Tired of Waiting for What You Want August 3, 2026 | Episode 5511 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Are you tired of waiting for your life to show up? After almost 20 years of doing this show, that's the complaint I hear most. You're working hard, doing the thing, and still not quite there. You're not lazy. You're patient to a fault. Somewhere along the way, patience became permission to stall. Today I'm asking a different question: what if you could make up for ten years in one? Not by hustling harder. By stopping the wait. Pick one thing, change it today, and watch everything cascade from there. Featured Story My studio is a hot mess right now — cameras, microphones, and lights stacked everywhere for my Death Valley trip. Squeezed between the gear, I got thinking about my wife, Joy. She's upbeat, optimistic, motivational — and she drives me crazy in one specific way. I come up with an idea, and she says, okay, we'll get to that... maybe next year. I don't even understand it. Scott gets an idea; Scott does an idea like a caveman. But most of the world works like Joy — patient, careful, waiting. And the personal growth business has no incentive to get you anywhere fast. If you arrive, subscriptions end. I'm not that guy. I want you to arrive. Important Points Most people waiting on life aren't lazy — they're patient to a fault, and that patience is what's stalling them. Crisis compresses a decade into months because it permits you to change. You don't have to wait for one. Pick the one change that cascades across every single part of your life, and decide to make it today — not someday. Memorable Quotes You're not lazy. You are patient to a fault — so patient it's stalling you. Patience became your permission to wait. There's no incentive to get you anywhere fast. If you arrive, subscriptions end. I actually want you to arrive. You don't add ten times more. You stop waiting ten times longer. Same math, opposite direction. Ten years in one. Scott's Three-Step Approach Spot where patience has become permission to stall — the place you keep waiting for life to show up on its own. Pick the one thing that could take ten years to reach — the one that would cascade across every part of your life. Decide to change it today, then name what you'll give up to make room, because the trade is what makes it stick. Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they take a chilling deep dive into the life and crimes of one of America's most notorious serial killers: Ed Kemper, the “Co-Ed Killer.” In this episode, we explore the disturbing story of a man whose horrific crimes were matched by his remarkable ability to articulate his thoughts and seemingly understand the gravity of what he had done. From his deeply troubled childhood and early criminal behavior to the murders that ultimately made him infamous, we examine the events that shaped Kemper's path toward becoming a serial killer. We discuss Kemper's reported mental health diagnosis, his disturbing relationship with his mother, and the murders of multiple young women before turning to the shocking killings of his mother and her friend. How could someone commit such horrific acts while simultaneously providing such detailed insight into his own thoughts and behavior? The conversation also dives into one of the most difficult questions surrounding violent crime: What does it actually mean to be legally insane? We examine Kemper's trial, his sentencing, his cooperation with law enforcement, and the conflicting perspectives surrounding his mental state. Was Ed Kemper truly unable to understand right from wrong—or was he fully aware of what he was doing? And when someone can calmly explain their actions after committing unimaginable violence, where does mental illness end and criminal responsibility begin? We explore the complicated intersection of serial killers, psychology, mental illness, criminal investigations, and the insanity defense, while confronting the uncomfortable reality that understanding a killer's mind doesn't necessarily explain—or excuse—their actions. *Please note all opinions in the show are our own and solely in regards to the specific case we are discussing in this episode* We made a one stop shop for all the Eye for an Eye links our listeners might want to check out whether its where to listen, our merch shop, all of our socials, our email, or ways to support the show, we'd love for you to visit the link below! https://msha.ke/eyeforeyepod/ Tired of Ads? Welcome to The Daily. Partner with us in Project23. Grab your Hosea Scripture Journal. Our text today is Hosea 12:12-13 Jacob fled to the land of Aram; there Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he guarded sheep. By a prophet the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt, and by a prophet he was guarded. — Hosea 12:12-13 Today, Hosea brings Israel back to Jacob. Jacob was not impressive at first. He