In the final episode of the season, Annie deals with the repercussions of her job knowing the truth about her and Ryan at work. She has lunch with Sheila who implies that she wants Annie to spy on her and potentially kick out Gabe. In the end, Gabe interrupts their lunch date, and Annie's mother calls her about an emergency with her father. At the hospital, Annie and her mother open up and really bond, healing over their past communication issues. At Fran's party, Fran and Emily hook up while Annie finally realizes Ryan isn't the right guy for her. In Season 2 Episode 7 of Shrill, Annie came to terms with who she is as a person. Gabe invited her to an intellectual salon where she met Sheila, a person who believes in Annie and loves her writing! Ryan accompanied Annie to the party, but he wasn't having any of it. Instead, Ryan insisted they needed to leave quickly to get to "more important" matters: Burger League. This came to a head when Ryan made the executive decision and called a Lyft, pushing Annie to leave the party before she was ready. In a somewhat genuine attempt to empower women, the founder of WAHAM (Women Are Having A Moment) Justine and her followers end up making the average woman feel like she needs to be “fixed.” The conference featured bad testimonies about not having a career and being happy about doing nothing, as well as selling overpriced cosmetic enhancement products for a more affluent, higher wage-earning crowd. Annie didn’t think Chub-Rub, cellulite makeup for legs and hundred dollar sex toys were a way for women to take their power back. It was obvious that the WAHAM Conference was simply a way to monetize on women’s insecurities and the “idea” of being empowered. Episodes 3 "Skate" and Episode 4 "Freak" from Season 2 Annie has been liberated from her stifling job for a month now but realizes she prefers being constrained over being broke and hungry! She tries to save face as her former co-worker friends ask how things are going after she made such a dramatic exit. She tells them she landed a job at the Tribune but the truth is... the interview at the Tribune crashed and burned. She gets invited to rude Ruthie's Skating Birthday Party and uses this meetup with the old crew as an opportunity to ask for her old job back. Annie takes advantage of the bottomless cocktails and Gabe takes advantage of the bottomless cocaine-like ketamine. The ketamine eventually leaves Gabe unconscious, but not before he agrees to take Annie back at The Weekly Thorn. These nemesis call a truce as she escorts him to an Uber to see that he makes it home alive. Rachel feels whole again and Ryan is still unemployed. In Episode 1, Annie is running from her troll, Kevin, after destroying his property by throwing a brick through the window of his car. Her and Ryan find refuge at a campsite where they 'go down' on one another after 2 and 4 day old unwashed genitalia, and are interrupted by a Boy Scout group! She then discovers that her mom has skipped town to have some "me" time in Vancouver. This confuses Annie because what is her mom trying to escape from? Annie's dad is alone and panics because he cannot locate camping Annie and was only left a note by his wife that she is vacationing in Vancouver. Is this a mid-life crisis for Annie's mom? We seem to think so when she purchases a red Kentucky Derby hat that is out of her style range. In Episode 2, Annie discovers details about her internet troll, including his name and his place of work. She scams her way in and confronts her troll, "Kevin" unexpectedly outside of his glass conference room and blackmails him for an interview to write about for her new freelance writing career. Annie really is trying to find her footing after quitting her job at The Weekly Thorn. She realizes freelancing isn't as lucrative or as easy to live from as she steals food and toiletries from her parent's home while visiting. Poor Annie can't catch a break!
