Welcome to the first episode of a new Howl & Blossom podcast series Wild Soul Sessions. In this episode Alisha and I talk mental health, hormonal cycles, being in love with Nature and how yoga can support us during different phases of our lives. To join us in our month long exploration of 'Yoga with the Moon' please check out Alisha's website http://alishaeden.yoga/ Alisha and I join together to create a community around our loves - yoga and the moon. We invite you to participate in ‘Yoga with the Moon’ - 28 days of ebbing and flowing with the natural cycle of the moon, connecting with the various yin and yang energies of a cyclical existence, and exploring living in harmony with our own hormonal cycles. We’ll be cultivating a community of like-hearted women, joining together in circle at the new moon via Zoom, and being led in regular yoga practices. The pace and intensity of these yoga practices will be informed by the moon phase - the new moon is gentle and introspective, the full moon is active and extroverted. And there are plenty of other energies in between for us to explore. I’ll be leading us in the new moon and full moon circles, and Alisha will guide us in our yoga practices. We hope to make connections that extend beyond the yoga mat - both with each other and also within our own selves, so that we can carry these lessons with us in every day life. We hope you get to know us during this podcast episode, and if you feel called to join us in for Yoga with the Moon please do get in touch. :: Alisha's Details :: Website: http://alishaeden.yoga/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eden_alisha/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Alishaedenyoga/ :: Sian's Details :: Website: https://sianpeters.me/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sianpeters.me/
As we grow up and enter into adulthood we are told to put away childish things - to de-prioritise joy. We are taught that our joy is not important anymore. Moreover, when we do experience moments of joy, we allow our thoughts to thieve them from us - immediately imagining the worst. Something Brene Brown refers to as foreboding joy. But cultivating joy in our lives is important for our own strength and resilience. Without joy we have no antidote to sadness. We have no anchor in darkness - no way to turn on the light internally. In this episode we explore what brings us joy, what steals our joy, why the dance of light and darkness are important, and how we might deepen our connection to our own unique versions of joy. Short but sweet! In this episode I talk about the importance of reconnecting with ourselves, our communities and the planet - why we feel so disconnected in the first place, and what we can do about it. We can be happier without winning the lottery! We just have to start walking the path and rewilding. As Ram Dass said: “We are all just walking each other home.” “Practice listening to your intuition, your inner voice; ask questions; be curious; see what you see; hear what you hear; and then act upon what you know to be true. These intuitive powers were given to your soul at birth.” - Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Women Who Run with the Wolves. :: The Howl & Blossom Podcast :: My name is Sian, and I’m a wild woman! It's World Mental Health Day! And I've been riding the most serious wave of anxiety that I've experienced in years. This podcast episode is a raw, unedited account of my experiences over the past week. I talk about how I turned up to work and lasted 10 minutes, 7 of which I was crying. I describe how my anxiety meltdown felt, what I'm doing about it, and what I've learnt as a result. I've not edited myself at all. There are pauses, and a lot of fumbling and erm-ing, and I wanted to keep that in there to give you a true reflection on where I am at at the moment. Some of those pauses were due to me catching my breath while I tried not to cry. I hope this episode is relatable, and I hope it goes some way to combat the constant highlight reel we are exposed to with social media. If you're struggling right now, you are not alone. We're in this together. And there are thousands of us, millions even, who are managing our mental health in the best ways we know how. The more we share, the less stigma we face, and the more we learn. I'd love to hear about your mental health journey, and the tools you use to cope. We are taught that thin is beautiful. That small is sexy. That we had better not take up too much space in the world because we will be unloveable if we do. I call BS on that. This fatphobia needs to stop. It’s making us all sick. It is not representative of the entire population. Nor is it an in-depth and complete study of everything to do with body positivity and fatphobia - not by a long shot! But I had to start somewhere. Everything is an exchange. In this episode we discuss how everything in our lives is an exchange of either time, money or energy. We explore what it means to find balance between giving and receiving, and how difficult it can be to put in appropriate boundaries. We have the markers of success all wrong - we prioritise these external markers of success, instead of internal ones. And we’ve been brought up believing that the only way we can be successful in life is by hitting the external markers, as if life was a tick box exercise. In this podcast, I reframe the idea of success, and suggest alternative internal markers that I believe will ultimately lead to more fulfilled lives, happier people, and a more purposeful existence. “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” - Albert Einstein Website: https://sianpeters.me/ Instagram: www.instagram.com/sianpeters.me/
This episode I expand a little on my mental health story and share with you one technique I used, and still use today, to overcome that feeling of total overwhelm. I started doing this when I couldn't get out of the house, and now I use it whenever I see overwhelm on the horizon to help prevent me from getting unwell again.
