The Ouchmonkeys Podcast is inspired by Studs Terkel's verbatim writing and the rising prominence of the ‘podcast’ as a medium of long-form discussion. I talk with awesome musicians, producers and sound engineers (amongst others) about creativity, inspiration, practice and loads of other interesting stuff. Â
A conversation with my friend, sound engineer, musician and music researcher Clive Mead. We discuss the history of sound engineering, the recording studio and music. Visit https://soundcloud.com/clivemead
A conversation with guitar great Tim Renwick - session guitarist for Elton John, Eric Clapton, Tom Jones and Pink Floyd's live band (to name a few). I drove to Cornwall to talk to Tim about his life in music, discussing guitars, touring and life in the studio. Visit https://timrenwick.com
After a long break, welcome back to season two of the podcast. For this episode, I travelled back to London to interview American actor, dancer and movement director Sophia Priolo (http://www.sophiapriolo.com/). Sophia and I are collaborating on a PhD project exploring creativity, music, art and movement. Our conversation explores these themes.
For this episode, I took a drive to the other side of London to interview Robin (Grippa) Laybourne in his Greenwich recording studio. Grippa is a talented sound engineer, producer, and musician - releasing records under the moniker: The Hempolics (https://www.hempolics.com ). I have worked with Grippa for many years on various projects (Faithless, Dido, Dusted, etc.), and our conversation sheds light on his (sometimes unorthodox) working methods and studio expertise.
In this episode I talk to the musician and singer Gerry Griffin. We discuss music, creativity and songwriting in relation to the making of the Plan -K album: Memory Palace - a band formed by Gerry and myself. Various links to the album may be found here: Plan K.
This episode is a little different. I discuss music and art with the artist Gareth McCorry - who happens to be my older brother. I've managed to rope him into collaborating with me on a project for my MA - in which we intend to interpret one of his paintings (with the help of Max/MSP/Jitter) into a piece of music. In this episode we discuss and describe a few of Gareths paintings. I've uploaded a supplementary video: https://youtu.be/YWwat8bGJos so you can visualise the work.
In this epode I discuss a life in music, and guitar building with my good friend Tom Gray. Tom is an internationally respected luthier, great guitar player, and former music teacher. For more info on Tom's work visit: http://www.grayguitars.london
Episode 3 and I'm talking to the brilliant Benjamin Richeton about his musical journey. From school days in France to brass bands in the north of England, Ben describes his path to becoming a top cornet player and music educator. Check out the following YouTube link to see Ben performing live with the superb (and world famous) Black Dyke Band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EClOIrJpX08
In episode two of the podcast I talk music with Dr. Robin Dewhurst – Head of Music at Salford University.
In this episode of the podcast I talk to PhD student James Stone about his journey through the world of music - from brass bands to academia and his innovative song writing techniques.
This is a brief introduction thing for the Ouchmonkeys podcast - a podcast for musicians (and anybody else).
