Is it possible for us to ever wholeheartedly trust a machine the way we would a human? According to Charles Duhigg, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author of The Power of Habit and Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection, the answer is no. And that's what stops us from being able to emotionally connect with AI chatbots. In this episode of Pioneers of AI, host Rana el Kaliouby and Duhigg dissect what's really happening when people confide in ChatGPT and why real connection depends on reciprocity and vulnerability, two things AI can't offer.Follow Pioneers of AI on all channels: https://linktr.ee/pioneersofaiSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Communication is one of those things we all do every day and still manage to get spectacularly wrong. Charles Duhigg has spent years studying why that happens. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, the bestselling author of The Power of Habit, and author of the new book, Supercommunicators. In this episode of Women Amplified, host Lisa Bennett talks with Duhigg about why conversations go sideways and what the best communicators do differently.
How do you help someone see their own work more clearly without breaking their spirit? In this episode of our "Great Coaches" series, Kelly talks with her editor Andy Ward about the delicate art of literary coaching—knowing when to push a writer toward uncomfortable truths and when to step back and let them find their own way. Through stories about working with David Sedaris, George Saunders and the posthumous publication of When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, Andy reveals how great editing is really about asking the right questions, building trust through close attention and helping writers discover what their book is truly about. This conversation covers the psychology of creative partnership, the vulnerability of sharing early drafts and why the best coaches never impose their vision but instead help others see their own more clearly. It's a "must listen" for anyone interested in writing. Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit! Proverbs chapter 11 is loaded with instructions on how to live in a way that pleases God. Righteousness is blessed by God. In contrast, wickedness leads to destruction. We don't use terms like "righteousness" or "wickedness" in everyday speech, but these are two polar opposites that happen daily. Righteousness is living in accordance with God's Word. Wickedness moves us away from walking with God, trading godliness for evil practices. Here's a verse to remind us of the contrast: "The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness." Are you a senior corporate leader or high-performing director relying on your company's learning and development budget to dictate your personal growth and future security? In this empowering solo episode, host Billy Keels reacts to a powerful life lesson from fellow podcaster Chris Williamson: no one is coming to save you. Billy pulls back the curtain on why market-leading multinationals constantly put their money where their mouth is—investing massive financial resources into technical skills, soft skills, and elite methodologies like MEDDIC or Challenger Sales to fuel their corporate organism. Discover why you must break the habit of putting yourself last, treat your personal transition as your own business line item, and aggressively invest your own time, effort, and capital into guided frameworks that unlock a predictable pathway to optionality while you continue to excel at your 9-to-5.
Do you say "um," "like," or "so" more than you realize? In this episode, we break down why fillers creep into our speech and how they quietly undermine your credibility as a speaker. You'll learn the two main reasons fillers happen — an instinctive discomfort with silence, and a habit of stalling while you think — and why simply becoming aware of them is the first step toward eliminating them for good. From there, we walk through a practical, low-cost method for training yourself out of the habit: the dog training clicker technique. You'll hear exactly how it works, why it's so effective at building self-awareness, and how to replace fillers with something far more powerful — the pause. By the end of this episode, you'll have a clear action step to start practicing immediately.

Bobby and Wally open the episode reflecting on recent experiences at Oshkosh, including social media feedback and a memorable interaction with a young aviation enthusiast whose parents are pilots. They then dive into the main topic of Episode 200, The Flight Before the Flight, stressing that most poor decisions occur during pre-flight preparation rather than in the air. The night-before sequence covers weather outlook briefings using multiple apps and 1-800-WX-BRIEF for human insight, verification of aircraft records especially for older experimental planes with modern avionics like G5 systems, fuel planning with extra margins beyond legal minimums, and self-assessment of fitness including illness or medication effects. On the morning of the flight they recommend re-evaluating forecasts against actual conditions observed outside and applying personal minimums that may differ by aircraft type such as the Saratoga versus a tailwheel. The hosts stress making these steps habitual through a simple card system and the PAVE checklist while inviting listener confessions about past decisions, shared personal minimums, and feedback on what they always check the night before. Wally adds insights from international flying on the importance of sleep management. They close by recommending the AOPA VFR personal minimums sheet and an ALPA Air Safety Institute case study called Fair Weather Flyer.

