Is yoga harmless? Is it just another form of exercise, or is the strong spiritual component of yoga something Christians should be wary of? Yoga means "to yoke" or to open oneself up and invite in the spirit of yoga. Yoga sutras are a basically a guidebook for divination, which God expressly prohibits in the Bible. Listen in as Jessica Smith makes a strong case for how the poses alone invite spiritual forces into our lives that have no place in the lives of Christ followers. The Bible says, "You shall have no other God's before Me." Let's talk about alternatives to yoga today! Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 In this talk, we will cover the psychology and some mechanisms that underly the effectiveness of trauma-sensitive yoga as a therapy for complex trauma. In recent years that has been a shift towards incorporating body-based therapies for treatment of a range of mental health issues including complex trauma. With regards to complex trauma, this is important because of the limitations of cognitive-based therapies. Specifically, the drop-out rates for psychotherapies can range between 60-90%, and more than half of the participants that do complete treatment still reach the criteria for PTSD. Trauma-sensitive yoga is a body-based treatment for complex trauma that offers an alternative. This therapy is designed to foster interoceptive awareness (i.e., felt body-sense). The methods include specific language and a trauma-informed approach whereby the facilitator is educated in how trauma can affect felt body sense and how this can interact with the therapeutic process. In this talk, we will introduce some of the methods of trauma-sensitive yoga and discuss some of the neurobiology and psychological theories that are thought to underpin the effectiveness of this treatment. We will discuss the importance of a present moment interoceptive experience and the role it plays in the therapeutic process. -- Kathie Overeem Ph.D. (psychology) is a trauma-sensitive yoga facilitator with a background in psychology and neuroscience. Kathie has over 13 years of academic research experience. During that time, she published research and lectured on topics including emotional memory, personality psychology, biological psychology, behavioural and systems neuroscience, cognition, and molecular biology. Teaching yoga since 2016, Kathie has over 700 hr of yoga teacher training and started working with clients using trauma-sensitive yoga in 2018. She is a certified Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator, trained and supervised by the Center for Trauma and Embodiment at the Justice Research Institute (MA, USA). Currently, Kathie works with clients that have experienced stress, anxiety, complex trauma, c-PTSD, PTSD, and eating disorders. She also works with organisations and government programs that support adults and youth experiencing complex mental illness, complex trauma, and alcohol and other drug rehabilitation. -- The Weekend University's mission is to make the best minds and ideas in psychology more accessible so that you can use the knowledge to improve your quality of life. We release 95% of our content for free and don't run any ads during the show. That said, we'd love to expand our reach and get the knowledge shared by our speakers into the hands of more people so they can benefit too. So, if you're in the mood for doing a random act of kindness today, and helping others improve their lives in the process, it would make a huge difference if you could take just 30 seconds and leave a short review on your favourite podcast provider - whether that's iTunes (https://bit.ly/iTunes-podcast-review), Stitcher (https://bit.ly/stitcher-podcast-review) or Spotify (https://bit.ly/spotify-podcast-ratings). In addition, we'll pick one review each month and that person will get a free ticket to our monthly online conference, which usually costs £50. Join us for this fun pilot episode of our new “From the Field” podcast series we are beginning to explore. For the past week, our sporting team has been traveling around Southeast Alaska recording interviews with hunters and anglers regarding the endless opportunities and abundance of the region. During this episode, Aaron and Mandela sit on the edge of the Tongas National Forest with Artemis ambassador, Jodee Dixon, and the Executive Director of the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC), Meredith Trainor. We discuss their friendship and connection through hunting, mentorship and Yoga. We learn about the important conservation work SEACC does and the Artemis outreach programs Jodee offers. We also talk about the ways in which their background in mountaineering and whitewater kayaking parallel hunting and fishing. Enjoy this abbreviated podcast pilot episode and let us know what you think. Did you like hearing podcasts recorded in the field? Would you like them to be shorter or longer? What questions would you like to ask our guests? Links: www.seacc.org www.artemis.nwf.org www.nwf.org/gamechanger Show notes: 0:26 – Aaron sets the scene, introduces the guests and the stand-in cohost for this episode. 3:00 – Jodee talks about her passion for seeking and sharing knowledge. How she met Meredith and the transition to teaching Meredith how to hunt. 5:10 – Jodee talks about the different species she and her husband hunt in SE Alaska including Dahl sheep, elk, black bear and Sitka blacktail deer. 7:00 – Meredith talks about how she met Jodee and grew an interest in hunting after being a vegetarian for most of her life. 10:30 – Jodee shares how she got introduced to hunting and the story behind her first big game hunt for Dahl sheep. 14:00 – Jodee is currently teaching Meredith how to hunt. They both chat about how Artemis helped strengthen their connection and the opportunity to bring women together to share wild game and embrace a curiosity of hunting. 18:49 – Jodee and Meredith share how their experiences in whitewater kayaking, Yoga and mountaineering parallel how they approach hunting and fishing. Jodee reflects on single point focus and “forced meditation”. 23:19 – Meredith shares the conservation work she and her team at the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) focus on. One part of their work is focused on climate action, citizen science and the importance of sharing observations of a changing landscape due to climate change. 27:53 – Alaska is front and center when it comes to a warming climate. Meredith discusses how an increase in 3-6 degrees effects wildlife in Southeast Alaska. 29:40 – Jodee shares her observations and concerns regarding hunting, fishing and climate change in Southeast Alaska. 31:56 – Jodee highlights some of the Artemis outreach opportunities she offers in the region. 32:55 – Closing statements.

