Mike was adopted at age of 4 and grew up in Illinois and Missouri. After high school, he spent 3 years in the Marine Corps where he was greatly helped in his spiritual life by the Navigators. He spent 2 years in San Diego involved with the Navigators military ministry. He is a graduate of Missouri University (Columbia) and Dallas Theological Seminary. He taught for 5 years at Detroit Bible College as well as serving as their business manager. Most of his career was spent in hospital administration with Quorum Health Resources (previously HCA Management Company). He has been retired for 15 years. He and his wife, Dawn, have been married for 53 years and have 3 sons and 6 grandchildren. Perusing the cookbook sections at thrift stores can be a real treat. While digging through well worn copies of Dump Cakes and other Cathy Mitchell classics, we absolutely screamed when we discovered a pristine third edition copy of The Ghirardelli Cookbook (1986). We've worked with Ghirardelli for a number of years, and on the Coffee Sprudgecast here in 2026 we are teaming up to dive deep into the rich and chocolatey world of all things mocha with a segment we're calling Mocha Moments. This forty-year-old cookbook, released in the height of the 1980s San Francisco specialty chocolate boom, is chock full of inspirations for this episode's mocha. We decided to adapt the "California Cappuccino"—a playful mix of chocolate, brandy, and foam—to create something we're calling the California Sober Mocha Cappuccino. By omitting the brandy and subbing out instant coffee with freshly pulled shots of La Barba espresso on our Sprudge HQ Linea Mini, we keep it NA while still leaning in on the psychotropic and mind-altering caffeine buzz, in true California Sober fashion. Before you begin writing your stern letter scolding us for the misnomer, we recognize mocha cappuccino is confusing, redundant, and perhaps, yes, an abuse of the english language. But we're coffee purists, purely having fun with coffee, and to be quite honest, mochas that are one third coffee and chocolate, one third steamed milk, and one third microfoam (the traditional cappuccino rule of 1/3s) is absolutely stunning. Who needs whip when you've got sweet, sweet gently warmed and textured Pacific Barista Series pistachio milk (btw, pistachios sourced from California last time we checked!) Before sliding into our DMs, perhaps give this recipe a shot: The California Sober Mocha Cappuccino Adapted from The Ghirardelli Cookbook by Phyllis Larsen (Third Edition, 1986) 1 heaping tablespoon Ghirardelli Sweet Ground Chocolate & Cocoa Powder 2oz La Barba Espresso 4oz frothy Pacific Barista Series Pistachio Milk Warm a diner mug with hot water to keep things nice and toasty. Place a heaping tablespoon (Phyllis Larsen insists on heaping and who are we to say no?) of Ghirardelli Sweet Ground Chocolate & Cocoa powder in the mug. Pull a double shot of espresso directly into your mug and mix until the chocolate powder and espresso have combined. Steam milk, cappuccino levels of froth, so that it almost doubles in volume. No soap sud bubbles, please—we're looking for micro-foam here, people. Add a bloop of that textured milk in the mug, stir it up, and add the rest. Bonus points if you can make a pattern in the shape of the state of California. Enjoy! Watch the Devotion Based on Romans 5:1-8 Ceasefire! Ceasefire! It is an order that demands: You stop pulling that trigger! Stop dropping mortar rounds! But the adrenaline still courses through your body. You smell the burnt propellant from your firearm. You taste the salt from your sweat. Your heart beats in your eardrums. Your eyes are still trained downrange as you drop an empty and clip in a fresh 5.56 mag, waiting, listening for the next “Pop! Pop! Pop!” so you can reengage in the fight. Ceasefire! An order that should demand peace. You no longer need to use your weapon. You no longer need to be on high alert. There is no reason to fight anymore. This is the order we need to hear from Jesus every day because when it comes to our spiritual life, it is a difficult thing to just stop and let our hearts be at peace. I know this is a hard thing to do because the enemy continues to attack our position with lie after lie. Maybe for you it's the lie God's love must be earned by the way you've lived your life. Or maybe it's that God is mean and vindictive and your suffering is God's way of punishing you for past sins. Or maybe it's that your worth is determined by how you perform before God as a warrior, as a single person, as a husband or wife or son or daughter. The enemy fire continues to bark, egging you on to keep fighting, keep grinding, maybe you'll get there someday. But Jesus calmly approaches our position with a gentle yet firm command, “Ceasefire.” Listen to his “Ceasefire” through the Apostle Paul: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). You have peace with God because he has justified you. This picture of justification lands us in a courtroom. As military service member the thought of standing in court may mean that you have to defend your actions. But in God's courtroom you don't need to defend yourself. You don't even need to testify. “God has justified you,” Paul writes. This means that the judge's declaration to you is that you are not guilty. You are innocent. Christ Jesus has taken your guilt upon himself for upon the cross he