Why do some people command influence while you stay invisible, no matter how hard you work? Influence is not a performance you switch on in the room, it is the compound result of three habits. You are paid for how well you perform. The next level pays for how deeply you influence. See where you stand: https://masteryinsights.com/mentorship-pc What are the three habits of influential people? The three habits of influential people are the practices that build genuine influence rather than the appearance of it: prioritizing personal growth over performance improvement, treating influence as a learnable ability, and developing wisdom instead of accumulating knowledge. Performance keeps you valuable as an implementer, but influence operates through communication, presence, energy, and the network you build, which is why influential people invest in who they are becoming rather than how much they produce. Influence itself is the art and science of moving an audience to change their own perceptions and behaviours because of what you communicated, which means it is a skill developed through time and consistent action, not a privilege granted or a status you can demand. Wisdom is the final habit, mastering a skill set so thoroughly that it becomes second nature, so you lead in your domain with confidence because you influence by the depth of your understanding rather than the size of your knowledge base. Key Concepts Personal growth over performance: The first habit is investing in who you are becoming rather than how much you produce, because influence runs on communication, presence, and connection rather than output. Influence as an ability: Influence is a skill, the art and science of moving an audience to change their own perceptions and behaviours because of what you communicated, developed through time and consistent action rather than granted or demanded. Wisdom over knowledge: The third habit is developing mastery so deep it becomes second nature, because you influence by the depth of your understanding of what you know, not by how much you know. The implementer versus the influencer: The implementer is valued for performing tasks well, while the influencer is valued for shaping how people perceive and act, and the two are rewarded at different levels. Which of the three habits have you been neglecting while you kept perfecting your performance? We talk more openly about mental health than ever. So why is alcohol so often left out of the conversation?Millie Gooch believes Britain's relationship with drinking is overdue for a rethink. After struggling with binge drinking and anxiety herself, she founded Sober Girl Society and has become one of the leading voices calling for a more honest conversation about alcohol, addiction and wellbeing. In this episode of Ways to Change the World, Krishnan Guru-Murthy speaks to Millie about the science behind "hangxiety" (hangover anxiety), why moderation is harder for some people than others, the stigma surrounding addiction, and whether Britain's drinking culture is preventing us from asking difficult questions. They discuss the alcohol industry's influence, the changing habits of younger generations, and why Millie believes giving people better information - not banning alcohol - is the way forward. This episode features conversation around suicide.
You picked up your phone 186 times yesterday. That's not a discipline problem, it's a hunger problem. This week we trace the ache behind the scroll back to Augustine and forward to the empty tomb, and land on the strange freedom of a faith that doesn't need you to fix yourself first. When you scroll, you're looking for something real. The compulsion isn't random, and it's not just weak willpower. It's a hunger for heaven, misdirected. Samuel James calls the internet an "epistemological habitat" — not a tool you use but an environment that shapes what you crave, what you notice, and what you believe is true. And it's designed by teams of behavioral psychologists who know your patterns better than you do. We walk through the five digital liturgies that form us online, the structural forces stacked against you (and why shame is the wrong frame), and then what Jesus actually offers when you're starving for something real. Jamie Smith is a Reformed philosopher — one of the first to put a Catholic mystic in the title of a book and then proceed to argue that it was the contemplative tradition that brought him back to a flourishing form of faith on the far side of a series of nerdy dead ends. Make Your Home in the Luminous Dark is his most personal and, I would argue, most beautiful book. It began the day, more than a decade ago, when Jamie was in the depths of a severe depression his analytical philosophical training could not think its way out of, and his wife came home from a garage sale with a battered used copy of The Dark Night of the Soul and told him he should read