was running. Vulnerable. Uncertain. Working long days guarding sheep and trying to survive. In the same way, Israel's story did not begin with strength. It began with dependence. That is how most of us begin. Unpolished. Tired. Broken. Searching. Wandering people. People who realize they can no longer carry themselves. Remember, your spiritual beginnings matter. It reminds you who you were before God changed you. It keeps gratitude alive. It keeps pride from taking over. It reminds you that your life today was built on grace, not self-sufficiency. I think about this often in my own life. Some of my earliest spiritual memories take me back to sitting with my grandfather in his old '58 Chevy truck. Simple moments. Conversations about God. Quiet beginnings that did not seem monumental at the time, yet God was planting seeds that would shape the rest of my life. And those humble beginnings are still important to me. Because remembering where God first met me softens me. It reminds me that everything meaningful God has done in my life started with His grace long before I understood what He was doing. Believers become spiritually dangerous when they forget their beginnings. They start acting self-made. Self-righteous. Independent. Self-important. And this weakens your dependence on God. So remember your story. Remember the prayers prayed over you. Remember the people God used. Remember the moments you were desperate for Him. Remember the season when faith was simple and honest and dependent. Go back there for a moment. Back to the moment you first realized you needed God. Back to the grace that found you and dependent on the God who carried you this far. And if you feel so convicted, share that moment in the comments below. DO THIS: Spend time today remembering and thanking God for the people, moments, and humble beginnings He used to draw you toward Him. ASK THIS: Have I forgotten where God first found me? What early moments or people helped shape my faith? How can remembering my beginnings deepen my humility today? PRAY THIS: Father, thank you for meeting me in my weakness and drawing me to yourself. Help me never forget the humble beginnings of my faith or lose sight of the grace that carried me here. Amen. PLAY THIS: "God of All My Days"
Angel Santana invites listeners into a story that unfolds in the quiet moments—when doors stay closed, days feel ordinary, and purpose seems distant. Using the image of a builder laying a hidden foundation and examples from scripture, he reveals how God shapes character before calling, turning setbacks into strength. Through candid testimony and compassionate counsel, this episode reframes waiting as preparation. You'll be challenged to reflect on lessons learned, to thank God for unseen growth, and to pray for patience and courage as your story continues to be written. Stay faithful in the ordinary; the next chapter is being prepared behind the scenes, and you may be closer to your purpose than you think. What does it really mean to follow Jesus in everyday life? In this powerful 10-part series, Angel Santana explores the questions many Christians ask but are often afraid to say out loud. Whether you're struggling with doubt, waiting on God, searching for purpose, or simply trying to grow in your faith, these conversations are designed to encourage, challenge, and remind you that you're never walking alone. ✨ Episode 1 – Why Does God Feel Silent? ✨ Episode 2 – I'm Tired of Pretending I'm Okay ✨ Episode 3 – What If I Don't Feel Saved? ✨ Episode 4 – Comparison Is Killing Your Calling ✨ Episode 5 – Learning to Hear God's Voice ✨ Episode 6 – When Your Prayers Go Unanswered ✨ Episode 7 – Stop Trying to Be the Perfect Christian ✨ Episode 8 – Friendships That Bring You Closer to Jesus ✨ Episode 9 – What Is God Preparing You For? ✨ Episode 10 – You're Closer Than You Think This isn't just a podcast series—it's an invitation to grow deeper in your walk with Christ, discover God's faithfulness in every season, and take the next faithful step. No matter where you are today, keep trusting, keep believing, and keep following Jesus.
Episode 10 opens with a simple invitation: after ten honest conversations about faith, doubt, grace and growth, Angel Santana stands at the roadside of the soul and asks, "Are we there yet?" With a storyteller's warmth he traces the quiet, unseen steps that bring us closer to God—like the traveler who suddenly discovers an exit sign and realizes the journey was shorter than it felt. Through personal reflection, biblical memory, and a heart-check challenge to list ten ways God has shown up, this finale turns reflection into action. It's a gentle reminder that spiritual growth often happens day by day, and that the next faithful step—no matter how small—matters. Join Angel as he prays, encourages, and sends you out with one clear promise: your story isn't over, and you may be closer than you think. Have