Most self-help advice makes me cringe. Vision boards, “manifesting,” and the whole daily affirmation thing? Yeah, I've always put that in the woo-woo category. But lately, I've been stuck in my head, wrestling with self-doubt, perfectionism, and the classic case of overthinking everything. So I decided to try something that made me deeply uncomfortable: staring at myself in the mirror and saying things like “I am enough.” And no, I didn't spontaneously combust from secondhand embarrassment. In this episode, I test daily affirmations for a week, even the corny ones, and rope my wife into writing a few that are, well, questionable at best. For more go to: www.scottmlynch.comLevel up your life by joining my Patreon where you'll get exclusive content every week and more badass offerings (rips t-shirt in half, Hulk Hogan style, and runs around the room). this week's episode is a very special one — i'm (leo) joined by my high school bestie Alexa for a nostalgic and pretty vulnerable conversation about who we used to be, who we've become & what we'd tell our younger selves. from crying over boys to learning how to stop craving male validation, from incessantly comparing ourselves to finding self-worth in our twenties — this one's for the girls who like us are still healing (from) their teenage selves. so grab a drink, get cosy & join us for a little trip down memory lane.
My guest is Tom Segura, renowned comedian, writer, actor and director. We discuss the “how-to” of comedy writing and storytelling, and what the science of humor and the creative process reveal about human emotion and memory. We explore why surprise and the act of "saying the unspoken truth" activate the brain's reward circuits, as well as the subconscious mechanisms that shape our sense of what is funny. The episode also examines the bi-directional influence between comedy and cultural standards. It will interest anyone curious about the science of humor, the art of performance and emotional contagion. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. Self-doubt and insecurities often mask themselves as doubt in God, affecting how we view our relationship with Him. Through biblical examples like Gideon, we learn that God sees us differently than we see ourselves - as mighty heroes and masterpieces created for specific purposes. Our past failures, like those of Moses, David, and Paul, don't disqualify us from God's calling. True confidence comes not from believing in ourselves, but from having faith in God's purpose and His promise to be with us as we fulfill our calling.

There's also strong commentary on digital accessibility, the blurred lines of language policing, and the impact of AI smart glasses from Meta and Google. Plus, listeners chime in on VoiceOver vs TalkBack, the future of Braille, disability benefits, and even a shocking tale about prosthetic eyes during a PIP assessment. It's an unfiltered, energizing episode that reminds us why your voices matter.
Liina Turtonen, aka LNA, is a musician, producer, and educator, who runs the LNA Does Audio Stuff YouTube Channel. Liina is an Ableton Certified Trainer and just released her book Creative Confidence and Music Production: Overcome Your Insecurities. LNA and I discussed her new book and the inspiration behind writing it. She shared insights that have helped her and her students get past creative blocks and insecurities. Listen on Apple, Spotify, YouTube Takeaways: LNA's journey to authorship was unexpected due to her dyslexia. Creative confidence is essential for artists to overcome insecurities. Art is often undervalued despite its significant role in society. Vulnerability is necessary for authentic creative expression. Insecurities often stem from past experiences and external judgments. Recognizing negative thought patterns is the first step to overcoming them. Acceptance of emotions is crucial in the creative process. It's important to create without the fear of judgment from others. Life is short; take risks and pursue your passions. Embrace the mindset of 'why not?' to unlock creativity. Consistency in your efforts is more important than perfection. Being comfortable in your mediocrity can be liberating. Curiosity keeps life interesting and fulfilling. You never know who you might inspire by pursuing your passions. The journey of creativity is often more valuable than the end result. In episode 132 of Awareness That Heals, Robert begins the first of six progressive guided meditations to help us with feelings of insecurity, a common feeling inside of us that we often see as something really undesirable. Robert begins by helping us understand that insecurity really means that we care deeply about something. Insecurities can arise from how we feel about our intimate partnerships, work performance or physical appearance. Take a journey through these six guided meditations and acquire the tools necessary to feel better about yourself when the challenging emotion of insecurity arises in your life.