it. What that began — St. John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Meister Eckhart, Merton — is what this book bears witness to. It is a book about the mystics saving Jamie's faith. It is also a Reformed philosopher's argument that the cultural liturgies project he is best known for needs a prior undoing before its formative work can do anything at all. As I told Jamie in the hour, this is a book that made me feel uncomfortable about how much I enjoyed it. We covered the apophatic/cataphatic distinction with the twist Jamie puts on it, the way certainty is still Cartesian even when it calls itself pious, the trad-wife/manosphere as snorting modernity while claiming to have escaped it, Charles Taylor's Cosmic Connections as the real sequel to A Secular Age, and what to do when Distraction Inc. has fully occupied the inner room. The platform is the plantation. Come sit with this one and check out the book. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube About our guest Dr. James K.A. Episode OverviewHow can anglers turn a slow, hot summer on the water into long-term improvement? On this Casting Angles installment of The Articulate Fly fly fishing podcast, host Marvin Cash and Master Casting Instructor Mac Brown of Mac Brown Fly Fish and Fly Fishing Guide School make the case for using the dog days of summer to build better habits rather than force uncomfortable and unproductive trips. With trout fishing tough across the region during the summer heat and low water, and even bass and panfish uncomfortable in the worst of the heat, Mac and Marvin steer anglers toward a different kind of productivity: process and habit. The conversation ranges from tying knots until they become an automatic three-to-four-second motion, to practicing casting distance so a 25-foot caster can reach the 50 feet needed for winter tailwater fishing, to organizing gear so nippers, tippet and other tools live in the same spot every time. Mac shares how decades of guiding and teaching shaped his own systems, including switching to magnetic zingers to keep tippet spools accessible. The pair frame these small, repeatable habits as the foundation that frees up mental bandwidth for the decisions that actually matter on the water, like reading what fish are eating and where they are holding. The episode closes with a look ahead to Mac's fall Fly Casting Mastery Workshop and fall fly fishing guide schools, which kick off in September and October.Key TakeawaysWhy establishing consistent habits and processes frees up mental bandwidth to focus on what matters on the water, like reading insect activity and locating fish. How to practice tying knots until they become a fast, automatic three-to-four-second motion instead of something to relearn under pressure on the water. When to use slow, hot summer conditions as an opportunity to drill casting distance and other fundamentals. Why keeping gear like nippers and tippet spools in the same consistent spot on a vest, sling pack or lanyard builds muscle memory that pays off even when fishing at night. How to use magnetic zingers to keep tippet spools quickly accessible. When to work on extending casting distance, such as building from a 25-foot cast toward the 50 feet needed for winter tailwater fishing.Techniques & Gear CoveredThe conversation centers on deliberate practice rather than any single on-water technique, covering knot tying (including the double Davy knot) as a foundational skill worth drilling until it takes just three to four seconds, and casting distance practice aimed at closing the gap between a caster's current range and the roughly 50 feet often needed. Mac and Marvin also dig into gear organization, discussing the shift from traditional tippet spool holders to magnetic zingers for faster access, and the value of always mounting nippers, tippet and other tools in the same position on a vest, sling pack or minimalist lanyard setup. For anglers looking to sharpen their own knot-tying habits, see It's Better to Be Knotty Than Nice for a breakdown of core fly line to leader, leader to tippet and tippet to fly knots.FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredWhy is practicing process and habit important during slow summer fishing?Slow, hot summer conditions create an opportunity to work on habits like knots, casting and gear organization without the pressure of active fishing. Mac and Marvin argue that the more of these small tasks an angler can make automatic, the more mental space they have on the water to focus on what really matters, like reading conditions and finding fish. How should anglers practice tying knots to make them second nature?Mac recommends treating knot tying as a simple three-to-four-second process that should not require conscious thought, especially in challenging conditions like cold fingers or low light. Practicing during comfortable, low-pressure moments builds the muscle