Ever bought a beautiful color-coded planner and abandoned it in 10 days? Jessica and Kelly get real about why aspirational, Instagram-perfect systems fail — and what actually works instead. This episode is about meeting yourself where you're at: building systems that are low-friction, flexible, forgiving, and repeatable, especially on hard days. Because social media isn't perfection, it's performance — and real systems need to expect a human, not a highlight reel. What We Cover Why perfect systems fail — Instagram and Pinterest systems assume consistency, predictable schedules, and stable moods, while real life includes hormones, travel, burnout, grief, and aging parents. If a system collapses under stress, it was never actually supportive. What real systems look like — low friction, flexible, forgiving, sustainable, and repeatable, not aspirational Trading elaborate for repeatable, with real-life examples: A 10-minute anchor habit (coffee, stretching, reviewing the day) instead of a 90-minute morning routine Three default dinners on rotation instead of an elaborate weekly meal plan A 15-minute nightly "closing shift" where everyone tidies a few things instead of a full nightly reset Two inbox folders — Action and Archive — instead of inbox perfection Three priorities a day (sticky note optional) instead of a complicated goal-tracking system The smallest-version question — asking "what's the smallest version of this that would still move things forward?" to get unstuck on things like replying to an email or text Habit stacking — attaching new habits to something you already do daily (like making coffee), rather than building something from scratch Real examples from Jessica and Kelly's own homes, including: A baby-step lunch habit (grabbing simple protein like turkey pepperonis or trail mix) instead of full meal prep Planning just three meals a week and shopping just-in-time instead of stocking up in advance A shoes-at-the-door system and laying out clothes the night before A weekly family scheduling check-in (including grandparents) to coordinate who's taking whom where The energy system check — asking "what kind of energy do I have today?" and adapting instead of punishing yourself for being human Free Resource The Organizational Style Quiz helps you figure out whether you're a visual organizer, a minimalist, a flexible stacker, or someone who needs more structure. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Kidnappings may be relatively rare in many parts of the United States, but when they occur, they can quickly become some of the most complicated and dangerous cases police officers investigate. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. For Brian Brady, retired Chief of Police for the Novato Police Department in California, one such investigation began with a violent attack at a tennis club. It developed into the kidnapping of a woman, an intensive police investigation, and several arrests. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. #LawEnforcementTalk #Free #Podcast #Radio Brady shares the remarkable case, along with stories from his extensive law enforcement career, during an interview on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast. The episode is available on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and other major Podcast platforms. It is also promoted across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and additional social media outlets. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin. The conversation explores the rescue of a kidnapping victim, the painstaking investigation that followed, and an unrelated barricade involving a mentally disturbed armed man. It also examines Brady's transition from police chief to corporate security executive and True Crime author. A Violent Kidnapping involving a California Tennis Club Management Couple The kidnapping case involved the attack of a married couple that managed a tennis club. What should have been an ordinary day suddenly turned into a nightmare when strangers confronted the couple. The husband was reportedly pistol-whipped, and his wife was abducted. The attackers were armed, violent, and willing to use force. Police were confronted with two immediate priorities: locating the kidnapped woman before she could be seriously injured or killed and identifying the people responsible for the crime. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. The conversation is available on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and most other major podcast platforms, where audiences continue discovering firsthand accounts from those who have lived them. “When a person is taken at gunpoint, every minute matters,” Brady explains during the interview. “The first concern is always the safety of the victim. At the same time, investigators have to begin preserving evidence and identifying everyone who may have been involved.” Unlike many kidnapping cases in which the victim and offender know one another, this case involved strangers. That created additional investigative challenges because there was no immediately obvious relationship or personal dispute pointing police toward a suspect. The victim had disappeared, her husband had been violently assaulted, and investigators had limited time to determine where she had been taken. Police Save the Kidnapping Victim The police response ultimately produced the result everyone had hoped for: officers found and rescued the kidnapped woman. Her safe recovery, however, did not end the case. Once the victim was protected, the focus shifted toward determining exactly what had happened, identifying every participant, and gathering enough evidence to support criminal charges. Brady describes police work as a process that frequently continues long after the most visible danger has passed. The public may see the rescue or initial arrest, but investigators must then reconstruct the crime in a way that will withstand scrutiny in court. