In this episode of the VRMA Arrival podcast, Lance and Elaine Stitcher of Seaside Vacation & Sales share the story behind their 2025 VRMA Excellence Awards win for Best Marketing Campaign, and why the campaign was never really about Seaside at all.Celebrating both their company's 10th anniversary and the 100th annual Chincoteague Pony Swim, the Seaside team challenged themselves to do something bold: create an original, feature-length documentary that honored the island's history, culture, and people. Led by a small but highly creative in-house marketing team, the project became the centerpiece of a year-long storytelling campaign that extended far beyond the film itself, generating millions of social impressions, significant follower growth, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in directly attributable bookings.Lance and Elaine unpack how the campaign came together, how they measured success, and why community-first storytelling consistently outperforms traditional “listing-first” marketing. They also share practical takeaways for property managers of any size—whether or not they have a milestone event or a big budget—including how to repurpose content, spotlight local characters, and let destination storytelling do the heavy lifting.
Seaside grieves after the fatal police shooting of 31-year-old Ronald Chyron Tinsley II, access to healthcare is a top priority for Monterey County residents, CalFresh benefits at farmers markets could change, and more in this week's local news roundup.

United's "Road to Wembley" via the FA Cup has ended for yet another season, as they were beaten 4-1 at Blackpool at the weekend - despite the scoreline, the Blues gave a decent account of themselves against a League One side once again this season. While the route to the national stadium via the FA Cup has closed, the FA Trophy journey begins this weekend - with a first ever visit to Harborough Town and a role reversal of United's cup ties across the rest of the season. Can we avoid a potential banana skin against the promotion-chasing Southern League Premier Division Central side. Before that though, in-form Woking are the opponents at Brunton Park in the National League - both sides are unbeaten in nine league games, will something give or should we expect a stalemate?Lots discussed in this episode, including:

About forty years ago, the New Urbanism came on the scene with bold and creative ideas for building entirely new towns. The founders of the movement intended to prove that we could really build beautiful, walkable new places in America, much like some of our historic norms. Those early communities captured incredible attention, far beyond their actual size. And they've influenced a couple generations of people in the planning and development world. But it's also true that most of the new places built were fairly modest in scale. Seaside, Florida, the famous community on the Florida panhandle, is just sixty acres in size. Many other new communities were the size of a suburban subdivision, or a smaller master-planned community. This isn't a knock on the projects, it's just the reality of what could be achieved and who the clients were.In recent years, an even bigger and more audacious proposal has come forward called California Forever. The founders have acquired over 50,000 acres in the Bay Area in Solano County. I speak with Gabriel Metcalf, the Head of Planning, to discuss the plans for this new community - the whys, whats and hows. This is a massive effort, and one that's intentionally trying to renew notions of what can be done in a state that's become famously difficult in which to build.Gabriel and I talk about not just the specifics of the proposed community, but how this effort fits into the historic context of new towns, and what he sees as precedents. Can we still build new places in America that are inspiring and solve 21st century problems? And what do new towns say about our existing cities and their struggles? We discuss all this and more.Find more content on The Messy City on Kevin's Substack page.Music notes: all songs by low standards, ca. 2010. Videos here. Today I am joined by Mallory Killingstad! Mallory grew up in Dallas, Texas, and every summer her family would rent a house in Seaside for a month—a place she has always considered her happy place. In fact, the artist for Pavilion was her best friend in middle school, who often joined her family on those summer trips—neither of them realizing they'd one day collaborate on a company inspired by 30A in their thirties. She attended SMU for undergrad, and living in Dallas helped shape her appreciation for fashion, which later translated into interiors and home. With an undergraduate degree in engineering, Mallory's career path has been anything but linear. She owned a clothing boutique for several years, lived in Aspen while working in community marketing for Outdoor Voices during its startup days, and eventually returned to Dallas. After losing