faith—let it begin. "How have you been?" — "Tired." It is the kind of answer delivered with a chuckle that quietly covers something much heavier underneath. Over ten years of interrupted sleep, four boys who simply do not sleep well in their early years, the exhaustion of pregnancy layered on top of toddler wakings, and a midnight prayer offered somewhere between one waking and the next: God, I know he is a gift — please help me. It is one of the most honest and most human prayers imaginable. And yet, what follows that midnight prayer is something remarkable: a morning realization that weakness has a way of producing what strength never could. When the flesh is genuinely humbled, dependence on God stops being a spiritual discipline and becomes the only option. Fruit grows in that place. The Spirit moves more freely there. Psalm 30:4-5 does not minimize the night of weeping — it simply refuses to let it be the final word. His favor lasts a lifetime. A shout of joy comes in the morning. For those in a season of great difficulty right now, that promise may feel impossibly far away. But the invitation of this episode is urgent and tender all at once: cry out to the Lord, lean on His grace, trust that He is working in the middle of the trial for your good and for His glory, and lift your gaze long enough to choose worship — not because the pain is gone, but because He is faithful even while it remains. Today's Bible Verse "Weeping may last for the night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning."— Psalm 30:5, NASB Ponder Today Suffering has a way of producing what ease never could. When the flesh is genuinely weakened and we are humbled to our knees, dependence on God becomes not a discipline but a necessity — and in that place, fruit grows and the Spirit moves freely. His favor lasts a lifetime — even when the night feels unending. Psalm 30:5 does not promise a short night. It promises that the night is not the final word. Joy is coming in the morning, in His time and according to His purposes. Cry out to God in the middle of the trial, not just before and after it. The midnight prayer offered in exhaustion — God, I know he is a gift, please help me — is exactly the kind of prayer He is near to and ready to meet. The purpose of pain is often to draw us back to our Father. When life becomes too heavy to carry alone, we are reminded of what was always true: He is near, He is worthy of our praise, and He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). Choose worship before the circumstances change. Praising God in the weary season is not denial — it is one of the most powerful acts of faith available to us. He is faithful whether or not our circumstances shift, and our worship declares that truth out loud. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, I am so weary and weighed down by my current life circumstances. It is difficult for me to see the gift in this trial, but I trust You are using it for my good and for Your glory. Help me to have eyes to see that You are working in my life. My circumstances may not change anytime soon, but please change me in my circumstances to look more like Jesus. Strengthen my faith so that I can lift my voice and praise You, trusting that joy is coming in Your perfect timing. I may be weary, but I choose to worship You because You are forever faithful to me. Help me to look to You and point others to You in this season. You are good. In Jesus' name, Amen. You probably know Rebecca Rittenhouse from her roles on The Mindy Project, Blood & Oil, His & Hers, and more. But behind the success was an industry that required constant resilience, rejection, and the ability to keep showing up even when the answer was no. When the pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes brought uncertainty to her career, Rebecca was forced to confront how much of her future depended on being chosen by others. That moment pushed her to take control, step into the unknown, and build something of her own: Privet Beauty. In this episode of Superwomen, Rebecca shares how her years as an actor prepared her for entrepreneurship, why creating her own opportunities became essential, and what she had to learn (and unlearn) in order to become the founder she is today. I don't know about you, but my social media feed is filled with stuff that is supposed to “give me more energy” to get through perimenopause. What does that even mean? Perimenopause isn't causing fatigue for no reason. Your body is doing things: some are new, and some are a sort of inverse callback to your teenage years. Yeah, that's right – menopause is like a second puberty. Fun! This is work. It's like remodeling your house while you live inside it. There's a lot to change, a lot to update, some things to take offline, and all of it happens while you're in the midst of your daily needs for function, repair, healing, and growth. Those never truly stop, but