Finding a cause worth dying for is no great trick—the Universe is full of them. Finding one worth living for is the genuine problem! Orphans of the Void by Michael Shaara. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. How many vintage science fiction authors won a Pulitzer Prize? Ray Bradbury never won a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, but received a Pulitzer Special Citation in 2007 for his impact on literature. The answer is three. Booth Tarkington, MacKinlay Kantor and Michael Shaara. Booth Tarkington is one of only four novelists to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once, along with William Faulkner, John Updike, and Colson Whitehead. Tarkington wrote only three short sci-fi stories. MacKinlay Kantor wrote eight short sci-fi stories and one science fiction novel If the South Had Won the Civil War released in 1961.Michael Shaara is the most well known of the three. Shaara was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1928. Before he began selling sci-fi for 2 cents a word in the 1950s he was a boxer and a police officer. He won his Pulitzer for his novel about the Battle of Gettysburg, The Killer Angels which won the award in 1975, and was showcased on the big screen in the 1993 movie Gettysburg starring Tom Berenger and Martin Sheen.Shaara also wrote the 1991 novel For Love of the Game which was made into the 1999 film with the same name starring Kevin Costner and Kelly Preston. But it all began back in 1952. He wrote two dozen short sci-fi stories and this was his first. From Galaxy Science Fiction in June 1952, we will discover this tale of artificial intelligence, and the fate of a forgotten world on page 78, Orphans of the Void by Michael Shaara...Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Renwick, with too much time on his hands, was bored. A darkly comic satire about an increasingly deranged leader of a Western power, tensions with Russia and the threat of World War 3 breaking out – sound familiar? That's the premise of Whoops Apocalypse, the 1986 feature film very loosely based on the sitcom of the same name, created by David Renwick and Andrew Marshall. Sadly where the film fails to imitate real life is the presence of a female President in the White House and she's the (relatively) sane one, while her British counterpart (played by Peter Cook) believes unemployment is caused by pixies and is quite happy to encourage those without jobs to leap to their deaths off Beachy Head. The film also features Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H), Richard Wilson, Michael Richards (pre-Seinfeld), Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, Herbert Lom and John Sessions. Last December for Goon Pod Film Club Tyler spoke to Renwick & Marshall at length about Whoops Apocalypse and how it all came about and he decided to share it with the general Goon Pod listeners as a bonus episode before world events rendered its plot totally tame and entirely plausible. Andrew and David talked warmly about the film and revealed how it was chiefly the lousy scheduling of their earlier television show End Of Part One which compelled them to write the Whoops Apocalypse sitcom, which in turn led to producer Brian Eastman proposing a big-screen repurposing, involving a new storyline and characters. They discussed the writing process, the challenges of casting, the difference between what made critics laugh and audiences laugh and things they wish had worked a little bit better. Goon Pod returns in late March. Goon Pod Film Club can be found here: patreon.com/GoonPod and you can sign up free for a seven day trial. Shows include Kind Hearts & Coronets, A Hard Days Night, Bedazzled (1967), Monty Python & The Holy Grail, Guest House Paradiso (aka the ‘Bottom movie'),Carry On Screaming, Billy Liar and, most recently, It's Trad Dad.

The conversation dives into the significance of hospitality in architecture and the importance of saying 'yes' to various opportunities. Eranalso explores his innovative concepts like the 'Flying Dormer' and shares insights into his books.. They discuss the importance of understanding zoning laws, balancing creativity with regulations, and envisioning a more sustainable, connected future for urban living.Takeaways: Hospitality has evolved from offering a uniform "home away from home" experience to providing authentic, culturally rich interactions that reflect local customs and traditions. Embracing this cultural authenticity in designs creates unique experiences for visitors.Embrace the journey of unknowns in your professional pursuits, as it can lead to amazing and impactful work. Stay true to your core beliefs and principles despite challenges and assignments, as they refine and strengthen your practice. When running a firm and taking on new clients, it's crucial to ensure mutual respect and collaboration, seeing clients as partners in the creative process. Decline projects where clients do not value this process of discovery, even if they offer the biggest commissions. The key to defining yourself in a noisy world is to genuinely understand what drives you, and then find effective ways to convey that authenticity. Embrace the gaps in your creative journey, as these transitional spaces are where true innovation occurs.Intergenerational collaboration fosters personal growth and enriches project outcomes. By acting as both leader and collaborator, one can guide and provide valuable feedback, mirroring the relationship between a good professor and their students.Don't be discouraged by regulations. Instead, understanding the rules allows you to creatively break them. Mastering the tools at hand is essential for architects, regardless of location.Quote of the Show:“As we go along we don't know where we're going and we love that.” - Eran ChenLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eran-chen-465b446/ Website: https://oda-architecture.com/ Book Link: https://a.co/d/9W28Zsk Book Link: https://a.co/d/9MIzAL4 Shout Outs:6:00 - Perkins Eastman: https://perkinseastman.com/ 29:14 - NYU: https://www.nyu.edu/ 29:16 - Columbia: https://www.columbia.edu/29:49 - Harvard Graduate School of Architecture: https://www.gsd.harvard.edu/architecture/ 44:47 - 15 Renwick: https://oda-architecture.com/projects/15-renwick 56:11 - Bard College: https://www.bard.edu/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

I can tell you mating cows for me has never been easier since I came up with where I wanted, to this endpoint that I wanted to be at, and knew the cows that I wanted on both sides of the pedigree.
