San Diego Food System Alliance

Urban agriculture is the practice of growing, harvesting and distributing food in an urban setting. Gardens in our cities do more than just beautify, they engage community members, increase access to healthy and fresh food, and reduce our carbon footprint. In this episode, the San Diego Food System Alliance is joined by Kristin Kvernland, Chair of SDSFA Urban Agriculture Working Group and urban farmer, Stepheni Norton of Dickenson Farm.

With 1 in 7 people in San Diego County lacking the food they need to be active and healthy, it is likely we all know someone suffering from hunger. September is Hunger Awareness Month and in this episode, the San Diego Food System Alliance, with experts from the San Diego Hunger Coalition and Community Resource Center, is taking a closer look at food insecurity in our community. Across the United States, 40% of food is wasted. The San Diego Food System Alliance and its partners are implementing the national “Save the Food” public service campaign in San Diego County to educate the public about food waste and offer resources for reduction. In the first episode of San Diego Food System Alliance’s Good Food Podcast, we’ll be exploring the issue of food waste with SDFSA Director of Strategic Initiatives, Barbara Hamilton, and Chef Kat Humphus of Specialty Produce, and offering tips and tricks to save your food!