Chase has endured severe emotional and physical traumas. He lost his father when he was 19 and soon after suffered horrendous injuries to his entire body that required a complete reconstruction of his femur. On top of that, he suffered from PTSD after ending his deployment. Those experiences took a severe toll on his entire well-being. But ultimately, they were the catalyst for him to dive deep into his biggest insecurities, share them with the people he loves, and accept what life brings him, good or bad. He's now helping people all around the world transform their bodies and minds through conscious content, coaching, and consulting services. Today, we cover his journey from army veteran to fitness coach, the importance of listening to your body, why bottling up your emotions is a surefire way to anxiety and trauma, and so much more. Key Takeaways with Chase Chewning The key lessons Chase learned about health from his years of podcasting. Your body is your greatest coach. Stop and listen to what it's saying before you do yourself harm. What's one thing you can commit to that you know will make you happiest in the long run? Find out how Chase bounced back from PTSD and depression after losing his father and suffering gruesome injuries. Surround yourself with people that love you, and love them back. Don't bottle up your emotions. Do this instead. Stop trying to control external events. Let them unfold and see what happens. As we go through our lives, all the stressors, anxieties, bumps in the road, past traumas all add up and begin to sort of paint us into a corner and sometimes it feels like avoiding them will make them easier to deal with. Out of sight, out of mind...but over time we begin to see that there is no avoiding truth because what tends to happen is instead of avoiding that thing we are pretending doesn't exist, we end of fixating on it. Instead of avoiding the thing, it begins to run our lives in so many unproductive ways. This meditation aims to help gain perspective on this and reminds us that recognizing and acknowledging, much like acknowledging thoughts while in meditation, makes moving on with our lives so much easier. Namaste.

While training for a triathlon, Kristy was hit by a truck and suffered severe physical and mental injuries, causing her to lose nearly everything—including the ability to walk and talk—but she held strong to hope and joy. After a 2 year break, I'm back to podcasting and excited to share with you what I've been up to since we last shared this space. For  7 years I practiced 1 style of yoga and taught 1 style of yoga, primarily.  And that's what I taught many of my listeners for years, and what you heard me talk a lot about when I started this podcast.  But for the past 2 years I have been shifting. Shifting the style of yoga I  practice now and shifting the way I serve beautiful souls like you.In this episode I tell you all about this transition that I made into teaching my own style of yoga and how I am now helping overachieving women with overcommitting tendencies use their body's rhythms and/or the moon's cycle to shift out of distraction, chaos, and burnout and into optimal productivity, balance, and focus, without giving up their action-oriented nature.I primarily do this through 1:1 virtual or in-person sessions, in the Energetic Rhythms for Intentional Living Facebook Community, and through online courses that have a coaching component. Should Christianity mix with yoga? Are yoga poses benign if we do them but don't engage in the spiritual practice behind them? This is the question I'm asking my guest, Jessica Smith, who taught yoga for many years. Jessica has a unique perspective and a solid biblical stance on this modern controversy. Yoga is one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophical traditions, yet many Christians today are practicing yoga with the belief that yoga's deep ties to Hinduism and Buddhism can be avoided. I will confess, I thought the same thing—but not any longer. Jessica challenged me and opened my eyes to the truth about this topic. Listen in. I pray your heart is blessed and encouraged as you strive to know God in a deeper way and bring Him honor in everything you do. Welcome to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them! In this Wednesday Q&A, we answer your questions about… Your questions:There is a popular yoga teacher who preaches about how the carrying angle of the forearm means that most people need to place their hands wider on the mat, thus wider than their shoulders in poses like down dog and plank. My logic is telling me this… yes, when the arm is in anatomical neutral, the carrying angle makes the hands wider than the shoulders. But when the forearm pronates like it does when you put the palms on the mat, does that mostly erase the carrying angle so that we should still align wrists under shoulders generally? What are your thoughts? My students really struggle with the transition from quadruped to half kneel and can't spend much time in any kneeling posture. Any tips or transitions through quadruped or to help them spend more time in a healthy and supported way on their knees? We use double mats and blankets under the knees as much as possible, but the limitations remain.I've been a yoga teacher since 2017 and an athlete my entire life. I had a tubing injury in 2012, and I do think that's impacted my SI joint. I always had issues as a hockey player, but the nerve issues only got bad with yoga. I took time off during COVID and my nerve issues improved, so I knew yoga made it worse. Getting back in, I practice now. I was more mindful in twists and bends, etc. But last week I had a severe episode and my osteopath told me my sacrum was rotated left. She did some work on it and my pain is now one out of ten, instead of ten out of ten. I couldn't sit, stand, or lie down without pain through my left lower back and glutes. I listened to some of your podcast episode episodes on anatomy. I'm curious how I can better protect myself from this happening again and often. I think backbends are the main trigger, but also deep forward folds and poses like half pigeon, extended slight angle with a bind, and even single leg airplane pose, and half moon on that side. In the warrior series, should I keep a wider stance and turn the back toe more toward the front and in warrior two, etc.? I appreciate your insight. If you are here, absorbing what I put into the world, you are actively engaged with your spiritual journey. The truth is, everyone is on a spiritual journey, but YOU are intentional about self-inquiry, self-awareness, and the process of your evolution. People often look to others for answers when they first awaken to the idea that there's more to life than what we've been told. But here's the thing, no one can tell you how, what, when, or where you should be doing this because there is no RIGHT way to do this. We are all completely unique, with a perspective that is all our own. Having teachers, guides, and mentors to help counsel and encourage you along the way is critical, but ultimately, you are the one steering your ship. Embrace the process.