the demands of the remodel can make them all slow down, or get more difficult. In this episode, Katja shares herbs who will do some of the work for you. By reducing inflammation in the blood vessels and in the digestive tract, and by keeping your lymphatic system flowing smoothly, you can free up a lot of resources inside the body so that your internal workload is lower. In a sense they serve to enhance your inner clean-up crews and help them function more efficiently. (It would be nice if they would also clean your actual house, but alas.)It doesn't take stimulants or adaptogens to do this job. We don't always need to solve feeling tired by going to the buzzy herbs. So if you're feeling tied, but you don't even have time to take a nap, at least these herbs can do some of your work for you! Here are the links Katja talked about in this video:The Reproductive Health course, which includes not just peri/menopause, but also everything else – endometriosis, PCOS/PMOS, managing your cycle, and more. What she remembers is not the drinking. It is the relief. She started drinking heavily as a teenager and kept going for decades. From the outside she looked successful and high functioning, right up until late 2017, when the wheels came off the cart and she found herself in inpatient detox. She got sober. Then she waited five more years to find out why she had been drinking in the first place. What if the habits our culture calls "normal" are actually the reason so many of us feel exhausted, inflamed, and worn down? In this episode, a Christian RN and holistic health coach takes an honest look at the everyday patterns many women accept without question — skipping workouts, relying on convenience food, running on caffeine, and quietly burning out while serving everyone but themselves. Most of us never chose these habits on purpose. We just absorbed them from everyone around us. This episode is an invitation to look at that inheritance honestly, and decide if it's actually serving you. Why Fitness Isn't About Weight Loss — It's About Longevity The episode opens with a challenge to a common assumption: that working out is mainly for weight loss. Instead, the case is made that consistent movement is one of the strongest predictors of a longer, healthier life — regardless of the number on the scale. Using the body's natural adaptability as an example (from breast milk production to muscle growth), the point is simple: your body responds to what you ask of it. Stop asking it to be strong, and it won't be. The Hidden Cost of "Convenient" Living From packaged snacks to daily takeout, convenience food has quietly become the American default. Drawing from her own nursing career and personal health journey, the host shares how she shifted from being "the queen of convenience" to intentionally packing whole-food meals, even while working a demanding hospice nursing job. This section reframes convenience eating not as a harmless habit, but as a slow, cumulative drain on the body — one that autoimmune and chronic illness often trace back to. Putting Yourself Last: A Pattern Worth Examining One of the more personal moments in the episode addresses a habit common among busy, driven women: skipping meals, ignoring hunger cues, and pushing through exhaustion to prove worth or productivity. The host names this pattern honestly, including her own past struggle with it, and connects it to a deeper root: pride and performance, rather than genuine calling. Suppressing Emotions in Christian Culture This section addresses something rarely said aloud in faith circles: the pressure to appear "fine" even when life is genuinely hard. Drawing a parallel to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the host makes the case that honesty with God — including sadness, dread, and grief — is not a lack of faith. It's an invitation to be fully known. When "Keep Serving" Becomes Harmful The episode closes its teaching portion with a hard truth for Christian women: serving others while drowning yourself is not sustainable, and it's not necessarily what God is asking of you. Using Jesus' own ministry pattern — specific people, specific places, intentional rest — the host challenges the belief that faithfulness means saying yes to everyone, all the time. Time-Stamped Highlights 00:00 — The core question of the episode: is "normal" culture making us sick? 01:26 — Why fitness (not weight loss) is tied to longevity 02:22 — The body's adaptability, explained through breastfeeding and strength training 04:19 — Why aches, fatigue, and constant caffeine use aren't actually "normal" 05:44 — A look inside a real workday as a hospice nurse, and why she packs her own lunch 10:32 — Naming the pattern of self-neglect that leads to bitterness and blame 12:53 — Suppressing true feelings in Christian culture, and the example of Jesus in Gethsemane 16:40 — Why people often need to be heard more than they need