God Made You On PurposePsalm 139:13 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.”God created everything about us. I like this verse, though, because it reminds us that He created even our inmost being. I like the visual of God knitting me together. One stitch at a time. I am not someone who knits, but I have family and friends that do. When you are knitting something you can make it look however you want to. If you are the person doing it, you get to pick the colors; you get to pick the pattern, and you even get to pick which stitch or combination of stitches you are going to use. You are the creator of whatever you are knitting. Now, imagine that God is knitting you together. He chose all the specifics about you. He got to choose what color hair you have and what color eyes you have. Do you ever take time to think about this, to think about the fact that God created everything about you? I was at a personal development conference this week, so that may be why it is on my mind more than usual. I love attending these conferences because it is so great to be gathered in a room with like-minded people. I don't mean that we all think the same way or even believe the same things, but in this instance, we were all there because we knew God had a bigger plan for our lives, and we wanted to figure out what that plan was. It was an amazing weekend, and I learned so much. This happened to be a women's conference, and there were so many women gathered together, all wanting to improve themselves in some way or another. This is a beautiful thing. One of the things that usually comes up when you have so many women gathered together is the idea of insecurities. Insecurities are something that I believe everyone has. We don't all have them about the same things or to the same extent, but I do think we are all insecure about something. We all have that one thing, or some of us have more than one thing that we wish we could change about ourselves. That thing that we really don't like about ourselves. Some of these things affect our lives in a big way, and some do not. When you look at yourself and your life, what are your insecurities? What are the things about you that you don't like that may be getting in your way of living your best life? Maybe you are struggling because you are living the life that everyone around you wants you to live, but inside, you feel like it's not right for you. For instance, you have a really good job, and you are making good money, but in your heart, you really want to be doing something else. Maybe you have insecurities based on your appearance. This is a big one with women. We feel too tall, too short, too thin, too fat. Or we feel our hair is too long, too short, too light, too dark. It seems like no one is happy in their own skin these days. I wonder why this is. I wonder if people throughout the ages have always felt like this, or if this is new. I don't think it is new that people don't like something about themselves. I am sure that has always probably been a thing. However, I wonder if it was as widespread and commonplace as it is today. I am not sure if I know a single woman who is so happy with her appearance that she wouldn't change anything if you asked. I wonder if all this unhappiness has to do with social media and marketing. Once upon a time, before TV, magazines, movies, etc., you didn't have so much access to everything. You could compare yourself to those who lived around you, and maybe those in paintings or in books. However, you didn't have the kind of access you have today. Today, you could spend five minutes online and you could scroll through hundreds of images of whatever you want to look at. Also, if you have social media, you can just scroll down your feed, and you will see plenty of posts from people. The internet can be a very dangerous place for those who have insecurities and are looking for proof that those insecurities are real. If you think you are too heavy and then you search for proof of that online, you will find it. That is how the internet works. You ask a question and it searches all the data and gives you an answer to the question that you just asked it. Your brain is the same. If you have an insecurity and you ask your brain to find proof of it, your brain will. The awesome thing about your brain is that the opposite is also true. If you ask your brain to prove to you that your insecurity is not true, it will do that as well. For instance, if you ask your brain why no one at work likes you, it will search all your memories and come up with reasons why your co-workers don't like you. However, if you ask your brain to prove to you that people at your work do like you, your brain will come up with an answer to that question as well. If you do not like the answers you are coming up with then you need only ask better questions. The main speaker at the conference said something this weekend, and I think it would be great if everyone in the world heard it. She said that when she was sitting in the audience at her first personal development conference, she had a realization wash over her. She felt it was divine intervention. The realization was, “What if I was on purpose? What if God made me exactly like I am for a reason?” I think this is so important because I think so many of us feel like there is some part of us that is wrong. We feel like we would be better if that part of us didn't exist. I always wished that I wasn't so emotional. I have thought this more times than I can count. I cry at happy things, I cry at sad things, I cry at spiritual things, I cry for someone else's happy times and someone else's pain. I am just a mess sometimes. I always thought this was a character flaw. However, now I know that God gave me that ability. I don't know why He made me that way, but God doesn't make mistakes. So, there must be a reason. The same goes for you. You were made on purpose. God knew what he was doing. He designed each part of you for a reason. He pays attention to detail. How would your life be different if you could hear this and really take it in? How would you feel about yourself if the next time you started to feel insecure about something, you reminded yourself that God made you this way on purpose? You are perfect, just as you are. You are loved just as you are. Your are enough just as you are.Dear Heavenly Father I ask that you bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord help us to see ourselves through your eyes. Help us to see everyone through your eyes. Lord help remind us when we feel insecure that you made us on purpose. Remind us Lord that you created our inmost being. You knit us together perfectly and completely. And if you made us on purpose Lord then that means we can't be a mistake. That means our hopes and desires aren't a mistake. That means our character isn't a mistake. We love you Lord Jesus and we thank you for making us who we are and we ask that you help us learn to love who we are. We thank you for making us in your likeness and image. As creators, many of us start with a hunch, a curiosity, or a simple “let's see where this goes.” Today's guest, Dexter Zhuang, embodies this experimental mindset. He's the founder of Portfolio Path and a fractional product leader who's spent the last 12 years leading teams across the U.S., Southeast Asia, and Latin America at companies like Dropbox and Xendit. In 2023, Dexter launched Money Abroad—a newsletter exploring personal finance for expats—as an experiment. Over time, it evolved into Portfolio Path, an education platform that helps high-performers grow their portfolio careers and manage their money with intention. Today, Portfolio Path reaches over 7,000 subscribers. Along the way, Dexter has leaned into audience surveys, embraced feedback, and navigated the common insecurities that come with publishing your ideas publicly. In this episode, we unpack that journey—from testing an idea to building something that resonates deeply with a growing community. In this episode, we cover: (00:00) Introduction (02:02) Starting a newsletter as an experiment (06:11) Pivoting the newsletter (11:10) Reviewing Dexter's past content (16:26) Insecurities when building the newsletter (20:49) Content is a stepping stone for the audience (23:24) Conducting surveys with your audience (30:52) Underrated parts of building a newsletter (37:26) Actionable Takeaways Connect with Dexter Zhuang Newsletter: https://www.theportfoliopath.com/subscribe Website: https://www.dexterzhuang.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dexterzhuang Connect with Cheryl Lau Website: https://cheryllau.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@cheryltheory Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cheryltheory LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cheryllau ANNOTATIONS - The Newsletter The edits that got cut from the podcast. Ever feel like God could never use someone like you?In this message, we're getting real about insecurity—the kind that whispers, “God will never use you.” Whether it's the voice in your head or the wallpaper project that went sideways (you'll hear that story too), we've all had moments where we doubt ourselves more than we doubt God.But what if your weakness is actually the very thing that qualifies you? What if God specializes in using the unlikely, the insecure, and even the full-on failures? (Spoiler: He does.)This message is for the ones who've blown it, the ones who feel overlooked, and the ones who wonder if God made a mistake choosing them. Good news: You are not a mistake. You're a masterpiece.Let's talk about what it means to face your insecurities—and still say yes to God's calling.
