In this episode, we dig into Hosea 13:14 and its surprising afterlife in 1 Corinthians 15:54–57, where Paul turns an ancient oracle into a triumphant proclamation of resurrection hope.Hosea 13:14 has a significant amount of ambiguity in its wording. In the Hebrew text, key verbs related to ransom and redemption—and even the tone of the passage itself—can be read either as a promise of deliverance from death, God's intentions towards Israel but their refusal to receive, or as a trash-talking taunt announcing death's inevitability. The Masoretic Text and the Septuagint (LXX) preserve these tensions in different ways, leaving open the question: is God declaring victory over Death, declaring his intentions that Israel refuses, or summoning death and the grave as an agent of judgment?Paul knows this ambiguity—and he leverages it.By drawing on the Greek rendering of Hosea, Paul applies this oracle as a defiant challenge: “Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?” In doing so, he stands firmly within Hosea's poetic world, where Death and the Grave are not abstract ideas but hostile powers—personal, invasive, and destructive.Yet Paul sharpens the image even further. For him, Death is not merely tragic; it is an enemy. Not simply because it ends biological life, but because it violently interrupts the human vocation. Death cuts our developmental journey short. It fractures the unity of body and person. It traps humanity in a condition God never intended—existence separated from embodied life.This is why resurrection matters.Jesus' resurrection is not just a reversal of death; it is the beginning of Death's defeat. In Christ, healing from our sins is inseparable from healing from corruption, decay, and disintegration. Today’s episode is a classic from the archives, a conversation from 2019 with Brandon Shimoda about his book The Grave on the Wall. While the book centers on an exploration of Shimoda's grandfather's internment at Fort Missoula during World War II, it is really an interrogation of America that extends both directions in time from that moment. Forts such as these, that imprisoned Japanese and Japanese-Americans during the war, were also previously used to fight the Indian wars that established white dominance over Native lands, and are now today being used as detention centers/concentration camps for the refugees and immigrants from our southern border. The Grave on the Wall is also an engagement with photography and (mis)representation, memory and memorialization and asks the question of what it means to memorialize something that is ongoing, that has never ended. March 1, 2026Today's Reading: Matthew 15:21-28Daily Lectionary: Genesis 16:1-9, 15-17:22; Mark 6:1-13“And [Jesus] answered, ‘It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.'” (Matthew 15:26)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Jesus calls her what?!? A dog! What many Jews labeled the Canaanites! Looks like a roadblock! A wall! This mommy doesn't slink away, though, with her tail between her legs. Not defeated. What appears to be a pure “NO”, she hears as a “NO” that has a “YES” inside. A hidden “YES”! “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” (Matthew 15:27) “Ain't nothing but a hound dog!”Fine with her because even the dogs are family! Canaanites are part of Jesus' family tree. Rahab! Tamar! Ruth! Jew AND Gentile included in Jesus' Salvation Mission from day one! She believes that. Jesus is for her, even when everything says otherwise. She won't let Him go until she's proven right. And she is! She goes on her journey back home with His “for you” Word in her pocket! “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” (Matthew 15:28) Jesus doesn't disappoint! Brings her beyond the wall, and she returns home not the same. Stretched! Surprised! Severed! Jesus stretched her to the breaking point, so she finds help and hope in Him alone. Jesus surprised her with growth, enlarging her heart to wait on Him alone. Jesus severed her from all attachments and allegiances that she feared, loved, and trusted, so He became her God and Lord alone! She expects walls ahead, but she can trust Jesus at every wall. He'll bring her through. We'll have those moments where it's like we're on the autobahn of faith—cruising along and making the lights. Getting to our destinations. Sure, a few hiccups, but nothing horrible. Then one day, we slam the brakes. We only see red. Stopped! Stuck! What a standstill! All our plans thrown out the window. A wall before us. Can't get around it, over it, under it. What a wall! The wall comes in many shapes and sizes. Parents separate! Betrayed by friends! Shattered dreams! Failed a class! Cut from the team! A beloved family member dies! When we run up against the wall, we're confused. “Jesus loves me this I know!”Really? Jesus doesn't seem warm and friendly. No matter the wall, though, we cling to Jesus like this mommy. We trust Him at the wall. After all, on the Cross, He confronted all the walls we could ever run up against. And on Easter, He walked out of the Grave. Alive and well! The way through has been paved and paid! The journey of faith has begun, and Jesus will bring us through every wall. Not the same either. And certainly not alone. We're surrounded by one another. And Jesus leads the way. In the Name + of Jesus. I. The Setup — Obedience Leads Into a Storm Jesus initiates the journey: “Let's cross to the other side.” They obey—and encounter chaos. Obedience does not exempt us from storms. The storm is real, violent, and life-threatening. II. Understanding Fear Fear activates survival instincts (fight, flight, freeze). Fear bypasses logic and clouds perception. Logically: Jesus said they would reach the other side. Jesus was physically in the boat. Yet fear overrides what they know to be true. Fear is not failure—it is a signal. III. The Question Beneath the Panic “Teacher, don't you care?” The storm triggered survival fear. But the deeper fear was abandonment. When storms arise, we question God's heart. Fear whispers: “You are not safe because you are not in control.” Faith says: “I may not be in control, but He is present.” IV. Question Your Fear Jesus asks: “Why are you afraid?” Not condemnation—diagnosis. Fear reveals misplaced trust. The storm did not create fear; it exposed what was already in them. They trusted the waves more than His presence. V. The Sleeping Christ Jesus sleeping is not indifference. His rest reveals sovereignty. The sleeping Christ is not the absent Christ. VI. Authority Over Chaos Jesus does not pray for the storm to stop—He commands it. In Scripture, the sea represents chaos and disorder. Only God rebukes the sea. Jesus speaks directly to creation—and it obeys. This is divine authority on display. VII. Two Fears in the Passage Survival Fear – panic, loss of control, fear of death. Reverent Fear – awe at divine authority. The first fear leads to frenzy. The second fear leads to worship. When Christ's authority becomes greater than your storm, anxiety shrinks. VIII. The Invitation Jesus never promised a storm-free existence. He revealed Himself as Lord over storms. Peace is not the absence of waves. Peace is the presence of Jesus in the boat. Mature faith is anchored in Him—not in outcomes, control, or calm circumstances. When authority produces awe, fear no longer rules you.
