant, and a significant portion is devoted to folk music and song. John Minton's Folk Music and Song in the WPA Ex-Slave Narratives (UP of Mississippi, 2024) examines the musical references in these narratives. A combination of reference information and analysis, Minton contextualizes and scrutinizes the vocal and instrumental music the narrators talked about, explains the various musical and cultural influences on Black folk music, and discusses the place of music and dance in the lives of enslaved people. He covers instrumental music and social dancing, spirituals and hymns, singing games and lullabies, ring plays and reels, worksongs, minstrel songs, ballads, war songs, slavery laments, and more. In the course of this exhaustive book, Minton helps his readers understand the lives of the narrators and the conditions in which they lived before and after emancipation. In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Dr. Mohammed Alsudairi and Dr. Andrea Ghiselli join us to discuss their newly released book Narratives of Sino-Middle Eastern Futures. They challenge prevailing narratives that frame China's engagement in the Middle East primarily through the lens of U.S.–China rivalry and offer alternative perspectives by drawing on extensive Arabic and Chinese-language sources to highlight how regional actors themselves interpret and shape their relationships with Beijing. Drawing on Saudi Arabia and Syria as the two core case studies in their book, they show how regional perceptions of China diverge sharply depending on various factors such as national capabilities and alignment with the United States. The conversation also examines China's diplomacy toward Iran, its muted response to the Israel–Iran conflict, and why both Chinese and regional leaders prefer to limit Beijing's security role. Dr. Alsudairi and Dr. Ghiselli conclude that the future of Sino–Middle Eastern relations will likely reflect cautious continuity—marked by pragmatic engagement and mutual restraint. Dr. Alsudairi is a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations of the Arabic Speaking World, Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, at the Australian National University. Prior to his appointment, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, working on a project examining the intersections between religion and infrastructure in the context of China's Belt and Road Initiative. Since 2015, he oversaw the development of the Asian Studies Program at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. More recently in 2022, he was awarded a research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to work on his upcoming book manuscript. Dr. Ghiselli is a Lecturer in International Politics in the Department of Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy, and Anthropology of the University of Exeter. He is also non-resident research fellow with the TOChina Hub and the Head of Research for its ChinaMed Project. He has previously worked in China at Fudan University for nine years. This week, “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” is the most watched show on Netflix. It's a dramatized retelling of the life of the serial killer who inspired “Psycho” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” The “Monster” franchise, which includes two earlier seasons about Jeffrey Dahmer and Lyle and Erik Menendez, is one of Netflix's splashiest hits – the Dahmer season is still the fourth-most viewed English language show in the history of the platform. And the true crime obsession only grows each year. On Netflix last year, 15 of the top 20 documentaries were true crime docs, compared to just six in 2020. But what does it mean for the subjects of these documentaries, that Americans endlessly crave stories about murder and bloodshed and terror? John J. Lennon is a contributing editor for Esquire and writes frequently for New York Review of Books and the New York Times. This week, he spoke to host Brooke Gladstone from Sing Sing Correctional Facility, where he's serving his 24th year of his 28-year-to-life sentence for murder, drug sales, and gun possession. They spoke about his new book, The Tragedy of True Crime, what it was like to watch himself get featured in a true crime documentary, and why he wants to upend the typical 'true crime' narratives of good vs. evil. Ghost dives headfirst into the chaos of October 7th's second anniversary, breaking down the media's narrative war over Charlie Kirk's death, the Zionist influence inside conservative circles, and the growing schism between Israel's defenders and the MAGA movement. He dissects Michelle Goldberg's New York Times hit piece, Candace Owens' leaked messages, and Megyn Kelly's sanitized take on “trusting the right people.” From Tucker Carlson's blunt truths to Netanyahu's veiled threats toward Mar-a-Lago, Ghost traces how propaganda and geopolitics collide across the world stage. Shifting gears, he unpacks Trump's escalating “act of kindness” strikes on Venezuelan drug boats, General Flynn and Cash Patel's rhetoric about regime change, and the deeper economic game behind oil reserves and cartel control. Commerce, Conflict, and the High-Risk Sealing Voyage Guest: Eric Jay Dolin Left for Dead is set during the War of 1812, documenting a collision between young America and Britain in the contested Falkland Islands. The narrative begins with the highly lucrative sealing commerce, which involved gathering millions of seal skins and sea otter pelts for sale primarily in China. American sealer Charles Barnard proposed a high-risk voyage aboard the brig Nanina to Murray and Son, aiming to exploit the projected pent-up demand due to reduced competition. Despite the imminent war, they left New York Harbor just as an embargo was placed. The crew included Barnard's elderly, infirm father, Valentine, who was intended to sail the initial cargo back to New York. The presence of four experienced sealing captains among the crew, including diarist Barzillai Pease, created a potential "recipe for disaster."