memory needed to tie knots quickly and correctly when it counts. What is a simple way to organize tippet for quicker access on the water?Mac switched from traditional tippet spool holders, where a needed size can slide underneath a keeper and get buried, to magnetic zingers that let him pull a spool, use it and put it right back. He notes it took years to streamline this habit, but it eliminated the hassle of digging around for tippet mid-day.Why does consistent gear placement matter for anglers?Mac keeps his nippers and other tools in the exact same spot on his gear every time, whether on a vest or a lanyard, so he can find them without thinking, including in low-light or night fishing situations. Marvin adds that this kind of consistency turns fumbling for gear into a non-issue, leaving more attention for actual fishing decisions. When should anglers work on extending their casting distance?Mac suggests using slow fishing days to build toward specific goals, such as growing from a 25-foot cast to the roughly 50 feet often needed for effective fishing presentations. Practicing in non-angling situations, rather than under fishing pressure on the water, makes it easier to develop that extra distance before it is actually needed.Related ContentS8, Ep 53 - Cool Waters and Hot Days: Mac Brown's Guide to Summer FishingS8, Ep 49 - Mastering the Cast: Mac Brown's Insights on Shooting LineS7, Ep 20 - Practice Makes Perfect: Mac Brown on Mastering Casting TechniquesIt's Better to Be Knotty Than NiceView All Casting Angles Episodes with Mac BrownConnect with Our GuestFollow Mac on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.Follow the ShowFollow The Articulate Fly on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and YouTube.Follow our Substack newsletter for episode updates, tips and resources.Support the ShowShop through our Amazon link to support the podcast.Join our Patreon community to support the show.If you are in the industry and need help getting unstuck, learn more about our consulting options.Subscribe & AdvertiseSubscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcast app.Think our community is a good fit for your brand? In today's episode, Gina discusses Claire Weekes' idea of "the habit of fear" and how anxiety is often largely a learned pattern of sensations, interpretation of these sensations and exaggerated emotional reactions to these sensations and interpretations. Learning to reinterpret anxiety related bodily sensations as not necessarily threatening or dangerous can go a long way to helping us in our anxiety recovery. Listen in and strengthen your ability to interpret bodily sensations and environmental factors in ways that do not signal danger to your body-mind and become more resilient and less anxious today!Stillpoint Fridays is my once-a-week Friday note — a slower, more personal reflection that's different from what I share on the podcast. If you'd like a quiet place to land as the week winds down, you can join here: http://eepurl.com/bR2F9P or on our website anxietycoachespodcast.com and sign up for the newsletter. Please visit our Sponsor Page to find all the links and codes for our awesome sponsors! https://www.theanxietycoachespodcast.com/sponsors/Website https://www.theanxietycoachespodcast.comJoin our community Group Coaching Join our Group Coaching Full or Mini Membership Program1:1 Coaching Learn more about our One-on-One CoachingIf you prefer to listen AD-FREE, try our Supercast premium access membership:Learn more about anxiety What is anxiety?Free Guided Meditation for Calming Your Anxious Mind 10-Minute Body-Scan Meditation for AnxietyQuote:Do not be bluffed by your feelings.-Claire WeekesChapters0:27 Habit of Fear6:14 Don't Be Bluffed7:42 Predictive Brain Explained12:47 New Paths of Recovery18:04 Learning, Not Just Knowing22:12 Practical Steps to Respond25:41 Anxiety Returning AgainSummaryIn this episode we explore Claire Weekes' idea of the “habit of fear” and how anxiety can become a learned pattern through repetition. We discuss how fear may start with a body sensation, a frightening interpretation, and then more physical alarm, until the brain begins to expect danger from similar cues.We explain that the nervous system can become sensitized and that modern terms such as conditioned responses, neural pathways, and the predictive brain help describe the same process. We look at how the brain makes predictions from past experiences and how those predictions can trigger checking, bracing, avoidance, and reassurance seeking. We also cover Claire Weekes's reminder to “not be bluffed by your feelings,” meaning that sensations can feel convincing without actually signaling danger. We discuss how short-term relief can reinforce the old fear pathway, while allowing sensations, thoughts, and uncertainty without reacting helps create a new response. Finally, we emphasize that progress is not measured by never feeling fear again. We focus on returning to ordinary life, reducing monitoring, and noticing when an old alarm is active without treating it as an emergency.