Ears on Art

After 19 years, the hosts of Ears on Art are retiring. Along with memories of their time at KCBX, Crissa and Steven share stories of handmade gifts and objects that hold personal value during the holidays.

EOA visits with local glass artist Paula Radke. Based in Morro Bay, Paula has been creating with glass for several decades. Her work often involves bead making, fusing, and slumping, and she has recently developed a new product she calls "glass clay." She opens her new retail outlet this September on the Embarcadero in Morro Bay.

Joe Kourakis is a Cal Poly professor emeritus. On this month's Ears on Art episodes, Kourakis the conversation is about his architecture design concepts and his sculpture.

This week 'Ears on Art" visits with Los Osos-based artist Ted Emrick. Emrick is a sculptor working in a variety of materials, with glass being one of his favorites. He loves to teach and volunteers at Morro Bay High School, where last year he helped students create one of the cows for the Cow Parade , an international public art exhibit that features fiberglass cows painted, modified and decorated by local artists.

This month Ears on Art visits George Jercich George, a glass blower and sculptor who lives in Los Osos. In 1976 he was hired as a lecturer in the Art and Design Department at Cal Poly. He was asked to develop a glass program which he did very successfully. Jercich provides some interesting history of the local and national ground swell of glass programs in university art departments.

On May 2 we meet with Beverly Brown, a local artist who works wonder with wire. She will be a participant in the Open Studios Art Tour bonus weekend taking place May 5 and 6 throughout the county. Details at ARTS Obispo.org. And on May 9 we talk about printmaking with Mae Wilson. Making use of several printmaking techniques, Mae explores imagery that ranges from fantasy to every day objects.

Ears on Art celebrates its 19th anniversary with highlights from the archives. On April 4, we will feature some of our out-of-area guests, and April 11, we will showcase a few of the local artists who have joined us in conversation about their art. This month we begin a shorter format for the show. This is part of the revamping of the hour-long "Issues and Ideas," which will now feature an increased variety of segments.

Despite growing up in a family with no other artists, Deladier Almeida started sketching when he was just five years old. His friends in his native country, Brazil, would pose for him while he created portraits that seemed beyond his years. Ears on Art spoke with Almeida in March.