scripture quoted at them 17:08 — The "keep serving while you're drowning" mindset in church culture 21:03 — A sobering look at U.S. health outcomes and what "normal" is actually producing 23:28 — The two lies that keep people stuck: "it won't matter" and "I can't change" 24:25 — An invitation to identify one specific area God may be nudging you to address Key Takeaways The habits our culture treats as "normal" — skipping movement, relying on convenience food, running on stimulants, neglecting rest — carry a real, cumulative cost to long-term health. Self-neglect often isn't circumstantial; it can be a learned pattern rooted in pride, performance, or fear of being seen as needy. Emotional honesty with God is not a lack of faith. Naming pain doesn't cancel out gratitude or trust. Serving others faithfully doesn't require abandoning your own needs — even Jesus rested, withdrew, and ministered to specific people rather than everyone. Change doesn't require a total overhaul. One honest, specific step matters, and it's worth taking seriously. This episode isn't meant to diagnose or prescribe — it's meant to help you pause and honestly evaluate whether the "normal" you've accepted is actually serving your health, or slowly working against it. Ready to Understand What's Really Driving Your Exhaustion? If this episode hit close to home, don't just let the conviction pass by without action. You've heard the dreaded B word. Budget. Maybe you've never found one that actually sticks or maybe you're the opposite, and you feel pretty on top of your money already. Either way, this episode is going to shift how you see it.I first found Mike Michalowicz back in 2019 when I read Profit First, and it completely changed how I manage the finances here at The Pink Bee. So when his newest book, The Money Habit, came out, I devoured it. This one applies those same principles to home finances, which means you'll love it even if you're not an entrepreneur. One of my favorite parts of this conversation is when Mike and I realized his money system works exactly like the way our community already plans their time. Turns out the thing that finally makes your money make sense is treating your bank account like your calendar. In This Episode, I'll Cover:Why traditional budgets set you up to fail before you even start, and what Mike says to build instead. The number of hours a day the average person spends worrying about money, backed by a 2025 study that genuinely stopped me in my tracks. The system Mike uses to take money out of one confusing pile and give it the same at-a-glance clarity your calendar has.The one word swap that changes whether you stay buried in debt or actually dig your way out.Where to start if the whole thing feels like too much, because you do not have to do it all at once.Connect With Mike Michalowicz:www.mikemotorbike.comwww.facebook.com/MikeMichalowiczFanPage www.instagram.com/mikemichalowicz www.linkedin.com/in/mikemichalowicz ________________________________
Today I'm sitting down with my friend Kathy Lindberg to talk about God's call on our lives in this midlife season, and why answering it is never too late. Even if...those dreams have been deferred for a while now. God gives us the desires of our heart for a reason, and those desires do not retire at 40, 50, or 60. Feeling tired spiritually is real and often women feel they need to push through this fatigue even harder with more action. More doing. But your spirit whispers something different. If you are a high-achieving woman who has built a full life and still senses a quiet pull toward something deeper, you want to really lean into our conversation today. I have spent over a decade teaching God's daughters that we are called to steward our whole selves. Body, mind, and spirit. Treasuring your temple in midlife is not only physical. It begins with the health of your spirit and the consistency of your time in His Word. Kathy puts language to the question that reframes this entire season: "Where is the kingdom impact in what I am doing?" In this episode we get into: What Kathy is treasuring most in this season of life How her own story shaped her passion for discipling and equipping women What actually helps busy, distracted women reignite their love for God and build consistency in Scripture Why grounding yourself in the Word is foundational to maturing into your true identity in Christ I pray this blesses you and moves you to action! Back in 2017, I sat down with Anne Wilde, one of the foremost experts on modern-day polygamy. While I like to call her the First Lady of Fundamentalism, she has lived an incredibly unique life as an Independent Fundamentalist. For 33 years, Anne lived as the secret second wife of Ogden Kraut, a prolific fundamentalist author whose 65 books she personally helped write and edit. From the secret history of Mormon schisms to her own spiritual journey, you won’t want to miss this