My guest today has blazed a trail through the British poetry scene ever since her work was first published in 1991. Born in Edinburgh, Jackie Kay MBE was brought up in Glasgow by her adoptive parents, Helen and John Kay, of whom much more later. She has had countless poetry collections, short stories and novels published to acclaim, as well as her glorious memoir Red Dust Road which tells the story of meeting her birth parents. The winner of over 20 awards, Jackie is a professor of creative writing at Salford University and for five years she was the Scottish Makar (that's basically poet laureate). Her new collection May Day is an elegy to her beloved parents who (died within a year of each other) and taught her the meaning and power of protest. Something Jackie took to heart marching for women's rights, gay liberation and Black Lives Matter.I went to Glasgow to meet Jackie while she was on tour. Her beloved older brother Maxie had just died and she spoke candidly about love, loss and absence, living with nothing between you and the sky and how poetry helps her survive. We also discussed coming back into yourself in your 50s and 60s, why there should be lists after white male writer's names, the art of living together apart and why her emotional age is 150!* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including MayDay by Jackie Kay and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. What's the episode about? In this episode, hear author and vocal coach Clare Hogan discuss death anxiety, breath work, transpersonal psychology, performing death, death cafes and seeing death as an adventure and gateway to more life. Who is Clare? After completing her GMus at the Royal Northern College of Music, Clare went on to do a Masters by Research at Keele University. It was there that she discovered an interest in psychology. Whilst still researching for her MA, Clare started tutoring at Keele and later at Salford University. Clare devised and has run the Master's course 'Psychology of Performance' at Salford for over 20 years. Clare is an expert in classical and operatic technique and has a keen interest in helping those suffering from anxiety and/or stage-fright. Her latest book, Performance and Purpose in Death and Dying, was written over three years in response to the growing need for a sense of purpose in the wake of so much destruction and devastation, with the aim of communicating the message that there is no death as we commonly perceive it, and there is nothing to fear. It developed and grew from the courses, classes and the Death Cafes that Clare has delivered and facilitated. The Alchemy of Performance Anxiety: Transformation for Artists was published in 2018, also by Free Association Books. How do I cite the episode in my research and reading lists? Eddie Weir PCIAT, President of CIAT, says: "I am delighted and looking forward to attending the International Congress on Architectural Technology at ATU Galway in my capacity of CIAT President. The built environment plays a crucial role in how people understand and value the world around them and the essential pivotal discipline of Architectural Technology is at the centre of this. I look forward to meeting those who are transforming the built environment with their forward-thinking initiatives on Architectural Technology. The student event on the first day, Thursday 18 January, will see Ireland's top Architectural Technology students work in groups (teams of six) all day to develop a detailed project and presentation as part of the inaugural national student competition in consultation with CIAT and ONOM for Best Application of Sustainable Materials, Best Demonstration of Buildability of Assembly and Overall Winner. International authors this year have researched topics across many areas, demonstrating the next evolution of architectural technology transformation. Presenters and attendees are excited to learn about new uses of technology in conservation architecture, building material passports for the circular economy, enhanced fire evacuation opportunities, augmented reality applications for deconstruction surveys, sustainable material choices, as-built monitoring of design choices to reduce service loads, flooding mitigation using blue-green roofs, as-built moisture monitoring and control of building fabrics, fabric first approach options for deep retrofits, Enerphit, and Passivhaus projects, and the use of artificial i...
