All their design roles (and there were loads) were limited to NY and SF whereas engineering for the same company has multiple remote openings. The Accountability Coach: Business Acceleration|Productivity
How the Choices We Make Impact Our Lives

The Accountability Coach: Business Acceleration|Productivity

Should I turn left at the fork in the road or right? Should I agree to take on a non-ideal client that could be more work than waiting for an ideal client? Is this new job offer right for me or should I stay where I am? Should I have the fish or the beef? The choices we make impact our lives – sometimes in profound ways, others in subtle ways. Sometimes, though, we feel overwhelmed at the variety of options ahead of us and we can't, or won't, make a decision. There is a song lyric that goes something like, “if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice.” I always find that profound especially at those times when I don't make a decision, or can't decide which decision is the “right” one. If you're faced with decisions regularly, and who isn't, it can be overwhelming. We can then start to suffer from decision fatigue. This state can impact us in small, or large ways. For example, if you get out of bed in the morning and the first thing you're faced with is a refrigerator or cupboard full of breakfast choices, your brain is going into overload before you've even truly started the day. Imagine you decided the night before, “I am going to have a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast.” When you do this, you start your day without having to make a decision and can save your decision making for when you're ready to start your workday. There are some choices you will make in your life that have the potential to impact you in profound ways. Let's explore three choices that I think might make a big impact: 1. The people with whom you surround yourself. The company you keep – professionally and personally – impacts how you see yourself, whether you're encouraged or discouraged by them and the type of influence they may exert. Jim Rohn wrote, “you are the average of the five people with whom you spend the most time.” Who are your people and how do they impact you? Are they positive or negative? Their outlook can impact your outlook – either good or bad. 2. How do you spend your time? In your 24-hour day what do you do? Do you work? Care for children or aging parents? Do you have hobbies? Do you have pets with whom you spend time? When you're not sleeping, what are you doing? You don't have to be continually productive, but you do want to find ways to spend your days that make you happy. You can spend your time sleeping on the couch or surfing the internet or you could spend your time with friends, reading a book, learning a hobby, growing a business, etc. 3. How do you react to the world around you? In the Serenity Prayer it reads, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” I take this to heart when I have to tell myself to let some things go. There are things in the course of my day I have no control over, and I can decide to fight against it or accept it. If I am invested in something and can effect change, I just might. I know the “wisdom to know the difference” makes an impact on my emotions and my happiness. Accept the fact that sometimes you will make bad decisions. Sometimes you will make a choice that you later regret. If you can go back and make a different choice, try that to see if a new outcome will make you happier. Know, though, that you cannot go back and rewrite your entire history – and would you want to? Your history has shaped who you are today, right now in this very moment. The choices you make, both large and small, are the foundation of who you are. Your choices have brought you to this point in your life. If you're happy, congratulations! If you feel the need to make better choices, now is the time to do just that! What are you waiting for? Aim for what you want each and every day! But first I want to thank you so much for your support this year. Thanks for listening to episodes, and thanks for reaching out to let me know how the episodes, the podcast, is helping you.  I hear from a lot of you on Instagram, how cool right? Remember, you can find and follow me @joyandrelevance on Instagram. I'm also on Pinterest, Civilla Morgan.  Sooo, January is already recorded! I can't wait for you to hear my conversation with Sarah Roberts. It is just the perfect way to start a new year! Be sure to tune in. Hey, tune in all year. And don't be a stranger. Your feedback really is a real source of encouragement.   I'm a history buff. I mean I love anything history. World history, the history of humanity, medieval history, art history. I mean I love history! In fact, one of my favorite podcasts is all about women throughout history.  So imagine my shock and surprise when I heard about this amazing woman!  You see, the woman I'm talking about today was childless and husbandless, like many of us. And that's what caught my eye. She had been mentioned on social media on the anniversary of her death. I believe it was a Google Doodle. I like to read the story behind Google Doodles because well, I love history and historical facts. But when they said she never married or had children, well, me too!  