fascinating conversation! https://youtu.be/LH2zMt27kxM Don't miss our other conversations Shannon: https://gospeltangents.com/people/shannon-flynn Copyright © 2026 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Check out a transcript of the interview on Amazon. Pick up a transcript of our conversation! Raised in the mainstream LDS Church, Anne later became an “Independent Fundamentalist” and lived for 33 years as the secret second wife of prolific fundamentalist author Ogden Kraut. This sweeping conversation covers everything from the hidden history of Mormon schisms to controversial theology and modern civil rights. Hidden History of Post-Manifesto Polygamy Many believe plural marriage ended abruptly with the LDS Church’s 1890 Manifesto, but Anne explains it was more like a sunset: “when does it get dark? It’s just gradually.” She points to an uncanonized 1886 revelation received by Church President John Taylor, which fundamentalists believe declared plural marriage an everlasting covenant that could not be changed. Consequently, polygamy continued underground and in places like Mexico and Canada. It took the 1904 Second Manifesto and the 1933 Third Manifesto—which enforced excommunication for those practicing plural marriage—to create a permanent rift between the mainstream church and fundamentalist groups. Untangling the Polygamous Sects One of Anne’s main goals is to dispel the myth that all polygamists are the same. She breaks down the diverse landscape of modern polygamy: The AUB (Apostolic United Brethren): With about 7,500 members, this group has a priesthood council and allows members more free agency in choosing their spouses. (Kody Brown of the TV show Sister Wives comes from this tradition.) FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints): Notorious for the extreme one-man rule of Warren Jeffs, this group practices arranged marriages and strict dress codes. Anne notes that Jeffs’ oppressive control and habit of splitting up families has caused their numbers to plummet. Since he went to prison, the numbers are about 10% of what they were. Centennial Park: A breakaway group of about 2,000 members who separated from the FLDS because they wanted a priesthood council rather than a one-man dictatorship. Ervil LeBaron: Anne also discusses dangerous outliers like Ervil LeBaron, a militant polygamist who claimed his own priesthood authority and became an assassin responsible for roughly 20 deaths, including that of AUB leader Rulon Allred. Independent Fundamentalists: Anne identifies with this category—believers who adhere to early doctrines and plural marriage but choose not to affiliate with any centralized sect. Surprising Stances on Gay Marriage Despite their conservative theology, Anne reveals that many fundamentalists support the legalization of gay marriage. Viewing it through the lens of civil rights, she argues that if polygamists want the government to decriminalize their own family structures, they must grant the same free agency to the LGBTQ+ community. She also expressed deep disappointment with the LDS Church’s 2015 policy that temporarily barred the children of gay parents from being baptized, feeling it wrongly punished children. Anne Wilde’s Controversial Theology: Was Jesus a Polygamist? Anne Wilde and her late husband, Ogden Kraut, authored numerous books, including a highly popular 1969 text arguing that Jesus Christ was a polygamist. She suggests that the wedding feast at Cana was actually Christ’s own wedding, and that he was married to at least Mary, Martha, and Mary Magdalene. She also tackles difficult aspects of Doctrine and Covenants Section 132, such as the “Law of Sarah,” which ideally requires a first wife’s consent for subsequent marriages. However, Anne notes that if a first wife adamantly refuses to consent to a priesthood law, the husband is exempt from her approval and can marry anyway. Furthermore, she interprets the scriptural mentions of “concubines” not as sex slaves, but as lesser, non-covenant wives permitted by the customs of the era. Advocacy and the 2002 Olympics After living in secret for decades, Anne stepped into the public eye ahead of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Tired of seeing only bitter ex-members defining the narrative around plural marriage, Anne co-founded an advocacy group called “Principle Voices“. During the Olympics, they provided hundreds of press packets and fielded interviews with global media to offer a positive perspective on the lifestyle and to clearly distinguish themselves from the abuses of the FLDS church. Ultimately, Anne's story is a call for understanding. Whether you agree with her lifestyle or not, her experiences provide a rare, inside look at a marginalized community deeply woven into the fabric of Mormon history. Questions to ponder: 1. In what ways do the civil rights struggles of polygamists align with those of the LGBTQ+ community? 