Not So Obvious Police Calls: From Domestics to Family Disputes. Many people imagine police work as a constant stream of violent crime, flashing lights, and clear-cut arrests. But according to retired NYPD Lieutenant David Goldstein, the reality of policing is far more complicated. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. “Most police calls are not obvious crimes,” Goldstein explains. “They're messy, emotional, and often fall into gray areas, especially domestics and family disputes.”  The Podcast is available and shared for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and most major podcast platforms. A Career Shaped by Urban Policing Goldstein is a retired Lieutenant from the NYPD who spent his career working busy urban precincts across New York City. Before returning home to New York, he served for two and a half years as an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. He later retired from the NYPD at the rank of Lieutenant, went on to serve as a University Police Officer, and eventually left law enforcement entirely. He grew up in New York, served as a U.S. Marines officer, and earned a degree in Criminology from Florida State University, a background that gave him both academic and street-level insight into Crime and policing. From Domestics to Family Disputes Throughout his career, Goldstein saw firsthand that many 911 calls are far from straightforward. Domestics and family disputes, in particular, often blur the line between criminal and civil matters. “People call the police because they're scared, angry, or overwhelmed,” he says. “But when we arrive, we often find that no crime has actually been committed.” He recalls a disturbing attempted child abduction investigation in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Although the suspect was ultimately convicted, Goldstein says the punishment felt inadequate given the seriousness of the crime. “That case stuck with me,” he notes. “It showed how the system doesn't always match the gravity of what officers and families experience on the ground.” He also describes a family dispute call involving a young child, the kind of situation where officers must balance enforcement, empathy, and restraint in a matter of seconds. The Reality of Not-So-Obvious Police Calls The concept of Not So Obvious Police Calls refers to the large number of incidents that do not involve active violence or serious crimes in progress. Research shows that more than 95% of police calls do not involve violence. Many calls fall under what officers refer to as “order maintenance”, noise complaints, suspicious behavior, public intoxication, or emotionally charged disputes. Dispatch information is often incomplete or subjective, making the response even more challenging. “We're sent in with limited information,” Goldstein explains. “By the time you arrive, the situation may be completely different than what was described.” An increasing number of calls also involve mental health crises or substance use, areas where police are frequently expected to act as first responders despite limited specialized training. Civil Cases vs. Criminal Cases Goldstein emphasizes that many domestics and family disputes ultimately turn out to be civil matters rather than criminal ones. “People assume police can ‘fix' everything,” he says. “But a lot of what we deal with are civil disputes, and no laws were broken.” Civil cases involve disagreements between private parties and are decided by a lower burden of proof, while criminal cases are prosecuted by the government and require proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Understanding this distinction is critical to understanding why officers sometimes leave scenes without making arrests. The Cost to Officers and Communities Responding to a constant stream of complex, non-clear-cut calls places a heavy burden on police departments. That usually means seed oils are used for cooking, sauces and dressings; that produce isn't organic; that poultry is low quality; and that most seafood is farmed. In other words, even meals that seem responsible on paper are often cooked in oxidized fats and paired with ingredients that quietly drive inflammation. In this episode, I explain why those hidden variables matter more than what's listed on the menu — and why even well-intentioned choices can work against you when food is prepared in an environment that was never designed to support your health. The real issue isn't an occasional meal out. It's how these small exposures compound over time. You don't feel it after one dinner — you feel it after years. And by then, most people blame the wrong things: carbs, protein, or entire food groups, when the real problem was never what they were eating but how it was being prepared. So what can you actually do about it? The most effective solution isn't exciting: when you know you'll be away from home, bring food with you. A lunchbox with leftover meat, eggs, fruit and simple whole foods beats a restaurant salad almost every time — and travels far better than most people expect. When eating out is unavoidable, the goal is to choose foods that are harder to mess up: plain red meat, simply cooked eggs, burger patties without sauces, and meals prepared with butter or olive oil when available.  