Figen was born in Istanbul and moved to Germany at the age of two in 1963. Twenty years later, she moved to the UK for a new adventure. Now, a mother of five children and grandmother to five boys, she resides in a peaceful part of south Manchester with husband of 30 years and counting, Stuart. For over 23 years, Figen worked as a counsellor, a life coach and offered clinical supervision to other counsellors too. She has always had a passion for listening to other people's troubles - helping them get back on track to lead happier, healthier lives is a role she finds both challenging and rewarding. Following the decision to no longer continue her work as a counsellor, Figen is now committed to promoting peace, kindness and tolerance in Martyn's memory, whilst also working towards tangible changes that can help to ensure no other family has to go through what hers did. Figen started knitting bears a couple of years before Martyn died. She originally started knitting to look after her own mental health when she developed hearing loss on one side - it helped to keep her mind occupied and prevent her slipping into depression. Martyn helped boost recognition of her bears in 2016 when tweets about the teddies went viral on social media. Her online Depop shop, "Imperfect Hearts", sells knitted bears with anxiety, OCD, schizophrenia and sometimes just mundane day-to-day issues that her customers can relate to. When we grow up, we often forget how to play, so Figen believes every adult should own a teddy bear to bring an element of playfulness back into our lives and help put issues into perspective. She has now sold hundreds of them, which have made their way across the world. Her book “Bears Have Issues Too” helps to shine a light on the mental health of adults through her professional knowledge as a counsellor and her more personal, lived experience. In 2017 she created Jordan Bear in Martyn's memory and set up a Facebook page dedicated to his travels across the world. Figen is the force behind Martyn's Law, a legislation which will require venues with a capacity of 100+ to improve security against the threat of terrorism, train their staff with free online training provided by the government, and one that requires all venues have a counter-terrorism plan in place. This began in early 2019 in Figen's kicthen as an online petition which received over 23,000 signatures. Since then, Figen has been working with a team of co-campaigners and meeting government officials and ministers regularly to formulate how her vision would be put into practice and implemented as law. During this time, Figen also completed a Master's Degree in counter-terrorism which helped her to gain a sound knowledge base on what exactly was needed out of this legislation in order for it to work best. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Salford University in 2022, and additionally made a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Strategic Risk Management (ISRM). In recognition for her efforts within the security industry, Figen was awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award at the 2020 Counter Terror Awards. She is also a member of the Senior Leadership team at TINYg. Her biggest and most proud achievement so far is being awarded an OBE in the 2022 New Year's Honours List. Whilst none of the work she does is done with the intent of self-gain, receiving her OBE made Figen aware that the work she does is being both noticed and valued, which is humbling and gives her the motivation to continue.
James Paul Watson (known as Paul) joined the Irish Guards straight from school and completed 6 operational tours including Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He sustained a spinal injury in Afghanistan, which ultimately led to his medical discharge from the British Army in 2015. He immediately enrolled at Salford University where he graduated in 2018 with a degree in Political Contemporary History before being elected as a local councillor. Whilst at university, Paul began to become disillusioned with society's relationship with the veteran community - specifically how our injured veterans are dependent on charities for support post-service.Paul fundamentally believes that it is the responsibility of local and national government to provide for our veteran's aftercare, as it was the politicians and not the charitable sector that send us to war, hence, the accountability lies solely with them. Paul was diagnosed with complex PTSD in 2017 and uses his platform to promote positive mental health by being honest and open about his own battles with PTSD.In 2021, Paul released his memoirs where he challenges the MoD's policy regarding the mental health of both serving personnel and veterans, and in 2022 founded the Ex-Forces Union to lobby on behalf of our veterans.LINKS:Join our Facebook Group community here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2314725475490967/Engage with us on LinkedIn here:https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13628154/Insta/Twitter/Facebook: @CampaignForceUKor email the host jonny@campaignforce.co.ukhttps://www.exforcesunion.org/OP Courage: Mental health support for veterans, service leavers and reservists - NHS (www.nhs.uk)Combat Stress is the UK's leading mental health charity for veterans Call them on 0800 138 1619, text them on 07537 404 719 or email helpline@combatstress.org.uk.Support the show✅Support The Show Help Us Grow! For many of us, our closest encounter with wild animals is at a zoo. These places allow us to observe the behaviours and characteristics of amazing creatures from big cats to tiny amphibians. It's an enjoyable and educational experience for us, but is it the best environment for the animals? A long time ago, people could only see wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum. Later, live animals were captured by explorers, brought home and put on show to the public in menageries – animal welfare was not a priority. But modern zoos and wildlife parks have transformed the conditions and environments for animals, making bigger enclosures, removing bars, and, to some extent, mimicking their natural habitats. Some people have questioned the cruelty of keeping animals captive and using them just for entertainment, but zoos are keen to show they are here to help wildlife by educating us about conservation. In the UK, the introduction of The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 also required zoos to educate the public. Well-managed zoos are now also involved in supporting and funding conservation programmes. Probably the biggest claim from zoos today is that they help to protect species that are under threat in the wild due to climate change. Robert Young, Chair in Wildlife Conservation at Salford University says: "There are quite a lot of different species around the planet which we wouldn't have today if it wasn't for zoos." Some zoos have captive breeding programmes which help to preserve the future of species that would otherwise face extinction. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently praised Chester Zoo in the UK for its conservation work. It brought a "rare fish species back from the dead" after breeding and releasing a school of golden skiffia fish back into their native river. While the debate about having zoos continues, new opportunities to meet wildlife are being explored, such as using virtual reality, and Jon Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC: "Taking a walk through a herd of elephants in the Serengeti, I think, is going to be possible pretty soon."