2. Why is it important to recognize the structural and cultural differences between various polygamous sects? 3. How does the “Law of Sarah” impact the balance of agency and power within a plural marriage? 4. What role does media representation play in shaping the narrative of marginalized or secretive religious communities? You could finish four books this year and only ever get to publish one of them. That's the traditional publishing timeline in a nutshell — and it's why more authors are quietly going hybrid: keeping one foot in a trad deal and self-publishing everything else on their own schedule, without waiting on anyone's calendar. In this episode, Beth and Lisa break down what a hybrid author actually is (not to be confused with a hybrid publisher — totally different thing), why it's suddenly everywhere in publishing conversations, and the different ways real authors are structuring it: splitting genres between trad and self-pub, keeping e-book/audio rights on a trad print deal, reissuing backlist titles that reverted back to them. They also get into the real tradeoffs — creative control and faster cash flow vs. running two jobs at once (author and small business owner) — plus a few authors doing it well right now, like Rebecca Thorne. Also in this episode: a shoutout to listener and author Kate McCarrell Moore's new release, Walter and Benny: Good Guys, Nature Spies, and a preview of next episode's guest, bestselling author Wendelin Van Draanen.Hit play, and if you're new here, follow the show — new episodes every week. Ten years on, jD sits down with three fans who were there the night the Tragically Hip played Vancouver on the Man Machine Poem tour — the second stop of Gord Downie's final run across Canada. Tina, Joe, and Shaun walk through the whole arc of that evening: the scramble for tickets when floor seats and Ticketmaster luck meant everything, the electric-but-apprehensive mood in the building as everyone wondered how Gord would hold up, and the moment his shaking hand during "Three Pistols" turned nerves into relief. The conversation ranges from the emotional gut-punches — "Grace, Too," "Bobcaygeon," "Tired as Fuck," and "At Transformation" — to the craft behind the show: the band huddling close around Gord like a bar band again, the retrospective set lists that pulled from nearly half their catalog, and the stripped-down staging that only fully landed watching the final concert on TV. Along the way there's talk of secondary-market ticket gouging and dynamic pricing, the pride of a country coming together over a rock band, and how each of them found their way home that night carrying a feeling Tina sums up perfectly: "How can you feel so empty and so full at the same time?"Next episode: July 26 — Vancouver Night 2, with a new panel.Tina from VancouverA devoted Hip fan (by her own admission the bigger fan in her household) who scored floor seats, row 26, through Ticketmaster while nearly everyone she knew was shut out. "Grace, Too" was the song that hit her hardest that night. By day she works for a Canadian pet-treat company.Only One Treats — Canadian-made pet treats with a single ingredient. He got into Vancouver Night 1 on a spare ticket from his cousin's daughter, sat on Rob's side of the arena, and has played Rob Baker in a Hip tribute, which shaped how closely he watched the band that night. "Bobcaygeon" is the song that still takes him back.Blue Collar Overdrive — his Bachman Turner Overdrive tribute band (Joe on bass, handling the Fred Turner vocals).Website: bluecollaroverdrive.comFacebook: facebook.com/bluecollaroverdriveUpcoming shows: Kamloops Rib Fest (Aug 9), Langley Rib Fest (Aug 14), Retro Fest at Sun Peaks (Aug 24)Shaun from VancouverA big fan who first heard the news — Gord's diagnosis and the one last tour — while riding the SkyTrain out to Surrey. He got a ticket on the first crack through Ticketmaster and watched from the rafters, just happy to be in the building. "Three Pistols" is forever linked for him to the image of Gord's shaking hand. Outside the music, he runs a pair of travel websites and recently drove an EV across Scandinavia to the top of Europe.thislifeandtrips.commyevtrips.comConnect with the PodcastWebsite: home.tthpods.comReach jD: JD@tthpods.comA presentation of the Tragically Hip Podcast Series.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/tthtop40/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