Burning Bright welcomes Jon Herold for a high-level dive into the silent conflict unfolding beneath the headlines. Together, they map out how Trump's wartime authorities, the weaponization of government, and the controlled opposition dynamic all tie into a broader struggle for power, one waged through lawfare, psyops, and narrative control. From the Middle East peace maneuvers to Trump's declaration of war on drug cartels, they connect the dots between global and domestic theaters of war, showing how each move fits into the larger devolution framework. This conversation explores faith, sovereignty, and the unseen mechanics of a world in transition, where truth itself has become the ultimate battlefield.

In this episode of Everyday Injustice, host David Greenwald speaks with Daniel Forkkio, CEO of Represent Justice, a national organization that amplifies the voices of formerly incarcerated people through storytelling. Forkkio explains that Represent Justice partners with filmmakers, advocates, and ambassadors across the country to humanize those impacted by the criminal legal system and shift public perception. “It's all storytelling all the time,” he says, emphasizing dignity, authenticity, and lived experience as central to systemic change. Forkkio traces the organization's origins to the Just Mercy campaign in 2019, when screenings of the film inspired powerful audience reactions and led him to found Represent Justice as a permanent platform for narrative change. Today, the nonprofit supports projects like Chasing Redemption, which explores life-without-parole sentences, and A Million Dollar Cage, a film exposing the staggering costs of youth incarceration in Los Angeles. Through these campaigns, Represent Justice uses stories to influence legislation, reshape culture, and empower communities to envision a justice system rooted in transformation rather than punishment. Throughout the conversation, Forkkio challenges the myths surrounding crime, punishment, and safety, calling for broader public understanding of trauma, housing insecurity, and mental health as drivers of incarceration. He urges greater media literacy and a rejection of fear-based narratives that dominate headlines, reminding listeners that “authentic stories can shift beliefs by the thousands.” His advocacy for restorative justice reflects a vision of reconciliation and healing — a vision that contrasts sharply with America's overreliance on prisons and punishment. Forkkio concludes by inviting audiences to take action: watch a film, learn about its campaign, and support the storytellers who are reshaping the conversation around justice. “Everyone has a role to play when it comes to narrative,” he says. “Take a stand by watching something and changing the way that you think.” Represent Justice, through its growing network of ambassadors, films, and partnerships, is redefining how stories of incarceration and redemption can move a nation toward empathy and reform.

In this powerful episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik sits down with 12-time national boxing champion and mindset speaker Cam F. Awesome to explore the link between self-talk, resilience, and reinvention. Cam opens up about the shame of being removed from the Olympic team, how he rewrote his internal dialogue, and why he legally changed his last name to “Awesome.” This episode is a must-listen for anyone battling self-doubt, burnout, or fear of change—Cam drops real, raw insights into how our thoughts shape our reality and why discipline, not comfort, is the true expression of self-love. About the Guest:Cam F. Awesome is a former U.S. Olympic boxing team captain, 12-time national champion, motivational speaker, and author of Becoming Awesome. His work centers on empowering others to become the author of their own life story. Key Takeaways: Self-talk shapes identity—change your narrative, change your life. Discipline is love.