Ironically, foods with a "health halo" — salads, grain bowls, plant-heavy dishes — often perform the worst once dressings and industrial oils become involved. Hace dos días Anas Sarwar, líder del laborismo escocés pidió la dimisión de Keir Starmer tras unos días difíciles en los que habían dimitido su jefe de gabinete, Morgan McSweeney y su jefe de prensa, Tim Allan. Por ahora la marea ha llegado hasta ahí, pero es posible que otros barones del partido se sumen a Sarwar y exijan un relevo en el 10 de Downing Street. Seguramente si no lo han hecho aún es porque todavía no ha surgido un candidato con posibilidades de hacerse con una quinta parte del grupo parlamentario, que es lo que se necesita para cambiar de líder del partido y de primer ministro. El origen de esta crisis, la enésima que sufre Starmer, hay que ir a buscarlo a Peter Mandelson, embajador en Estados Unidos hasta septiembre del año pasado, cuando Starmer decidió cesarle tras revelarse que había tenido una relación muy cercana con Jeffrey Epstein. Le había nombrado solo seis meses antes por indicación de McSweeney. Pero el asunto Mandelson es solo una piedra más en el saco de piedras que carga Keir Starmer a la espalda. Es el primer ministro más impopular de la historia del país, al menos desde que la popularidad se mide. No es del todo extraño. Nada ha mejorado en el país a lo largo del último año y medio, que es el tiempo que Starmer lleva en el poder. Heredó un país que atravesaba varias crisis encadenadas entre sí y se ha demostrado incapaz de encarrilar una solución para ninguna de ellas. También ha fallado a sus promesas. En campaña, por ejemplo, prometió no subir los impuestos a los trabajadores, pero esa promesa no podía permitírsela con el déficit y la deuda pública que el Reino Unido tiene en estos momentos. En 19 meses han pasado por Downing street dos jefes de gabinete, cuatro jefes de prensa y once ministros. Sin un proyecto coherente ni unas ideas claras sobre las que apoyarse, Starmer sobrevive a merced de los acontecimientos que, en ocasiones, derivan en escándalos. Las elecciones aún están lejos, pero si se celebrasen mañana las perdería por mucho para entregar el poder a Nigel Farage, líder de Reform UK, un partido que crece como la espuma a expensas de los conservadores. Lo más probable es que Starmer trate de aguantar todo lo que pueda mientras va entregando más y más poder al ala izquierda del partido para mantener el apoyo de sus diputados. God is a God of abundance, not scarcity—and His love is big enough to touch every place you fear not having enough. Jugaban los Patriots de Nueva Inglaterra y los Seahawks de Seattle, con victoria de estos últimos por 29 a 13. Pero el verdadero protagonista de la jornada no fueron los futbolistas, ni el partido en sí, sino el espectáculo del entretiempo que este año tenía como estrella invitada al popular cantante puertorriqueño Bad Bunny. Aunque no era el primer artista hispano en actuar en una Super Bowl (ya lo hicieron Shakira y Jennifer López en 2020, y Gloria Estefan en 1992 y 1999), Bad Bunny ofreció un espectáculo cantado casi íntegramente en español, algo que no se había hecho nunca. Interpretó varios éxitos de su repertorio reggaetonero rindiendo homenaje a la cultura hispana y, más concretamente, a la puertorriqueña. La escenografía recreó elementos de la vida cotidiana en Puerto Rico como un laberinto de caña de azúcar, una casa típica, ancianos jugando al dominó, un salón de belleza y boxeadores entrenando. Para el cierre, con banderas de todo el continente, clavó un balón de fútbol con la frase “Juntos, somos América”. La actuación se convirtió en una gran celebración de la identidad hispana apenas unos días después de que Bad Bunny criticase públicamente al Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas, el ICE, durante la entrega de los premios Grammy. Se llevó un total de tres, entre ellos el de mejor Álbum del Año por un disco completamente en español “Debí Tirar Más Fotos”, el primero en lograrlo en esta categoría. Esto enfureció al movimiento MAGA que le acusaron de ir contra la “grandeza estadounidense”. Donald Trump calificó el show como “absolutamente terrible” y “una bofetada en la cara” al país. Insistió en que nadie entendía lo que decía. Grupos del entorno trumpista como Turning Point USA organizaron incluso un espectáculo alternativo con Kid Rock que obtuvo cinco millones de visualizaciones en YouTube. La polémica no era nueva. Meses antes, en el programa Saturday Night Live, Bad Bunny recordó a la audiencia que tenían cuatro meses para aprender español, algo que ha hecho que muchos de sus fans angloparlantes se hayan puesto a estudiar este idioma. Hasta la app Duolingo ha aprovechado para lanzar una campaña utilizando el reclamo de Bad Bunny que, por lo demás, ese el artista más escuchado en Spotify de los últimos cuatro años. En buena medida Bad Bunny encarna como pocos el sueño americano. Ha pasado en solo diez años de trabajar en un supermercado en Puerto Rico a llenar estadios de todo el mundo, siempre cantando en español y con su propio estilo. Eso nunca molestó a casi nadie en EEUU, un país en el que la lengua española esta muy extendida y su uso muy normalizado.