The timing of it all was quite interesting too. I had been reading lots of posts on IG, about the treatment by society of those of us who never married and never had children, in earnest, the last couple of months. I mean it's a thing, I'm living it, and have been for many years. But I had not heard much talk about it until the last few months as of this recording.  The pain in the posts was palpable.  Well, after a little digging, I found one book on Amazon which I promptly ordered. I had to wait a little bit for the book, which made me a little nervous, but it finally came. It is an interesting read. Information on the book in the show notes, as well as some additional informational links on this lady!  So here's the thing:  Childless, husbandless, and a dame. Mary Eugenia Charles' father started his life as a mason and then a farmer. He was snubbed by the elite, but that did not get in the way of his goals. He quietly went about the business of amassing wealth while the community looked down on him until he surpassed them in wealth. Her farmer father turned banker for the everyday person. His plan was to send his four children to the best schools. Two of them became doctors, one became a nun, against her parent's wishes. And Eugenia went to law school. Then she got into politics.  Oh, but imagine a woman getting into politics in the 1960s. You think it's a man's world now. She had to create a tough exterior to deal with men who definitely did not want her in their presence. They felt she was a deviant because she never married and never had children. They felt she belonged in a lower class because her father had to work his way up the class ladder.  She has been listed in Guida-Myrl Jackson-Laufer's list of ‘Women Rulers Throughout the Ages', listed among women such as Cleopatra, Mary Queen of Scots, and Isabella Queen of Spain; just to name a few.   But hey, she gave as good as she got, although it had to be tough to hear that she was sterile, wore cheap underwear, really? Ignored when she fainted in the midst of these sharks. But she survived.  She was indeed so successful at turning her country around, she ruled for 15 years, even surviving two attempted coups. Some of you may remember the invasion of Grenada back in the 1980s? She was an integral part of that. She brought battling factions in her country Dominica, not to be confused with The Dominican Republic. Two very different places.  together, and put strong people in her cabinet; which tells me she had a healthy level of self-confidence. Something I personally like in people I surround myself with. Just an aside.  Intriguing right?  I mean aside from the obvious that she was childless and husbandless? It is said that she never married because she never met anyone she wanted to marry.  These aren't the days of arranged marriage right? So she just never met anyone and sometimes that's just the way it is. Yet she made things happen despite the treatment she received, and despite not adhering to society's ‘norms'. I mean some people marry so that they are not lonely. Some people opt not to marry if they can't marry for love. Oh, this diehard romantic was shocked when I found out in my younger years that people married for all types of reasons and that love was just one of the reasons! The shock!  I also came to the realization that for me, I had no intention of marrying for anything less than love because when the going gets tough I have to know I love this person.  But that's me. So, how are you making stuff happen despite being childless or childless and husbandless? How do you deal with the people who watch you faint and ignore you? Or the people who accuse you of wearing cheap underwear? What about the people who spread assumptions about you? How will you deal? How do you deal?  Let me remind you... Those of us who are husbandless and childless are a family unit unto ourselves. I've said it before, a family is not only parents and kids, or husband and wife no kids. It can be you, just you. Human, worthy, single, childless, beautiful you.  Remember that this holiday season. You deserve a place at the adult table just as much as the couple or the parents. Your sleeping arrangements should not be an afterthought.   Now look, I realize you don't want to create drama at the family gatherings, and I don't want you to either. But I bet that's why some families believe they can treat the single childless family member as an afterthought. They don't believe you will make a scene. And you don't have to. If there is a problem, kindly pull the host aside and have a civil conversation. If you feel the conversation is going nowhere, feel free to adult and make alternate plans some years.  Look, we all want to see our family members, we all want to belong. But we have to decide if we want to belong so much we are willing to accept bad treatment gathering after gathering after gathering. Making alternate plans sometimes shows that you love and respect yourself. Please, love and respect yourself. Until you do, no one else will.  We are living in unbelievably difficult times. I mean family gatherings were difficult pre-pandemic. Now, everything has changed. Life as we knew it is no longer, no matter how much we want it to be all back to normal.  Normal is going to be different. And I believe the reason some of us are having a difficult time acclimating is that we are not moving ahead, but looking backward.  