Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2021 5:58

Our long dead friend, Mary Garden, talks about the coup de glotte, or 'shock of the glottis'. It's a term used in the theory of singing technique to describe a particular method of emitting or opening a note by an abrupt physical mechanism of the glottis (the space between the vocal folds). It's a technique I used to sing with that ultimately got me into a lot of vocal trouble. I'm with Mary on this one... avoid it. I have been reading the book Atomic Habits. I've implemented a couple of the techniques from the book and it's really changed my life over the past few weeks. I wanted to drop a note about some of the techniques I use to build in better habits. 1. Set a date and time for the habit you want (ie. At 8:00a I will practice my scales) 2. Habit stacking. (ie. after my scales I will study a language, then I will do 5 minutes of yoga) 3. Set a timer! Want to practice for 25 minutes? Don't eyeball it. Set a timer and sit down (or stand up) and work! Let's build some great habits together so that we can all become better singers and make singing every day a habit! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sing-every-day/message

    Posture Technique

I stumbled across this easy technique for finding good posture from Great Singers on the Art of Singing... Check it out! 1. Stand on the balls of your feet, heels just touching the floor. 2. Hold your arms at your side in a relaxed condition. 3. Move your arms forward until they form an angle of forty-five degrees with the body. Press the palms down until the chest is up comfortably. 4. Now let your arms drop back without letting your chest fall. Feel a sense of ease and freedom over the whole body. Breath naturally and deeply.