#Anxiety #AnxietyCoachesPodcast #GinaRyan #ClaireWeeks #HabitOfFear #AnxietyRelief #PanicAttack #NervousSystem #NervousSystemRegulation #PredictiveBrain #NeuralPathways #ConditionedResponse #AnxietyRecovery #OvercomingAnxiety #AcceptanceAndCommitment #IntrusiveThoughts #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #StressRelief #Mindfulness #SelfCare #EmotionalWellness #AnxietySupport #InnerPeace #CalmYourMind #HealYourNervousSystem #BodyAwareness #Overthinking #MentalWellness #HolisticHealth #ACPSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode Description:This is a From the Archive episode with Ray Dalio. Ray Dalio built Bridgewater Associates into one of the most influential investment firms in the world. But in this archive conversation, James is less interested in the headline version of success and more interested in the painful turning point that made Ray rethink everything. At 34, Ray's business nearly failed. He had been confident—by his own description, arrogant—and a wrong market call left him broke, humbled, and forced to decide whether to quit or rebuild. That failure became the origin story behind many of his principles.Ray explains that the experience taught him to fear being wrong in a useful way. Instead of retreating, he began seeking out the smartest people who disagreed with him. He learned to triangulate among independent thinkers, write down his decision criteria, study how similar events had happened in history, and build systems that reduced risk without giving up upside. The conversation then moves into the central ideas of Principles: pain plus reflection equals progress; failure equals success if you turn it into learning; and every person should write down the principles they use to deal with reality.James and Ray discuss the five-step process for success: set audacious goals, identify the problems blocking those goals, diagnose root causes, design ways around them, and execute. Ray emphasizes that no one is good at all five steps, which is why people need others who can supply the strengths they lack.A large part of the episode focuses on Bridgewater's culture. Ray explains idea meritocracy, radical truth, radical transparency, thoughtful disagreement, and believability-weighted decision-making. In his view, the goal is not democracy or autocracy. The goal is to get the best ideas on the table, stress test them, and make better decisions.James pushes on the human side of this: what happens when disagreement feels like a fight? Ray answers by describing the “two yous”—the thoughtful, logical self and the emotional, reactive self—and why writing down principles can clarify which values bring people together and which values separate them. The conversation closes with habits, meditation, creativity, the economy, debt cycles, wealth inequality, cryptocurrencies, and Ray's formula for a successful life: dreams plus reality plus determination.Editorial Note:This is a From the Archive episode. References to Bridgewater's assets, Ray's Forbes net worth, the economic cycle, cryptocurrencies, interest rates, central-bank policy, and current market conditions reflect the original recording period. This episode discusses investing, markets, debt cycles, and cryptocurrencies, but it should not be treated as financial advice. What You'll Learn; Why Ray Dalio sees his early career failure as one of the most important events of his life. How being wrong pushed him toward radical open-mindedness.Why Ray believes pain plus reflection equals progress. How to turn mistakes into principles you can use next time. Why failure can become success if it produces learning. The five-step process Ray uses for achieving goals. Why no one is good at every step of success. How thoughtful disagreement can improve decision-making.What an idea meritocracy is and why Bridgewater built around it.How believability-weighted decision-making differs from democracy or hierarchy. Why Ray believes meaningful work and meaningful relationships must go together. How writing down principles clarifies relationships, teams, and personal choices. Why habits control so much of life—and how they can be changed. How meditation helps Ray access calm, creativity, and clearer thinking. How Ray thinks about debt cycles, economic risk, wealth inequality, and cryptocurrencies.Timestamped Chapters:[03:00] The Failure cycles, long-term debt cycles, central-bank policy, and where the economy sat at the time.[01:07:29] Two Economies and Wealth InequalityRay explains why averages can hide the economic reality of the bottom 60% versus the top 40%.[01:11:00] Cryptocurrencies and BlockchainRay distinguishes blockchain technology from individual crypto assets and compares the space to the early internet.[01:14:26]