Western countries, mainly the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany, are supposed to be sending tanks to Ukraine, to help its valiant fight against Russia. There are two points to consider here. The first is that despite the original enthusiasm and the display of a united front to help Ukraine, these Western may not be arriving anytime soon - save for Germany. The second is that if and when the tanks do arrive in Ukraine, their true effectiveness may not be much more than propaganda value - at least initially so! Measuring Heat pump system design with Brendon from HeacolLink to slides for the test can be found hereTHE TEST RIGBrendon discusses how he first designed the test rig with Ulster University for testing the heat pump he had built which is specifically adapted for UK climate, the UK's building stock and how the homes in the UK are commonly heated e.g. a combi boiler. When RHI was first introduced, it required heat pumps to have costly certification and sadly Brendon's heat pump had to be put on the back burner... after all, Brendon is extremely busy installing heat pumps for people and has been putting heat pumps in for many years. (Note, if you are an investor in innovation you'd do well to contact Brendon to discuss this heat pump)The test rig uses a 500L thermal store to simulate the internal of a property "it's got inertia, it's got thermal capacity and it's got buffer " A plate heat exchanger connecting the thermal store to the heat pump simulates a radiator system which can have temps and flow rates changed. Brendon describes how this set up is able to run different testing than the excellent Energy House at Salford University and benefit from quick responses to different heating stratagies and scenarios. TESTING SYSTEM DESIGN testing a heat pump system with 3rd party controls and buffer tanktesting a heat pump system with weather compensation and buffer tanktesting a heat pump system with weather compensation and no buffer tank e.g. open zone or what has been called direct in the test which can be found hereThe test simulated a house with an 11.5kW heat load. With the first test the heat pump had to run at 50 degree Celsius flow to maintain an internal temp of 21 degrees. In the second test the flow temp dropped to 45d.The final test, with open zone system, no buffer and controlled with manufactures wether compensation controls only required a flow temp coming from the heat pump of 35 degrees CSupport the show

Dr Jen Unwin and Heidi Giaever Dr Jen Unwin Dr Jen Unwin is a chartered clinical and health psychologist. She worked for over 30 years in the NHS and now spends her time researching, campaigning and writing about sugar addiction. She is a founding member of the Public Health Collaboration, a UK charity campaigning for better public health advice. Her and her husband Dr David Unwin, a GP have been helping the patients in his practice adopt low carb diets to reverse their diabetes. This work has resulted in several published papers and numerous conference and media appearances. She has recently published a book called 'Fork in the Road' which is a guide for people with sugar/carb addiction. All profits are for the PHC. Heidi Giaever Heidi comes from Norway and spent part of my childhood in East Africa. With her original degree (Salford University, UK) in Chemical Engineering she spent most of her career in international business development. She retrained in Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine following a personal health scare in her early 40s. She underwent extensive tests for early onset dementia, following a prolonged period of increasing memory and concentration problems with a direct impact on her work capacity and performance resulting in plummeting self-confidence. Years later, she met Dr Jen Unwin and Food Addiction Specialist Bitten Jonsson. She and Jen trained with Bitten. She then understood that her problem was food addiction. It wasn't from poor nutrition as a child, but from an unchecked desire and exposure to sugar. She learnt to bake as a child, learnt to love the whipped sugar and butter bases for cakes and biscuits. This exposed her brain and body to ever increasing amounts of sugar without visible effects on her weight. Now she is a food addict in remission, focusing on “Life With and Beyond the Food”. She and her husband moved to the UK almost 9 years ago and she started voluntary work in the most deprived areas of Crawley, West Sussex. She worked with nutrition in community centres and preschools focusing on building awareness of the dangers of hidden sugars and the value of feeding children real foods. Since then, most of her work has been with mature adults, running diabetes reversal programmes for GP surgeries in Sussex and with private clients wanting