Jon Gustin is the founder of Tired Dad, a community of more than 2 million followers built on one honest premise: parenting is only hard for good parents. A former personal trainer of 14 years who started making short videos during the sleepless newborn stretch of 2020, he became one of the first men online talking openly about the mental load of fatherhood. He co-hosts the Tired Dad and Tired Mom podcasts with his wife Jessica and released his book The Tired Dad: 100 Reflections on Showing Up for What Matters Most in May. Larry and Jon get into the exhaustion that comes from doing the work right, both of their fathers coming home from Vietnam unable to talk about it, the rebellion and loss that followed Jon's parents' divorce, and the ego death that pulled his marriage out of the roommate phase. If you're tired in the best way possible and still wondering whether you're doing a good job, this conversation is for you. Timeline Summary [1:02] – Parenting is only hard for good parents, and why tired means invested [3:19] – Tired from parenting, not tired of parenting [6:23] – How the newborn stretch of 2020 accidentally birthed Tired Dad [8:10] – Nobody was talking about the mental load of fatherhood, so Jon did [12:16] – The Justin Gustin problem and Larry's own Hagman mixup [13:29] – Full introduction: 2 million followers, two podcasts, and the book [16:54] – Growing up the baby of the family with siblings seven and eight years older [20:18] – A Vietnam veteran father, a World War Two grandfather, and night terrors that never left [21:55] – Watching your dad go from Superman to human during the divorce [26:38] – Running from it: partying, drugs, theft, and total chaos at 14 [28:26] – Losing friends to overdoses and deciding to get out [29:48] – Moving to Tennessee, meeting Jessica, and marrying 11 months later [34:08] – The Gottman research and why only 12% of marriages truly thrive [36:27] – Marry the right person for the right reasons, because marriage fixes nothing [37:59] – Postpartum, the roommate phase, and the darkest stretch of their marriage [40:56] – Killing the ego and why keeping score breeds resentment [43:48] – Getting sober three and a half years ago and what changed [46:42] – Ego death without becoming a doormat or a nice guy [48:55] – Eliminate the guessing and learn what your wife actually needs [52:42] – Inside the book: the weight fathers carry and the mantra to keep showing up [54:47] – Wearing exhaustion as a badge of honor versus being the healed version of you [57:18] – Legacy, being a home worth coming back to, and the 3am call 5 Key Takeaways Tired Means You're Doing It Right — If parenting feels hard and exhausting, that's evidence you care enough to invest in it. You're tired from the work, not of it. Marriage Fixes Nothing — Your partner isn't responsible for healing your wounds and you aren't responsible for healing theirs. Two people can both do their own work and build something great, but expecting rescue guarantees misery. The Ego Is a Heavy Backpack — Keeping score is the breeding ground for resentment. Dropping the ego means asking how you can help the situation, not tallying what you're not getting. Ego Death Is Not Becoming a Doormat — Killing the ego doesn't mean happy wife, happy life, or becoming a yes man. It means eliminating the guessing, expressing your own needs clearly, and understanding hers. Be the Healed Version, Not the Broken One — Carrying exhaustion proudly while running on empty leaves you injured at the end of the road. The goal is showing up tired but well, in shape for the job. Tired of ADHD strategies that don't work? Start here: Stop Trying to “Fix” Your ADHD. You're Not Broken: https://programs.tracyotsuka.com/sign-up_____Some brains cannot sit still long enough to be careful. Ella Fielding found a machine that runs on exactly that.Ella has a BA in Fine Art Sculpture, a Masters in Fine Art, and a chainsaw operator's license, and she uses all three to turn whole trees into monumental sculpture. But she left school at 14 because it was too traumatic to stay. She was quick with her hands and slow to get anything out of her head onto paper, and for most of her life nobody named why. She was 38, running her own art business and drowning in the admin, when a work coach kept mentioning ADHD and she kept insisting she was just dyslexic. Turns out it was both. Now she carves outside in full gear, running a machine most people won't touch and making it behave like a scalpel. Not despite the ADHD. Because of it. A chainsaw does not let you drift or second-guess or wait for the perfect plan. It demands you be right here, right now, which is the one place her brain has always worked best.In this episode, Tracy and Ella get into the school years that nearly broke her, the "poof" moment where a thought vanishes the second she reaches for a pen, why immediate and physical beats slow and planned for a brain like hers, and how she reads her own overwhelm as a signal instead of a character flaw.If you have ever been told you were too much, this one might reframe the whole thing.Resources:Website: https://ellafielding.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ella.fielding.sculptorFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ellafieldingsculptorLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ella-fielding-sculptorSend a Message: Your Name | Email | Message Explore more from me:
