The Dead Buddhas stopped by Fox Cities Core on Code Zero Radio (WCZR) to celebrate the release of their debut album Sludge Americana.The Dead Buddhas are a band from Oshkosh, Wisconsin — Connor (vocals/guitar), JT (bass/vocals/recording & mixing), and Kevin (vocals/guitar) — who have been playing together since their high school days at Oshkosh West. They describe their sound as "sludge shoegaze" — a genre-bending collision of heavy, abrasive noise, dreamy post-rock atmospherics, and rootsy Americana influences. Think Black Sabbath meets the Grateful Dead, with a healthy dose of Johnny Cash and Korn thrown in for good measure. There's no single frontman here — all three members share vocal duties, which means any given song can swing from delicate, melodic singing to full-on aggressive screaming. Listening on headphones is strongly recommended.Sludge Americana was recorded and engineered at TR's Recording Studio in Oshkosh, a space the guys have deep connections to through longtime Fox Valley music community figure Uri Weber. JT handled all the recording, mixing, and mastering himself — a testament to the band's fully DIY approach. The album was written mostly on acoustic guitars, which is actually how the album got its name: when Connor and JT first started playing those heavy riffs acoustically, they looked at each other and said, "that kind of sounds like sludge Americana." The name stuck.In this interview we get into the full story — from their early open mic nights at New Moon in Oshkosh (where they were influenced by artists like Sarah Vos Winkle of Dead Horses and Nick Raymond of Traveling Suitcase) to their previous projects (Trying Tribals, Everything Went Silent... don't look those up, they said), to the making of Sludge Americana and what's coming next. Another end, and another beginning. Aquarius and the first half of Imbolc are over, and we approach the New Moon, the start of Pisces, and the start of the New Lunar New Year. As we pass through this portion of the Wheel, we pass through some very important fixed stars. This collection of stars always reminds me of the Martin Luther King, Jr. quote “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” But a loving reminder, dear Heathens, it does not bend by itself. Our deeds are the force that bends it, or not. Scorpio Last Quarter Moon (Feb. 9, 4:43 am PST) at 20°46' Scorpio-Aquarius. This is the last action point for the Capricorn New Moon (Jan. 18) at 28°43' Capricorn. The Moon's Sabian symbol, 21 degrees Scorpio, is A soldier derelict in his duty. The Sun's Sabian symbol, 21 degrees Aquarius, is A woman disappointed and disillusioned. What you're willing to face now can determine how fully you're able to step into the next chapter. [4:53] Lunar Phase Family Cycle (LPFC). This is the Last Quarter in a LPFC that began with a New Moon on Nov. 13, 2023, at 20°43' Scorpio. The First Quarter (first action point) of this LPFC was on Aug. 12, 2024, at 20°24' Scorpio. The Full Moon (awareness point) in this LPFC was on May 12, 2025, at 22°12' Scorpio. [6:30] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. The Moon in Scorpio squares Venus in Aquarius (Feb. 9, 11:01 pm PST). It's VOC for 21 minutes, then enters Sagittarius (11:22 pm PST). Take an honest look at your finances and your relationships, then see how you can create more financial and emotional security for the future. [7:22] The Moon in Sagittarius squares Saturn in Pisces (Feb. 12, 11:29 am PST). It's VOC for 15 minutes, then enters Capricorn (11:44 am PST). [9:52] Venus enters Pisces (Feb. 10, 2:19 a.m. PST) and will be in this sign of her exaltation until March 6. The Sabian symbol for Venus' ingress degree into Pisces is 1 Pisces, A public market. This Aquarius eclipse is the first in the 2026 eclipse season. It is also the first eclipse cross the Leo-Aquarius axis, starting a new pairing of eclipse signs over the next two years.