her father at 31, Mallory made the bold decision to pursue her MBA at 32, an intimidating step at the time, and she proudly graduated at 34. In the years that followed, she got married, broke her leg, started a family, and is now a mom to two little girls. Through it all, Mallory has held tightly to hope, choosing to believe she would always land on her feet—a perspective she admits she didn't fully embrace in her twenties. In this episode Mallory and I talked about her twenties, the first business she started, why she decided to leave that business behind, going back to school, how she started Pavilion, why having a cofounder is so important, and more! It's always a pleasure to welcome a bush trainer to the podcast. Our guest this week is Stephen Lee who chips away diligently from his Ballina base season after season with consistent results. He's currently ably assisted by son Jordan with whom he'll soon form an official partnership. Lee has posted 850 winners since his solo career began in 1986, and has two NRRA training premierships on his CV. Stephen rotates his horses between a dual barn complex on Ballina racecourse, and a nearby 60 acre property which gives him access to a pristine stretch of beach. Whenever one of the team warrants an opportunity in a metropolitan environment, he heads to Eagle Farm or Doomben just two hours away. He rarely tackles the arduous road trip to Sydney although he did venture to Randwick on November 1st with smart sprinter The Astronomer. This podcast was recorded twenty four hours before The Astronomer raced. Stephen talks of the easy access to Brisbane tracks as opposed to the marathon trip to Sydney. He acknowledges son Jordan's entry into the NSW training ranks and says he's looking forward to their proposed partnership. Stephen talks about the luxury of being able to give horses a complete change of environment at his beachside property. He says the new routine works wonders with highly strung horses. He talks about the large paddock set aside for retired racehorses or horses who've fallen on hard times. His partner Amanda would have even more if space allowed. The trainer talks about his two NRRA premierships. In winning the first one he unseated long time incumbent John Shelton. Stephen looks back on his early education under the tutelage of his late father Bruce. He says Bruce was a capable racehorse trainer but was best known as an all rounder constantly called upon to sort out other people's troublesome horses. He talks of his father's early association with iconic trainer Maurice McCarten. The Ballina horseman pays tribute to his elderly Mum. Stephen says his early aspirations to become a jockey were quickly negated by increasing weight. He talks of a brief flirtation with the harness racing sport. Stephen has vivid recollections of his first training win on the defunct White ParK track at Scone. He talks of a brief training stint at Coffs Harbour and a subsequent move to Ballina, a move he hasn't regretted. Stephen pays tribute to daughter Maddison who was his valued trackwork rider for a number of years. Maddison put a lot of time into Anton En Avant, a prolific winner for the Lee stable. As a yearling Anton En Avant appeared unlikely to ever make it to the races. He talks about the gelding's amazing race record which included a win in the Gr 3 Chairman's Hcp at Doomben. Stephen talks of former jockey Cassandra Schmidt who won a string of races on Anton En Avant. The trainer pays tribute to several handy horses who've flown the flag for the Ballina stable over the years - Zoukina, Lasting Kiss, Minassi, Felix Trinidad, Song Time, Bavosa, and Espiritu. Stephen tells us more about his current apprentice Siabh Wrigley who still has a number of trial rides to complete before gaining her licence to ride in races. The signs are promising. It's a laid back chat with a top country horseman.

Join Sandra for a deep and inspiring conversation with Athena Monet, a spiritual teacher, intuitive guide, and the founder of the Seaside Shaman™. Her journey began in a corporate career in architecture, but a lifetime of unexplained illnesses and sensitivities eventually led her to a profound realization: she is a powerful empath. This understanding became the key to her own healing and set her on a soul-led path to help others. The true catalyst for her awakening was the sudden loss of her mother on Christmas Day, an event that plunged her into deep grief and a mysterious, chronic illness that doctors could not diagnose. At her breaking point, she was guided to a local shaman, where a miraculous healing experience reawakened her dormant, ancestral gifts of clairvoyance and clairsentience. Athena shares how writing a letter to her mother in Spirit was the final step that led to her instantaneous and complete physical healing. Discover the world of a modern-day shaman and how they act as an intermediary, journeying between worlds to bring back wisdom and healing for others. Athena