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles. “The rescue is the moment everyone remembers,” Brady says. “But the investigation is what holds the entire case together.” Detectives needed to examine the original crime scene, document the assault on the husband, interview the victims and witnesses, and trace the movements of the kidnappers. They also had to determine whether additional people had helped plan or carry out the crime. Investigators could not afford to assume that the first person identified was the only offender. Kidnappings can involve drivers, lookouts, planners, and others who knowingly assist before, during, or after the abduction. The detailed investigation eventually resulted in several arrests. Three people were reportedly taken into custody in connection with the kidnapping. The Investigation and Several Arrests A successful kidnapping prosecution requires more than suspicion. Investigators must establish the role played by each alleged offender and connect that person to the crime through reliable evidence. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and most major Podcast networks. That evidence may include witness statements, physical evidence, photographs, surveillance footage, telephone records, vehicle information, fingerprints, forensic findings, and statements made by the suspects. Although Brady does not reveal every sensitive detail of the case, he emphasizes the importance of patience and coordination. “Complex cases are built one fact at a time,” he explains. “Investigators have to follow the evidence wherever it leads and avoid becoming locked into a theory too early.” Police also must consider whether the crime crosses jurisdictional boundaries. If a victim is transported across state lines or other circumstances bring the offense under federal jurisdiction, federal kidnapping statutes may apply. Under 18 U.S. Code § 1201, kidnapping can become a serious federal offense carrying severe penalties. California also has its own kidnapping laws and sentencing provisions. The precise charges depend on the facts, including whether a weapon was used, whether the victim suffered bodily harm, how the victim was moved or confined, and whether ransom, robbery, or another crime was involved. In the tennis club case, the violent assault, armed abduction, rescue, and eventual arrests illustrate why kidnapping investigations demand immediate action followed by methodical detective work. The case also demonstrates the emotional strain placed on victims. The physical rescue may occur within hours, but the psychological effects can last for years. When a Barricade Turned Deadly The kidnapping investigation was not the only critical incident Brady encountered during his law enforcement career. Earlier in his career, he tested for a police captain's position and was hired in Farmington, New Mexico. While serving there, he became involved in a dangerous call involving an armed, mentally disturbed man. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. The incident reportedly began when the man lost control and set his own residence on fire. As flames spread, the emergency became both a fire scene and an armed barricade. Police officers, firefighters, and tactical personnel faced an almost impossible situation. They had to contain the fire, protect neighboring residents, and attempt to prevent the armed man from harming himself or anyone else. Responders wanted to bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion. According to Brady, officers considered using a fire hose to disable or disorient the man without using deadly force. It was an unusual strategy, but the circumstances were anything but ordinary. “They were searching for every reasonable option that might end the confrontation without someone dying,” Brady recalls. “The goal was to create an opportunity to take him into custody safely.” The plan changed when the suspect returned carrying a gun. At that moment, the threat was no longer theoretical. An armed man was confronting police during an active fire and barricade situation. A SWAT officer ultimately shot and killed him. Extraordinary Efforts to Avoid Deadly Force Officer-involved shootings are often judged through short video clips, incomplete reports, or information released before an investigation is finished. Brady's account shows how much may occur before an officer fires a weapon. Police had attempted to contain the suspect. They considered less-lethal and unconventional methods. They tried to create time and distance. Yet the suspect's return with a firearm forced officers to react to an immediate threat. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast continues bringing listeners real conversations from the front lines of crime, policing, trauma, survival, and healing. “No officer arrives at a scene hoping it will end with a fatal shooting,” Brady says. “The objective is to protect life, including the life of the person creating the danger. But circumstances can change in seconds.” Armed barricades involving mental illness create especially difficult decisions. Officers must balance compassion for a person in crisis against their responsibility to protect firefighters, neighbors, fellow officers, and the public. Mental illness may help explain a person's behavior, but it does not make an armed threat less dangerous. When a suspect presents a firearm, officers have only moments to assess intent, opportunity, distance, surroundings, and the risk to innocent people. The Farmington incident remained memorable to Brady because of the extraordinary efforts made to resolve it peacefully, and because those efforts ultimately could not prevent a fatal outcome. From Police Officer to Police Chief Brady's law enforcement journey carried him through several very different communities. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Born and raised in San Francisco, he was inspired by the city's architecture, sports teams, traditions, neighborhoods, and colorful personalities. That environment later influenced both his police career and his fiction. His work took him from the eclectic streets of Berkeley to Farmington's Southwestern landscape and eventually back to the California Bay Area. He later became Chief of Police in Novato. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin. Each assignment offered different challenges. A police officer in a major metropolitan area may encounter problems that differ from those faced by officers in a smaller community. Yet the fundamental responsibilities remain the same: protect life, investigate crime, communicate clearly, and make difficult decisions under pressure. Leadership added another dimension to Brady's career. As a chief, he was responsible not only for individual incidents but also for agency policy, officer development, public trust, emergency preparedness, and relationships throughout the community. The kidnapping investigation and armed barricade illustrate the range of situations police leaders must understand. One case required detailed investigative coordination and several arrests. The other demanded crisis management during an active fire and confrontation with an armed suspect. A New Career in Corporate Security After leaving municipal law enforcement, Brady moved into the private sector and became a corporate security executive. His experience led to executive positions with prestigious organizations, including NBC Universal and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The transition may appear dramatic, but many skills learned in police work transfer naturally into corporate security. Risk assessment, crisis response, investigations, personnel management, threat prevention, and communication are valuable in both professions. The show is distributed through Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and other podcast platforms. Its interviews are also promoted across Facebook, Instagram, and other social media channels. Brady's career also brought him into contact with people from many backgrounds. Those encounters gave him a collection of personalities, conflicts, and stories that eventually inspired his work as an author. His professional journey became the foundation for a new form of storytelling, one that blends imagination with an insider's understanding of police work. From True Crime Experience to Fiction Brady entered the literary world with his debut novel, "Oh, What A Tangled Web", available through Amazon and Kindle. The Book introduced readers to San Francisco Police Department homicide inspectors whose investigations unfold against the city Brady knows so well. He continued their adventures in "Hiding In Plain Sight" and "Greed", his third Book, released in April 2025 by Palmetto Publishing. His fourth novel, Still Waters Run DEEP, was published in January 2026. It represents a departure from his familiar San Francisco setting and the SFPD homicide inspectors featured in his earlier work. Although the novels are fictional, Brady's law enforcement background gives him an understanding of police culture, investigative procedure, internal pressures, and the personal cost of confronting violence. His stories appeal to readers drawn to crime fiction, police investigations, mysteries, and True Crime themes. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles. “A writer never has to reproduce a real case to be influenced by a career in law enforcement,” Brady observes. “The emotions, the personalities, the difficult decisions, and the unexpected turns all stay with you.” The Influence of Joseph Wambaugh The Podcast conversation also examines Joseph A. Wambaugh Jr., one of America's best-known writers of police fiction and nonfiction. Wambaugh joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1960 and served for approximately 14 years, rising from patrol officer to detective sergeant. He also earned bachelor's and master's degrees from California State University, Los Angeles. His novels frequently featured Los Angeles police officers as central characters. Rather than portraying them as one-dimensional heroes, Wambaugh wrote about flawed, complicated human beings affected by the pressures of the profession. Among his most famous works are The New Centurions and The Onion Field. His writing earned three Edgar Awards, and the Mystery Writers of America named him a Grand Master. Comparisons between Brady and Wambaugh naturally emerge because both transformed police experience into storytelling. However, each author brings a distinctive voice, background, and perspective to the page. Wambaugh helped change how police officers were depicted in American literature. Brady carries that tradition forward by drawing upon his experiences in California, New Mexico, municipal policing, police leadership, and corporate security. Life in Sonoma County Brady now lives with his wife in picturesque Sonoma County. Both are San Francisco natives. The quieter setting offers a contrast to the energy and congestion of the city, while San Francisco remains only about an hour away. That allows the couple to return whenever they want to reconnect with its distinctive neighborhoods, culture, and atmosphere. For Brady, the distance may also provide the space needed to reflect and write. His life has moved through several chapters: San Francisco native, police officer, captain, police chief, corporate security executive, and published author. Each chapter contributed experiences that now shape his books and public conversations. A Podcast for Police and True Crime Audiences Brian Brady's appearance on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast provides much more than a summary of old police cases. It offers a firsthand examination of how police saved a kidnapping victim, conducted the investigation, and made several arrests. It also reveals the difficult choices officers faced when an armed, mentally disturbed man turned a fire into a barricade and deadly confrontation. The episode connects real police work with leadership, corporate security, books, crime fiction, and the lasting influence of writers such as Joseph Wambaugh. Listeners can hear the full interview through Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and other major Podcast platforms. Additional stories, photographs, and episode updates are available through Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and the show's other social media channels. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Brady's story is ultimately about far more than crime. It is about decisions made under extreme pressure, victims rescued from danger, investigators determined to uncover the truth, and a former California police chief who transformed decades of experience into a new career as an author. The badge may have represented one chapter of his life, but the stories did not end when his police career did. Most of us associate hospitality with perfection — the spotless tables, Pinterest-worthy decor, flawless hosting. But what if I told you hospitality isn't about aesthetics or personality traits? It's a reflection of God's heart — an act of obedience, invitations that echo Scripture's generosity and love, reaching beyond surface appearances to create genuine belonging, even in chaos.Brenda Pace, Director of Leadership Development at Planting Roots, shares powerful stories from military life — boxes, PCS moves, fleeting friendships — yet she reveals bold truths about how to practice hospitality anywhere, anytime. She debunks myths that hospitality is optional or only for extroverts, showing it's rooted in God's character, not our skills. You'll discover how embracing imperfection opens up space for real connection, how faithfulness trumps duration, and how fleeting seasons can deepen lifelong bonds. This episode is a lifeline for military spouses, busy moms, and believers craving authentic community. Brenda's insights will shift how you see your invitation to love and serve — not as a task to perfect, but as a divine opportunity to reflect God's invitation to us all.Perfect if you've ever felt overwhelmed by chaos, underestimated your ability, or hesitated to connect. Whether you're in the military or just longing for deeper community, this is your call to practice, not perfect — to invite, listen, and love with boldness because that's where God's presence dwells. After all, real hospitality is theological before it's practical, and it transforms lives one genuine invitation at a time. Are you ready to step into this divine calling? Hit play and discover the power of messy, beautiful, God-driven hospitality.

Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. What happens when the career a person believed would define the rest of his life ends in a single day? For John “Jay” Wiley, that question was not hypothetical. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. #LawEnforcementTalk #Free #Podcast #Radio This is a special episode where John "Jay" Wiley is a guest on The INNER Estate Podcast. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. Wiley was serving as a Baltimore Police Sergeant when line-of-duty injuries, from an act of violence while on duty, forced him into medical retirement. He did not leave policing because he had discovered an exciting new career opportunity or carefully designed a retirement plan. His law enforcement career ended because his injuries made continuing impossible. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin. The sudden change affected his health, income, identity, confidence, and sense of direction. Yet that painful ending eventually became the beginning of an entirely new life. Today, Wiley is the host of the nationally syndicated Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast. The program is carried by 148 affiliate AM and FM radio stations across the United States, reaching markets with a combined population of approximately 48 million. Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. His story demonstrates how skills learned in police work can transfer to business, broadcasting, sales, leadership, interviewing, and digital media. More importantly, it reveals the realities of starting over when the future looks nothing like the life a person originally planned. When Line-of-Duty Injuries Ended His Police Career Police work is more than a job for many officers. It becomes part of their identity. The badge represents authority and responsibility, but it also represents membership in a close professional community. Officers develop routines, relationships, and a sense of purpose built around protecting others. When injuries forced Wiley into medical retirement, he gained far more than a reduced paycheck. He lost the career he expected to continue. He lost the familiar structure of police work and the identity he had developed as a Baltimore Police Sergeant. That kind of transition can be difficult for people outside law enforcement to understand. Friends may see retirement as freedom, but forced medical retirement can feel more like something valuable was taken away. Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles. Wiley confronted a difficult reality: the career that had helped define him was over, but he still had to determine what came next. His experience raises a question faced by many injured police officers, military veterans, first responders, and professionals whose careers end unexpectedly: “Who are you when you can no longer do the job that became part of your identity?” Finding an answer required Wiley to separate his abilities from his former title. He was no longer working as a police sergeant, but he had not lost the experience, judgment, communication skills, discipline, and resilience developed during his years in law enforcement. The Realities of Starting Over Starting over is often presented as an inspiring adventure. The reality is usually far less glamorous. Reinvention can involve financial uncertainty, damaged confidence, unfamiliar technology, rejection, and the uncomfortable experience of becoming a beginner again. Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. Available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and most major Podcast networks. Wiley had already reached a position of leadership within the Baltimore Police Department. After medical retirement, he had to enter new industries where his former rank did not automatically establish his value. He had to learn new systems, expectations, and professional language. He also had to prove that his police experience could benefit employers and audiences outside law enforcement. That required humility. Starting over did not mean abandoning everything he learned as a police officer. It meant discovering how those skills could be applied in a completely different setting. Wiley's journey illustrates a truth that many people eventually confront: “A career can end without a person's value ending with it.” Why He Moved Into Sales After Law Enforcement After leaving police work, Wiley moved into sales. At first glance, law enforcement and sales might appear to have very little in common. One involves enforcing laws and responding to emergencies, while the other involves understanding customers and presenting solutions. But successful police officers and successful sales professionals rely on many of the same abilities. Both must communicate with people from different backgrounds. Both must quickly evaluate personalities and situations. Both must ask effective questions, listen carefully, recognize concerns, and establish trust. Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. Police work taught Wiley to speak with people during some of the most stressful moments of their lives. He learned how tone, timing, body language, and word choice could change the direction of an encounter. Those lessons transferred naturally into business. Sales was not simply about talking. It was about listening closely enough to understand what another person actually needed. Wiley discovered that some of the most valuable skills learned in police work had little to do with arrests or criminal investigations. They involved human behavior. “The ability to listen can be more valuable than the ability to speak.” That principle served him in sales and later became essential to his work as a radio host and podcast interviewer. Communication Skills Police Officers Bring Into Business Police officers regularly interact with victims, suspects, witnesses, attorneys, business owners, medical personnel, families, and members of the public. Each conversation requires a different approach. An officer may need to calm an angry person, comfort a grieving parent, question a reluctant witness, explain a complicated procedure, or persuade someone to make a safer decision. That work develops communication skills that can transfer to nearly every business environment. Former officers may bring strengths such as: Active listening Conflict management Clear verbal communication Emotional control Situational awareness Rapid decision-making Leadership under pressure Team coordination Detailed documentation Public speaking Interviewing and questioning Recognizing nonverbal communication These abilities can be valuable in sales, security consulting, management, customer service, media, training, and entrepreneurship. Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast continues bringing listeners real conversations from the front lines of crime, policing, trauma, survival, and healing. Wiley's success demonstrates why former police officers should not limit themselves to jobs that look like traditional law enforcement. The title may change, but the underlying skills remain valuable. Beginning a Broadcasting Career at Age 44 Wiley began working in radio broadcasting at age 44. Many people might assume that entering media at that age would be too difficult. Broadcasting rewards experience, but it also requires technical knowledge, performance skills, and confidence behind a microphone. Wiley had to learn how to communicate with an audience he could not see. Speaking into a microphone is different from having a normal conversation. The host must maintain energy, control pacing, organize thoughts, and make listeners feel included. Confidence did not appear automatically. It developed through repetition. Wiley learned by working, making adjustments, and continuing to show up. He gradually became more comfortable with his voice and his role as a broadcaster. His career challenges the belief that professional reinvention has an expiration date. “Starting later does not mean starting too late.” People often postpone a new goal because they believe everyone else has a head start. Wiley's journey demonstrates that age can also bring valuable advantages: maturity, experience, patience, perspective, and a deeper understanding of people. Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin. Knowing His Role Behind the Microphone Police officers are trained to take control when necessary. Radio hosts and interviewers must develop a different discipline. A powerful interview is not primarily about the host. It is about creating the conditions that allow the guest's story to emerge. Wiley learned the importance of knowing his role whenever he stepped behind the microphone. He needed to guide the conversation, ask thoughtful questions, listen for important details, and recognize when to stop talking. That final skill can be especially difficult. Some interviewers focus so heavily on their next question that they miss what the guest is actually saying. Wiley's police experience helped him listen closely, notice changes in tone, and pursue important details. His goal became making the program about the people he served. That included police officers, first responders, military veterans, crime survivors, family members, and people rebuilding their lives after trauma. “The strongest interviews happen when the guest feels heard.” The host may guide the discussion, but the guest's experience remains at the center. Launching the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast After years of developing his broadcasting skills, Wiley launched the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in 2017. The program focuses on real stories involving law enforcement, true crime, trauma recovery, first responders, crime survivors, and resilience after violence, loss, and life-changing events. The interviews go beyond headlines and statistics. They explore the human consequences of police work and violent crime. Guests discuss traumatic calls, shootings, injuries, investigations, wrongful accusations, family struggles, recovery, leadership, and life after the badge. Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. The show is distributed through Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and other podcast platforms. Its interviews are also promoted across Facebook, Instagram, and other social media channels. Wiley's work combines the different stages of his career. His police background helps him understand law enforcement culture. His sales experience helps him communicate value and build professional relationships. His broadcasting work helps him transform deeply personal conversations into compelling programs. What initially appeared to be separate careers ultimately became parts of the same journey. Turning a Podcast Into a Nationally Syndicated Radio Program Launching a podcast is relatively easy. Building one that lasts and expanding it into a nationally syndicated radio program is much more difficult. Wiley did not rely on one viral video or a sudden burst of attention. He built the program through consistent work. That meant regularly preparing interviews, recording episodes, editing content, promoting guests, developing relationships, learning social media, and improving the show's distribution. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast eventually grew into a nationally syndicated program heard on 148 affiliate AM and FM radio stations across the United States. Those stations serve markets with a combined population of approximately 48 million. That growth did not happen overnight. It came from treating broadcasting as a profession rather than waiting for a lucky break. “Consistency builds what viral success can only briefly expose.” A viral post can create an impressive spike in attention, but lasting growth requires a library of meaningful content and a reason for audiences to return. Wiley concentrated on producing stories that remained valuable long after their original publication date. An interview about trauma, recovery, courage, or rebuilding a life can continue reaching people for years. Someone may discover an episode months after it was released and hear exactly the message they needed at that moment. Learning Social Media and Technology Later in Life Modern broadcasting requires far more than speaking into a microphone. Hosts must often understand websites, podcast distribution, video, audio editing, search engines, email, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other digital platforms. Wiley had to learn many of these skills later in life. That process did not always come naturally. Technology changes rapidly, and every platform has its own terminology, algorithms, and best practices. The lesson was not that one person must master everything alone. It was that successful reinvention requires a willingness to learn, and the wisdom to recognize when someone else can help. Hiring the right person can shorten the learning curve. An experienced professional may accomplish in hours what a beginner struggles with for weeks. That does not remove the need to understand the business. It allows the business owner to focus more attention on the work that only he or she can do. For Wiley, that meant interviewing guests, telling stories, building relationships, and creating programs that served the audience. “Knowing when to ask for help is a business skill, not a weakness.” The Shared Love of Music, Radio, and Vinyl Wiley's journey also reflects the enduring power of audio. His shared appreciation of music, radio, and vinyl with Bridget connects the traditional world of broadcasting with modern podcasting. Vinyl records require listeners to slow down and experience the program differently. Traditional radio creates a sense of connection between the person behind the microphone and people listening across a wide geographic area. Podcasts extend that connection by allowing audiences to listen on demand. The technology has changed, but the power of the human voice remains. A sincere conversation can reach listeners through an AM or FM radio station, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram. The delivery method may differ, but audiences still respond to authenticity. Excellence in Media Award Wiley's work received national recognition when he was honored with an Excellence in Media Award from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The award represented more than professional achievement. It recognized his commitment to sharing stories connected to law enforcement officers, first responders, survivors, and families affected by crime and trauma. Awards can validate the quality of a person's work, but they rarely show the years of uncertainty, repetition, and quiet effort behind the achievement. Wiley's broadcasting success was built after the unexpected end of his police career. The recognition demonstrated how a person forced to leave one profession can still make a significant contribution through another. Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. Everybody Has a Story Worth Telling At the center of Wiley's work is a simple belief: “Everybody has a story worth telling.” Not every guest is famous. Not every story has received national media attention. Some involve moments known only to the people who experienced them. Yet those stories can still change lives. A police officer discussing trauma may help another officer seek treatment. A survivor describing recovery may give hope to someone trapped in a similar situation. A family member discussing loss may help another family feel less alone. Effective storytelling is not about turning people into entertainment. It is about treating their experiences with respect and helping others understand what those experiences cost. That focus has helped the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast create content that continues reaching audiences across radio, podcast platforms, and social media. Career Reinvention Is Possible at Any Age Wiley's story does not suggest that starting over is easy. Forced retirement affected his health, finances, identity, and sense of direction. Entering sales required adaptation. Beginning in radio at age 44 required courage. Building a podcast and turning it into a nationally syndicated program required years of consistent work. His journey shows that an unexpected ending does not have to become the end of a person's useful life. Skills learned in police work transferred to business because the most valuable lessons were not limited to wearing a badge. They included communication, listening, leadership, preparation, resilience, and service. Those skills helped Wiley rebuild. Today, John J. “Jay” Wiley is a retired Baltimore Police Sergeant, nationally syndicated radio host, podcaster, interviewer, and media professional. He has worked in radio for more than 20 years and has hosted the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast since 2017. Skills Learned in Police Work That Transferred to Business: and the Realities of Starting Over. Special Episode. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on their website, on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other social media platforms for more compelling interviews with police officers, investigators, authors, and first responders who reveal the realities behind the badge. His career did not follow the path he originally expected. It became something entirely different, and far larger than he could have imagined on the day his police career ended. Wiley's experience leaves a powerful message for anyone facing an unwanted transition: “Starting over does not erase the life that came before it. My testosterone is 312 ng/dL. By most standards, that's low. But instead of panicking, I sat down and asked myself a simple question: is it actually a problem? In this episode, I walk through my own testosterone journey from TRT and hCG to where I've landed today, and why I'm not rushing to fix a number just because it's low. I look at the tradeoffs I've noticed between higher and lower T: appetite, libido, resting heart rate, HRV, even risk-taking. I also lay out the honest self-assessment I think everyone should run before reaching for a prescription: are your energy, strength, body composition, and drive actually suffering, or are you just reacting to a lab result? This isn't a case against TRT. It's a case for knowing why you're doing it before you start. Thank you to this episode's sponsor, Peluva! There never has been.Because the most magical thing about your practice isn't how aesthetic it looks on social media...It's that it's authentically, unapologetically, wonderfully you.Now excuse us while we go wash out a pasta sauce jar.Apparently... it has a destiny.Support the showWe'll be back! Ever found yourself eyeing someone's “Pinterest pretty” homeschool and wondered if you're missing something? Today, I'm sitting down with Katy Wallace—our very own graphic designer at Homeschool Better Together—to pull back the curtain on what “real” homeschooling actually looks like. Katy is not just a talented visual visionary—she's an Alabama homeschool mom of teens, an accidental chicken-keeper, and someone who swore she'd never give up the corporate grind. (Spoiler: she did.)We're getting personal about how both of us landed in the world of homeschooling when it was NOT on our radar, how our school days have shifted as our families have grown, and what happens when your high schoolers start flying the nest. Katy shares how her creative side spills into her homeschool days (yes, there was sidewalk chalk involved), and why she never joined a co-op—plus how she deals with comparison and all the “shoulds” that come with doing things a little differently. We laugh about slow mornings and Southern accents, dig into why beautiful curriculum actually makes a difference, and talk honestly about sanctification, flexibility, and how homeschooling will expose all your perfectionist tendencies…and why that's not a bad thing. This one is for every homeschool mom who's wondered if she's the only one doing it her own way (hint: you're not). Join us for a down-to-earth conversation that will leave you feeling encouraged, seen, and a lot less alone. What you'll learn:Katy's totally unexpected journey from corporate life to rural homeschool mom and graphic designerThe “normal” (and not-so-normal) homeschool days—slow mornings, morning baskets, and navigating high school independenceWhat actually changes (and what doesn't) when your kids become teens and start dual enrollment or get part-time jobsWhy Katy never found a co-op that fit and how she avoids the comparison trapThe surprising impact beautiful curriculum design has on our homeschool mood and function (and how clutter really messes with us!)Pep talks on perfectionism, the myth of having it all figured out, and learning to embrace flexibility—even when you're more “planner” than “free spirit”How faith, prayer, and real-life messiness shape our days more than the right planner or perfect routineHonest talk on the sanctifying work of homeschooling (it'll grow you just as much as your kids)Resources Mentioned in This Episode:Put Your Homeschool Year on Autopilot (step-by-step planning system):The Elevate Program with Finishers Club + live planning accountability:Science TogetherHeaven is Having You by Giles AndreaeEpposumondas by Coleen Salley