There was good back there, but there was also bad back there. There was dysfunction, there was petty behavior at family gatherings. And yes, there are good memories from back there.  But ahead, are good memories and good times. I have put links to the episodes mentioned in the feedback here in the show notes. I cannot tell you how much it means to me to hear from you when an episode or the podcast on a whole, has helped you on your childless not by choice journey. Podcasters do not ask for feedback because we are narcissistic. Feedback is an engine for us. I like to give you all little tidbits of insight into the world of podcasting from time to time. And in the world of podcasting, feedback is part of the engine that keeps us going. When I first started podcasting and I was not getting tons of downloads, I would sometimes ask myself why exactly I was doing this. No one is listening, I would tell myself. I am not hearing from anyone. And just then, so many times, just then, I would get an email, a message in Facebook Messenger, or an Instagram post from a listener thanking me for what I do. It never failed. Those messages helped. So when you send a message, know that I read it. In fact, I have responded to every piece of feedback I've received. **This episode is brought to you by MuteSix, Repeat, and CartText**   “To support women throughout their reproductive life,” says Victoria. Today we have Victoria Thain Gioia, Co-Founder of Perelel Health, a women's health company. What motivated her to start Perelel was her pregnancy. She learned that her daughter would be born with a cleft lip. Her doctor's found the defect was associated with a folic-acid deficiency early in her pregnancy that was not addressed with her one-size-fits-all prenatal vitamin. So she came together with her co-founder Alex to start Perelel Health. Both of them wanted to create a credible brand that supports women. They started during the pandemic with strict requirements and a strong vision of what they would include in their products.  She discusses: * Gratefulness * Overview of the company * Alex and her Background * Using folic acid * Methylated folate * Biggest challenges for the brand * Brand pillars Join Ramon Vela and Victoria Thain Gioia as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.

Science tells us that we're exposed to somewhere between 2 and 11 million bits of information per second, but we can only consciously process 50 to 60 of those bits. To simplify things, the unconscious mind creates shortcuts to size up information and reach conclusions efficiently.    That strategy works great for lots of things.   When you arrive at a traffic light, you don't have to think about what the red light means, and you don't feel confused about what to do when it turns green. Thanks to symbols and mental shortcuts, you can sail through many daily situations — no problem. Those mental shortcuts can serve us well — most of the time.   When it comes to relationships, though, those mental shortcuts can be a problem. It's easy for us to jump to conclusions based on our perceptions. We come to conclusions based on what we think we perceive in others' body language, behaviors, and tone. Then we act on those often erroneous conclusions, causing us to pull back, assume things we shouldn't, make bad decisions, or even alienate others.    As much as we may like to think otherwise, we're not mind readers. Not only that, everything that we do perceive is first filtered and then always distorted by our own experiences, beliefs, values, and perspectives.    Here's how we can make those filters less likely to limit us:   Recognize that you have biases, that you can never know the whole story. There's nothing personal about this. It's simply a reality based on how the mind works. Become more self-aware by recognizing your own beliefs, values, and biases. And, become aware of how you could do better.  Ask more questions. Instead of assuming, get curious. Ask for clarification. Ask for more details. Ask why.    This process will benefit all of your relationships — whether personal or for business. It will increase understanding and broaden your perspective, paving the way for better connections.     Thanks for listening!   To share your thoughts:   Leave a note in the comment section below Use the “I have a question” button Share this show on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn  Find Brenda on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube Links from today's episode:   Check out our awesome freebie section!   To help out the show:   Leave a positive review on iTunes. How do you cope with high-functioning anxiety as an entrepreneur or somebody who is self-employed? Today's Guest: Sandy Cruz Sandy Cruz is a Graphic Designer, Organizer, Computer Geek, and Instructor/Coach. She loves taking on new projects and is always challenging herself to learn new things. She's passionate about helping planners like you plan your year so you can live life on your own terms – and go after the big goals that feel meaningful to you. In 1999, she established Everything Custom Drapery & Design which was a full-service interior design studio catering to homeowners and designers. Everything Custom specializes in providing quality custom window treatments, soft furnishings, bedding, blinds/shades, and pillows with outstanding details for the home and business. During that time she developed a paperless system using technology in her business, her personal life, and everything in between. She began to see a need to support others and when word got out she started teaching live and online to large and small groups as well as private consultations. Her personal productivity system was turned into an all-inclusive course “The Paperless Office.” She started teaching through WFCP's (Window Fashion Certified Professionals) online webinars. Currently “The Paperless Office'' is a complete iSeries Six e-course, where students come and learn at their own pace on their own schedule. Her students each have their own virtual classroom with access to all the course content and resources in a comfortable and personal atmosphere where their progress is monitored and where help and support are available at their fingertips (literally) when needed. Since a very early age (3rd grade) she has been a planner. Year after year she looked forward to a fresh new planner. she planned with stickers and sticky notes using every color ink and highlighter imaginable. When she got my very first laptop in the early 2000's it was ON....she was on a mission to plan digitally but somehow keep a paper look and feel. She got closer and closer as technology grew. In 2007 she purchased a NetBook. Do you remember those? Small enough to fit in your purse and have it with you no matter where you were. She created a template planner that she could use in an application named OneNote. She even purchased some sort of pen gadget that allowed me to feebly write on the NetBook screen. And then 2010 along came the 1st Gen iPad. Do you hear music playing? The gap between paper and digital was finally bridged. The iPlanner was born! Today she is creating courses and developing digital products for those using technology with an emphasis on paperless, productivity, and organization. You can find her online on YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, FB, Hey Sandy Cruz Blog, trade shows, and live presentations for organizations across the United States. On this episode: Stacey is joined by graphic designer, coach, and scheduling phenom Sandy Cruz for a conversation on the approach to scheduling, the role of technology in the space, and taking charge of your life through your schedule. Key Takeaways: -Planning brings balance. -Technology is your allie. -Make room for goals, not just tasks. Tweetable Quotes: "I'm a creative. Everyday I get up and have the opportunity to be creative." -Sandy Cruz "If you have a purpose, it doesn't matter how many times you hear no. The yes is inevitable if you don't give up." -Stacey O'Byrne "Planning brings balance to your life." -Sandy Cruz "Dreaming up your big goals is the first step. Haley and her husband, Dr. Ismael, are graduates of the EBB childbirth class with EBB Instructors Marnellie Bishop and Ali Buchanan. For the birth of their baby, Josefine, they hired Marnellie and Marnellie's backup Ali Buchanan as their doula. Iz completed his general surgery residency at Oregon Health and Science University just 13 days before Josefine's arrival. A week after Josefine was born, the Grachico family moved to Grants Pass, Oregon, where Is joined a private practice general surgery group. Haley is enjoying time with Josefine and their two dogs, Duke and Bentley. Haley has since then started a new parents group in town and is exploring options to possibly become a doula and to support families in a different way in their new community. We talk about Haley and Dr. Iz's experience taking the EBB Childbirth Class, and the importance of them having a doula to help with their different perspectives on birth and medicine. “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” – Albert Einstein I did not love school.  School was actually some of the hardest days of my life.  And then I found glimpses of a different kind of info – about entrepreneurship, food, personal development, mindfulness, productivity, spirituality, magic …  It started somewhere near my 30th birthday with 3 books — Simplicity Parenting, Think and Grow Rich, and The Artist's Way. They opened my worldview and I became a lifelong learner. Fast forward 16 years … I am aware everytime I press submit on a podcast that I am adding more content into a world overflowing with content. I have a bookshelf filled with books, some (many) unread. I have a folder filled with eBooks. And then there is so much learning that lives in a cloud — courses, summits, audible books, and an inbox FILLED with ideas. Most of us accumulate more knowledge assets than we consume or implement. These days I do a lot of teaching — in FLOW365, on summits, on other podcasts, in other peoples courses. This has made me super conscious of my capacity to learn and implement.  