explains how our prayers are like a "911 dispatch" to the spirit world, and how our team of angels, guides, and loved ones respond. She provides practical tools for anyone grieving, including how to ask for and recognize signs from loved ones, and explains that our suffering often serves the sacred purpose of moving us toward our true path. Athena is a mother, writer, teacher and practicing shaman in the quaint beach town of Lewes, Delaware, who enjoys playing, dancing, laughing and living in nature. Athena infuses lightness into her mission of supporting clients through some of life's heaviest and darkest transitions by bringing them closer to complete alignment and a true embodiment of their higher Self. She works through her writing, private client work, group sessions, workshops and teacher training. As a medium and intermediary, Athena works to connect us with many of our helpers from the Spirit realms, angels, guides, masters, and our own Higher Self. Find out more about Athena Monet, her trainings, and her book, Leave with Love, on her website: https://www.seasideshaman.com/ Thanks for listening! ***Connect with Sandra Champlain: * Website (Free book by joining the 'Insiders Club, Free empowering Sunday Gatherings with medium demonstration, Mediumship Classes & more): http://wedontdie.com *Patreon (Early access, PDF of over 750 episodes & more): Visit https://www.patreon.com/wedontdieradio *Don't miss Sandra's #1 "Best of all things afterlife related" Podcast 'Shades of the Afterlife' at https://bit.ly/ShadesoftheAfterlife

On this episode of VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart & Soul podcast, host Lisa Marie Burwell, VIE's CEO/editor-in-chief, spoke with restaurateur, businessman, speaker, and author Kevin Boehm and a very special guest, Oliver Petit, owner of The Red Bar in Grayton Beach, Florida. In the first half of the interview, Kevin and Oliver share stories from the very beginning of their friendship, spanning multiple decades since Kevin came to Seaside in 1993. Kevin explains that his childhood was not a happy one, and for that reason, he wanted to curate and build his own chosen family, which Oliver fit right into. Kevin opened his first restaurant, Lazy Days Café, in the area. In 1995, Kevin opened Indigo Wine Bar, and Oliver opened The Red Bar. Oliver recalls his own journey in the hospitality industry, as well as the heart-wrenching story of The Red Bar burning down just a few years ago. He was able to rebuild it almost exactly as the original had been—with some improvements—and we were excited to film this episode on location there. In the second half of the interview, Lisa and Kevin dive into Kevin's new book, The Bottomless Cup. He takes readers and now listeners on a journey through his childhood, his relationship with his mother, his restaurant career, personal relationships, navigating COVID-19 as a business owner, and the loss of his mother in 2020. A common thread throughout his life seems to be the ability to maintain meaningful and long-standing relationships. Kevin and his business partner, Rob Katz, currently own and operate 26 restaurants in Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, and New York City through Boka Restaurant Group. The pair won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur in America in 2018. Kevin's autobiography is scheduled for release on November 4, 2025. On this episode of VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart & Soul podcast, host Lisa Marie Burwell, VIE's CEO/editor-in-chief, spoke with Grand Boulevard director of marketing, Stacey Brady. The energy in this episode is contagious, and we loved hearing the stories Stacey shared! Lisa and Stacey have been colleagues and friends for a span of close to 30 years. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Stacey worked for SEASIDE®️, Florida, for six years. She recalls it being an exciting time, with The Truman Show having just been released and drawing a lot of attention to Seaside, both nationally and internationally. A recurring theme within Stacey's career is a passion for doing more. She led the way and wrote the submission for Seaside for an Urban Land Institute (ULI) award. The town not only became a finalist, but actually won "Best in Show." Stacey then began working with Grand Boulevard Town Center in Miramar Beach in 2006. After a few hiccups along the way, like the commercial real estate fallout and the BP oil spill in 2009, the vision for the property became a reality with beautiful architecture, shops, restaurants, and exciting events. Stacey was also instrumental in creating the concert venue on the north lawn at Grand Boulevard that has since hosted Darius Rucker in 2012, the 30A Songwriters Festival Main Stage, and other great performances. This episode will have you smiling from start to finish! A slight earthquake shook San Benito County on Labor Day. And, a local nonprofit marks International Overdose Awareness Day in Seaside.