hung guilty for you. So, listen to the command from Jesus when he says to you today, “Ceasefire.” There is no need to keep fighting, to keep grinding, to keep believing the lie that God is punishing you. Just rest in his peace. Whether you feel it or not, it is true: you are at peace with God for he is at peace with you because of Christ Jesus. God has declared it, “Ceasefire.” Just stop. Stand down. Listen to what God has declared to you. You are justified in Christ Jesus. Prayer: Lord Jesus, because you are my judge, my defense attorney and the one who took my place and paid the penalty for my offenses, you remind me that I stand before you justified right now and tomorrow and the rest of the days of my life. Help me to return to the courtroom and hear your declaration of innocence so that I may rest in the peace only you can give. Continue to bring this message of peace to the hearts of our military service members who are engaged in combat. Reassure them that they stand before you justified. Double-check your credit-card benefits Cards in your wallet may cover trip delay, baggage loss, or secondary car rental insurance. The Points Guy keeps a running tally of cards whose built-in coverage is worth something—and where the gaps are (e.g., no medical evacuation). How to use these resources efficiently Quote your exact dates (don't round your trip to a calendar month; excess days add cost). Filter for medical & evac first; those are the two benefits that can bankrupt you. Ignore marketing buzzwords like "explorer" or "adventure" until you've opened the PDF certificate and searched for the activity you actually plan to do. Run your final-four shortlist past recent claim reviews (Squaremouth, Trustpilot, Reddit r/solotravel) to see if the carrier ghosted people during COVID or the Israel–Gaza cancellations. Purchase directly from the insurer once you've chosen—that avoids aggregator change-fees if you need to modify dates. Stay curious, question every "Top 10" list's methodology, and you'll land the coverage that fits your risk profile—nothing more, nothing less.     60 second confidence challenge   3 things: neighborhood selection, daylight itineraries, scam avoidance Select walkable neighborhoods with public transportation nearby if you don't drive. These are very typical scams. If you are suspicious, you may be right to avoid that vendor and choose another. It's a series.   Destination Deep‑Dive Today's destination is:       South Korea   I visited South Korea last year and am going back this month.  I landed at Seoul's Inchon Airport. My Korean pronunciation is not good, so please bear with me as I describe my trip. I was excited to see the city through my friend Chris's eyes. We were whisked away to a hotpot dinner, then taken to the French neighborhood in Seoul, where we rested overnight. The next morning, we drove south to visit a town about 2 hours away and stayed in Wolbong-ro (Road), in Seobuk-gu, near SeongJeong.   South Korea is about the same size as the US state of Virginia, or compared to the size of the country of Hungary. If you look at the size of the entire peninsula, you would say it's the same size as Minnesota or the country of Great Britain.   I was only there for four days, but during this time, I was able to see a lot of Seoul and explore some places to share with you.   For example, the Seoul Noryangin Fisheries Wholesale Market is five stories tall and open to the public. It's worth seeing if you like seafood, and you can roam the aisles looking for your favorite fish delicacies.   I visited the Vovo Bidet company and met with the director and some of his team. Have you seen the #1 Bidet firm in Korea? They have retail and wholesale offices in the Los Angeles area as well. I liked the tour of the offices here in Seoul. They even have a Bidet to go. Think about that for a minute. That was in Daebang-dong or Seocho4-dong.   I visited retail stores such as Zara, one of my favorite fashion stores. I had Chinese, Japanese, and Fusion foods. I took subways, buses, taxis, and Ubers, plus trains. I went to Gwannghumun Square, the purple Station #9.   I went to the shopping mall called The Hyundai, and found stores like Zanmang Loopy, the Hyundai Present, and a great coffee and tea shop.   I learned about Hanguel, the Korean alphabet, and saw the statue of Sejong the Great. There was also another statue of Admiral YiSun Sin. The Bukchon Honok Village is a quiet residential area. Jogyasa Temple is where you will see Buddhism. Hongdae is the neighborhood for independent artists.   Yonsei University was a place I wanted to visit next time, as I was in the neighborhood and liked it a lot. Gangnam style, well, maybe next time. I tried new foods, such as mung bean pancakes and hotteok dessert. We had a wonderful dinner at Sushi-ya Shabu-ya, about an hour from Seoul, near Korea Nazarene University in Cheonan-si-Buldang1-dong.   Recommended: Relax in a tea house.     Smart Move and Slip-up pairings We arrived in     In Korea, we were unable to enter the building because we had insufficient funds on our transit cards. Instead, we had to see the office at the kiosk and pay for the train. It was not much, but it did take a few minutes. We arrived well ahead of the recommended 3 hours, so that was not an issue.     60-second confidence challenge   Do you or don't you tip? Not in South Korea. But it's always smart to ask.