Add pieces about FLOW, Monday Calls and Focus Sessions, Planning Sessions. I make an effort to learn and implement more than I teach. To do that, I have to make time and space for learning, growing and implementing in a way that fits in my life, so I thought I would share some of that back out… I decide what learning season I'm in depending on what I need instead of what the world might think I need. Start by knowing what you need – what change you want to make. I have gotten good at discerning between what I need to learn and what is a shiny object. If I buy a summit, I don't try to do it all. I look at all the talks and commit to the ones that will really support the change I am trying to make. I have a learning budget that is more about return on time than money. This season I dived into perimenopause and a partner program for PlanSimple — two totally different topics relevant to this season. I'm hopeful that the partner program will have a good return on money, but also in time (more partners helping me fill programs means less time doing it myself). Perimenopause isn't likely to bring me money directly, but it saves me time and helps me work through something that could derail me. Learning about food, parenting, coaching, running a podcast … all fit into different seasons for me, and that learning paid off whether or not you could see it in my bank account.  I balance learning between different learning modalities — audio that I can walk with, coursework that I am in front of a computer to do, reading and writing.  I keep a google sheet with all online material — name of course, link to sign-in page, username, password, expiration date. I check this spreadsheet before I buy something new, a trick I learned after buying my third Pinterest course. You may find another way to keep track of things, but I highly recommend organizing your learning material.  I decide when I will learn the material. Sometimes I get something I cannot do immediately, and sometimes I am ready to go right away. I always decide on my own timeline, so I don't feel behind. Once I learn it, I decide if (and when) I want to implement new ideas. I take notes by documenting to-dos, habits, and the most important thing. Just because you paid for a class or a book, doesn't mean you have to do it. You might find something that doesn't resonate or that one piece makes you say Yes and the rest falls away. Or you might realize that what you learned would be better implemented in another season. Documenting each lesson when you are learning is a way to remember what I need to know when it is time to implement. I'm all for learning broadly, because we don't know what we don't know, but too much learning without implementing can make us feel behind or like something should be different but...

Today we have Michele Davis, Co-Founder of Cocacao, a chocolate brand. Michele has a background in accounting, while her husband Jeffrey has worked in restaurant and project management. Michele's husband went on a restricted diet, so he came up with chocolates that fit everybody's dietary lifestyles. Cocacao creates chocolate with only three to five simple ingredients. Having a positive attitude and visualizing good things kept them moving after experiencing tragic events in their lives. Michele recommends that new founders learn to network, talk to people, ask questions, and, whenever possible, talk face-to-face to get customer feedback. In the first half, she talked about: * Gratefulness * Overview of the company * Death, Divorce, and Chocolate - The origin story * What motivated them * How to face hurdles Join Ramon Vela and Michele Davis as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand. In the spur of the moment, a simple argument can go out of hand if we focus on proving that we are right rather than seeking to understand our partner's emotional needs. We basically just listen so we can rebut. Whilst it does seem to be clever, it is not the same as understanding. So, what can we do to change that? Shari Foos dives into what Relational Mindfulness is and how we can apply it to create meaningful connections in both romantic and non-romantic relationships.  Shari Foos is a licensed marriage and family therapist and creator of The Narrative Method. She holds an MA in clinical psychology from Antioch University, Los Angeles, and a Master's in Science in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University.  A sought-after expert on the subject of relationship and meaningful connection, Foos' writing and commentary have appeared in a range of online and print publications including Real Simple, Huffington Post, Women's Health, KBLA, Fatherly, LA Weekly, and Bustle. Check out the transcript to this episode in Dr. Jessica Higgin's website. In this episode 04:53 Shari explains what Relational Mindfulness means. 09:06 Steps that you can do to regulate your nervous system enough to suspend and to engage in this practice. 26:17 Shari elaborates on The Narrative Method. 41:16 How to connect with Shari. Great marketing goes beyond traditional marketing strategies. We have been in a whole new era of online and offline marketing that allow you to market one-to-many for the best results. You don't need expensive marketing resources to produce great results. So, over the next 10 days we are going to explore 10 No-Cost and Low-Cost Ways to Market Your Business. Tip #1: Reach Out to Strategic Partners Strategic Partners are a complement (not competition) to your business (as your business is to theirs). Provide an Ideal Client Description and ask if they know someone who is an ideal fit. If they do know someone who would benefit from working with you, ask them to pass along your contact information to the prospect. (Asking for the prospect's contact information - and contacting them directly - may not always be appropriate. Follow the Strategic Partner's client privacy policy before contacting the prospect.) Last but not least - return the favor. Tune in tomorrow for the 2nd No-Cost, Low-Cost way to Market Your Business.