help with weight, metabolic challenges and Food Addiction. Heidi now works closely with Jen on initiatives to bring formal recognition of this disorder and to contribute to the lack of clinical evidence of recovery and support programmes that can help sufferers. One such initiative is their Food Addiction Recovery Clinical Study, FARCS, where, together with Dr Jen Unwin and other colleagues in Sweden and North America, they offer group-consultation based programmes and they hope to achieve statistical significance so that that they can contribute valuable data to the current lack of clinical evidence in this field. Another main focus for her nutrition and lifestyle work has resulted in the Collaboration for Kids (CFK) project, which she leads under the umbrella of the Public Health Collaboration. Dr Jen's Top Tips If you are a food addict the treatment is abstinence. You have work out which are your drug foods and exclude them. Not just what you eat but how you eat, what are the addictive behaviours? Eat foods that nourish your body and brain without being restrictive. Heidi's Top Tips Analyse - take the time to look and analyse what is going on with you. Beyond the food - you need to fill your life with living not just food. Act - get active in this field. In 1964 a theoretical physicist called Peter Higgs suggested a mechanism via which elementary particles of a new theoretical scheme could obtain mass. It had been a thorny mathematical stinker in the framework that today we now call the standard model of particle physics. Ten years ago this July, the particle this mechanism predicted, the Higgs Boson, was confirmed to exist in experiments conducted at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Prof Frank Close, whose new book - Elusive - is published this week, is a friend of Peter's. The book describes the background to Higg's idea, and how a generation of physicists worked to test it and identify it. He and Prof Malcolm Fairbairn of King's College London discuss the significance at the time, what we we've learned since, and what we might in the future. As covid cases are on the rise again in the UK, Prof Jonathan Ball gives Marnie his observations on the current variants. Prof Trevor Cox, acoustician at Salford University describes his part in a collaboration to design a new type of DIY facemask that still allows people to see your lips moving as you speak, whilst also muffling your words far less. It was developed with collaborators at University of Manchester, and also by Salford's Maker Space, and you can download plans and a video and have a go yourself at the link from our programme page. An article in Nature food recently suggested that our estimates of food miles, the carbon footprints we assign to the foods we eat, may have been underestimated and could be 3.5 times what was previously thought. But does that change the choices we make in what we buy? Presented by Marnie Chesterton Produced by Alex Mansfield

[Transcription]: My name is Emma, and I am part of the University of Salford. For me, a vital area for society to focus on is inclusivity. I believe people excel when they feel comfortable, when they feel supported and when they feel a part of something that's bigger than themselves. We can learn such a lot from looking at the world from other people's perspective, through sharing ideas and having open and frank discussions. Salford University has done such a lot of work in this area and I look forward to our work in developing this in the coming years.

Beyond its monetary value, it is also something which millions of people enjoy watching and playing - but how important is it in the current crisis?Contributors: Kieran Maguire, Accountancy and finance Lecturer from the University of Liverpool.Alex Culvin, Senior Lecturer in Sports Business from Salford University. The usual western sponsors in this years World Cup have largely been replaced by Asian brands. Why?FIFA makes most of its money from selling the broadcast rights to the World Cup, and through corporate sponsorship. But this year fans won't be seeing as many of the usual brands they're used to on billboards and adverts. Instead, they'll be seeing a lot of...well, Mongolian yoghurt as Simon Chadwick Professor of Sports Enterprise at Salford University in Manchester tells Manuela Saragosa. She also hears from Toby Hoare, CEO of J Walter Thompson in Europe, a marketing communications company which advises large global clients on how to manage their brands. Plus Sean O'Connor, co-founder of Statsports tells her about the tech players will be wearing this year.(Picture: A girl standing in front of an advertisement by a Chinese dairy company sponsoring the 2018 Football World Cup, at a subway station in Beijing; Credit: Wang Zhao/AFP/Getty Images)