Summer may be winding down, but we're not ready to say goodbye just yet! This week, we go back to Cape Cod and the Islands for an encore of two of our favorite seaside segments. First, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the movie “Jaws" through analyzing its iconic score with two music professors, including a John Williams expert. Then, we meet a chemical oceanographer and MacArthur "Genius" based in Woods Hole who's studying some of the smallest organisms on the planet -- plankton. Tell us whatcha' think! Send a text to us, here! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our podcast. In 2015, the Adolescent Sexuality Conference in Seaside, Oregon was canceled due to public outcry over its content, including discussions on porn and drug use during sex. Recently, similar figures re-emerged at the Joining Our Youth (JOY) Conference held at Oregon State University. This event, focusing on school-based health clinics, aimed to empower youth to access a range of health services, including mental health and gender-affirming care. The JOY Conference, supported by the Oregon School-Based Health Alliance and the Hallie E. Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families, brought together over 200 attendees, including youth leaders, educators, and health practitioners. The conference provided interactive activities and workshops aimed at promoting health services through youth-adult partnerships and included discussions on culturally responsive clinical approaches and policy sustainability. However, the event has been met with criticism. One example involves Shantel Waddell, who discussed extending day programs for community schools. This follows a recent lawsuit where a program she was involved with was accused of mishandling a sexual assault case involving minors. Another presenter, Nicole Mayer, focused on enhancing youth/adult partnerships, emphasizing her diverse identity and commitment to various social issues, which some may see as a push towards activism rather than education.Furthermore, Haley Hedrick from the Doernbecher Gender Clinic discussed supporting gender diverse youth, emphasizing resilience amidst political and cultural challenges. She offered insights into both medical and non-medical pathways for gender affirmation, emphasizing youth-centered decision-making models.Critics of the JOY Conference argue that its strong focus on youth empowerment and engagement could veer into activism, potentially sidelining parental involvement in the developmental and educational processes of their children. The conference literature notably lacked any mention of parental roles, raising concerns about the exclusion of parents from discussions about their children's health and education. This event reflects ongoing tensions between educational initiatives aimed at inclusivity and community responses that demand more traditional approaches to education and parental involvement.Support the showIf you need assistance with a situation in your area, please fill out our free consultation form.DONATE TODAY!www.ParentsRightsInEducation.com

#170 - Ever wondered what it would be like to turn your healthcare career into an adventure? Aaron Bowe transforms this dream into reality as a traveling physical therapist who has crafted a nomadic lifestyle that combines professional growth with unforgettable experiences across America's most breathtaking landscapes.Aaron reveals the unexpected financial benefits of travel therapy that most healthcare professionals never discover. With 60-70% of his income coming from untaxed housing and meal stipends, he's accelerating student loan payoff while experiencing more of life than his permanently-placed colleagues. This arrangement doesn't just make financial sense—it opens doors to experiences most people only dream about. The conversation takes us across the country from the foggy coastline of Seaside, Oregon to the tropical shores of Maui, where Aaron learned to spearfish, and remote Alaska, where local fishermen shared their hard-earned knowledge. Each location transformed him in unexpected ways, challenging him to embrace new activities and perspectives. Together with his wife (an occupational therapist) and sister-in-law (a speech therapist), this "Travel Therapy Trio" has mastered the art of negotiating contracts, finding housing, and maximizing both adventure and income. What's particularly fascinating is Aaron's perspective on how this lifestyle shapes identity. "We have gotten into so many activities that we never would have done if we weren't traveling," he explains, describing how moving every few months eliminates the intimidation of trying new things. This continuous growth and openness to experience has fundamentally changed how he approaches life.Whether you're a healthcare professional curious about alternative career paths or simply someone who dreams of more adventure, Aaron's journey demonstrates that with careful planning, you can transform your career into something that nourishes both your bank account and your soul. Curious about combining purpose with adventure? This conversation might just be the permission slip you need to take the leap.To learn more about Aaron check out his website www.traveltherapytrio.com and give him a follow on Instagram @traveltherapytrio.Want to be a guest on Journey with Jake? TERROR ON THE BEACH! Seaside resorts from Cape May, New Jersey, to Montauk, Long Island, were paralyzed in fear during the summer of 1916.Not because of the threat of lurking German U-boats and saboteurs. But because of sharks. On July 1, 1916, Charles Epting Vansant was killed by a shark while swimming at a resort in Beach Haven, a popular destination on the Jersey Shore. At first, this terrible tragedy received only limited attention. After all, millions were flocking to the beaches along the Jersey Shore and throughout the New York region -- Coney Island, the Rockaways and Staten Island's South Beach.Shark attacks were the stuff of pirate legends and dramatic works of art. Most experts were skeptical that sharks were dangerous at all; the Maryland mogul Hermann Oelrichs offered $500 to any person with proof that sharks were dangerous to humans. Nobody claimed the reward. But during that July, sharks did threaten the lives of humans -- not only on sandy beaches, but even in tranquil watering holes, several miles inland. What was in the water in July of 1916?This show contains descriptions of violence related to shark attacks. You've been warned. This episode was edited and produced by Kieran Gannon.Visit the website for more episodes of the Bowery Boys Podcast.
