There’s been a candy store at this location in downtown Seaside since way back in 1897, and it’s been in the Phillips family since the early 1930s. Phillips Candies heralds back to the golden age of confectionery delights and has become a haven for nostalgia seeking enthusiasts. From humble historical beginnings to sugar rationing during the war years, join us as owner Steve Phillips takes us back in time to the beginning of a delicious Seaside tradition.

Seaside’s beautifully restored Gilbert District is peppered with historic architecture from days of old - including two of the city's oldest buildings framing the intersection at Broadway and Holladay Drive. Stroll with us down Broadway and hear the classic Gilbert District tales from the distant past.

Take a walk with us through the Seaside Museum and experience the history of Oregon’s first and foremost seaside resort. Going back nearly 2,000 years, the Seaside Museum features a multitude of dramatic stories and artifacts, including local Native American history and the Lewis & Clark experience. The Butterfield Cottage, located on the same property as the Seaside Museum, is fully furnished with historically accurate artifacts and dates back to 1912. The Butterfield Cottage is Oregon’s one and only historical beach cottage museum.

On the beach since 1937, the Seaside Aquarium is the oldest privately owned aquarium on the West Coast. The building was constructed in 1924 where it originally served as a salt water bath house and swimming pool (commonly known as a “natatorium”). The natatorium closed in the early 1930s, and after a series of renovations opened as the Seaside Aquarium we know today.

The Corps of Discovery found the perfect spot to make salt 15 miles southwest of Fort Clatsop in what is now modern day Seaside. Believe it or not, finding good salt was not only a culinary morale booster, but could even be a matter of life or death for the Corps. Come with us as local historian, Gloria Linkey, provides an up close and personal view of the importance of the salt making process from Lewis & Clark’s point of view.
